THE GREEN DRESS
by lordoberon
Chapter 1
The first touch came when Ginny was in Hogsmeade shopping with Hermione. She was so miserable that she didn’t even notice it at first.
She felt unwanted. She felt unneeded. She wanted to smack Harry, and yet she also wanted to never look at him again. She wanted to throw herself into someone’s arms and cry, except Ron was just as stupid as Harry, and Hermione’s arms just weren’t comforting in that way that a strong man’s arms would be.
She would have confessed to any one of her brothers, except that she didn’t want them to have to tell Harry that he was making their sister cry. She wanted Harry to realize himself that he wasn’t being a good boyfriend, or friend, or anything.
So when she was out, and a hand just drifted across her shoulders to move a strand of hair, she didn’t notice. When someone opened the door for her and Hermione as they exited a shop, she didn’t notice.
Even Hermione didn’t know that they were being followed. Ginny’s misery was a cloud over them.
After an hour of it though, and a cup of hot butterbeer, Ginny decided that she was done being miserable over Harry Potter. She had just bought a fantastic cloak for winter that she didn’t really need, with the help of Hermione’s money. And that just made her more frustrated, that she couldn’t afford it herself.
So she sat back in her chair. “Hermione,” she said, “I think I’m done with him. I really can’t stand it anymore. He doesn’t notice me. He barely talks to me. He spends zero quality time with me. I know he’s shy, I know he just has so much on his mind...but I’m a human being. I thought he loved me. I don’t feel loved at all.”
And I don’t feel desired, she didn’t add. It was weird for Ginny to have a boyfriend who didn’t immediately want to touch her. Harry was normal with everyone else, but when they were alone, he struggled with conversation, and he didn’t do anything more than put an arm around her shoulders. Somtimes he kissed her, but it wasn’t enough for her. She wanted more kissing, more talking, just...more!
She was embarrassed to admit it, but it was killing her. The lack of intimacy was too much. After years of boyfriends who were too touchy-feely, it was embarrassing to say that she would love a kiss, or a grope, or even for him to just lie around on a couch with her.
Harry was an oblivious fool though. She’d known he didn’t know how to manoeuvre a relationship. It had been endearing. The way he stumbled over his words...the way he blushed around her...it had been cute.
But his nervousness, it seemed, had become a sort of fear of her. That, or he just wasn’t interested anymore, and didn’t know how to break it off. Perhaps he didn’t have the guts. Ha! The hero of the wizarding world, who had killed Lord Voldemort but a year ago, and was currently training for Auror position, and he couldn’t even tell his girlfriend that he didn’t want her anymore.
Hermione leaned across the table and grabbed her hand, jolting Ginny out of her thoughts. “I’m sure he loves you, Ginny. He just isn’t very good at showing it. He’s a total dunce. You just have to have patience with him. I’m sure he’ll come around.”
“Hmph.” Ginny pulled away from Hermione’s hand and flipped her hair over her shoulder. It had grown into long red waves now, and it was thicker. Her body had developed more in her last teenager years than it had before. She was seventeen, and the world was supposed to be her “oyster”, as the Muggles said.
“I’m sorry, Hermione. I’m just so tired. I’ve been waiting. Now I feel just...empty. I don’t think I have anything left for him anymore.”
Hermione looked at her with a downturned mouth. Ginny felt that prickle of tears in her eyes, and she knew she was kidding herself. She still had some affection for Harry. If she was truly empty, then she wouldn’t care...she would just walk away and not look back.
“But maybe I’ll give him one more chance,” Ginny said, forcing a smile on her face. “Dad got promoted, after all, so I have a chance to dress up at the Ministry Christmas party. Want to help me find a dress?”
“Sure.” Her friend smiled at her, and Ginny could tell that Hermione was pleased. Even Hermione, although she sympathized with Ginny, even she seemed to want Ginny to stay with Harry. Even she seemed to value Harry’s happiness so much...she was happy with Ron, so she just didn’t understand Ginny’s pain.
