The rain pelted the window as she sat on the window bench staring into the darkness. She hated days like these, it was always so dark a gloomy and her partner never did anything for her to comfort her. He was currently engrossed in a computer game on her laptop. He’d become addicted to the computer after she showed him how to use one, now she wasn’t allowed to go on it until he was in bed because he’d complain he wanted to play his game. It was HER freakin’ computer she got for HER birthday.
She huffed putting down her journal and got up from the window, crossing the living from floor to the door. “I’m going out” She said to no one in particular. She got no response, not even a grunt. Frustrated she shoved on her knee high boots, her button down pea coat and a purple scarf. She left the apartment with a loud slamming of the door. In the hall her neighbour poked her head out, “trouble with the hubby again my dear?” Ms. Jenkins asked. She was always nosing around, looking for dirt and gossip to tell her friends.
“No Ms. Jenkins, he’s still playing that stupid games of his.” She replied.
“Oh all right dear. Would you care for a cup of tea?” Ms. Jenkins ask brightly.
“Maybe another time. Friday maybe?”
“Oh that would be lovely! The ladies have been dying to meet you! Afternoon tea then, 2 pm. See you then deary.” With that Ms. Jenkins closed her door.
She sighed, and continued walking down the hall to the elevator. Ms. Jenkins was a kind elderly lady, her husband has passed away five years ago, but you could never tell that it had affected her now. Leaving the building she walked down the street, letting the rain completely drench her. It felt good on her face and wasn’t as cold as it looked. Entering a clothing store she shook herself off and looked around the quaint store. After school her style had gone from nosy bookworm know it all to setting fashion trends. Her body had finally grown the curves of a woman and her breasts were much larger.
Walking through the aisles sorting through the dresses she grabbed a couple and continued looking. “Can I help you find anything today miss?” The woman working asked.
Looking up, she thought for a moment, “Actually, yeah, I’m looking for a new dress and I can’t decide which one I like more. Also some new work clothes.”
“Well why don’t we start by trying on those dresses and then we can look at the blouses and pants.” The woman smiled, walking her to the dressing rooms. The woman took out a key and opened one of the rooms. “I will just be over there for when you come out.”
She thanked the woman and walked into the dressing room. Discarding her clothes and hanging them on a hook, she grabbed the first dress, a dark blue fitted sparkly gown that went to the floor. She twirled in the mirror and looked this way and that, then left the change room.
“Oh my, well that is a beautiful dress!” The woman smiled, “I’m Marie by the way, so if you have any questions please feel free to ask.”
Smiling she went back into the room and tried on a medium colored green dress that fell to the floor as well. She turned this way and that again before leaving the change room to ask Marie’s opinion.
“The blue one I think looks much prettier, it brought out your eyes more, where as the green sort of hides them. May I ask what the occasion is?” Marie said.
“A fundraiser ball for a local charity.” She replied.
Finally she tried on a striking red fitted dress. Strapless and fit snuggly mid thigh. She left the change room and twirled for Marie, who’s jaw dropped.
“I have never seen that dress look so amazing on anyone before, and believe me, that’s a high compliment. Out of only 5 dresses made I’ve sold three. It is a very unique dress.” Marie smiled brightly, clearly excited.
Running her hands down the dress she noticed that there were small pockets on either side with hidden zippers to put anything from your phone to your ID to money. She liked the zippers and the scrunched affect it had.
Marie had disappeared but came back shortly with a piece of matching red fabric, “This comes with it also,” She handed the fabric to her explaining, “They’re straps. This dress is very versatile. You can wear it whatever way you choose, both strap are adjustable. You could choose to have straps, a halter one shoulder and more fun things you can do with them. The adjustment pieces are hidden so you won’t even be able to tell that the straps are an extra piece!” Marie beamed with excitement.
“That’s amazing,” She said excitedly.
Marie continued to help her find some new clothes, finding that shopping therapy always helped calm her nerves. After she paid for her items, Marie suggested a couple shops for shoes and jewelry that she frequented and told her to drop her name and they would give her a discount. Taking her suggestion she visited a few more shops before finally sitting down at a coffee shop some three hours later. Ordering a Latte she choose a seat by the window and setting her bags down opened the mornings paper.
Within about five minutes a man brought her Latte, she smiled, thanking him and returned to her paper but her mind seemed to be elsewhere. She found herself staring out the window again when she noticed bright red hair walking down the street. The lanky form stopped just past the coffee shop she was in and watching curiously she noticed the man lean down and embrace someone. He pulled away looking around before kissing a woman furiously. It was disgusting, but she had lost her mind. There was her partner, her lover, her supposed to be best friend. Kissing. Someone. Else.
She wasn’t even sure she felt pain, just blackened red rage. And instead of getting up and confronting her partner, she decided to devise a plan. She would leave maybe, in the middle of the night, or the next time he worked ‘late’ one night. Either way she never wanted to see his ugly mug again.
Taking out her phone she dialed a number and waited for an answer.
“Hermione? Is everything all right?” A female’s voice answered with curiosity.
“No, I need a place to stay for a couple nights.” She sighed, watching her love walk off with the other woman.
