Harry Potter and the coup de grâce.
Harry Potter had a bad feeling about today, as he came out of the floo network, and into the Ministry’s atrium. He’d had this feeling ever since he had woken that morning, and had begun to get ready for another day at the Auror’s office.
The feeling he had, had been getting worse ever since he sent his second child off to school about ten days ago. He’d had a niggling feeling that he was missing something, especially after seeing Draco Malfoy nod at him at Kings Cross Station, and with the smug look he seemed to hold.
The first thing that Harry noticed, was that it seemed that there was hardly anyone at work that day; even the security check at the elevators was missing. At this, he quickly grabbed a lift and was on his way to his office, when suddenly, a lynx patronus was in the lift demanding his presence in the ministers office at once. When the patronus disappeared, he pushed the button for the ministers level and waited for the doors to open.
The first thing that Harry noticed, when nearing the Minister of Magic’s office, was several people standing in the lobby, and acting as if they didn’t know what to do. Here, he simply nodded to their confused faces, and quickly went into the office.
“Potter”, Shacklebolt yelled, “come in, quick, and close the door”!
“Eh, Kingsley”, Harry scowled, “mind telling me what’s going on”?
“In a minute”, the Minister said, as he began warding the office for any eavesdroppers. “Now, I think that should do it, so, sit down Potter and I’ll get right to the point.
“It seems that not only have three-quarters of the public went missing, and the same for the Ministry’s employees, but most all the shops in wizarding areas have mysteriously closed up today”, Shacklebolt explained.
“Well”, Harry contemplated, “it must be some pureblooded holiday then”.
“Never has been one on this day, Potter”, the Minister replied. “There is not enough wizards to run the Wizengamot, nor this ministry for that matter, and there’s no way that any business can be conducted as it now sits. Plus, a message was sent from the Muggle Prime Minister, in that it seems that huge tracts of land have just disappeared off the map, and nobody can remember where they were. Hell, the people who would have lived and worked there are now living in inns, hotels, and motels. They simply moved away, not knowing why, and the land simply disappeared”.
“This is not good, Kingsley, not good at all”, Harry growled out. “It sounds like the work of dark wizards to me, and we have to find out what’s at the root of it”!
“That we do”, Kingsley replied, “and I have already called the Wizengamot together, or what is left of them, to try to determine what exactly has happened, in order to let the Prime Minister know before noon today”.
“Do you think any of them will know”, Harry asked?
“I don’t know”, Kingsley remarked, as he wiped the sweat from his bald head. “However, we are going down there now, since they’re meeting in the main chamber”.
“Now”, Harry wondered?
“Yes Potter, now, so let’s get going”, Shacklebolt said, as he stood from behind his desk, and made his way to the door. “Come on, no need to take all day; you can get you some coffee or tea when we get there”.
Harry clamped his lips shut, and followed Kingsley from his office, into the lift, and down to the main Wizengamot chambers. Just as he stepped inside, he was shocked to see that only three remained on the Lords side, and about seven was missing from the Commons, along with the Chief Warlock. As he looked on, he noticed that the ones whom were left were all halfblood, muggleborn, or muggle sympathizers.
“Come, Harry, sit up here with me”, Kingsley stated, “since we seem to have many empty seats".
Once the Minister was seated, he banged the gavel sharply, several times, upon his podium, and the ones in the chamber quieted down.
Kingsley did a quick head count, and noticed the same things that Harry had already. “Hear ye, hear ye, this meeting of the Wizengamot will come to order! Minister of Magic, Kingsley Shacklebolt, presiding”!
First off, a tall, weedy wizard from the lord’s side stood, and addressed the Minister. “Minister Shacklebolt, I have no idea where my fellow lords are today, but I fear it may be that the rumor is true, in that they have fled the coop, so to speak”.
“What do you mean rumors, Lord Kelly”, Shacklebolt inquired, “I have heard no rumors”?
Just as Lord Kelly started to explain his position, a huge dragon patronus shot into the chamber, breathing white flames and smoke, while staring down the ones seated.
“You were warned”, the patronus bellowed, “all of you, and you kept letting the muggles take more and more away from us, the purebloods and the magical beings, and the lords of the magical lands. You took our magic, our holidays, our rituals, and our way of life, piece by piece, and shat upon it, so now we no longer know you. As far as we are now concerned, there is no longer a Ministry in London, and we do not answer to you, only to the new laws of the land, and the new Ministry of Magic. The old way has been brought back, along with the old laws, and the property regained that you gave to the ever encroaching muggles. We know you not”, the patronus ended, and disappeared from sight!
There was an uprising in the members present, one trying to talk over another, and Shacklebolt had lost control of the ministry.
“Treason, is what it is”, one shouted!
“Criminals”, another shouted, “the whole lot of them”!
This continued on until the doors of the chamber were slammed opened, and in walked Minerva McGonagall, the Headmistress of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
“SILENCE”, Minerva bellowed, while using a sonorus charm. “Now that I have your attention”, McGonagall complained, “I have a very serious item to report. Eighty percent of the children at Hogwarts have been un-enrolled, and taken to other schools, that is, according to their parents”.
“WHAT”, Harry shouted!
“That”, McGonagall flatly stated, “is what I said, Mr. Potter. All the students from Ravenclaw are gone, and all but one Slytherin, five Hufflepuffs, and about the majority of Gryffindor are all that’s left at the school. All missing are purebloods, along with several halfbloods, and most of the families were either neutral, or on the side of You-Know-Who during the war. One family stated that it was over the recent house elf legislation that was passed here, without having a full Wizengamot to hear it, during one of the old holidays.
“As it is, now, the school will have to close after the first quarter, as we will not have the funds to operate such a large building, especially with no more money coming in than there will be at the end”.
“Well, that’s, that’s...”, Harry sputtered.
“It is called”, Minerva explained, “a coup de grâce”.
“Well, Merlin’s saggy balls”, Shacklebolt exclaimed!

I would like for someone to continue this story that could do it justice, as I do not have time to write it. If you would like to continue it, please ask in a review, or send a message to me through this site.
This is an idea I’ve had for a while, but I just can’t get the time any more to write this, along with the other unfinished work I already have. Some may not understand what is written, but that would kill the story if you knew too much of the plot. Hhowever, anyone who has read book seven should be able to figure a lot of it out, like who the dragon patronus belonged to, that there's fifty total members of the Wizengamot, and who was the only Slytherin student, etc. The storyline, in place of chapter two, gives a rough description for the rest of the story, as I see it, but all will be revealed to whomever wants to adopt it. I would imagine this equalling or exceeding twenty some chapters in length.
Last, please tell me that everyone knows what a coup de grâce is? From a review, which was deleted, I thought I would add this. If not, it is a mercy killing, in the shortest of terms, or to put something out of its misery. In other words, the old ministry was mercifully and silently killed off, by the people, instead of having a violent ending.
