“Hermione…”“Oh come on, we all knew you’d have to face this sooner or later, Harry. There is no point in hiding away, like people will forget what happened so long as you don’t let them see you. You may as well embrace it, because you can’t just pretend you’re still the-boy-who-lived.” Hermione t’sked, rolling her eyes but squeezing the hand of the individual beside her comfortingly. She knew this was hard for them all, but she had to be strong for her friend’s sake as no one else was being much help. She walked hand in hand with Harry through to Platform 9 3/4, noticing the looks they attracted but ignoring the prying eyes of those around them. If she pretended not to be bothered by it, Harry might be able to ignore it too.
“Hermione…” The voice beside her whined again, thick with worry, the bright green eyes of her friend flitting about nervously.
“You look fine… That’s why they’re all staring. They’re surprised, no one expected you to take this well, saviour of the wizarding world or not.” The brunette blew off, turning to eye her companion and smile warmly. Harry caught sight of their reflection as they headed towards the train, examining herself with a soft grimace. Soft, scruffy dark hair that hugged her jaw line, big, long lashed eyes…
Curves. Harry Potter made a good girl… Even she admitted it. Not that this was what she wanted, or what she would have chosen had she had the choice.
A few months after the war, Harry had been attacked when out with the Weasleys.
The attacker had either been somewhat magically incapable, or owned a damaged wand, as the spell had gone wrong… Instead of killing the then male Harry Potter, it had turned him into a girl.
Harry had been to every healer possible about the matter, but it was a curse, and not something they could heal. There wasn’t a spell that could actually change someone’s gender permanently, so they knew of no way to change her back. Her changing had been a mistake, and one she was seemingly stuck with.
“I feel exposed in these clothes… Did you and Ginny have to dress me so…?” Harry trailed off, trying to find a word to describe how she looked.
“…girly?” Ginny asked with an amused grin from her other side. Harry scrunched her nose up at the choice of word but nodded, smoothing the pale blue plaid skirt she was wearing and eyeing the stark white vest that went with it. She looked so… Feminine.
“Because, Harry my dear, you are female.” She chuckled, unable to hide the flash of pain in her eyes. Things had grown complicated with Harry’s change. She’d been dating Ginny before it had happened. But now…
Well, Ginny was straight. They’d tried and they’d tried, but at the end of the day the female Weasley had been unable to get over her considerably… Squishier, girlfriend. No one could just change their sexuality as and when they felt like it, so Ginny no longer found Harry sexually attractive. Whilst they were still close, they couldn’t be in a relationship. Ginny couldn’t get around the gender issue, and frankly, they’d found Harry to be undecided on her sexuality. Now she was female, the raven haired girl found herself feeling pretty conflicted. She’d grown up thinking she liked girls, but now she was a girl she found she couldn’t appreciate them like she used to do. It left her wondering if she had always been a little bisexual.
And yet she wasn’t sure she could be with a bloke either. It was complicated, to say the least.
“I know, but no one would care if I still dressed like a guy… I don’t like this, I feel exposed. People will care now. I’m being ogled at.” Harry whinged, pouting a little. To her dismay she had noticed herself doing this more and more, instead of just scowling the way she had before.
“People are just surprised. Yes, they all read it in the paper, but none of them expected to see it. I imagine they assumed you’d go straight for a job at the ministry, and not return for eighth year…” Hermione explained, helping Harry tug her luggage onto the train. Ron too was coming back for another year, but only because Hermione had insisted. He had already charged off ahead to catch up with Seamus, after spotting the Irishman across the platform.
“Well, I don’t really feel very… Comfortable in this body right now. I need time to adjust, and I may as well earn some real grades in that time. Maybe I’ll decide against becoming an Auror, my female body might be a bit of an inconvenience. I’m a bit too… Plump for such an athletic career.” The dark haired girl huffed, prodding a boob in demonstration. She honestly couldn’t understand why some guys found boobs so attractive, she’d never realised until now that they were a real inconvenience. She preferred being flat chested.
“You’re not plump Harry, you’ve just got more curves then you’re used to.” Ginny snorted, sitting down when they walked into an empty compartment. “You couldn’t be chubby even if you tried…” She added, thinking back to how thin Harry had been as a guy.
“It hurts when I run now…” Harry complained, scowling over at the red head.
“That’s called having boobs.” The ginger chortled, grinning a little and watching Hermione slide the door shut behind them. People kept purposefully walking past to examine their saviour’s new body, which was irritating Hermione to no end. She pulled the blinds down swiftly, before falling down into the seat closest to the door. Harry didn’t doubt that Hermione had done this so that she could deter anyone who tried to come in uninvited.
