Prologue
Holding the sleepy little boy, Sirius chuckled, grinning, when Harry tucked his head under his chin, clutching the blanket his mother had made him. Looking at James, he asked, “What's this supposed to do again? And does Lily know?”
Sitting the open book down on the table, James shook his head. “Lily doesn't know and I don't want her finding out. So, we're going to have to do this fast, before she gets back from the shops.” Seeing Remus about to protest, he held up his hand and said, quietly, “I know what we're facing here, Moony. It's serious, we all get that. Lily is laying every bit of faith she has in Albus when it comes to He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named and protecting us. I believe in him, don't get me wrong, but I want to make damned sure Harry's protected if the worst happens. That's possible and we all know it, despite everything we put in place to work with it. This is just part of that. We're going into hiding tomorrow, so I want this done before we vanish.” Stopping, he sighed then said, “The spell is just an ancient protection one, nothing more. Sirius will be the foundation for it as he's Harry's godfather, with the most power attached to him when it comes to the spell. Remus, you'll be the secondary. Between the two of you, you can protect Harry. Peter—no, he just doesn't have it in him. It's just going to let you know when there is danger and put up a shield around him to hold whatever off until one of you can get there. That's all it does.”Reading through the page the book was open to, Remus nodded, “Understood. I don't see the harm in this.” He knew what his friends were facing and the odds of them coming out alive, so he could appreciate what James said.“We'll do it,” Sirius told him firmly, rubbing the sleepy little boy's back.“Good,” James said, relieved. “Sirius, you just hold him like you are. Remus, come over and put a hand on Harry's back. Sirius will put a hand over yours. That'll make him the primary in the spell. With the two of you planning to reveal your relationship when this nightmare ends, if something happens to Lily and I, Harry will have the best protection he could ever get for the rest of his life.”Standing by Sirius, Remus put a hand on the sleepy little boy's back, feeling Sirius' rest over it. Waiting, he looked at James.Holding out his wand, James cast the spell, following the instructions in the book. In seconds after finishing, a bright golden dome-like aura shimmered around the three then sunk into their bodies. Though the book said the aura would be red, he wasn't concerned about that. It had worked, that's all that mattered. Nodding, he said, “It's done. Good. Let's put him to bed and we'll go talk. I don't know when you'll be able to come over again, so we need to enjoy it while we can.” Taking his son from Sirius, he held him close and kissed him on the top of the head before laying Harry back in his crib. Covering him up, he patted him on the back as the little boy fell asleep, then led the two out.

Megadeth
Standing in that dark, creepy chamber containing the Veil that Sirius and Harry had gone through together the year before when Bella had hit them with that spell, Remus was looking down at the floor, idly rubbing the mark on his inner right forearm through the shabby robe he was wearing. They were having a memorial service for both Harry and Sirius. His old friend and lover had finally been declared innocent the month before when Peter was found then Kissed. Harry—well, that was obvious why they were doing it for him. They weren't declared officially dead, of course, that would take a few years because there were no bodies. However, he knew it wouldn't come to that.
Shifting from foot to foot, he was trembling slightly. He hoped that could be attributed to the eerie feeling of the chamber and the emotions that were, obviously, attached to the ceremony taking place. A surreptitious glance around, showed that Arthur was looking down as well, not paying attention to him, a forlorn look there. Severus was looking at the Veil, an unreadable expression firmly in place. Moody was looking at the Minister of Magic, Rufus Scrimgeour, as he spoke, though you couldn't always tell where the man was glancing with his magical eye. Fudge was just looking at the ground, a sad expression on his face. There were a couple of others around, employees of the Department of Mysteries and a few others from the Ministry, but that was all. Thankfully, no one was paying attention to him. He was greatly relieved that Minerva and Albus weren't here. The two, because their world was once more at war with the greatest evil ever, had to stay at the school as it was still in session, to protect the students. Good. They would have hovered around him too much for his comfort.Shutting his eyes, he shuddered as that mark flared more intensely, burning hotter than it had in the past. Though it wasn't a heat that hurt, he could feel it, making him have to control himself to keep from shaking. He knew what