Harry was crying. It was weak, but he couldn’t help it. He was sick, sore all over, and cold, as the biting October wind chilled him with every strong gust. He had thought they were being nice, for once, that after beating him so badly they were going to be kind and actually let him go trick-or-treating with Dudley, but instead they tied the sheet he was wrapped in over his head and threw him, hard, into a back alley. They’d thrown him away. He knew they hated him, but he never thought they’d actually throw him away and not come back. He’d been huddled in the corner for a full day now- no one cared about a scruffy, beat up child like him.
He also knew he couldn’t stay here anymore. The local drug dealers were getting annoyed. Once had a really big dog that chased him. His sensitive ears picked up the sound of the dog again, and he sighed, standing. There was no point in staying; they weren’t coming back, not for a freak like him. So he wandered out of the alley.
He must have smelled or something, because the dog snapped it’s lead from the cursing drug dealer and took off after him, snarling and barking. Harry ran, but the dog was slightly faster. He jumped and dodged and weaved as best he could but there was nothing he could do. He felt dizzy, hot, and achy; and as he turned to look back at the dog, unknowingly shifting from asphalt to pavement as he ran, he felt himself fall. He turned forward in time so see that he had run all the way up someone’s driveway when the door made contact with his head.
~
“Kreacher! Get the damned door!” came a barking, laughing order as the house-elf made his way down. One leg was badly mangled and before the elf even managed to get there, a short, dark-haired boy stood in front of him.
“No, I’ll get it. Rest, Kreacher.” Said the boy, opening the door. At first it seemed that no one was there, and then he looked down.
Blending into the snow was a boy wrapped in a white sheet, obviously sick and with blood trickling down his face. The boy couldn’t have been any older than eight. “Mum!” he called, forgetting in his haste that as a ten-year-old, he was supposed to call her ‘Mother’, like a big boy. She came into the hall, took one look at the child, and screamed.
~
Harry opened his eyes slowly. He was laying on a couch, there was a really, really bad taste in his mouth, and a man in a white coat- a Doctor maybe- was talking with people in the corner. He was tired, so tired. He wanted to sleep, but he didn’t want to impose on the strangers… he was tough, he could make it. There were things he could do to make money, at least until he was old enough. Or he could go to child services.
~Poor little one. Hatchlings are sacred, should not be treated this way.~
He looked down, and saw a giant snake curled up by the fire. ~A talking snake?~ he said, slowly.
~Oh! How intriguing, you can speak?~ she hissed. ~All serpents and serpent-kin speak, my dear, but only those humans with the gift of Parseltongue can understand us. To other humans it seems as if you speak our language.~
~Ah…~
~Is there something you need, little one?~
~I’m very thirsty… I don’t know where I am… and I really don’t want to be a bother to anyone…~
~Poor little one. You aren’t a bother, in fact, Parselmouths are considered prized and you will be taken care of very well. But let me see about your drink, hm?~
The snake slithered over to a man he couldn’t see very well and hissed lowly as Harry’s head began to throb. Soon the crowd of people and the doctor came over to him, the Doctor stalling anything they had to say while checking him. “Are you in any pain, little one?”
“Head hurts…”
“To be expected, it will go away after you drink something.” He said, handing him a glass of water. The man was tall, with wild looking eyes and a mane of thick grey hair… he just didn’t seem normal, human, and Harry wondered why, but he wasn’t going to argue.
“Well, Fenrir?”
“Now hold on… so impatient…” he muttered as he helped Harry drink his water. “Now, we have a few questions for you if you’re up to them?”
Harry nodded. “Okay. You didn’t have to bring me in, so I suppose questions is only right.”
“Well said. Now the first, what is your name, child?”
“Harry… I’m not sure what my last name is. I was never allowed to go to school with the other kids so I never had to learn. I heard it once but I can’t remember very well right now, I’m sorry.”
“No, its fine harry, we just needed something to call you. What’s the last thing you remember? How did you get through the wards?”
