Finding Hope
Please note that I don't mean to offend anyone with this fic or anything, its not what I mean.
"Harry Potter!" Mrs. Smith, Harry's reception teacher called out from her desk.
Mrs. Smith watched with a small smile as the boy in question nervously made his way to her, he made sure to go around the other children, especially his elder and larger cousin Dudley Dursley.
"Yes Mrs. Smith?" Harry asked nervously once he stood in front of his teacher's desk, he looked up at her nervously wondering what he had done wrong now.
"Remember a couple of days ago we had a visitor in the classroom?" Mrs. Smith asked as she pulled out a mini version of her chair for Harry to sit on.
"Yes," Harry said slowly as he looked at the chair as if it'd eat him alive.
With a small sigh Mrs. Smith took out of her desk her secret weapon when dealing with Harry, a stuff toy emerald green snake and placed it on the chair. Mrs. Smith then slowly lured Harry to sitting on the chair with the toy and once he was on the chair she allowed Harry to take the toy from her and start cuddling with it.
"Well they're back today and they want to talk to you," Mrs. Smith said with a smile as she watched Harry hug the stuff toy closely.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to," Harry said suddenly surprising Mrs. Smith, "It was the words, they move on the paper, my relatives don't like it that I have magic paper either, they don't like the fact that I…"
Mrs. Smith gave a mental angry sigh, unlike the other teachers in the school she knew the Dursley's outside of the school, she had seen them at the park when she took her own children, she had seen their behavior towards little Harry. Because of this she had told these 'nice people' about it and actions had been taken without either the Dursley's or Harry knowing and today was the day that Mrs. Smith, the school and others involved would make their move.
"Don't worry Harry, you're not in trouble," Mrs. Smith said, leaving out that it was the Dursley's in trouble, "It's just that we've found out a couple of more things about…what makes you special and well we've got some nice people to help you out."
Harry's eyes went wide with hope, "I'll be normal? Like everyone else? I won't be a freak?"
Mrs. Smith's eyes narrowed, this was another point against the Dursley's, "You are already normal Harry, through what's about to happen will be for the best, I promise you that you'll be happy and safe."
"Alright," Harry said nervously, hiding the toy suddenly as his cousin looked over to Harry and Harry made it so he'd look as if he was getting another telling off which made Dudley grin.
What the two cousin's didn't notice was that Mrs. Smith had been watching all of this silently, it was then decided in her mind what she would do.
"Dudley," Mrs. Smith called out as she stood up and placed a hand on Harry's shoulder protectively, "Please come here please."
With a frown Dudley made his way over to the teacher's desk, pushing the other children out of the way as he went and also taking a few toys from the other children.
"Dudley Dursley," Mrs. Smith began to scold the obese child only for her to remember what was coming their way, "Harry Potter, please follow me, Miss. Jones, the teaching assistant will be in charge of the class while we are gone."
With that Harry and Mrs. Smith walked around the desk, Harry paused as he placed the toy snake back on the desk only for a hand to lightly rest over his, looking up he found out that it was Mrs. Smith.
"It's alright, take it with you, it's yours," Mrs. Smith said as she lightly pushed the toy into Harry's chest who hugged it, Mrs. Smith felt that the small boy could use all the comfort that he could get with what was about to happen.
"What about me!" Dudley demanded as he watched the entire thing, "I want toy too!"
Mrs. Smith gave a small non-understandable mutter under her breath and gave Dudley one of his own toys that he had left at the school the other day.
With Dudley's victory cry of his 'new' toy they walked out of the class room, with a nod of Mrs. Smith's head to Miss. Jones' who sent her a good luck nod, they walked out of the class room and for a few seconds until they reached where Harry's and Dudley's peg's was.
"Go and get your stuff boys," Mrs. Smith said as the two boys did as told, "You most likely won't be returning to class again for a few days at least."
Dudley gave a loud cry of happiness as he ran ahead and put his coat on and ran about gathering his stuff and putting it in his bag.
While this was going on Mrs. Smith helped Harry get ready, through she also sneaked in a few extra's that her and the staff had put some money in and gotten the small boy, through this was done without the Dursley's or Harry's knowledge.
"Have you got everything?" Mrs. Smith asked as she gave a checking look at the two boys in front of her, they didn't look like cousins they looked like complete opposites.
