Severus Snape stood outside the Potter house in Godric’s Hollow, staring at the destruction, feeling his heart break. He ran into the house, stepping over James Potter’s body and running up the stares, heart in his throat. When he pushed open the door to the nursery, he collapsed, sobbing. Lily, his beautiful Lily, lay on the floor, her green eyes glassy in death, her wand hanging loosely from her cold hand. He gathered her body to him, crying and holding her close, his hands running through her hair.
“Oh Lily, my love. I’m so sorry. Lily.” He choked on his tears, holding her closer, kissing her dead lips.
A sound from the corner of the room broke him out of his revelry and he looked up, his eyes meeting scared green, as he stared at the boy, huddled under the remains of his crib, a cut on his forehead bleeding, running down his face. Severus stared at the boy, looking for any sign, any small chance, that the boy might be his. But he couldn’t be. Not with James Potter’s face. And his hair. This boy was a Potter, through and through, there was no question about it. Severus couldn’t bring himself to move, to comfort the boy. He couldn’t do it. This boy, the boy that should have been his, this boy had seen his mother die, and he was terrified, but Severus couldn’t move, couldn’t go pick him up and comfort him. He just couldn’t.
The door behind him was pushed open and Severus looked up, staring at Albus Dumbledore as the older wizard pushed his way in, looking at the destruction in the room. He regarded Severus with sad eyes before walking to the corner, picking up the Potter boy and wrapping him in a blanket that only had a few pieces of debris on it. He strode over to Severus and laid his hand on the skinny shoulder, squeezing lightly.
“It was for the greater good, my boy. It was all for the greater good.”
With that, Dumbledore swept out of the room, no doubt on his way to distribute the Potter boy to Black so that the dog could raise the boy to be the spitting image of his father and his godfather. The boy would be the bane of his existence in just ten years time.
Severus stood, exiting the room with one last look at Lily’s body, a farewell dying on his lips. He needed to find the Dark Lord and report to him.
“Albus, are you sure about this?”
“Yes, Minerva. The boy must be with blood relatives. This is the safest place for him.”
“But Albus, Lily is not related to this woman. You know as well as I do that she was adopted. We cannot leave him here.”
“We can and we will. The boy will never know his mother’s true heritage. As far as Harry Potter will know, Petunia Dursley nee Evans is his aunt, and she will be raising him.”
“Very well, Albus. But I have a bad feeling about this.”
“I’ll take that into account, Minerva, but this is for the greater good.”
“Vernon! Look at this Vernon!” Petunia Dursley stared down at the basket that waited on the front stoop of her perfectly respectable house. It was a blight on the perfect image that she worked so hard to present. It was horrible.
Vernon lumbered down the stairs, huffing slightly. Petunia rolled her eyes but stepped to the side, allowing her husband to look down at the basket and the bundle inside it.
“Is that a child?”
“Apparently my sister is dead. Some of her kind want us to take it in. What should I do, Vernon?”
“We aren’t keeping that thing! I’ll take it to an orphanage, where all the freaks belong. Don’t you worry, Tuney, I’ll take care of everything. You just get our Dudders his breakfast.”
Petunia nodded and watched as Vernon stooped down and picked up the basket, looking at it in disgust as he walked to the car. Once the basket was in the boot, Vernon climbed in, waving at Petunia before driving away.
When Jonas Whitley opened the door of the orphanage and found the basket on the stoop, he sighed. Another baby left abandoned because his family couldn’t handle him or didn’t want him. It was a shame, really. He picked the basket up and carried it into the building, setting it down on his desk. Poor kid. He was beautiful, really. Messy black hair and sleepy green eyes. The kid had to be over a year old, at least. Jonas picked him up, checking him for injuries. Other than the scar on his forehead, it looked like the kid was in perfect health.
Jonas looked in the basket again and saw an envelope. He picked it up, frowning. The Dursley family of Little Whinging was written on the front. Had this child been left for this family? Who would leave a child with nothing but a letter? It was cruel. He opened the envelope to read the letter.
Dear Dursleys,
Young Harry has lost his parents in a most unfortunate accident. As Petunia is his only living relative, it behooves you to take the boy in and raise him as your own.
Someone will come and collect him on his eleventh birthday. Until then, I must ask that you care for him, feed him, and clothe him. Recompense will be delivered directly to your bank accounts.
Do remember that this is all for the greater good.
Albus Dumbledore
Jonas frowned and looked at the child, stroking his cheek.
“Well, Harry, it would appear that you’ll be staying here for a while. Don’t worry. I’ll take care of you and before you know it, a lovely family will be adopting you. The young ones never stay here long.”
Somewhere in Wiltshire, a man stood in the wind, frowning. Something had gone wrong. The Potters had died. It wasn’t supposed to happen, but it had. The mission had been to get the boy and get out. Bringing the woman, if they had to, but getting the boy. Something had gone wrong though. Someone had known they were coming. When he had finally arrived, James and Lily Potter were dead and there was no sign of the boy.
Now he had to search across England, trying to find this child. And it had to be done soon or his Master would take his wrath out on him. That was the last thing he wanted. Damn Albus Dumbledore and his order of the fiery chicken for ruining everything. They did nothing ‘for the greater good’, no matter what they said. All they did was ruin plans that were good for England, plans that would benefit the Wizarding World. If Albus Dumbledore had his way, within ten years, there would be no Wizarding World.
No, it wouldn’t be allowed to happen. Instead, he would find the Potter child and take him to his Master, so that he could finally begin his true plan. Then, after the child had been properly trained, his Master would be able to take control of the Wizarding World once and for all.
He couldn’t fail. It just could not happen. Malfoys did not fail. Soon, he would have the Potter child and his reward.