that signal meant and anticipated what was coming. In fact, he was already rock hard from the feelings and want of what he knew was in the offing. He wanted this, more than anything in the world, and would have it soon.Tuning out Rufus droning on about the heroic fight of the two against the evil that walked their world, he shivered as a hotter flare shot through that mark, something that made it throb strongly. His instinct was to look at his watch to check the time. That, though, would just drive him nuts. Instead, he lifted his eyes and looked at the Veil swaying in that invisible wind that seemed to blow through it. It was almost time, he knew that. These last minutes were the hardest though. He had been patient for a year now, so a little longer wouldn't matter. He just had to keep that in mind.Eyes locked on the Veil, the strains of that song Harry had played, and left for him in a Muggle CD player in Grimmauld Place, resounded in his head. At first, he didn't understand it, or the meaning Harry was attributing to the song when it came to the three of them. To him, it sounded like it was about suicide. He did now, though, after playing it so much. That battle had set both Sirius and Harry free from so much and would put the three of them on the path he knew they needed to follow, one that James had started them down when he made a mistake with that protection spell. Staring at the Veil, he fought to keep the smile off his face. No, it wouldn't do to have someone see him smile. It could, of course, be attributed to happy memories of the two, but he had appearances to keep up for the moment. Those would soon be gone as well. The shabby robes would be replaced with the ones he wore all the time at Grimmauld Place. He would take the glamour off he had to always apply when he went out, one that kept up the appearance of him being tired, ill and thin. He couldn't wait to get rid of those. Harry and Sirius, both, had made damned sure he was well provided for in this last year as a way to protect him and make up for them not being around.Much to Albus' frustration, he was the only one that could get into Grimmauld Place. The wards had locked down solid with only him allowed through them. Everyone attributed that to the notion that he was the heir of both Harry and Sirius, something that couldn't be adjudicated until several years after their death because of the lack of bodies. Until that was official, or so they thought, the wards couldn't be adjusted. They were wrong. Grimmauld Place was his home and he could do what he wanted with it, including with the wards. What he had done, though many attributed it to grief at losing the two, was to hole up there, spending the year fixing the place up, making it comfortable for what was coming. He knew what they had done, and why, so there were plans to make, then many things to prepare for. Anymore, he only ventured out when he had to or was forced to by an event to make it look good. Even then, he wasn't the same, as so many told him. Of course he wasn't. That was easy enough to tell. It just wasn't for the reason they attributed it to was all. That mark now burning continuously, a deep throb emanating from it, as Remus gave a quick glance at his watch. Less than five minutes until the exact time that Harry and Sirius passed through the Veil because of Bella's spell. And it would probably be the longest five minutes of his life, he knew that. All he could focus on to help was what he knew was coming. The anticipation was killing him. His cock was rock hard under his robes and he could feel the wet stickiness from the pre-cum on the head of it. Wonderful visions of what would happen later played out, but he shoved them aside. There were other parts, some much harder, that needed worked with before that happened. His body just needed to understand that part and would have to wait on what it wanted. It would come, no doubt, but not right away.Shutting his eyes and leaning his head back, he sighed softly and quietly thanked Harry once more. The young man had understood more than anyone gave him credit for. Though Harry, like he and Sirius, had to keep up appearances about so much, especially his naïvete about many things, understood many things better than even he had. He had offered to take the position Harry had, despite how much it would go against part of his personality. In fact, he had argued more than once with Harry about that part of this situation, pointing out it would make the whole operation easier and wouldn't force the young man into a role he may regret in years to come. In the end, Harry had won and taken on the role. Now that he thought about it, he was grateful. It seemed the young man understood more than he thought he did and swore it was something he wanted, enjoying it. It was now cemented with Harry's death making it to where nothing could ever change it and was something he was looking forward to. Sirius' place in the scheme was set by James that night so long ago. Though, realistically, it had