Looking over the two boys Mrs. Smith found that Dudley was loaded up with his toys and food while Harry only had his new stuff toy snake and the few bits and bobs that she had managed to sneak in before.
"Let's get going then," Mrs. Smith said as she lead them towards the Headmaster's office, while making sure to keep one boy on each side of her so there wasn't any fights or problems.
On their way up there, there was a lot of people walking by and sending them odd looks, Dudley took full advantage of this while Harry shyly pressed himself closer to Mrs. Smith who was one of the few people who had ever been nice to him and didn't listen to what his aunt and uncle said about him.
Once they was at the Headmaster's office door Mrs. Smith gave the two 4 year olds another check before she knocked on the door.
"Come in," the Headmaster's voice came through the door.
Mrs. Smith opened the door only to find that not only the Headmaster was in his office but also a few other people, some wearing suits and fancy clothes while others wearing jeans and a casual top, with also the elder Dursley's in the room.
"Mummy! Daddy!" Dudley cried out happily as he ran over to his parents only to be stopped by a big strong looking man in jeans and a t-shirt.
"Sorry kid," the man said as with the way you'd lift weights he picked Dudley Dursley up off of the ground only to make sure to hold the child at arm's length as he began to kick, wave his arms around and scream, especially when Dudley's legs began to get to close to a certain place for comfort.
"I want mummy! I want daddy!" Dudley cried out with fake tears in his tantrum trying to get his way.
Through it didn't help any, it just made things worse.
"You see my point," a woman with long blond hair in a business skit outfit said to a man in a business suit, "It's just like we observed during our last visit, and it must be done, now."
The man nodded, "Very well, Mr. and Mrs. Dursley you are under address for abusing two children, money manipulation, stealing from Gurrnings, and I'm afraid that the list is too long to read as we'd be here all year."
Everyone sent the adult Dursley's in the room that seemed to promise death.
"What about my baby boy!" Petunia cried out as the handcuffs were placed on her, "My precious Duddy-kins! What will happen to him! No one else would-"
"Spoil him rotten or treat the poor child in such a way that it's messed up his head," Mrs. Smith said with a glare as she picked up a shaking Harry and comforted him, "And what about Harry here? Aren't you supposed to care about both boys' equally?"
"That little freak isn't worth anything," Vernon boomed out angry as he tried and failed to get out of the handcuffs, "From the moment he appeared on our doorstep we knew he was a freak and know with his special needs his even more of a freak!"
With that Vernon suddenly lunged forward, and before anyone managed to get in the way or do anything to stop him Vernon had managed to hit Harry so hard that Mrs. Smith went crashing into the nearby wall at a funny angel and at the same time causing Harry to slam his head against the wall.
The following things happened in a flash, the elder Dursley's was taken out of the room roughly and straight to the prison, Dudley Dursley's temper tantrum was ignored and he was taken outside and placed in a social services car that would take him to a 'rehabilitation centre for boys' like Dudley.
Once the Dursley's had been taken out of the room everyone made a circle around Mrs. Smith and Harry.
"Are you alright?" the woman from before in a business suit skit, her name Ms. Evan, asked as Headmaster Thomas and her partner, Mr. Skittles, helped Mrs. Smith and Harry up off the ground.
"I'm fine but I'm not sure about Harry," Mrs. Smith said worriedly as she looked down at the unmoving boy in her arms.
"Let me," a man said in a light blue t-shirt and jeans, "I'm the doctor at the place Harry's going to."
The man took Harry gently out of Mrs. Smith's arms and laid him down on the sofa, letting Harry keep his hold on the toy snake.
"It looks like he'll be fine," the man said as he took his brown jacket of the back of the sofa and placed it carefully over Harry, "It just looks like a bit of a bump, he'll be fine, just let him sleep and when he wakes up give him something to eat and drink along with maybe some painkillers. That should sort everything out though he maybe a little bit dizzy when he first opens his eyes."
The others gave a nod.
"And what is your name and which company do you work for?" Mrs. Smith asked carefully, not wanting anything to happen to Harry.
The man gave a sheepish smile, "The name's Steve, I'm from a children's home that's for children with special needs like Harry's, not enough to need a special type of family with certain things happening and everything but still needs a bit of something extra that the other place's he'd go to couldn't give him."