“Of course, anything for you.” The woman on the other end of the line said.
“I’ll be there in about an hour.” Then she hit the end call button.
Figuring this was a safe time to leave, she gathered all of her bags and left the shop, her Latte only half drank and the newspaper a mess on the table. At their apartment she gathered some of her clothes, the essential items and her laptop and other electronics she could fit into her suitcases. As soon as she was done packing her things she wrote a note to her now ex boyfriend.
Ronald,
I was called away on assignment for a couple days. I was hoping to say goodbye to you before I left, but it’s urgent that I be there ASAP.
With Love,
--Hermione
Xoxo
With that she aparated out of her apartment. The front door opened with a bang and a voice called ‘Come in’ from within. Hermione shot a glance around her before entering the vast mansion. “I’m in the study my dear, I’m afraid I’m buried under a mountain of parchment work for the damned estate that I can’t find my way out!” The woman laughed.
She had only been here a handful of times but she always remembered where the study was. Entering the room on the left she understood what the woman meant by a mountain mixed of papers and parchment. The woman poked her head out from a pile to the right and smiled, climbing out from behind the teetering pile of parchment.
“Oh Hermione! You look ravishing as ever! Please tell me what the outside world is like. It feels like I haven’t been outside in ages!” The woman squealed.
Hermione smiled, the woman always had so much energy. “Thank you Narcissa, I really appreciate this.”
Narcissa scoffed, “Oh please, it’s the least I could do. I’m all alone in this stupid house anyways. Come, come, you must be tired I’ll show you to your room. With that she called to a house elf to take her things upstairs to a room. “I’m afraid I will have to leave you alone for a little bit, I still have some work to do, but please join me for dinner and we can discuss everything.”
“I would love that,” Hermione smiled and Narcissa as the door to her room was opened, Hermione’s jaw dropped. She knew the expanse and wealth of the Malfoy Manor but she never expected this.
“I had the elves throw a little something together. The green, silver and marble gets a bit dreary if you know what I mean.”
Hermione did. “Thank you again Narcissa. This is beautiful.”
With that Narcissa took her leave, humming some muggle tune and Hermione checked out her room. There was no green to be seen, but a bit of silver splashed in here and there. The room was massive, purple curtains with silver trimmings adorned the giant balcony with double French doors. A fireplace was off to the side with a black leather arm chair and matching love seat with an espresso brown coffee table in front, silver blankets hung perfectly folded and set in a diamond shape on the back of both pieces of furniture. A nice cream colored shag area rug covered the floor underneath the little living room set. And off to the right a massive bed with silver and purple bedding, a chesterfield sat at the end of the bed, oak nightstands on either side as well as two doors on either side of the bed. Even further to the right stood a beautiful vanity dresser complete with a swivel mirror.
Hermione could not believe her eyes, she checked out the door to the left of the bed and found a gigantic walk in closet that could fit her entire wardrobe three times over (and she had a lots of clothes), there was no need to cast an enlargement charm on this closet. She found that the second door led to her own private bathroom that had a sunken in tub with stairs and jets with different settings for speed and consistency. A stand up shower in the corner a large mirror covering one entire wall and of course a toilet.
She decided to take a bath, as she let the water run she decided to check in on her apartment, she’d left a charm in place before she left that allowed her to watch the occupants, she wanted to see Ronald’s reaction when the computer was no long there. To her dismay though he wasn’t home yet, turning ‘off’ her little mirror she sat down at the vanity and looked at her reflection. She looked tired and worn, all the fights and no communication that had been going on had taken their toll on her. She decided she needed to spoil herself further and have a spa day tomorrow, she would also convince Narcissa to take a break from the piles of work she had.
Hermione poured in some lavender bath bubbles and slowly stripped before walking into the tub. Sighing with enjoyment she sank down till her chin hit the water.
A knock came at the door some hour or so later and Hermione jumped, she must have fallen asleep. Rubbing her eyes she sat up as a house elf called out letting her know that dinner was almost ready.
Narcissa was already seated when Hermione made her way to the smaller of the two dining rooms with the help of one of the elves. “Ah Hermione, please sit sit,” Narcissa stood, with her arms extended in an invitation. They two woman sat at the table and Hermione realized that she was starving. They ate in a comfortable silence for a while, before Narcissa had to say something.
“So how is everything at home with Ronald?” She asked.
Of course that would be the first thing she asked, but she decided to put on a brave face and lie her ass off. “Oh things are good, we just got into a nasty argument and I just couldn't stand to be around him. I just need a little break.”
Nodding, Narcissa took another bite. “How long do you intend to stay? Draco will be visiting in a few days time. He’s overseas working on a deal for the company.”
“Only a couple days, I’d like to look for a house. After my mother passed… she left me quite a lot of money.” Hermione answered.
Narcissa smiled, “It’s nice to have dreams my dear.”
“Yes, it is. Say speaking of dreams, I think we should have a spa day tomorrow, I think the both of us could use a break!”
Beaming, Narcissa agreed. “It’s a date then.”
Soon after dinner, they retired to the reading room in front of large fireplace.