Harry blinked, cocking his head to the side. “Wards? I don’t know what they are… but I was running, and really, really scared, because the dog was chasing me.”
The doctor frowned. “Why was the dog chasing you?”
“Well, my aunt and uncle… I live with them, or rather I did… they left me behind… I stayed where they left me in the alley because I thought it was just another punishment, that they’d come back in a few hours and beat me and take me home. But they didn’t come back, and the drug dealer got really mad at me because he couldn’t take his customers there if I was watching. He let the dog after me.”
“Why would your family leave you behind?”
Harry shrank back. “Because I can do things.” He admitted. He’d have to either leave, or be beaten again, but he could survive that. And the snake said his gift, Parseltongue, was valuable, so maybe he wouldn’t be abandoned, who knew? He had to hope. “At first, I tried really hard to be normal like they wanted. But no matter what I tried, the odd things kept happening. When I realized it was me doing it, I tried to control it…”
He didn’t tell them that he had used it to defend himself. They might not want him anymore.
“So, a muggleborn, then?”
“I wouldn’t say so, not if he has the ability of a Parseltongue.” Said the man with the snake, who came out of the shadows. Harry thought the man was very beautiful, he was about thirty, like the mail man that his aunt had a crush on, with scarlet eyes. Harry felt himself drawn to the man and would have gotten up to be closer to him, if only for the fact he was so ill. “Hmm… interesting… Fenrir, check his magic levels, if you please.”
The doctor, Fenrir, took out a short stick and waved it, numbers and graphs appearing in the air. “Strange. He was entering magical exhaustion, but now it’s like… he’s regenerating at a massive rate.”
The scarlet eyed man came forward, and touched his shoulder. Harry felt decided strange, like he had decided to take a bath in cool soda, the bubbles all around him, making him feel stronger and better… then the hand was taken away, and the man redid whatever he had done with the stick.
“And now they’re… normal. If you can call this normal, his core is huge.” The doctor said.
“Harry, what do you know about magic?” the man who made him feel strange said.
“Magic?” he blinked. “Magic was one of the things that weren’t allowed. Even Dudley wasn’t allowed things from Disney, not if it had any magic in it at all, they said it was freaky and abnormal… do I have magic then? They used to call me an abnormal freak too.”
The red eyes seemed to grow even redder, and that bubbly feeling was back. The other adults clasped their hands to their arms like they were in pain, but it stopped soon. Too soon, Harry liked the bubbly feeling. “Yes, Harry. You are a wizard, but more than that. You have the gift of Parseltongue, which means that you can talk to serpents. Parseltongue was usually seen in only one or two families, and it’s very precious. You also appear to be a Dark Siphon.”
“What’s a Dark Siphon?” he asked innocently.
The others were looking at him strangely now, almost reverently… like aunt Petunia looked at that statue of the man on the cross in the kitchen.
“A Dark Siphon is someone very special. To put it simply, Magic has three forms, Dark, Light, and Neutral, or chaotic. Within each of these branches are spells, and the way they are classified is based on what is required to cast them. Light magic is ordered, the spells are based on Runes and Arithmancy, with carefully measured power through the use of a wand, taking only from your own core. Neutral magic is the magic used by those with abilities that require a specific blood to cast, like being able to See into the future, or set fire to things with only will. Do you understand so far?”
Harry nodded. It wasn’t too difficult, even if he didn’t understand some of the words.
“Now, Chaos Magic is magic that relies on willpower to manipulate the element closest. It’s very hard to do, and most don’t use it. Neutral Magic is usually paired with Light Magic, and chaos Magic is usually paired with Dark Magic. Dark Magic requires sacrifice. You need both the intent, the spell, the power and usually be willing to give something up, whether that is a drop of blood, a hair, or even something intangible like the emotion you feel at the time. Special people are born with chaos Magic known as the Siphon ability. You see, a long time ago, Dark Magic was, for lack of a better word, cursed. The people with Light and Neutral Magic didn’t like how strong Dark Magic was becoming. So everyone who practiced it too much, would lose their way, become crazy, uncoordinated, and ugly.”