Mrs. Smith and Headmaster Thomas shared a look before Mrs. Smith asked, "I didn't know that there was a special home for children with Dyslexia, Irlen Syndrome, and partly deaf?"
Steve paused, how was he going to explain that this children home was not only for those things but for children with magic? Those children with 'special needs' in the muggle word turned out to be some of the greatest people in the magical world? He couldn't break the secrecy act to muggles.
Just as Steve was beginning to panic slightly under the looks the sound of the door opening and closing was heard as his partner walked back in.
"That damn Dursley kid is evil," Steve's partner, John, muttered as he entered the room, "Maybe if I give him to Flich and let him hang the brat up by the thumbs it'll give the brat a shock to make him behave."
"You torture children?" Mrs. Smith said as she inched closer to the sofa that had Harry on it.
"I think that there's been a mix up," the woman in a business suit skirt said calmly with a look at her partner, "John here is just letting out a bit of steam and means nothing by it, right John?"
"Oh right," John said sheepishly, "I've been given a police check and everything so I'm all clear so no worries madam."
Mrs. Smith gave a pointed look, "So what will happen to Harry now?"
"He'll be going to Hope's children home," the man in a business suit said stepping forward, "These two fine men are workers from there and will be working closely with Harry. We thought it'd be best to get them to know Harry sooner than later."
Headmaster Thomas nodded, "I agree, so Mr. Potter will be safe and happy at Hope? We're not giving him away to someone who kills children for a leaving or has them as sex slaves?"
The room broke out in laughter as Steve and John took out of their pockets some identification and shown it to both the teacher and Headmaster.
"Ah, you're from that Hope's children home," Headmaster Thomas said with a nod of his head, "I've had some of your children come here for a day to get a new experience and for us to learn."
Headmaster Thomas got a warm smile from the two men.
"So it's alright if we get going then?" Steve said as he sent a look at Harry, "I'd like to get to Hope soon and finish all the paper work before midnight and get Harry settled in as soon as possible."
"Alright," Mrs. Smith said as she finished looking over their identification, "Harry's hardly got anything of his own and as a few of the teachers and staff knew what was going on today we chipped in together and got him a few things, it's all in the bag."
Mrs. Smith then handed over the old worn backpack to John as Steve went to check on the now waking Harry.
Harry let out a groan and opened his eyes to find himself face to face with a man that had a kind look in his blue eyes, his hair was blond with a few streaks of brown in it and he had a built like Uncle Vernon yet more fitter.
"Hi ya, I'm Steve, your names Harry right?" the man, now known as Steve, asked in a way that Harry could hear.
Harry gave the man called Steve a surprised look, only a few teachers (including Mrs. Smith) ever spoke to him in a tone he could hear what they was saying properly the first time.
Steve gave a kind smile, "Well your aunt and uncle aren't able to look after you anymore so you'll be coming along with me and my friend John here to a new place to live, maybe one that will get you a new mummy and daddy. Would that be alright with you?"
Harry slowly turned and looked at Mrs. Smith, confused to what these people meant.
Seeing Harry's look Mrs. Smith stepped forward.
"Harry, remember what we talked about? About your aunt and uncle not being very nice people and your cousin?" Mrs. Smith asked with seriously, she continued once Harry gave a nod, "We'll what we've talked about is what's happening."
Harry gave a shaky nod as he clung to his stuff toy snake, "I'm not coming back?"
Mrs. Smith felt her heart melt at that, no child should want to be in school over staying at home, in Mrs. Smith's opinion it was just one of those things that wasn't right.
"We'll see," Mrs. Smith said giving the two men a pointed look, "maybe we'll see each other again, maybe we won't but we'll just have to see who your new parents are and what they think."
Harry gave a shaky nod as he found himself being lifted up by strong arms.
"Let's get going squirt," John said as Harry found out it was Steve who was carrying him, "Before we came here we picked up the Dursley's from their house and as they won't be needing it we have the key so we'll be going back to number 4 Pirate drive to get your stuff alright?"
Harry looked down at his snake, he didn't have a lot, only what he had hidden in his cupboard but he didn't want to leave his blanket and stuff toys that were made by his mum or the things that Mrs. Smith had smuggled him.
"Alright," Harry said getting a smile from Steve and John.
