Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter. I make no money from writing this here story. |
Note: This is just an idea I've had for a while. I'm not sure if it's ever been done. I'm sure it has... But... This is my take on it. Hate it if you will, love it if you can :) Thanks for reading.
Hermione was absolutely devastated. No... More like crushed, and vulnerable as she sat in front of Minerva McGonagall, simply falling to pieces. It had been one month since Severus Snape died a cruel, unfair death, and she couldn't, for the life of her, seem to get herself over it. All the thoughts in her mind of what she could have done to save him kept plaguing her. She felt weak and tired. The thoughts would keep her awake at night. Needless to say, she hadn't slept for almost the entire month. The image of his eyes growing darker, if at all possible, was the only thing she could see when she closed her own.
As she sat in the elderly witch's company, she tried to find the words for a thought she had. This was all she could ask:
"How-how many turns..." she sniffled, trailing off as she wiped her eyes with her sleeves. Minerva sat staring at the younger witch with a perplexed look on her aged features. "How many turns, what, Miss Granger?" she asked softly, also still feeling quite emotional over everything that had transpired. Severus Snape had been like a son to her. A snarky, sometimes rude, and over-bearing son, but a son, none the less.
Hermione sat back in her seat, letting the tears fall, heavy and plentiful as she laid her palms flat upon the desk that used to belong to Albus Dumbledore. Albus... Another reason for her idea. But, mostly Severus.
"How many turns on the time-turner... would it take to go back to 1977?" she asked finally, eliciting a sharp gasp from Minerva. The older witch placed her hand over her heart as if she'd felt it skip six beats. "Miss Granger... I know that you want to do the world some justice, given the knowledge that you now possess, but... If you were to go back to 1977, you would never be able to come back! Not to the current time!"
The dam of tears broke harder in Hermione as she fell forward to rest her head on her hands. Minerva watched; heart heavy with sadness of the scene unraveling before her. "Just tell me why, Hermione..." she said softly, reaching over to place a hand that she hoped to be comforting upon the young witch's shaking shoulder.
"I, just... I -" Hermione trailed off as she sat back up in her seat, trying with all her might to regain a level of composure. She just kept seeing his face...
"I need to do it, Headmistress. I can't keep going on knowing that he lived such a cruel life. I can't. I've already said goodbye to Harry and Ron. If you don't help me by letting me know how to do it, I'll figure it out on my own." Hermione sniffled, pulling the time-turner from her pocket. She stood up and placed the gold piece around her neck.
"Miss Granger... Don't do it here." Minerva said, getting up to go around to her. She stood in front of her with a sad smile on her face. "Go to Spinner's End. To his house. Do it there. Use your wand on the time-turner. Use the incantation: "Accipite me, ut 1977," and it shall do it for you. If you do insist upon doing this, Hermione... Show him a good life."
Hermione nodded with tearfilled eyes. "I have to. I loved him so much, and I never told him..." she sobbed. Her frame becoming wracked with trembles once more. "I'm going to do it." she nodded.
Minerva nodded, pulling Hermione into a warm embrace. "I suppose this is goodbye then. Yet, I suppose you and I will... hopefully meet in the past." she smiled at her; eyes brimming with tears.
Hermione nodded, and without a lot of difficulty, she left the Head office and departed from Hogwarts as she knew it.
Sooner than she was really ready for it, Hermione found herself in front of Severus' house in Spinner's End. 'What do I do when I get there? Go up and knock on the door?' she thought to herself. If things turned out right, she was hoping to be able to place herself in the summer before Severus was to begin his seventh year at Hogwarts. She smiled as she thought about what it was going to be like, to go to school with him.
Hermione stood and stared up at the dingy-looking house, trying with all her might to ignore the urge to go inside. Severus was gone. Surely the place wouldn't be protected by wards. Giving into her curiousity, as she was often known to do, she gently placed her hand upon the door knob and turned it. The door opened with a creak, and she was surprised it wasn't at least locked.
Stepping inside, his scent was still alive and bright as can be. She closed her eyes as she smelled the air. It was like he was still there. Suddenly an idea came to her mind. If she was going to go back to 1977, she would need something to prove to Severus that she wasn't lying about where she'd come from. Of course, she wouldn't tell him right off the bat, but she knew she would have to, sooner than later.
As if not to disturb the peace, Hermione moved quietly through the house, searching for his bedroom. It wasn't difficult to find. Topping the stairs, willing her feet to the last door on the right, she slowly pushed the door open, revealing a tidy room, painted black. Hermione shook her head and smiled. Everything had to be black.
"Severus, you darkling, you..." she said as she entered the room. The first place she checked was the bedside table. Pulling the drawer open, she noticed a small green leather-bound book with the initials S.S. printed small and in silver on the back cover.
Gently running her fingers over the letters, she closed her eyes as if trying to feel him there before she flipped it open. She scanned through the book, his small and neat handwriting on every single line of the pages. Flipping ahead to the last entry he ever wrote, her eyes began to swim with tears once more as she read:
"It was only one time. Just once. Yet, I cannot get it out of my head. The way she so willingly opened herself up to me like I was some sort of highly revered wizard from PlayWitch Weekly, had my heart beating as I had never felt it. Just the idea that someone so lovely as Hermione Granger wanted anything to do with me, was all the same, fascinating, exciting, and frightening. Frightening, in the sense that I knew I couldn't ever give her what she really wanted: My life-long companionship. Even writing now, that I cannot ever give her such, is heart-shattering. Because I long to. With every fiber of my being, I desire it as much as she said she does...."