“That’s awful. Why didn’t they work on being stronger rather than making everyone else weaker?”
The man blinked. “That’s…something I never considered… but anyway, continuing. Chaos Magic can create a Siphon for Light, Neutral, or Dark Magic. The Siphons only show up when and where they’re needed to preserve the balance. For a Light magic user, they might make spells stronger. For a Neutral user they could take away any pain or unintended results from ability. But for you, a Dark Siphon, you act as a filter. You felt something when I touched you, right?”
He nodded.
“That’s because you were cleansing me. I am a very powerful Dark Magic user, and because I use my powers regularly, the changes from the curse started to take place. Before I touched you I had a patch of scales on my hand.” He showed him the hand, and there were no scales, at all. “The beginning of my body starting to twist. But because I touched you, you purified the taint and I’m fine again.”
“I understand.” Harry said, and he did, well, sort of. “It means… that like a filter on the tap sorts out the icky things, you can run your magic through me and I’ll sort out the icky things for you, so they don’t build up.”
He blinked. “Exactly. But you see, a Dark Siphon, because they are so very rare, have laws on them. It means that in order for you to purify my magic, I should go to your guardians and plead my case. This means we have to find out who they are.”
“My relatives hate me.” He said, while the doctor did more… spells, he presumed, with the stick, which must be a wand. “And I hate them. Besides, if they abandoned me, doesn’t that mean I don’t have to go back?”
“Were any of them like you? Could they do things?”
“No.” Harry said, looking up shyly. “They hated it when I did. I didn’t mean to hurt them, not really… but it’s just that I was so hungry, and the toast was stale, it wasn’t like Dudley was going to eat it anyway, so I didn’t see the harm in me having one bite of stale toast. I couldn’t take any more beatings, I was so sore and hungry, so… I think it was my magic… tried to protect me.”
“What happened?”
“They were screaming. Twisting around on the floor like someone was beating them. I kept going until I started getting really dizzy, and that’s when they threw me away.”
The red eyed man looked vaguely impressed. “Interesting. Well, you aren’t going to get in trouble for it here, that’s for sure.”
He perked up. Not in trouble? At all? “Thank you.”
“My Lord,” said one of the women, with pale skin, really big breasts and dark hair, “We do have another room available.”
“Walburga!” Orion snapped.
“Orion, stop. I wanted him too.” She said, looking sad, and making a strange gesture with her hand on her middle. “But the fact remains, Regulus’s twin died. Fenrir said the boys are the same age, and he looks close enough to pass if it weren’t for those bright eyes of his… and we can pass that off as a recessive trait. He needs a home, Ori, and we’re missing a son.”
“My Lord.” Orion said, obviously her husband. “Forgive me for speaking out of turn, it’s simply…”
“I understand. Harry… would you like to stay here with Walburga and Orion? They have two sons, Sirius, who is thirteen, and Regulus, who is ten like you. You would be their brother. They are a Dark Family, though you would have to be in therapy to get over the things the muggles did to you.”
Harry thought. “I don’t really know them, I mean, I just hit my head on their door… so I don’t really know if they’ll like me, but I’d want to try at least…”
“Then how about, for six months, you stay with us?” Orion smiled, but the smile was tense. Harry knew he really didn’t want him around, but apparently his wife did. “You’d have to go to school then anyway, and it’s enough time to put you to rights, and get you shaped up. Then, if you find someone you prefer, we’ll sign over custody-“
“And if you don’t you are welcome to stay. Though you will have to take a new name since you aren’t sure about yours.”
“And for some reason, the genetics spells aren’t working. I think he well and truly is an abandoned child.”
Harry nodded. “I’d like to try for six months then, thank you.”