It was time to spend more time with Luna, perhaps.
It was on that thought, as she left the pub and dove back into Hogsmeade’s winter crowd, that Ginny felt the hand. It drifted long fingers up her side, and then slid in to grope at her breast. It took her a second to even be angry about it, because she was so in her own head. And when she did, it gave her a flash of bitterness – at least someone noticed her, desired her, wanted her. Why couldn’t Harry?
She whirled around, hand lifting her wand out of her pocket, but when she fully turned, wand raised, the culprit was gone.
A few people passing by stared at her. Hermione grabbed Ginny’s arm.
“What is it, Ginny?”
Ginny searched the crowd for a guilty look, a leer, a turning back, anything. But everyone went about their business, wrapped in cloaks and furry hats, empty bags or bursting ones full with Christmas presents in their hands.
“Just some perv, I guess.”
She turned back, and they started to look for the dress shop. They had never visited it before.
A familiar face sprang out of the crowd at her, and Ginny grabbed his arm. “Hey. Theo Nott, right? Do you know where the dress shop is? We can’t remember the name.”
The short blonde glared at her and pulled his arm way. “I don’t know.”
He stalked off, and Ginny and Hermione looked at each other. Why had they gotten that reaction? He’d been in Dumbledore’s Army not so very long ago...
When they returned to Hogwarts, Ginny’s ire was confirmed when she ignored Harry all night, and he didn’t even notice. One ‘hey’ was all she got.
Later that night, she lay in bed, flopping down heavily with a sigh. Why didn’t Harry understand? She’d thought that he was intelligent, interesting, charming, funny...she’d told him before that she appreciated him...they’d even dropped the word ‘love.’ She had gotten angry with him before, and he had apologized...she didn’t want to do it again. She just wanted him to care. How bad could he be at showing he cared, if he really did? Wouldn’t it just pour out of him?
She wanted more than talking, too. Ginny had to admit it. She had an appetite. She liked to look at men, and kiss them, and tease them, and flirt with them. Some people called her names for it. She didn’t care. Outside, all they saw was her kissing boys. They didn’t know her inside. They didn’t know that she wanted love, too, not just the physical thrill. She was still a virgin. She wanted to save it for the right person, even if she did tend to kiss people left and right...
The next day, Ginny decided she needed a day to herself. It was wonderful to walk on the road to Hogsmeade, with snow coating the trees and making everything white. She wore her new blue cloak over a pair of dark pants and a light blue turtleneck. She wore her favourite pair of earrings – a blue drop with a pearl, given to her by Fred a couple years ago.
Again the crowd, again the pushing, shoving, and twisting just to get to any shop. Hogsmeade was a popular place during holiday seasons. Students were there today, too, shopping for presents, skiving off classes. She avoided anyone she saw in Hogwarts robes, because she didn’t feel like talking to anyone and pretending everything was alright. Sometimes Ginny’s tongue ran away with her. Also, sometimes when she got angry, people didn’t understand, and just put it all up to her fiery red hair. She hated that!
She paused in front of Honeydukes, huffing in the cold. She watched her breath fog the glass, and then stared at her reflection glaring back at her. Her usually pale cheeks were pink from the cold. Her full mouth frowned, and her blue eyes that everyone seemed to love were cold in anger. She had left her long hair out today, and it frazzled out from her scarf in mad tangles. Growling, she shoved a hand through it to try and yank them out, but that only tangled it more.
Turning away from that face, she stepped back into the rush. It was after lunch, so even more people were around.
She was outside the dress shop, having searched for half an hour already, when the second strike of the groper came. This time, she noticed his warm hand, with long fingers, because he lifted her cloak aside in order to reach in and cup her breast. Oh, he was bold. She was on a lone hill, staring down at the shop she’d found. Anyone could see!
She turned her head only a little. Who was it? His hand was still on her.