"We'll keep you up to date," the woman in the business suit skirt said as she handed Mrs. Smith and Headmaster Thomas a business card each, "This card has the address, phone number and email address of the place that Mr. Potter is going to be staying at until his adopted or becomes of age or finds someone, if he does get adopted then it's up to his new parents about the continuing contact but either way its Harry's choice to reply or not but we'll keep you up to date and everything."
With that Harry, Steve, John and the two people in businesses suits exited the Headmaster's office, Harry making sure to give Mrs. Smith a wave as he looked over Steve's back.
A watery eyed Mrs. Smith returned the wave with a whisper of good luck.
Harry Potter was finally going to get the love and hopefully family that he disserved.
Harry stayed quiet as he was carried through the school and to the main gates, he tried to hide himself within Steve's hold but it didn't stop the looks that he was getting from piercing into him like sticks and stones.
Suddenly Harry found himself not moving anymore and looked up only to come face to face with a really old man with a long white beard and what seemed to have robes on from the Waltz Disney cartoon movies that Dudley had watched and he got to see a few seconds of while cleaning only this man's robes was green with bright yellow lemon's and lemon drops on them.
Harry gulped as the old man gave him a look that he had gotten a lot from his uncle, he also felt the grip Steve had on him tighten while John seemed to stand closely by protectively while the people in business suits watched on in a look on their faces that Harry couldn't understand.
"He won't do at all," the old man said as he looked at Harry, "Who would want a disabled hero? Stupid little brat getting himself these disgusting little muggle problems, he will not be going to Hogwarts when of age so he can have that filthy money back, I don't want him coming near me or my school or the English wizarding community. Good day, I have the real boy-who-lived to check up on."
With that the man gave Harry one last look as if he was going to get Dyslexia, Arleen Syndrome and partly deaf from just being in the same area as Harry before turning on his heal and walked away while muttering something about 'Longbottom' and 'should of known'.
Once the man was gone Harry felt the tension disappear and the four adults give him looks of relief.
"Harry," Steve said as he moved Harry so that they could comfily look at each other eye to eye, "I never want you to think that whatever that old man and the English wizards and witches say about you affect you at all. People in this country are just idiots that can't see past how 'pure their blood' is so don't worry alright?"
Harry gave them an owlish look as he clung to his snake and spoke for the first time, "There's no such thing as magic."
That simple statement got different reactions through everyone were feeling shock, anger and surprise. Once they had all managed to gather themselves they chose to do some explaining before they went any father.
"Let's get in the car Harry then I've got some surprising things to tell you," Steve said as they made their way out of the school gates and to the car park down the road that the car was waiting at.
"Finally," John muttered as he took out the car keys and unlocked the car, "I think it might be a bit too big for the kid."
Steve shook his head, "It'll have to do, it's too dangerous for him to sit on my lap so we'll just use you know what."
"Alright," John said with a nod as he got into the back of the car and began to play around with something.
"Thanks for your help, we'll make sure to get in touch with you and keep you up to date with what's happening to Harry and everything," Steve said as he continued to keep a hold of Harry, only Harry wasn't paying any attention as Steve gave his farewells to what had become the two social workers.
Harry watched with wide eyes as John seemed to mess around with something in the back of the car, the seat behind the driver side was the area he was playing in, for a few seconds before a flash of light appeared for a second and disappeared within that same second.
"Got it," John cried out in victory as he crawled out of the car.
Turning around to face his friend now that the 'social workers' was gone, Steve found a very amusing sight. Somehow John had managed to strap himself into the child seat that they had brought for Harry.
Harry let out a giggle as Steve let out a laugh and John blushed madly.
"Safe?" John asked still bright red.
"Safe," Steve said as he slowly pulled himself together.
Harry watched with wide eyes as John took out a long polished look stick and gave it a wave with a few choice words, suddenly sparks came flying out of the tip and the child car seat chair was off of John and in its place in the car.
"Let's see," John muttered as he checked over the car seat to make sure it was safe for Harry to sit in.
Meanwhile Steve began to whistle 'We are going to war' song while tapping out the song on Harry's small shoed foot so Harry could understand as well. Through soon enough Harry began to try and whistle the song as well, even if he was failing badly.
"Oh shut up you two," John said hot headily as he quickly got out of the car with raised arms in Harry's direction.
