A Pairing of Spectacles
By: Hush_the_Ravyn
The sunlight breaks through the blinds creating bright patterns upon her yellow walls. The pale buttercup turning to a mellow sunshine. Hermione winces at the cheerful décor seeing the room through the eyes of a person far behind her years. The collection of stuffed animal plushes, the white school desk with its crayons and coloring pages, even the pictures of her childhood heroes on the walls, all of it to childish for her now. The war could still be felt in the months after its completion. Everyone said that the only thing left to do was to move on, but she just couldn’t.
Her Hogwarts letter lay untouched on her bedside table. The thick envelope reminding her all too clearly of all the classmates, family, and friends that had perished in the final battle. I need to open it today she thought. Tears formed in her eyes as she shakily reached towards it and they fell as she let her hand drop without touching it. She got up and decided maybe a shower would help things out.
After her shower Hermione gathered her courage. Grabbing the letter she calmly broke the wax seal and began to ease the paper out. She had almost gathered her resolve when a golden Prefects badge fell onto her quilted bedspread. The words Head Girl stamped neatly onto the front. Tears began to fall down her cheeks as she looked towards the letter.
Ms. Granger,
It is our pleasure to welcome you back to complete your final year of schooling at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Should you accept this offer the position of Head Girl would be yours for the school year? Do not feel burdened however as you also have the option of coming to the school before term to take your N.E.W.T.S. in lieu of a 7th year. The choice is yours and I look most forward to your response.
Kindly,
Minerva McGonagall, Headmistress
Her hands shook as realization sank in, I don’t have to go back. I can just go take my N.E.W.T.S. and move on with my life. I don’t have to see the stares or face the pity in people’s eyes as they look at me. A small smile graced her lips at this thought. But as quickly as it appeared it vanished. No, she thought, I have to go back. The war may be over but there is still prejudice. I have to set an example. So with a shaking but determined hand she started to write to the Headmistress.
After eating breakfast Hermione grabbed a cloak of the coat hook and Apparated to Diagon Alley. Walking down the busy street she could still see some of the scars from the war. The new windows in Ollivander’s, the mismatched cobbles from the spells that hit the street. All these stood out blatantly obvious to Hermione but the one thing she noticed most of all was the lack of school-aged children. She hoped that there would be more but knew that their numbers had decreased greatly. She gathered her supplies and decided to stop in at the Wizard’s Menagerie.
As soon as she stepped into the pet shop she could feel a magical feeling. Looking around she saw all the different animals, the owls and cats even the frogs. Her eyes formed tears as her thoughts drifted to her beloved Crookshanks. Remembering the final time she saw him and how he jumped in front of the curse that had been about to hit her. Turning to leave she suddenly stopped when her eyes alighted on the most beautiful owl she had ever seen. It was an average owl but she had a deep chestnut body and a beautiful cream underbody but her most distinguishing feature was the white rings around her eyes that looked like a pair of spectacles. In fact upon closer look the sign below her said “Spectacle Owl”. “Aren’t you just a pretty little thing?” Hermione cooed. As if sensing her baby voice the owl presently turned up her nose and ruffled her feathers. “Oh you’re rather sensible aren’t you?” to which the owl gave a soft hoot of agreement. Hermione thought about it only for a moment before deciding that a sensible pet was what she needed and presently bought the owl.
“Now I just need to find a name for you.” Hermione stated.
“Why are you talking to that owl, Granger? It’s not like she can speak back, or are you just that pathetic that you believe she can?” drawled a sardonic voice by the door.
A/N: I know I posted this yesterday but I finally figured out how to fix it so here it is in all its original glory. I’m awesome at editing just not so great with all this technology whatnots. Hopefully I’ll have the next chapter up by Sunday. Thanks again for reading!
