"Ron, I've just had a call," Hermione said as she hurried into the living room, bags crashing along beside her. "It's my mum; she had an accident and she's in hospital. I have to go!"
"What? Is she ok? Do you want me to go with you?"
"No, you'd better stay here and look after the kids. It's nothing serious, just a few broken bones. I told my dad I'd go stay with him for a few days, maybe a week, look after him while mum's in hospital and get everything ready for her coming home."
"A week? But I have work! What about the kids? I can't afford to take time off!"
"Ron, it's the summer holidays! They're never around. They're always out with friends. I'm sure you'll manage. And just in case, I'll ask your sister to pop in from time to time to make sure everything's ok."
"I don't need someone to check up on me. You're right, I'll be fine! Now go! And be sure to tell Jean to hurry up and get better... She needs to get back in the kitchen; her Sunday dinners are the highlight of my week!"
"Oh Ron," Hermione laughed. "You and your stomach. Ok, I'd better get going. I'll see you in a few days. I love you!"
"I love you too!"
With that, Hermione disapparated and was gone.
The next morning Ron awoke to the sound of pots and pans banging and bacon sizzling, which also happened to be the most amazing smell to wake up to.
"Mmm, Hermione's up early today," Ron said sleepily to himself.
He climbed out of bed, stretching and rubbing his eyes, before heading down to the kitchen. That smell really was delightful. He wondered what the occasion was; Hermione wasn't really known for her culinary skills, rarely cooking if not absolutely necessary.
When he entered the kitchen, he was shocked by what greeted him; the sunlight flooding through the open windows; the smell, which was even better in here, of breakfast and summer morning mingling together; the kids sitting at the table, laughing and joking, while shovelling food into their mouths; music playing on the radio; someone, who wasn't Hermione, dancing and singing along by the stove, with her back to the door. He couldn't help but smile. This was amazing! Was he dreaming? He had to be!
Suddenly he remembered the night before, "Ginny?"
"Oh, Ron!" Ginny, startled, spun around. What she saw was her brother standing in the doorway in nothing more than a pair of boxers. And what a sight it was. He was no longer her fat, older brother, who did nothing but stuff his face. He was toned! Was that a six pack she could see? And those arms... Thoughts of being wrapped in them suddenly flooded her mind.
"Uhm, Gin? Hello? Gin! Ginny!"
She suddenly realised that she'd zoned out.
"I was... I was just making breakfast," Ginny was clearly flustered, but hoped Ron wouldn't notice. "Hermione told me she had to go away and that you might need some help, so I thought I'd pop by and make the kids breakfast. I was just putting yours on now. If you want to go and have a shower, get ready, I'll have this ready when you're done."
"Oh, thanks, but there's no need. Really, I can handle things! Although I really should be getting ready for work, so I think I'll take you up on your offer."
He turned and started heading for the shower, then he stopped and looked back, "And by the way, nice dancing!" He was laughing as he said it. Ginny blushed.
Standing in the shower, Ron thought of the scene which had unfolded in front of him in the kitchen. It was exactly how he'd pictured his life when he was younger. Sure the wife he pictured had been Hermione, not his sister, but the thought still made him incredibly happy. He couldn't help but smile. Down stairs he'd wanted to walk up to the dancing figure, put his arms around her and kiss her neck. He loved Hermione, but in all the years they'd been married nothing like that had ever happened. He couldn't remember ever seeing Hermione dance, not even at their wedding. Come to think of it, when was the last time they kissed? For a long time now their lives had consisted of work and children. As far as their marriage was concerned, romance was dead. Up until now it hadn't mattered. They'd never been particularly romantic, so he couldn't miss what he'd never had. Seeing his sister dance though, it had stirred something inside of him. What if he was missing out? Didn't he owe it to himself to go after his dreams? This was crazy! Was he seriously considering leaving Hermione to go in search of some fantasy? He pushed the thought from his head; he had work to go to.
That night Ron was glad to get home. Usually he loved work. Today though had been a disaster. He had been useless. He made a mess of everything he did. More than once he dropped bottles filled with various potions, causing customers to break out in spots and rashes and start acting rather strange. This drew complaints from several customers and resulted in a conversation with his brother.
