Chapter 1
Watching Sirius get hit by the curse from Bella then fall back through that veil, Harry screamed his name then headed in that direction as fast as he could. He would be bringing his godfather back because he didn't think he could stand to lose another person, especially since the circumstances came about because of him. Though he heard several people scream his name and tell him no, he was intent on getting to Sirius. Remus tried to grab hold of him but he managed to dodge then leaped through the veil, fully intending to bring Sirius back.
Standing there in what appeared to be a misty room of no identifiable color, Sirius couldn't see a doorway but he could feel a rustling wind at his back and hear a whisper of voices. Some of them sounded very familiar but he couldn't place them. Confused, he tried to remember what happened. All that seemed to come was the battle then falling. After that, he couldn't remember anything.
Just as he was about to go exploring, he was pulled into a massive bear hug. Startled, he wasn't sure what to do until he saw James. Grinning, he hugged his old friend tightly. It was then that everything clicked. He had fallen through the veil. Really, though, he couldn't find it in himself to be upset about it. There was a peace in him he hadn't felt in so long so he could handle it.
After letting go of the grinning James, he saw Lily. Immediately, he hugged her tight then joked, “Looks like you're going to have to put up with the two of us once more, doesn't it?”
Grinning at her old friend, she put her hands on his cheeks then shook her head. “No, Sirius,” she told him softly, eyes sparkling. “You're not staying.”
Confused, he looked at her then glanced at James, who was nodding as well. “Not staying? What do you mean? I thought...” trailing off, he shrugged not sure how to explain what he had to say. No, he didn't feel any trepidation about anything bad, he was just confused was all.
“You're going back, Sirius,” Lily told him, smiling. “Harry will be here in a minute to take you back.”
Looking alarmed, Sirius stammered, “He went through the veil? How? Why? And how can I go back?”
“Harry,” was all Lily said, smiling. “He's very special and can do this once but only once. He's going to take you back with him.” Face taking on a serious look, she said, “I need you to listen to me, Sirius. There are some things you need to know and do when you get back. I need you to make me a couple promises too.”
“Anything for you, Lily, you know that!” He told her, nodding.
“This is going to change Harry. It was something that needed to happen. You have to be there for him to help. First, it's going to create a bond between you, one that is unbreakable. Let it happen, Sirius. He's going to need you more than you know. James and I won't be upset over what happens with it, will we, James?” She asked, looked at her husband.
“Not at all,” the tousled haired man said with a smile. “We both know that you will care for Harry the way he needs you to and be there for him. The rest that happens is just part of it.”
Though confused by that, Sirius nodded.
Clearing her throat to draw his attention back, Lily smiled at him once more when he was looking at her. “Harry is going to change. No, he's not going to morph into some kind of odd creature but something is going to happen. Going through the veil is going to trigger that. It might be confusing at first, for both of you, but it needs to happen. Harry is special, more than any of you know, and the Wizarding World needs him. This isn't in the way Albus thinks either, Sirius. Harry is going to change our world, for the better. In this, there is no black and white but something in between. You're going to get help from a faction that you won't expect and you need to walk away from Albus. It has to come, though, or our world will be gone, destroyed by people that mean the best but don't do the right thing.”
Alright, Sirius was even more confused by that but he took it in, nodding, assuming he would understand when the time came or she would explain more.
“You and Harry are going to share a special bond but there is one other person that will share it with you. You will both know when you come in contact with him again. Harry will know when he touches him. Go with that, it's meant to be,” Lily told him firmly. “There is a purpose for it. All of this you'll understand when it happens, I promise. It won't seem so murky as things go on.”
“I'll take your word for that, Lils, 'cause right now it sounds damned murky to me,” he laughed, shaking his head.
“It'll become clear as it goes on, trust me.” When she saw him nod, she pressed on. “There are two very important things you need to do for me, alright? First; get Harry away from Petunia! I never wanted him there in the first place but Albus took it upon himself to do that.” Shutting her eyes, she was able to funnel some of what she had seen when it came to what her sister, not to mention my brother-in-law, had done to her son to her old friend. They weren't the best and were fuzzy, but she could get them through to him. When she opened her eyes, she saw fury in her old friend’s gaze. “No more, Sirius! It has to stop. I want him with you where I know he'll be protected, loved and cared for.”
Gritting his teeth, Sirius growled then said, “Consider it done. No more! He stays with me!”
“That's what I want. With you he'll be fine and get what he needs. Same with the one that will join you,” she nodded. “Next; get him away from Albus! What he has planned for my son is wrong! He's read the whole thing wrong and doesn't know everything. It's time he stopped playing with my son's life! He might be smart, but he doesn't know everything.”