"John!" Steve said sharply as he held the shocked child close, "What were you thinking?"
"Errr...I wasn't?" John said simply causing Steve to sigh.
Steve just gave John a look before trying to calm down Harry. After awhile they managed to calm Harry down, with the help of John acting like an idiot and pulling faces, enough to get Harry ready for the car trip.
"Alright," Steve said as walked around the car to the side that the child seat was, "Let's get you in your seat and all strapped down so we can go and get your belongings from Pirate drive and then get going to Hope."
Steve carefully placed Harry in the child seat and did up the buckles only to find a slight problem...Harry refused to let go of the one man who had given him his first hug he remembered, his first time being carried since before Petunia got her way and refused to even hold his hand, the first person to protect him and tell people off for scaring him without tell him to stop being silly.
"Come on Harry, I need you to let go of me so we can get going," Steve said gently, understanding what Harry was thinking thanks to working with abused and negated children through Steve had a feeling that with Harry and his special situation that things would be a whole lot more difficult yet easier.
John gave a sigh as he moved forward and took the car keys out of Steve's back pocket, "I'll drive and you sit in the back with him. It'll be easier as we do need to explain about you know what and he has seen it with our little war against the child seat."
"Fine, Harry let go of me so I can go around the other side of the car and get in, I'll be sitting in the back with you," Steve said gently through he had a hint of authority in his voice.
Hearing the tone that Steve used with him plus the way that Uncle Vernon used to talk to him Harry quickly let go but kept his eyes on Steve.
Steve ruffled Harry's hair before standing up and walking around the car, through he paused halfway.
"You be careful you hear me? Remember what happened last time with the night bus?...you do know where we are going this time right?" Steve asked as he then made his way around the car to the door that he needed.
"I know, I know all that so don't worry, I'll be extra careful," John said as he rolled his eyes and opened the driver's door and got in, "Besides we have a little one with us this time!"
With a few choice words sent John's way, Steve got into the car and buckled up.
"Right," Steve said as the car started and pulled out of the car park, "Harry there are a few things you need to know but first…how much do you know?"
Harry looked at Steve then to John then back to Steve and gave Steve a 'am I really safe in here or are you two idiots?' look which caused Steve to burst out laughing as the look Harry gave him reminded him so much of his cousin.
"I'm in reception and I know the things a child my age should from school…haven't you seen my grades?" Harry said slowly, not mentioning the fact that he was smarter then he let on and only kept his grades down because of what would happen if he did better than his cousin.
Once Steve and John pulled themselves together Steve continued.
"No Harry, I mean about magic, the wizarding world, about you not being human like all the Potter's before you, about Voldermort," Steve said as he watched Harry closely.
Harry looked out the car, he knew he was a freak with everything he had done but this man was saying he wasn't even human and magic existed, it was then that he decided to break all of the rules that the Dursley's set for him and use one of the rules that the school had taught him, if worried about strange people saying strange things then tell someone.
"Are you ill?" Harry asked causing Steve to blink in shock, Harry then looked to John, "Are you taking him back to his child minder before we go to where we're going?"
Steve let out a groan as John muttered something about kids saying classic stuff no matter what.
Steve let out a sigh before looking at Harry, "Harry, a lot of things I can't tell you at the moment because you'd not understand them but (Steve spotted the look Harry was giving him) I promise you'll be told when you're ready but for now you'll be told things as you need to know and when you're ready for it."
Harry nodded as he hugged his stuff toy snake close, he knew better then to talk back or say anything to object adults, and Uncle Vernon had taught him good.
"First thing first…Harry you're a wizard and you're not human at that," Steve said plainly with Harry looking at him with wide eyes, "Your…learning disabilities and hearing problem is due to your creature side…you see Harry you're a mix between a Lantern Ghost, a wizard, and a Guardian."
Harry blinked and gave Steve a 'what the hell' look which when John got a look of it in the mirror caused the man to burst out laughing.
"Once we get a bit of confidence in you kid you'll be great," John said with a smile as they turned into Pirate drive and parked in number 4's drive way, "We're here."
As John got out of the car Steve turned to Harry, "Will you let me help you out of there?"
Harry shot a quick glance to number 4 and then back to Steve before slowly nodding his head.
"Don't worry kid," Steve said with a smile, "Let's get your things from that hell hold and we'll be on our way to your new home until you get a mum and dad."