been long before that because of his personality. This just locked it down. Giving another internal smile, he found the image of anyone trying to mess with them in the future funny. If they thought Sirius has been protective in the past, they hadn't seen anything yet. And him? Yeah, they were going to learn that he wasn't as mild-mannered as so many thought. That was fine. There was someone in his life to protect, and he would, viciously. Both sides of this fight—they were in for a huge surprise, one they wouldn't ever expect.A white-hot flare, one that made him shudder from its intensity, shot through the mark and spread through Remus' body, making him fight off gasping aloud, rocking him. That throb now spread through his body, melding with his heartbeat as it quickened, making it feel like his hair was standing on end. Opening his eyes, he looked at that stone archway the Veil hung from. It appeared to look just like it had before, but he knew better. It was finally happening. For a year now he had waited for this and it was happening.Tuning out everything around him, he watched, smiling slightly when a soft crack was heard then a small fissure of some kind started to snake up the side of the archway he could see. It was time and they were coming! Finally!Eying the archway intently, he waited, shivering, hands locked tightly in front of him. He could, vaguely, still hear Rufus droning on and no one else seemed to notice. Good. Smile growing as another, louder, crack was heard and a bigger fissure raced up the side of that archway, he shivered harder as the burn ignited his whole body. Then came an almost exploding sound as the archway split, sending masonry in all directions. That got everyone's attention. Remus ignored it though. Instead, he watched, waiting to run to them.Hearing the panic and feeling someone touch him, he shoved the hand away and ran forward as the Veil fluttered towards the ground. As it did, two bodies ejected from it just before it dropped to the floor. As the masonry showered down, he ran towards where they landed, several feet from the daïs on the cold floor right before where the rows of seats started. They had done it! Just as they planned. They had come back to him right on schedule!Kneeling down, he reached out a trembling hand to touch the two, stroking, first, Harry's head then Sirius' as they lay there, eyes shut. As expected, they were covered with a slightly tinged and glowing slime-like substance. Ectoplasm as Muggles called. It was just residue from the Veil they had come back through. Hand still shaking, he stroke down their faces and whispered softly, “Welcome back.”It was Sirius who opened his eyes first. Trying to focus, breathing heavily as he once more had to learn to breathe air, he looked at Remus then grinned when he recognized him. Letting out a manic burst of laughter, he shut his eyes and waited, relishing in the sensations.Grinning, Remus nodded. It worked. There was that sheen in Sirius' eyes, one he anticipated, that seemed to make them glow manically. That told him that the others needed to stay away. Sirius and Harry would be fine with him as they would recognize the bond that was there. The rest, though—they were a threat, or Sirius would perceive them as such.Stroking down Harry's face with a still trembling hand, Remus then fingered the collar around the young man's neck. On it still hung the three tags; one with Sirius' name, another with his and the third with Harry's that said property of. They had picked it out a few months before their 'deaths' and put it on him when they did the spell that would cement the plan. Tugging it, he said Harry's name softly and waited. Though it seemed like forever, Harry finally opened his eyes and looked at him, something that made Remus grin bigger. “Welcome back,” he said softly.
Eyes locked on Remus, Harry chuckled, a grin spreading over his face. He could feel Sirius behind him so he knew it had worked. They were back and the world was right once more. Their third was with them. Breathing heavily, chest aching as it learned, once more, to accept the air on this side of the Veil, he nodded. “We're home,” he managed to say though it hurt slightly.“You're home,” Remus confirmed with a big grin.Sitting up with a loud groan, pulling his wand, Sirius put a hand on Remus' shoulder and managed to get himself into a standing position. Panting heavily from the exertion, he looked over at the small handful of people gathered and snarled, eyes flashing. Holding his wand tightly, he glared at them.Seeing what was going on with Sirius, Remus looked in the direction where the others were and understood the problem. Thankfully, one of the Unspeakables was holding them back. Helping Harry to stand on shaking legs, he put a hand on Sirius' shoulder then told him, softly, “It's fine. Nothing to worry about. I'm going to take you both home.”“You're both mine,” Sirius snarled, glaring at the small crowd. Straightening up, wand clutched tightly, he glowered at them fiercely, shaking.