Now, Sirius trusted Albus, he really did, but there were doubts about him since he had been sent to Azkaban then got out. He normally shoved them aside but sometimes...Looking in Lily's eyes, he nodded, “I'll get him away.”
“There is one that will offer to protect you. Take him up on it. It will be rough for you both and go against what you know, but he'll keep his word.” Leaning forward, she gave him a kiss on the cheek then said, “It's almost time for you to go back. Harry's coming for you.” Stepping back, she leaned against James, who slipped an arm around her then said, “Go find him, Sirius. Send him our love. He'll know you saw us.”
Though he didn’t want to leave his friends, he knew in some way he had to go. After a sad smile and a wave, he turned and walked away. Quickly, he heard Harry's voice calling him then made his way in that direction.
After walking a short distance, though he didn't know how far because everything looked the same, he ran into Harry, literally, almost being bowled over by his godson as he raced around looking for him.
“Sirius!” Harry exclaimed, wrapping his arms around his godfather, holding him close, tears in his eyes.
Holding Harry tightly to him, Sirius, too, had tears in his eyes. Only Harry would defy death to come after him. Remus... it would hurt him to lose another friend, but he wouldn't do something like this. Only Harry would. Feeling himself tingle all over as he held the young man, he shut his eyes, reveling in it. It felt so good, so right, that he didn't want to let go.
Pulling back a little, Harry looked at the older man, smiling. He, too, felt the same thing. It was odd but he didn't mind it. All he knew was that it hadn't felt like this with anyone before, no matter who it was. Nor did he want it to end. However, he wanted to get them out of here, wherever here was. “Let's go. People are going to need us.”
Letting a couple fingers stroke down his godson's cheek, Sirius smiled at him, “I'm sure plenty are in a panic and distraught right now over what you did, Harry.”
“I don't care! I had to get you!” Harry told him, looking mulish.
Unable to help himself, Sirius grinned, “I get it!” Stopping, he looked into the young man's eyes then said, “Your mom and dad send their love.”
Looking around, Harry asked, “Where are they? I mean, I don't even know where we are!”
“We're on the other side. That veil is the doorway to death. How you can get us back I don't know, but, apparently, you can. I don't think, because you can manage that, you could see them.”
Looking confused, Harry nodded, wondering about that and wishing he could see them, even just for a minute. He didn't dwell on that, though. Instead, something was telling him, he didn't know what, that they had to go. “Let's go then.” Taking Sirius' arm, he led him back the direction that he had come from, sure this was the way.
It only took a short walk for them to find the veil. An invisible wind rippled it, making it sway as though a breeze blew through it and, from the other side, they could hear voices but couldn't understand them. Holding Sirius' hand tightly, Harry looked at him then grinned before stepping through it.
Looking at the veil that both his old friend and the young man that he swore he would help protect went through, Remus felt as though his heart was broken. He had been too late. Too late to grab Harry and keep him from following Sirius to his death. Tears streaming down his face, he ignored the fact that the battle had all but stopped around him and there were plenty of others crying. The only thing that he could think of was that Harry and Sirius were both gone. This wasn't supposed to happen!
Staring at the veil, he wondered what he was supposed to do now. This wasn't something he could just move on from like the deaths before. He just knew he couldn't. So much had happened that he didn't think he could take that both Harry and Sirius were gone when they hadn't been back in his life that long at all. It felt like everything had just been taken from him.
Vision blurry through the tears that were streaming down his face, he just looked at the last place he saw both of them, ignoring everything around him. Then, suddenly, the veil began to ripple in a way he hadn’t seen it do before. It wasn't like a breeze blowing through it but like someone was pushing it aside. After that, Harry stepped back through into the room, followed by him pulling Sirius back. Stunned, unable to believe his eyes, he wiped away the tears and stood, staring. It was them! Both were back.
Taking off, ignoring the gasps and people calling out Harry's name, he reached the dais. Pulling both of them down, away from that damned veil, he yanked them into a bear hug, holding on, almost not believing it was them. “Dear Merlin, you're back.”
After a long minute, he pulled back and looked at both of them then asked, “How?”
Harry just shrugged and Sirius said, “Just Harry being Harry.”
Hugging them again, Remus muttered, “Right now, I don't give a damn just so you are here!” Pulling back again, he touched the both of them to confirm once again that they were back then just grinned like an idiot, not sure what else to do. Finally, he shook it off and looked around. Making sure his wand was in hand, he guided the two to a safer place though it looked like the battle had completely ended. Aurors, ones that didn't come with them, were there as were many from the ministry. Fudge, it seemed, had also appeared. He seemed to be babbling to Dumbledore about something. Albus was glancing over at them, an astonished look on his face.