Hermione closed the journal, giving a wave of her wand over it to make it smaller to fit into her "bloody-beaded-bag", gave one last look around the barren bedroom, and left the house. She went and stood out of sight from potentially prying eyes and held the time-turner out from her neck on the long chain. "Accipite me, ut August 1977..." she whispered. She squeezed her eyes shut, hoping for the best, as the tinkling sound of the time-turner spinning rapidly found it's way to her ears. Her heart was pounding with fear and hope all the same. The thing seemed to spin for an eternity as she anticipated it. She opened her eyes and saw the years in Spinner's End flying by in reverse.
"This is it..." she breathed as the piece began to slow. Finally it stopped, and she looked around. The scenery had changed, but not by much. Apparently, Spinner's End wasn't a place that evolved much.
Her heart seemed to be pounding out of her chest as she made her way back to Severus' house. She knew his parents weren't the warmest of people, so how they would treat her upon finding her on their doorstep was hard telling. She only hoped that Severus himself would answer the door.
Hermione stood in front of the door, staring at it for what seemed to be years before she finally reached up and knocked. A few moments later, she heard a man bark:
"Severus! Go and answer the door, you useless boy..."
It must have been his father. Hermione's heart sank with the man's insult, but she quickly regained her composure, trying with all her willpower to remain so. She knew she was about to see him again. Sooner than she was ready for it, Severus opened the door. He stood staring at her as he folded his arms over his chest. Already much taller than her, Hermione stared up at him with a sheepish look. Severus, nor Hermione said a word as they looked one another up and down. He wore a fitted black jumper and a pair of simple black trousers. Almost like the ones he wore as a Professor. He looked just as he did in his older years, except, if possible, quite a great deal thinner. His face looked the same, though younger, and... "My Gods, you're gorgeous." Hermione breathed before she knew what she was saying.
Severus' eyes widened, yet he successfully stilfed his surprise. "Has no one ever told you, it's rude to simply knock upon a person's door and just stand there? However, appreciated... a complement may be..." he said coolly. "Who are you? More importantly... Why are you here?" he asked, stepping outside, closing the door behind him.
Hermione hadn't intended to be a bumbling fool, but right now, she was in shock. The worst part about it, was that he didn't have a clue why. Hoping he wasn't already skilled in Legillimency, Hermione decided to lie. For the time being.
"Well, you see,-" she began, glancing up at his face that now sported a raised brow. "Um... I just moved here and... my neighbor told me I'd probably like some friends my own age, so... She told me about you." she finished, smiling sheepishly at him.
"Alright then," Severus smirked, leaning against the door frame. "Which house is yours?"
Hermione was sure her heart had stopped. Surely he would know all or most of the neighbors in a small community such as Spinner's End. She looked around, swallowing hard before she decided to lie again. She didn't want to lie, but damn, he was intimidating. Even at age 17.
"Oh, it's around the bend. Just there." she pointed lazily to her left. "Ah..." Severus said. "What's your name then? Apparently you already know mine, since some mystery 'neighbor' has pointed me out to you."
Fuck. He knew she was lying. But why wasn't he calling her out on it?
"Oh, I'm Hermione." she said, extending her hand. Severus didn't move. "Hermione, what?" he asked, narrowing his coal eyes at her. God, she missed him so much.
"Hermione Granger. Do you think you might... want to get to know eachother? Before the school year begins, anyway." she flashed him another nervous grin, and was delighted to see the ghost of a smile threaten to trace his lips. Severus nodded. "Sure. Why not? I haven't got any friends. But as a fair warning... I'm sure you'll end up hating me, just like the rest of humanity." he smirked at her.
"Oh... I highly doubt that, Severus." she smiled. Confidently this time. A strange look passed over his dark features. A questioning, confused,... nervous look? "Anyway, it's been very nice meeting you. I may call upon you tomorrow if I find myself without anyone to do."
"Anyone?" Severus asked, brow raising high again before he snorted with laughter. "My my... A little forward, are we?"
Hermione blushed crimson before playfully punching his shoulder. "You know what I meant!"
"I'm not sure that I did, but... You may. Call upon me, that is."
"Okay then." she nodded; cheeks still burning hotter than ever. "Alright... Well... Have a nice night, Severus." she turned and walked away before the urge to smother him in a crushing hug became too fierce inside of her.
Severus watched until she was a little way away, and decided to follow her. He stayed behind as he watched her round the corner, and he ran to catch up to her. Just as he skidded around the same corner, Hermione Granger disapparated.
"Hermione Granger... Liar, extraordinaire..." he mused to himself. "Something is odd about her..."
Hermione arrived at the Leaky Cauldron. The only place she knew she could go to seek refuge, as she didn't know anyone in this time. Except for an extremely, deliciously dreamy Severus Snape. She longed to be able to share his bed again, but she knew that wasn't her purpose for coming back. She was here to save him. Getting him to trust her, and not to mention, love her, would take it's sweet time. She had until the end of the coming school year. Because after his 7th year, Severus would become a Death Eater.
