A/N: OK guys, longer A/N at the end of the chapter, but just a couple things before we begin: This story follows canon until 6th year where Dumbledore doesn’t die (I couldn’t kill him off!) After that, there are quite a few things that don’t follow the original stories. Also, the first few chapters will be smut free, I’ll post a note when the smutty chapters begin! OK all, read on and enjoy! :D

Chapter 1- A Surprise
Hermione Granger looked around her room. This is beautiful! As Head Girl this year, she had a room to herself. Covered in deep reds and golds, it was breathtaking. And I don’t have to put up with the craziness that always surrounds the other girls in Gryffindor. And the sex noises. Yeah, I won’t miss those one bit. Hermione loved her friends, but the fact that they all had boyfriends this year would’ve made for a horrible time trying to get sleep, and with her extensive N.E.W.T schedule, Merlin knew she needed it.
She wandered over to her bed, sitting down on the lush red comforter. Looking around her room, she was comforted by the sight of all her things unpacked on the shelf. She walks over to her trunk and looks inside to finish unpacking her clothes. If Harry and Ron were here right now they’d make fun of her for doing things the “muggle” way, but it was comforting to her to do things this way, the way she used to before Hogwarts. It kept her mind from wandering to other… unsavory thoughts.
Before she knew it, she was unpacked and, checking her watch, she realized that she needed to start walking to the Great Hall for the opening banquet. As Head Girl, she was able to apparate into Hogsmead a few hours earlier than the rest of the school was set to arrive, so she had time to settle in so she could attend to the inevitable issues that always surrounded the hectic nature of the first day back.
As she walked down to the Great Hall, she let her mind wander to the most pressing subject on her mind right now: the Head Boy. Whoever he was, he hadn’t revealed himself yet, and she was nervous to find out who he would be, especially since she was pretty sure it wasn’t a Gryffindor. Maybe Terry Boot? He’s a Ravenclaw, obviously intelligent… yeah, I bet it’s him. Even though Boot was a year younger than Hermione, the war the year before had forced the merging of her year and the year before hers, putting her in the same classes as Ginny.
The next thought to pop into her head was of her friends who wouldn’t be returning to Hogwarts this year. She knew that not all the kids her age had returned, and her new graduating class would be made up of mostly Gryffindor’s and Ravenclaw’s. She could assume that most Slytherin’s wouldn’t be returning to complete their seventh year, especially since many of them had both parents who were incarcerated and, therefore, had to work to keep up their financial status. As for the Hufflepuff’s, she wasn’t sure why many of them weren’t returning, but she had her suspicions that many in the kind-hearted house could not bear to return to the school where many of their friends and families had perished.
As she entered the Great Hall, her eyes were immediately drawn to the pictures adorning the walls. Every person to have perished on the side of the light during the final battle now had a portrait hung in their memory around the Great Hall. Hermione felt her eyes well up as she gazed upon the faces of those she loved and lost during that bloody battle. She shook her head, trying to clear her head of these destructive thoughts.
“Miss Granger, if you will approach the Head Table please!” The voice of Professor McGonagall, Hermione’s favorite professor by far, reaches her across the Great Hall. She walks up towards the Head Table, seeing if she catches sight of Terry.
“Hello, Professor,” Hermione greets the older woman with a smile.
“Hello, Miss Granger. I trust your room is to your liking?”
“Of course, Professor. I love it! Although I haven’t seen Terry Boot yet, when is he to arrive?” Hermione asks, hoping that McGonagall would have some answers as to her missing counterpart.
“Well Mr. Boot will be arriving with the others on the train, Miss Granger. Why do you inquire as to him? You know only the Heads were granted permission to arrive early.” McGonagall is obviously confused, which only serves to perplex Hermione more.
“Oh, I thought Terry was the new Head Boy this year. I haven’t seen who it is yet today, and it seemed obvious that it would be a Ravenclaw…” Hermione stops speaking as she hears a familiar drawl behind her.
“Well, Granger, sorry to disappoint, but you won’t be sharing anything with the Ravenclaws this year.” Hermione spins around, greeted by the smirk of none other than Draco Malfoy. And he is standing way too close to her for comfort.
“Malfoy? You’re the Head Boy? How in the world!...” Hermione trails off as she catches McGonagall’s frustrated huff behind her.
“Miss Granger, Mr. Malfoy, I had hoped that the two top students at Hogwarts would be mature enough to put childish arguments behind them. If you cannot, however, you must tell me now so I can replace you.” McGonagall obviously has no patience for this right now, and continues to lecture the two, “And I need your decisions quickly, because you two need to reach an understanding before the students arrive in half an hour, because you two will be the role models for the younger students this year. This silly house animosity needs to end, now. I had hoped you two would help me in this endeavor, but if you will not, tell me now.”
Work with Malfoy? Is she crazy? But I want this so bad, I always have… I’ll be damned if Malfoy keeps me from having the job I’ve worked so long and hard for. If anyone quits, it’ll be him, but I won’t.
“No, Professor, I’m sure we can come to an…understanding.” Hermione finally answers, choking a bit on the sour taste the words have left in her mouth.
“Mr. Malfoy? Any objections?” At the slight shake of his head, McGonagall nods. “Good. Now put this behind you. There are some things you need to have accomplished soon, and you will need to brief the prefects about patrol schedules tonight after everyone is in their houses, and…” Hermione quickly tunes the professor out, having read over what they needed to do already. Instead, her thoughts were on the new Head Boy. Why Malfoy? Out of everyone our age, why the ex Death Eater?
“Any questions?” McGonagall’s voice snaps her out of her thoughts.
“No, professor.”
“Good. Since Mr. Malfoy only arrived a few minutes ago, I would assume you two have some things to discuss, and patrol schedules to make. Off you go!” McGonagall walked back up to the head table, turning to speak to Dumbledore.
With a huff, Hermione walked out of the Great Hall, turning toward the Head Rooms, assuming Malfoy would follow.
