Severus Snape looked at himself in the mirror. His looks had not changed much since the final battle, only two years prior. He still had a rather large nose and thin lanky hair. His skin still looked as if he was in desperate need of sun. Sighing to himself he rubbed the large scar that ran horizontally across his throat. Shaking his head he remembered the moment when Voldemort said the spell that was meant to kill him, and how he told Nagini to “Kill.” He should have died that night. He was meant to die then, and he knew it.His knuckles were turning white from him gripping the bathroom counter. He didn’t want to think about it. He kept repeating the same thing over and over, “It’s over and done with time to move on.” But nothing was working, he closed his eyes he relived the memory of that horrible night.
*Flashback*
Severus watched as Voldemort left him there to die, as blood began to gush out of the slice on his neck. After twenty odd years of being a loyal follower and a double spy he was left to die from blood lose. Like a muggle in the World War. Voldemort didn’t even stay to watch, he just sliced him up sent his snake on him like he was nothing. Well fuck him; see if the Elders Wand worked for him now.
“Professor Snape,” Harry Potter called out, “Can you hear me?”
Slowly moving his head towards the voice two words came out of his mouth, “Take them” his normally smooth voice was now raspy and rough. He was crying out his memories for Harry. What else could he give the boy, he had nothing. “Take them” his voice was at a whisper.
Harry put his hand on his former Professor’s neck trying to stop the blood. Turning he looked up at Hermione. “Give me something, a flask anything.”
Digging into her magical purse Hermione pulled out a small test tube. “Harry we have to help him.” She said softly while handing over the test tube.
Harry carefully took Snape’s tears. His eyes full of sadness as he looked down at his ex-professor. Yes he hated him, and wanted to kill him. But no man should die like this, like some animal that had been hunted and not wanted. Left there to bleed out and die. Pushing his hand harder he took the test tube away and put the stopper in.
“Hermione are you crazy, we are talking about the man the killed Professor Dumbledore. We can’t just let him live.” Ron looked at Hermione with disgust.
“There had to have been a reason Ronald. I won’t someone just die because we don’t fully know what happened in the tower. Professor Snape had to have a reason to do it. And a powerful wizard like Dumbledore isn’t just going to let him cast it.” Hermione pulled out a vial and made her way towards the dying teacher. “Professor Snape you need to drink this, it’s a very powerful sleeping draft, and I “borrowed” it from your store so I know that it has not expired.”
Severus looked up at Hermione, his eyes slowly closing he nodded his agreement. “Harry keep pressure on his wound,” Hermione carefully poured the potion into his mouth. Rubbing his throat she slowly worked the potion down. “Professor you have to swallow” Severus struggled a bit, but he was able to get the last of it down.
“I am not going to stay here and watch you save a murderer Hermione.” Ron walked towards the door. “Harry you are coming with me aren’t you?” That was the last thing Severus heard before he fell into a deep deep sleep.
*End Flashback*
Severus looked up at his refection again, he never did find out how Ms. Granger saved his life. He wanted to ask her how she did it, but no one could find her. She had not been seen in the last year. Well not that he really tried looking for her; she just wasn’t where the two idiots were.
Walking into his room he opened his closet and pulled out his every day teaching robes. I had taken him a year of what muggles called “physical therapy” to get the muscles in his neck and left arm working again. Nagini’s venom ripped through his muscles like a hot knife through butter. It destroyed his ability to move his neck and his left arm. The healers told him he was lucky that it wasn’t permanent like it was when most people get bitten by that type of snake. Whatever Granger did it was her fast action that caused him to heal so well. His voice took the longest to heal; it was finally back to his normal smoothness. However, if he raised his voice it would become raspy quickly and need time to heal.
Throwing on his cloak he did a final check in the mirror. It was his first day back to Hogwarts. Making his way back to his old potion’s classroom. He never wanted to teach again, or at least not potions. Minerva drove a hard bargain getting him to accept the position. He remembered the conversation very well.
*Flashback*
“No” Severus replied, sitting with his arms crossed across from the Headmistress glaring at her for even asking. “I will continue to say to tell you no Minnie so stop asking me. I don’t wish to teach brats who only want to kill themselves or their peers.”
“Severus, I am offering you anything you want. I want you to also be my deputy Headmaster in case something comes up.” Minnie got up out of her chair and began to pace. “I’m only asking because you are the best, I don’t have time to wait for a new potion’s master to finish training.”
“I don’t want to teach, there is no way you will convince me to do it. Albus had a hell of a time convincing me the first time. What are you going to offer me to take the job?”
“What if I told you I could get you in touch with Ms Granger” Minnie sat back down with a smile.
“I’m listening.”
“I know where Ms. Granger is and what is she up to. If you take the position I will owl her to see if she can drop in for a visit” Minnie took a sip of her tea. “Two years Severus is all I need. Then I can get the newest potion’s master and if you want at that time you can take over Defense against the Dark Arts from Mr. Potter.”
Severus stood up, “I need time to think this through. I will either owl you my decline or floo with my requirements. Good Evening Minerva.
*End Flashback*
In the end Severus agreed. It took some time and arguing but not only would be receiving his tenor pay, but he also got a great signing bonus. Whatever Ms. Granger did it had better be worth his 2 year sentence as the potion’s Professor.