There was no one there. Shock flashed through her whole body and made her shiver. There was only one person she knew with an Invisibility Cloak. “H-Harry?”
There was no reply. Ginny turned back around. All of her anger was gone now, because she was so shocked. What was going on? Harry had never touched her like this before. Had Hermione said something, and now he was apologizing again? Had he seen her in her new cloak and liked it so much that he finally felt some desire for her entire into him? Maybe...
When he moved closer to her, she allowed herself to sink back into his arms. “Oh Harry...” She whispered. She felt simultaneously relieved and angry and nervous.
His hand left her breast, and he just held her. It felt so good. Comfort and relief flooded Ginny’s body. She wanted to kiss him. She wanted to yell at him. She felt better in his arms than she had felt in months.
But he was taller, and his arms were more muscular than she remembered. His body heat was so warm against her. She knew something was wrong, and when he leaned down a little, she knew it wasn’t Harry. And it made a deep disappointment strike through her.
But she let him – and this was why people called her a whore behind her back – she let him, whoever he was, lean down, and brush her hair away from her neck. She let his lips brush softly across her cheek, and gasped in pleasure when his tongue wandered over her ear.
He thrust his tongue in, and the move was so sensual, so needy, and his tongue was so hot and wet. Ginny moaned low. Her hands were back, cupping his face – when had that happened? – he had a little bit of stubble on his cheek, which she found sexy. Harry never did that. This man’s hair was long, and silky against her hand when she pushed it back behind his ear. Who was he?
His tongue was amazing. When he began to worship her with it, sucking at her ear like it was the last thing he wanted before he died, Ginny couldn’t help it. A whimper came from her mouth. They were drawing back then, into the shadows, and his hands crept beneath her cloak and up beneath her shirt. She allowed him to touch her, knowing full well she could blast him with her wand if she wanted to. She just wanted to see...
His hands were just as good. His fingers stroked over her breasts, cupped them lightly, and then played with her nipples. He groaned low and good into her ear, loving her breasts. They always did. His fingers warmed her, rolling her nipples between a thumb and a finger. She was very sensitive, and her nipples were big. They always liked that, too. With his fingers on her, Ginny moaned. Oh, this was good. It had been too long. She felt a heat rising in her.
But the heat in her made her angry. She didn’t want to give herself to some stranger out of loneliness. That was pathetic and stupid! Yes, he was skilful, but he was also a stalker and a pervert, and rich enough to have an Invisibility Cloak, but too cowardly to show who he really was.
She ripped herself out of his arms, losing her cloak in the motion.
“Coward!” She shouted. “Why won’t you show yourself?”
She reached out and grabbed his Cloak, and yanked it. He laughed a low, delicious laugh that sent a thrill through her aroused body. She glimpsed a strand of dark, curly hair. Then he Apparated away with a loud crack.
“Shit!” Ginny threw the Cloak down along with hers and collapsed onto her knees. “Stupid Merlin fucking pervert. I hate him!”
She stared down at the blue of her cloak, pushing her fingers into the cold snow beneath. Her hands trembled, and her legs shook. She was freezing without her cloak, and her nipples were erect. It just reminded her of how good his hands had felt, and how wonderful his tongue had been. She stared down at the cloak, not really seeing anything, and let hot tears drop down from her face onto her hands.
Why did every man have to be a pervert? And then when she got Harry, who was actually nice, he didn’t know what to do with her? He didn’t know how to love her, kiss her, touch her, talk to her...she didn’t want to teach him. She didn’t want to wait. She wanted love, and touches, and someone who would be kind, right now. She needed to be cared for. She was sick of feeling lonely.
Taking a deep, shaky breath, Ginny sat up. “Pull yourself together, Ginevra,” she said. “It’s time to go find a dress.”
She tucked the Invisibility Cloak into one pocket. A shiver meandered up her entire body. She had an Invisibility Cloak! And it wasn’t borrowed from Harry! Oh, the things she could do...
