Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter, and I do not have any rights to Harry Potter. I am not making any money from writing these fics. This fic was done as a challenge for “haunted.” And lastly, if the first chapter seems similar to HP book/movie 2, it’s because this story was based on that.
Chapter 1
“This is bad, so bad. I’ll get expelled for sure and dad will…” Hermione said before letting out a loud groan. “I’m dead!” She yelled as she hit her head on the door to the stall. Hermione let out an angry scream as she punched the wall. She couldn’t believe what a stupid mistake she had made! Tears started to pool in her eyes as she thought over what had happened. She had brewed the Polyjuice potion perfectly for Harry and Ron, only to mess up her own portion! Hermione realized that she was only twelve years old, but someone as smart as her should have known what she was doing. She should have made sure that she had gotten the right hair!
“No, that’s what I am. I’m pretty sure you’re still alive,” Myrtle said as she floated lazily around the bathroom.
“You don’t understand, I messed up the potion and now I…I’m a…” Hermione choked on her words and tried desperately not to cry.
“A cat?” Myrtle asked as she floated above Hermione.
“What am I going to do?” Hermione sniffled and looked to Myrtle.
“I don’t know, I’m a ghost so if I’m scared of something I just disappear,” Myrtle said before floating away.
“If only I could,” Hermione mumbled to herself.
Hermione stared at the spot Myrtle had been moments before, thoughts and ideas run through her mind as she tried to pull herself together. Maybe it was only temporary, maybe she was freaking out over nothing, maybe it wasn’t anything to get upset and worked up over. Taking a deep breath Hermione closed her eyes and pulled herself together and waited the return of her two best friends. She knew that they would return when the potion was truly gone out of their systems, and that meant her potion would have worn off two and she’d be back to normal.
“When I open my eyes, I’ll have Harry and Ron happy to greet me with the news of who the heir of Slytherin is, and I’ll be human again,” Hermione said calmly and logically as hope slowly built up inside of her. “When I open my eyes, I’ll be human,” She said to herself as she leaned against the wall of the small bathroom stall. Hermione then sat in silence until Harry and Ron came back. She didn’t need to wait long as the sounds of footsteps came to her ears.
“Hermione! Hermione!” Ron called out excitedly as they rushed into the bathroom, “Malfoy isn’t the heir! Can you believe it?”
“Y-yeah, that’s great, Ron,” Hermione said in a shaky voice.
“Mione?” Harry called to her.
“I…I’m in here…” Hermione called back, her anxiety rising quickly.
“What’s wrong?” Harry asked. Hermione could hear his footsteps against the bathroom floor with Ron close behind him. The footsteps stopped right outside of the stall and Hermione felt like she was having a panic attack.
“I…messed up the potion,” Hermione said. She could barely breathe.
“What do you mean?” Ron asked.
“The hair…it was…” Hermione tried to explain but the terror was overwhelming her. She heard the door open and both of the boys gasp, but she couldn’t get herself to look. She could feel their eyes roaming over her new cat ears, claws, and tail. She was…for lack of a better word, a cat girl. She wasn’t completely furry, and her ears and tail were the same color as her hair. They watched her tail twitch rapidly and her ears lay flat, just like an irritated cat. And she was, considering her two best friends were staring at her like she was a freak.
“M-Mione?” Harry finally asked.
“It was a cat’s,” Mione whispered before finally breaking down into sobs.
“Can you reverse it?” Ron asked.
“I don’t…know how,” Hermione said between sobs.
“Then how about we visit Madam Pomfrey? Maybe she can do something about this,” Harry suggested as he wiped away Hermione’s tears.
“That’s a great idea!” Ron cried out happily, “Back when Fred and Gorge were in their first year, they got turned into a pair of identical foxes, but Madam Pomfrey was able to turn them back into humans! So maybe Madam Pomfrey can turn you back into a human too!”
“A-alright, it’s worth a chance. A-and if she can’t, then she’ll send for someone who can,” Hermione said with a weak smile.
“That’s the spirit!” Harry said with a big encouraging grin. “Let’s go to the infirmary,” Harry said as he held out his hand to Hermione.
Hermione gave him a small smile and took his hand. But although she agreed with Ron and Harry, there was something inside her telling her otherwise. She decided to ignore it because she trusted Ron and Harry. In no time she’d be back to normal and they’d figure out the mystery that was waiting for them this year. The three second year Gryffindor students made their way to the infirmary in an eerie silence. Although Hermione trusted her friends, she still had that gnawing feeling that nothing would be the same.
The trio quietly walked into the infirmary. Almost instantly Madam Pomfrey rushed over to them. She had Hermione sit on a bed and shooed the boys past a curtain so she could examine Hermione without them getting in her way. The boys watched the curtain and waited. At one point, Dumbledore joined Madam Pomfrey. Dumbledore put up a silencing spell of some kind so the boys couldn’t hear them talking. After what seemed like hours, Dumbledore finally pulled back the curtain.
“Is she ok?” Harry asked.
“I’m afraid we cannot reverse the potion,” Dumbledore said with a heavy sigh.
“So she’s…stuck like this?” Ron asked as he stared at the Headmaster with wide eyes. Dumbledore responded with a nod. Suddenly a loud purring sound came from behind Dumbledore caused the three to turn their attention to the two females behind them. Madam Pomfrey was scratching behind one of Hermione’s cat ears, which was making Hermione purr!
“She…She’s purring, she…really is a cat!” Ron yelled in disbelief.
“Ron, don’t freak out, it’s still Mione,” Harry said with a glare directed at the redhead.
“No, it’s not. She’s not Mione, she’s a cat girl, a monster,” Ron said with a hiss.
“She’s not a monster!” Harry yelled angrily.
Harry raised his arm ready to punch the idiot Weasley only to find Dumbledore stepping between them before the fight could begin. He put a hand on each of their heads and spoke calmly, “Boys, no fighting in Hogwarts. Besides, you’re both right in that she is still Miss Granger, but she’s not JUST Miss Granger either. In fact, though she’s not a monster, the ministry may not allow her to stay in school. I will talk to them tomorrow to try to sort it out, but in the mean you two go to bed.”
“But…what about Hermione?” Harry asked. He didn’t want to leave her alone when something like THIS had happened. This was worse than he ever could have imagined this school year going.
“She will stay here overnight where Madam Pomfrey can take care of her,” Dumbledore said before shooing the boys out of the infirmary.
“Headmaster, what are you going to do?” Pomfrey asked.
“What I must,” he said before he left too.
“Do you think I’m a monster?” Hermione asked quietly as Ron’s words echoed through her mind. One of her best friends, no he was more than that, he was her first crush. Her crush thought she was a monster…maybe she was.
“No, honey, you’re just…special,” Pomfrey said with a warm smile. “And don’t worry, I bet the Headmaster will get things sorted out and you can continue to be a student. Now off to sleep, you’ll have a big day tomorrow.”
“Thank you,” Hermione said. She fell asleep almost instantly, but she didn’t sleep peacefully. She had many nightmares, some worse than others, about what had happened to her, and worse what could happen to her now.
