Chapter 1
The Minister’s Office
Hermione Granger rushed down the great hallways of the Ministry of Magic, curly hair flying in all directions, hands full of papers and plans as she hurried along. She had one destination in mind: the Minister of Magic's office. Bursting into the room, she faced the swivel chair turned towards the roaring fireplace and began, "Kings! Do you have a moment for me? I need your opinions on a few questions of etiquette."
No response came, and Hermione began to feel a sense of unease. Something was not right, and she began to realize that instead of the hat that normally adorned Kingsley's head that should be visible over the top of the chair, she could see a platinum glow. Slowly, the chair began to rotate towards her, but instead of the kindly Kingsley Shacklebolt, the Minister's chair was occupied by none other than Lucius Malfoy, who was staring at Hermione in a most peculiar way. "My dear, dear Miss Granger, I am not the man you are currently seeking, but I am happy to answer any and all questions you may have," Lucius drawled, his stormy gray eyes alight with mirth.
"Mr. Malfoy! You know I have no questions for you, and where is the Minister? Don't tell me you've suddenly returned to your Death Eater days and dispatched him?" Hermione burst out, impatient and aggravated all at once.
"Of course not, Miss Granger," Lucius said airily, waving one hand as he spoke, "The Minister merely needed to step out while we were meeting, and I was passing the time waiting for him, and I found the lure of sitting in such a powerful seat too strong to resist." With these words, Lucius rose from Kingsley's chair and began crossing the room towards Hermione and continued, "I find it interesting that you are here to inquire about etiquette, yet you feel free to let yourself into the Minister of Magic's office unannounced."
Hermione felt her ire rise as she stared at the arrogant blonde man striding towards her and responded: "Mr. Malfoy, as you are surely aware, Kingsley and I are very close, and he normally keeps this hour of the day free of meetings and appointments."
Lucius took the seat next to her and turned towards to her, but before Lucius could respond, the door to the office opened again, and the Minister appeared in the doorway, his placid look turning into one of surprise as he surveyed the two guests in his office. Kingsley looked at Hermione paternally and asked, "Hermione! I wasn't expecting you this afternoon, do you need me for something?"
As Hermione opened her mouth to answer, Lucius smoothly interjected with "I believe our dear Miss Granger had some questions for you about etiquette. Please, by all means, tend to her first. I have all the time in the world to wait."
"Um, uh, well Kings... I really wanted to just speak with you, so I'll return later when you have less company," Hermione spluttered.
"Hermione, don't be ridiculous! Lucius may very well be one of the wizarding world's foremost authorities on etiquette, so it makes perfect sense to ask your questions with him present as well," Kingsley responded as he resumed his rightful seat behind the desk.
"Oh, all right. Well, here's the situation, Molly and I are trying to decide on the location for Ron and I’s engagement party, and the Delacours have been gracious enough to offer their villa in the south of France for the party, but that requires setting up portkeys for those who cannot or will not apparate, and it seems easier to just host something at the Burrow, although France seems like such a romantic locale for celebrating love?" Hermione was facing Kingsley as she asked her question, but she found herself preoccupied as she began to feel her heart race from the gaze of the elegant man seated next to her.
"I think France seems like a wonderful idea, what are your thoughts, Lucius?" Kingsley asked thoughtfully.
"One simply cannot find a more romantic place to host such a festive event than the south of France, and I believe that with your history and Ministry contacts, the arrangement of portkeys should be no problem at all," Lucius responded with one eyebrow raised, his eyes fully trained towards Hermione now.
"So that settles it! France it is! What a generous offer by the Delacours, it would be a shame to turn it down, wouldn't it Hermione?" Kingsley inquired.
"Yes, I suppose it would be..." Hermione answered quietly.
"Alright, my dear, if you have nothing else for me, I think Lucius and I will return to business," Kingsley responded.
"Oh yes, of course, I'm sorry for interrupting," Hermione rose from her seat, gathered her things, and headed towards the door, "Cheers, Kings, I'll see you later?" Kingsley nodded his head to the affirmative, and Hermione looked at Lucius, "Good afternoon, Mr. Malfoy."
"A pleasure as always, my dear, and please, call me Lucius," the blonde wizard practically purred towards Hermione.
Hermione felt color rise on her face, and quickly exited the office without responding. Once outside the office, Hermione stood against the wall, feeling flustered and very confused. If she was talking about her fiancé and their engagement, why were her thoughts still with the powerful wizard meeting with Kingsley?