Laughing, she slid and stumbled down the snowy hill. Now she could have some fun! She checked her face in the glass of the store, and magicked away the blotchiness from crying, and stepped inside with a smile on her face.
The store keeper was a young man about ten years older than her. She saw the appraising look on his face as she entered, and then the shock as he really got a good look at her. It made Ginny laugh now, instead of despair over Harry. She knew she was attractive to men. Sometimes it got old, but right now, with an Invisibility Cloak in her pocket, she felt good.
“I want a dress for a Christmas party,” she said, smiling. “Something sparkly and fun, please. It doesn’t have to be long-sleeved. I can always use a warming charm. Can you show me your greens, blues, and blacks, please? Also multi-colored. No robes, thank you.”
Immediately the man left the counter and soon had a bunch of dresses. Ginny thanked him with another smile and brought them into the dressing room with her.
The first dress was a long-sleeved one colored a beautiful dark blue. She knew it made her hair color stand out, and her eyes. The sleeves were thin, revealing skin beneath. The thin material went all the way to the chest, stopping just below her collarbone, making it fairly chaste. The dress flared out at the waist into a wide circle, with pleats. It was the sort of dress Hermione or her mother would pick for her. Ginny immediately disliked it, even though the color was lovely.
The second dress was black and shimmery, and it went all the way to the floor. It had no back, which was sexy, and Ginny contemplated it for a long time. The neckline was rounded, the straps too strappy, but she liked the emphasis at the waist. She knew she had a smashing figure, with a round bottom and enviable breasts. She wanted to show them off. She would make Harry wish he treated her better. Or she would break it off with him, so that when he saw her, he would regret his dullness and inexperience with women.
Then there was a red and green dress that was far too Christmasy. The furry dress reminded her too much of Narcissa Malfoy. The pink dress, well, it was pink. And then there was a brown dress, which had a great cut and flashed a bit of leg, but it was brown.
The last dress was green. It was so dark, it was close to black. Ginny stared at it in the big mirror outside of the ladies’ dressing rooms.
The dress had short sleeves that just covered her shoulders. The neckline was a deep V, and paired with a nice bra, it would really show off her cleavage. Ginny snickered. Her mother would hate it. But she liked to give a little glimpse of her assets. The dress was velvety and warm, and easy to move in. At the waist, it pinched in, and there was a strip of sparkly black cloth that reached back to become a small bow behind her. The back of the dress was an even deeper V, revealing most of her back. Below the waist, the dress was also tight, sheathing her figure. It stopped, with little beads of green cloth scrunched together, right above her knee.
Wow. She loved it. This was the one! Ginny twisted around, and grabbed the tag from the string on the back to look.
Oh. Oh, no.
She turned back to the mirror, crestfallen.
A heavy step behind her, and a hand on her shoulder. “This is by far the best one. Let me get it for you.”
Oh, Merlin. She hated immediately that he had offered her money. At least it wasn’t the goggling store clerk, and someone else. Where had he come from? Had he watched her in every dress in front of the mirror? Ginny turned around, and then had to look up.
Her mouth dropped open a little bit, and stayed open. The man who was apparently rolling in galleons was extremely handsome. Ginny’s instinct at his offer had been to dislike him, because she hated favours from the rich. But Merlin, he was fucking gorgeous! She almost swore aloud when she saw him.
Yes, he had shiny black boots, expensive black trousers, and a grey shirt that was just so clean and perfect it was almost disgusting. Yes, his nails were round, perfect, and clean. Yes, he had a fancy, sleek coat draped over one arm. But his grey shirt hugged a slender waist and showed off powerful broad shoulders. He had biceps to die for. His skin was lovely and dark, unblemished. The shirt neckline revealed the cords of his neck and his bobbing adam’s apple as he got a good look at her. It also showed a bit of hair from his chest. His frazzled, wild black curls had been yanked into a ponytail, but the hair band was failing. Escaped curls lay on his forehead, and little wisps tickled at his cheeks. He needed a bit of a shave. He smirked at her with a teasing, sexy mouth that had a pouty bottom lip. And his eyes, whoa! They were a bluish green, startling in his dark face, and intense. He looked her up and down admiringly.