Figuring he better get Sirius out of sight before Fudge saw him then had him arrested, he pushed them all to what appeared to be a corner that was out of the line of sight. “We have to get you out of here, Sirius.”
Peering around the corner, making sure to keep a hand on Harry, Sirius looked at the Minister of Magic then sighed, “Yeah. I need to get out of here.” There was no way he was going to risk getting Kissed right now. No, he had something to do, a purpose, and he planned to do it. It was just a matter of how the hell he was going to manage it.
As they were trying to come up with a viable option for getting Sirius out of there before the wrong people saw him, Dumbledore came over. Looking at the two, he still had a slightly shell shocked look on his face but said, holding out a small vial of some kind. “Take this, both of you. It'll get you to my office. Wait there for me. Minerva will be alerted and join you. We'll work things out from there.”
Nodding, Sirius kept a hand on Harry then they both grabbed the vial at the same time. Feeling a familiar tug behind the navel, they were portkeyed away, landing safely in Dumbledore's office.
Settling into a chair with Harry sitting beside him, Sirius just looked at the young man, smiling. What do you say to the being that just defied death to get you? That he didn't know. Reaching out, he rubbed Harry's head then said, “I think that there are going to be a lot of changes for the both of us this summer.”
Looking at his godfather, just relieved that he was even sitting there, Harry could do nothing but nod. He felt different right then. He didn't know what it was but it was different. Maybe it was that trip through the veil and he would shake it off in a day or so. That he didn't know. Nor did he know how to describe it. It was as though something had shifted in him somewhere. What it was or how was beyond him though.
Scooting closer to his godson, Sirius put a hand on his back. He really didn't know what to say to him. There was so much floating around in his head that he didn't know where to start. Nor, really, did he want to say anything right now. With the portraits already gossiping about all kinds of things and speculating over what was going on, he knew not to say anything that he didn't want to get back to Albus. Right now, everything he had to say fell into that. Leaning closer, he whispered, “Tonight, after everyone is asleep, get that mirror I gave you so you can get ahold of me. We really need to talk.”
Thinking about that mirror, Harry felt ill. All this could have been prevented if he had used that damned thing instead of going off half cocked. Putting his head in his hands, he shook then said, “That mirror! I forgot all about it!”
Rubbing the young man's back, Sirius soothed, “Don't beat yourself up over it. With all the stress you've been under and what was going on, you weren't thinking straight. Hell, you were panicked and doing the only thing you could think of. We won't discuss that, Harry. And you won't worry about it. Everything happens for a reason.” Lowering his voice, making sure only Harry could hear it, he said, “And part of that is what I need to talk to you about, alright? I think it was meant to happen. Don't beat yourself up over it.”
“I can't promise that one but I'll try, alright?” Harry told him, slumping, looking at the floor. There was a lot of guilt over this mess and he was sure it wasn't going to go away easily.
“We'll talk about it later. Until then, try,” Sirius soothed. “Hell, Harry, I would have done the same thing you did if things were reversed and I probably wouldn't have remembered the thing either.”
“I know but still...” Harry trailed off, head dropping down. Staring at the floor, he started to shake at the ramifications of how bad this could have been for everyone involved.
Sirius was about to say something to him when the door opened and Minerva, followed by Poppy, bustled in. Straightening up, though keeping his hand on Harry's back, he looked at the two women.
Looking at the two, eyes overly wide, the deputy headmistress stepped over. “Sirius? Albus told me...” stopping, she swallowed thickly then looked between the two before saying in a whisper, “you two went through the veil!”
Nodding, Sirius said nothing, just looking at her.
“Sweet Merlin's mercy!” She breathed leaning back against the desk. She had gotten out of St. Mungo's right after the students had left on the rescue mission and had been frantic since. Looking at Poppy, who, too, was wide eyed, she said, “Albus said to check them over and that they will probably need something calming. He said he would be bringing the others back with him when he comes.”
Though looking shocked, the medi-witch went about her business, checking the two over then giving Harry a calming draught. Just as she was finishing, Albus came in and told her the others were waiting for her in the infirmity. Nodding, she gave a stern look to the two before bustling out.
Seating himself in his rightful place behind his desk, Albus popped a lemon sherbert into his mouth then leaned back. “I believe there is much to talk about.” When he saw the two nod, he began to ask questions so he could figure out what was going on.
Later that night, after everyone but Remus had cleared out of Grimmauld Place, the two were sitting in the kitchen drinking a beer. Both of them were beyond exhausted over what had happened that day but Sirius needed to talk to someone before he got ahold of Harry.