There were still three weeks before classes began, walking into the classroom Severus looked around with disgust. Slughorn not only fucked up his sylibi, but also his classroom and storage room. Severus shook his head, how could anyone not inventory their potion ingredients? You had to know what you had on hand at all times so you knew what potions you could make.
Taking off his cloak he looked around the room, while hanging his cloak up on the back of his chair he took in the damage Slughorn had done. Slughorn had moved the tables into a half circle. Severus shook his head again, this was dangerous not only could you not see everyone at the same time, but it made it easier for students to cheat. Plus it would take a lot more time to check on everyone’s work then it should.
Pulling out his wand he began to rearrange “his” classroom. Once the tables and chairs were back in their rightful places he began setting up charms to clean the cauldrons, the floors, and to dust everything. With a dicto quill and a bit of parchment he walked into his storage rooms and began to carefully take inventory of his ingredients.
After two hours of documenting every potion, cleaning out expired ingredients and potions he finally had a list of things that he need to either brew or collect from a trip to Hogsmeade. Stepping back into his classroom he crossed his arms as he observed the room. The tables were in straight lines, three students per table. Two columns of tables and each column were seven rows deep. The floors were clean of only god knows what potions and ingredients that had been spilled. Breaking a sigh of relief Severus sat down and began to re work his syllabi.
“Professor Snape?” A male voice pulled Severus out of the zone. “Professor Snape Professor McGonagall sent me to talk to you.”
Severus slowly looked up from his work, ‘Please don’t let it be who I think it is’ Severus thought to himself. He put his quill down and looked up at the young wizard. “Yes Mr. Longbottom?”
Neville was now Professor Sprout’s assistant. He only had two years left until Sprout could retire and Neville could teach on his own.
“Why Mr Longbottom would Minerva send you to me?” Severus smirked; he loved making Neville feel uneasy. It usually made Neville stutter and almost faint.
“Professor McGonagall believes that…that”
“Out with it already Mr. Longbottom I haven’t got all day to deal with your stupid mumbling.”
“Professor Sprout and I have a whole greenhouse dedicated to potion ingredients” Neville took a deep breath. “Most of them are ready to be harvested. Would you like to harvest them or would you like to do it and save you some time.”
Severus stood up; grabbing his cloak from his chair he quickly walked towards the classroom door. “Show me what you have and then I shall determine if your feeble mind is capable enough to harvest them.”
“Yes sir, it’s all in greenhouse eight. The only thing that is not ready yet is the Mandrakes. But I highly doubt you will be need a huge yield this term.” Neville walked past his colleague and headed out towards the Herbiology classroom and greenhouses. Suddenly Neville stopped. “Professor Snape it’s good to see you back to work and in good health. I don’t know how you survived, but I am thankful you did. You’re a hero, you deserve the title more than any of us.”
“I am no hero” Severus spat,” I did what I had to do to survive. My job as your so called “hero” is to protect Potter from dying before he could be given up as a sacrificial lamb. Do not label what I did as anything but saving my own ass.” Severus looked down at Neville. “It was stupid, joining the side of the Death Eaters was what I thought I wanted. Then when they threatened to kill someone I cared about I just ran for it. I was a coward. I would never do any of it again if given the chance. A hero I am not.”
Neville watched as his old professor stormed off, “I still think you’re a hero” he said to himself in a low whisper. “And that will never change.”
“Mr. Longbottom quit stalling and show me what has grown. I have important things that have to be done before the next classes of sadists arrive.”
An hour later Severus left greenhouse eight, he had harvested what he believed would be too difficult for Neville to do. Although when quizzed Neville did in fact know all the correct techniques and tools to harvest even the toughest of plants, Severus could not trust him to do it properly. Checking his pocket watch Severus was angered to find that it was already half past six and dinner was being served in the great hall. “Scourgify” with a wave of his hand he was clean and made his way into the Great Hall.
Sitting down in his usual place he peered down at the empty house tables. His mind began drifting back to his last year teaching.
“Severus” Minnie called,”Severus is everything alright? You look quite out of it, are you feeling well?”
“Yes Minnie my mind just wondered” Severus shook his head, “What did you want Minnie?”
“I was saying that I received an owl from Ms. Granger earlier today. She has agreed to come and sit with you” Minnie pulled the letter out of her pocket. Quickly she scanned both pages. Taking the second page from the letter she handed it over to Severus. “Here is all of her information and what she said about the request to made.” Minerva placed the first page back into her pocket.
Pocketing the letter he toward his attention towards his dinner. He had chosen roasted chicken breasts with rosemary and thyme potatoes. Looking up he saw the owls delivering their nightly mail. A large tawny owl made its way over to him it dropped a rather large and heavy envelope into his play. Wiping his face with his napkin he dug into his pocket for some crackers. “Here you go, now leave me so I may finish my dinner. Hagrid will give you something better.”
As if the owl understood him he flew off towards the half giant, who was currently feeding a group of owls some roasted chicken.
Severus slowly opened his letter. A smile broke out on his face.
“Severus good news I take it?” Minnie asked.
“The ministry and St Mungo’s have accepted my application for a surrogate. I go next week to do my part.” Severus made his way to the teacher entrance.
“Wait” Minnie looked confussed. “What kind of surrogate?”
“One just to carry a baby, my baby.”