Helping Harry to stand between the two of them, Remus put an arm around the shaky young man then a hand on Sirius' shoulder. Quietly, he soothed, keeping an eye out so no one came towards them, “They won't bother us, Sirius. We just need to get out of here.” This was expected. For a month or so, there were some adjustment problems for both Harry and Sirius when it came to being back. For Sirius, because of his role in the relationship, would be more protective and wary of anyone being around either himself or Harry. It would eventually settle down into something normal, but, for now, caution was required. That's why he had made damned sure plans were in place to get them out of here and holed up at Grimmauld Place with minimal disturbances for the next month. Quietly, he said, “Help me with Harry and I'll get you both out of here.”Clutching Harry tightly, holding him close, Sirius snarled at those there. He recognized some of them and, somewhere, realized they weren't a threat, but he couldn’t help it. Shaking his head, he told Remus, “Tell them to stay away.”Getting both of them moving in the direction of the exit, Remus nodded. “I will, don't worry.” Holding both as they started walking, he watched what those gathered were doing. When they were close, he heard the Unspeakable caution for everyone to stay back. Good, the man knew something about such a phenomenon. Looking at Arthur and Severus, both of whom appeared stunned, he said, quietly, “Owl me in a couple of days. Right now isn't the best time to start dealing with this.”Eyes overly wide, trembling as he realized this really was Sirius and Harry, Arthur's eyes lit on the collar around Harry's neck, not sure what to make of it. “I will,” he finally managed to garble out. The Unspeakable had told them not to go near Sirius and Harry as there would be disorientation that could lead to violence. He planned to follow that. However, he was very curious about how the two had managed this one. Looking between their faces, he could see a sheen in their eyes that almost made them seem as though they were glowing. That told him, more than anything else, that they needed to stay away. Whatever was there right now wouldn't be good to deal with.Looking at the faces there, Sirius was wary. Some were people he remembered as a threat. That put him on edge. Snarling, clutching his wand, he hissed, “Back off, now! They are mine!”Though off-kilter at what had happened, Rufus held up his hands in a placating manner to his old Auror. “No one is going to harm you, Sirius. We'll let you go on your way. Welcome back.” This was astounding. However, as nothing Dark or illegal had happened to bring them back, he wasn't going to say a word. Looking at Lupin, he imparted, keeping his tone as non-confrontational as he could, “Make sure they both know all is fine and they are in no danger from the Ministry.”“I will,” Remus assured him with a nod. “Just give me some time. They are disoriented.”“Understandable,” Rufus told him, backing away so Sirius didn't feel threatened.Looking at the astonished faces, Sirius glared at them then looked to Remus. His thoughts were muddled and confused at the moment, but his instincts were telling him that these people needed to understand to stay away from what was his. Putting a hand on Harry's head, he pulled him closer, then kissed him passionately, slipping his tongue into his mouth as he did. Holding the collar tightly, he broke it off and glared at everyone. Still clutching Harry's collar, he grabbed Remus by the front of his robes and jerked him closer, then kissed him as well. When he broke it off, he glowered at the ones standing there and snarled, “Mine!”Taking that for what it was and expecting something similar, Remus assured him, “It's fine, Sirius. Let's go home.” Gently, he began to nudge the man towards the door. Looking at those gathered there, he said, quietly, “You might want to ensure we can get out of the Ministry without being hassled. I'm not sure how they will take that.”Though still seriously unbalanced by what was going on, Rufus nodded, “I'll send word up to stay away.”Nodding, Remus guided Harry and Sirius out, talking soothingly as he did.Standing there, Snape didn't know what to stay. That was—he didn't even know where to start. Turning to Arthur, he said, “We have problems.”“Oh, we do. And this is going to get out, fast.” Arthur nodded. “I'll contact Remus as quickly as I can. You fill in the rest. Let me see what I can manage to find out.”Eyes flitting to Scrimgeour, who was busy conferring with some of the Unspeakables, presumably about how this happened, he saw Moody walking over to them. When the ex-Auror was next to him, he said, lowering his voice, “I'll fill Albus in. You two pass the word around. I have no idea how Black and Potter managed this one. That Veil was a one-way trip.”“Nothing I know could do it, even the Darkest of spells,” Moody told them gruffly, eying what remained of the archway that held the Veil, something that was now gone forever.“It is going to turn everything on its ear,” Arthur told them softly. Shaking his head, he added, “And it might not be in a bad way. The other side of this nightmare won't expect this.”“Which can only help us as we're not in good shape,” Moody told them pointedly, sipping from his flask. “Snape, get with Albus. Arthur and I will work our way through the rest. This is good. Unexpected, but good!”Nodding, Severus then turned in a swirl of robes and headed out, planning to get to Hogwarts and fill Albus in fully then see if he could figure out how the two managed this one.Looking at Moody, Arthur then glanced at the door Remus had led the two out of. Shaking his head, he said, softly, “I'll contact Remus in a couple days. Something here—that kiss and the collar Harry was wearing—I don't know what that's about. It has to be related.”“We'll figure it out, don't worry,” Moody said firmly. “With those two back, we have a better chance with this. We just have to give them time.” Nodding to the redhead, he then made his way back over to where Rufus was to see if he couldn't get information.Still staring at the door, Arthur sighed. He didn't even know where to start to explain this to everyone and had a very odd feeling that whatever plans that would start to form from it might not play out they way they wanted. He would have to wait and see with that. Shaking his head, he decided the first person he needed to talk to was his wife. Molly would be thrilled! Deciding to do that first, he headed towards the door.