Ginny stood up straighter and tapped her wand a little, as she placed her hands on her hips in that business likeway that her mother always did. “I don’t take favors from strangers, thank you very much. Especially not men.”
She turned her heel, and was walking away, even while watching those amazing eyes look at her arse in the mirror.
“Fine then,” he said smoothly. “It’s your loss, not mine.”
He shrugged his coat back onto his shoulders – god, those shoulders! – and left the shop.
“Hmph.” Ginny stared at herself in the mirror, and then her eyes drifted to the side, to the stranger. He was outside the shop, and having an angry-seeming conversation with Theo Nott. Oh, no! A Slytherin? Not that they were all bad, but...still. Somehow it was worse because he might be a Slytherin.
Ginny sighed, and went into the dressing room again. She wished she could have that handsome stranger. That was a man. Handsome. Financially independent. Strong in his opinion.
A snivelling, proud, hunky Slytherin...ugh! He’s probably Malfoy’s friend, she told herself. She stripped the green dress off with anger, and after waiting for a while, hoping the stranger would be gone, she got her things back on and left the shop.
He wasn’t there. Shit. There went her chance. A prickle of disappointment came in her, but Ginny ignored it.
But for the next week, she thought about him. She even dreamed about him. She sat in class, and had to have Luna and Hermione get her her homework, because she was sinking into obsession over a man she didn’t even know.
It had happened to her before. She had been ten years old. And he had had green eyes and black hair. But his name had been Harry Potter. With him, information about him had been all over the newspapers, and in First Year adventures that her brother Ron was all too eager to tell about.
With the Stranger, she was totally in the dark. She wanted to know who he was. Where did he come from? Had she seen him before? It almost felt like it...and was he in Slytherin? She didn’t hate them all, no, they were people too. But they tended to be pretty shady. Could she trust this man? Probably not.
Then, stupidly, she thought about the Groper, too...how he had touched her, with delicate, nimble fingers...how his tongue had glided over her so well it had pulled moans from her...how warm his hands had been, and how good it had felt to have any hands on her at all.
Then, one day, a strange owl came to visit. It was lunch time, and she lying on her bed, her face hurting from crying. She had just had another fight with Harry this morning. She had told him to wake up, and he hadn’t known what she meant; he had just stared at her like an idiot. He hadn’t said anything to her since. She didn’t want him, she kept telling herself. And the more things like this argument happened, the more real it became.
The owl was a welcome distraction. It tapped on the window and woke her from her angry stupor. She walked across the room and flung open the window. The owl was a dark brown, and it looked at her calmly. A long box was tied to its feet.
She untied it, and the owl just looked at her. What, did it want money?
She grabbed her wand from her bed, and then opened the box.
“Oh!”
It was the green dress. A flush spilled hot over Ginny’s face. Unbidden, her hands grabbed the dress. She held it up against her body, and then, giggling, went to stand in front of the mirror.
“Oh GOD. Now I owe him. What does he want? Oh Merlin. How will I ever pay back all that money? No, no, I should send it back.”
She stared at her reflection in the mirror. If she wore this dress at the Ministry Christmas party, she would be making a statement. Harry would regret losing her. Anyone who met her would be impressed that Mr. Weasley, who had just been promoted, had such a lovely daughter. She would be on her best behaviour. She would not make eyes at any men, unless they were nice men worthy of her attention. She would be gorgeous and unattainable. She would be confident. She would be happy, because this dress was matchless.
Because she couldn’t help it, she tried it on. She changed into her best bra, and slipped into Luna’s high heels.
Wow! She looked good. Damn good. Sizzling good. Oh GOD. “How can I say no now?!”
She went back to the box, and found a letter at the bottom.