With a nod Harry allowed Steve to take him out of the child car seat and into the house.
"Right Harry, go and get whatever's yours," Steve said as he placed Harry down on the ground.
Getting an encouraging look from Steve, Harry slowly walked to his cupboard under the stairs, it was still open from the morning and not locked, he took out a few bits of coloring and other stuff he had done in school, a stuff toy stag, a baby blanket that had seen better days and the stuff to help him out with his 'disabilities' that the school had given him which he had left at home as Mrs. Smith had said he wouldn't be needing them that day.
With that Harry turned and walked back to Steve and John who was watching him with frowns on their faces.
"Harry…" John said as he waved his wand and a bag came flying to him, "I'm going to have to do a few things before we leave…something isn't right here…but while you wait I'm sure that Steve will be more than happy to tell you all about being a Lantern Ghost and Guardian."
With that John took his bag and went down the stairs into the basement while Steve and Harry sat on the sofa waiting for him to come back up.
"Right, you want to know about Lantern Ghost's and Guardian's huh?" Steve said out loud to the nervous child, "We'll let me think…Lantern Ghost's are not really a true Ghost but a type that you see when people are murdered. What happens is that when a person's body has been found and a Lantern Ghost around, which there normally is, the Lantern Ghost will show themselves in what looks like a harmless form to someone and only show themselves to one person if they're a crowd or the person that found the body. The Lantern Ghost will give the chosen person a scary smile and a lantern will appear in the Ghost's hand, the Lantern Ghost will click their fingers and a small light will surround the dead person for a few seconds and then a small ball of light, color depending on the person, will appear and enter the lantern where it's said to stay, which it does, until it reaches the spirit world to receive judgment, when the chosen person see's the Lantern Ghost totally disappear into the darkness and only able to see the person's spirit within the lantern then they know they are half way to the spirit world and once the spirit's light in the lantern is gone out then the chosen person watching knows the spirit has crossover over into the spirit world…"
Here Steve gathered Harry in his arms and comforted Harry who had gone pale at what seemed like a ghost story fit for an adult to him.
"Don't worry Harry! Lantern Ghost's are good guys!" Steve said as he tried to lighten the mood, "They guide people across into the spirit world and they let someone see them so they know that they're loved ones have made it safely over into the spirit world!"
Judging by the look on Harry's face Harry didn't know what to make of this.
"You'll understand all the ins and out when you're a bit older but for now onto Guardian side!" Steve said with a smile, "A Guardian is sort of how it sounds, you see-"
Suddenly a wave of invisible energy washed through the house and over Harry and Steve making them both sit up straight and wonder about John.
"Right, about Guardian's," Steve said as he pulled Harry into a protective hold with a quick glance at the basement door, "Guardian's are similar to Lantern Ghosts in a way but there a bit more human. They…guard…everyone, they protect, help, kill, love, destroy, create and so on but they are most likely to be found making sure everything is balanced within the world. Now then, your 'special needs' come into play with your creature side because-"
Suddenly before Steve could continue with his explanations John came running up the stairs out of the basement, as white as a sheet, panting hard.
"We need to get out of here NOW!" John yelled as he waved his wand and placed a few stones with markings on them at the bottom of the door, "This house was built on a plague pit it seems and the spirits aren't happy…"
A sudden scream was heard from the basement causing Harry to whimper.
"Shit, we need to get out of here now," Steve swore as he gathered Harry and his meager belongings while John came over and made it so they were all touching.
"Ready," John called as he did his best to ignore the howling, banging and none pleasant noises coming from the basement.
"Ready," Steve called out and with that the Portkey was activated just in time as they left the house as the things in the basement got free and the house exploded.
"Shit," Steve said as they landed roughly on a grassy hill, "That was a close call."
Harry, not letting go of Steve, looked around to see if the scary things had gone and if they was safe now only to find that only to find that they was no longer in number 4 nor was they in England anymore.
If the pink trees and funny writing that Harry had seen in his books from school was anything to go by…they was now standing in the country side of Japan.
"Let's make our way to the school," Steve said as they began on what would be the biggest adventure ever for Harry, he would be going on the adventure known as life and if what he had been through so far was anything to go by then Harry had a feeling that his wasn't going to be as simple as he used to think it was.
The End.