"Missing Hermione already?" George teased. "She's been gone half a day and you're already falling apart!"
"Something like that," Ron muttered.
"Look mate, you may as well go home. You're no use here!"
"But we're slammed! I can't leave!" Ron protested.
"We'll be fine! In fact, we'll be better off without you! If you stay much longer there might be no shop left by the end of the day!"
"Bugger off!"
In the end, he did leave. His brother was right; his head just wasn't in the game. However, tomorrow had to be different! Getting sent home from work once was bad. He refused to allow it to happen again. People would ask questions; you don't just fall apart when your other half is out of town for a few days.
For now, he had the house to himself. The kids were out and who knew when they'd be home. Perfect! He'd get out of these clothes, sit in front of the tv, have a few drinks and just forget about everything which had happened today. Or at least, that was the plan.
Stripped down to his boxers, he went to the fridge, got a beer (something Hermione had introduced him to) and went into the living room, where he slumped down on the couch and flicked onto one of the sports channels. He didn't really understand any of these muggle sports, but sport was sport and on days like today he needed it.
No sooner had he lay down than he heard the front door opening.
"Oh great, the kids are home! There goes that plan!" He thought to himself.
He was wrong though, it wasn't the kids. Instead, he was surprised to see Ginny walk into the living room.
"Hey! Hope you don't mind me dropping by," Ginny said sounding slightly nervous.
"Gin! What're you doing here? You know the kids aren't home yet, right?"
"Oh I know! It was actually you I came to see... George told me you were slightly off today. He was worried about you. Asked if I'd come by and see how you are."
"Well that was very kind of you Ginny, but really, there's no need! I'm fine! Just not used to Hermione being gone."
"I'm not sure I believe you, Ron! I've known you my whole life. I know when you're lying. But if you don't want to tell me, that's fine! You don't have to. At least let me try to cheer you up. Let's have a few drinks!"
"Fine by me! Go get yourself a drink from the fridge!"
For the next hour, the two drank, talked, laughed and even made an attempt to familiarise themselves with some of the rules of the sports on tv. It was useless though, in the end they were still none the wiser.
"Ok, I give up! This is ridiculous! It makes no sense!" Ginny said. "Can we turn this off now? Put some music on?"
"Sure, go ahead!"
By this point both were slightly tipsy. As Ginny turned the tv off and the music on, Ron lay slouched on the couch, eyes barely open, smile spread across his face.
"Dance for me!" Ron said as the music started.
"Only if you get up and dance too."
"I... I can't! I don't dance!"
"Oh, come on! Live a little!" Ginny said as she danced towards Ron. When she reached him, she bent down, grabbed his hands and pulled him to his feet. For a few seconds she forced him to dance, before twirling away to the other side of the room. Ron watched her go, then proceeded to follow. As he got closer to her he began to dance.
"There you go! I told you it wasn't so bad!" Ginny said, grinning.
As Ron continued to dance, he couldn't take his eyes off of his sister. The way she twirled, moved her arms through the air, swayed her hips, shook her ass. She was enchanting. When had she learned to dance like that? Watching her dance, everything that had happened today slipped out of his mind. He only had one thought.
Moving up behind her, he put his arms around her waist and put his face to her neck, where he inhaled deeply. Ginny turned around in his arms and put her own arms around his neck. They simply stood, swaying in each other's arms and gazing into each other's eyes. They were lost in the moment. Ron was filled with so much desire, so much passion. There was only one thing he wanted.
Leaning down, he placed his lips against Ginny's. After a brief second Ginny responded. They began to deepen the kiss; Ron's tongue seeking access to Ginny's mouth, which was quickly granted. Their tongues wrestled together. A moan escaped Ginny.
Just then they heard the door opening, bringing them back to reality. The kids were back. They sprung apart, both fixing themselves and trying to look inconspicuous.
"Well I... Go... Have to... Bye!" Ginny stammered, before disapparating on the spot.
Ron simply stood starring at the spot where Ginny had stood seconds earlier.
The kids walked into the living room, laughing and pushing each other.
"Is dinner ready? We're starving! We haven't ate all day!"
"I'll just go put it on now."