After another sip of the beer, he said, quietly, “Remus? I need to tell you some things but it has to stay between us. No one else can know, alright?”
Looking at his old friend, the werewolf nodded, “As always, Sirius, it stays between us.” This was nothing new. After all, the two of them shared many secrets that no one else was privy to. He would do it again without thinking nor would he reveal anything Sirius told him, no matter what.
“This is going to be strange, trust me, but I swear it happened,” Sirius told him, rubbing a hand over his face then launching into the whole bit with Lily and what he was told.
Sitting there listening, Remus stared at Sirius, trying to make sense of what he was being told. It was all so strange that he was certain that it was nothing but a hallucination of some kind. However, the fact that Harry had managed to pull them both back through the thing that was supposed to be a one way trip made him wonder if it wasn't.
After Sirius finished the tale, Remus looked down at the table, brow furrowed. “Are you sure this wasn't a hallucination, Sirius? Or something like that?”
“It wasn't. There is no way I could know that Harry was coming for me. It's all clear, Remus, all of it. Everything Lily said, how they looked, all of it. It was a bit strange, you know, but it was like talking to you right now.” Sirius told him softly, looking intent.
Nodding, Remus thought it over. Honestly? He thought it might be real. The hallucination bit came from what he heard about people who had been dying or were what was considered dead then came back. That, from what he had read, had more to do with a lack of oxygen to the brain and other things, causing funny visions. This wasn't the same. The minute his friend had gone through the veil, he would have been dead, not like lingering with a chance of coming back. No, that veil was a one way trip no one survived, at least that he had heard. Sighing, he rubbed his face then said, “Alright, let's go by the assumption that this is real. Now what?”
“I'm keeping my promise to Lily!” Sirius told him firmly, a determined look on his face. “Harry is not going back to that hellhole and I'm getting him away from Albus!”
Nodding, Remus sighed, “I can understand that and will help but the question comes to how? I mean, with how Albus is about Harry, this isn't going to be easy, Padfoot.”
Scrubbing a hand over his face, Sirius sighed then shook his head. “I don't know. That's the problem. There has to be a way but I don't know what it is. We have to come up with something.”
Nodding, Remus stroked one finger over the opening of the bottle he was holding, trying to think. The problem was, after all that had gone on that day, he was just too tired to logically look it over from all angles. Finally, after a few minutes, he said, “How about we sleep on it. We have a few days yet before Harry gets out of school to come up with something. As stressful as this day has been, we need some rest.”
Though Sirius didn't like that and wanted to hash it out, having some kind of plan in place before he talked to Harry, he could see the wisdom in it. He was so tired and strung out by all that had gone on that he couldn't get his brains to work the right direction let alone come up with a complex plan that would work. No, time was needed to come up with something. With a sigh, he nodded, “Yeah, good idea. We need to just let it rest tonight and see what comes from there. We have a meeting with the Order tomorrow. Maybe that can jog something, somewhere.”
Nodding, agreeing completely, Remus reminded him, “We were always good at thinking on our feet when it came to things. Maybe that's what needs to happen here. Let's see what the meeting jogs then we can go from there.”
Sighing, shoulders slumping, Sirius nodded. “Alright. Sleep it is. We both need it.” Standing up, he stretched then downed the rest of his drink before bidding Remus a good night then heading to his room.
Remus watched his old friend go, brow furrowed. He, too, was tired but he doubted sleep would come easily or that he would stay that way without there being nightmares. However, he needed to try. Finishing his drink, he rose then followed Sirius up the stairs.
Sitting crosslegged on his bed in the Gryffindor tower, Harry had the curtains drawn around him with a privacy spell he had learned long ago put on them. The mirror was on the mattress in front of him and he was sitting there looking at it. Though he was tired, well, more like exhausted really, he felt he had to talk to Sirius. Picking up the mirror, he called for his godfather and waited. Within a minute or so, Sirius face appeared in the thing. Grinning, he said, “Hey, Sirius!”
Grinning back, Sirius chuckled, “Hey yourself, Harry!” Serious expression sliding across his face, he then said, “We need to talk about some important things. Do you have a privacy spell up? This isn't something that I want anyone to overhear.”
“I have something up,” Harry nodded.
“Alright. This is going to be strange, I know, but some things were brought up when I talked to your parents. I want to fill you in then we'll hash it out.”
Settling back against his pillows, Harry said, “Go for it.”
“Your mom said some strange things to me and I think you need to know.” Slowly, Sirius then began to walk Harry through all Lily had told him.