Harry grimaced at how bluntly Ginny put it and looked away sharply, trying her best to ignore the interest of the other students. “How do you put up with them? They’re a bit of an inconvenience.” She asked as she stared out the window, begging for the train to depart. Molly had needed to rush off to the Ministry, still in the middle of making arrangements for Harry to stay with her, so was not waving them off. She had offered them all fierce hugs and told the others they had to look after Harry, to make sure she didn’t get into any more trouble. She needed a normal school year, after everything. Though Harry wasn’t sure herself that a year of being female would make for a normal school year.
“You’ll get used to them, it’s just because you’re not used to the added weight on your chest. You hunch because of it, you need to make sure you consciously sit straight or you’ll damage your posture.” The brown haired Gryffindor sighed, putting one hand on Harry’s shoulder now that she had taken a seat beside her and trying to get her to sit up straighter. “I know they’re heavy, but you’ll adjust.” She added at Harry’s sceptical look. Ginny rolled her eyes when the train began to move, noticing Harry’s happier exhale at the steady rocking of the train.
“This year should be interesting…” Harry mumbled softly, more to herself than anyone else. Hermione nodded at the comment, sighing a little. They’d been hoping for an easy year… But that didn’t seem likely.
All three girls raised their heads when the compartment door slid open, Ron, Seamus, Dean and Neville standing awkwardly in the hall. “It’s rude to stare boys, either come in and sit down or bugger off.” Ginny snapped, tired of the way everyone just seemed to be uncomfortable with Harry now. Even Hermione, although she hid it very well. Hermione was trying her hardest of them all. The only reason she was taking it better then Ginny was because she wasn’t the one who’d been in a relationship with ‘her’.
The boys mumbled apologies and moved into the compartment, sitting down wherever they could.
“…this is so weird. So you’re actually a girl now? Like, a real girl…?” Seamus queried in his thick accent after a fair few minutes of tense silence.
“SEAMUS!” Hermione and Ginny snapped in unison, looking more than a little offended by his prying. Harry smiled to herself, turning to look at the Irish Gryffindor.
“It’s fine. Yes, I am… Lady-parts and all.” She snorted, rather unbecomingly, grinning a little when Ron grimaced and looked away, his ears red. Neville looked a little green, disturbed by her choice of words.
“Was that necessary?” He asked, swallowing hard. Harry laughed, grinning now.
“He asked, I’m just being honest… Why, does it make you uncomfortable?” She giggled, enjoying the boy’s reactions. Dean just rolled his eyes and shook his head in amusement, as Seamus cracked up. The sandy haired boy smacked Harry hard on the back, grinning back like a maniac.
“I’m going to miss having you in our rooms, you always were a good laugh…” He chortled, wiping a tear of amusement from his eye, appearing deeply tickled by the comment.
“Yeah, it’s going to be weird… I’ll be staying with Hermione though, so I should be alright… Fewer laughs though I’d imagine.” Harry laughed softly, laughing harder when she had to dodge a playful smack from Hermione. Things seemed much less awkward, even Neville was smiling now.
They were her best friends, they seemed to accept how she was now without much fuss. It was all a bit strange, but with the help of friends it shouldn’t be too difficult. “I can’t believe some nutter made you into a girl. Only you could have that sort of bad luck!” Neville chuckled dryly, grinning. “Then again, my luck isn’t much better. I might be next!” He joked half-heartedly.
They all laughed a bit at that, knowing Neville had always had the worst luck of them all. They chatted amicably for a while, until Hermione stood and tugged Harry to her feet, Ginny rising beside them.
“What…?” Harry asked, confused as to why she was being moved.
“We have to get changed Harry… You can’t exactly change with the guys anymore.” Ginny explained with a tinkling laugh, pulling her uniform from her suitcase.
“Oh… Yeah, right.” The raven haired girl allowed, sighing and going to grab her own clothes. Hermione already had her own hung over her arm.
“We’ll be back in a bit.” Hermione promised the boys before leaving with Harry and Ginny in tow.
“…it’s going to be weird, isn’t it?” Ron sighed after the girls had gone, turning to look at the others. Neville nodded, running a hand through his dark hair.
“The weirdest.” He confirmed, frowning when Seamus objected.
“I don’t know, Harry still acts like Harry… He- sorry- She, is kinda hot too.” The Irishman pointed out, laughing at Ron’s obvious sound of disgust.
“Don’t even go there, Seamus, that’s disgusting!” The ginger protested loudly, looking appalled, and a little too pink-cheeked.
“Oh come on, I’m only telling the truth! You obviously think so too, you’re blushing!” Seamus pointed out in response, refusing to be ashamed of his admission. He wasn’t wrong, Harry made one fine specimen of a woman!
“He’s – she’s one of our closest friends, it’s a little gross mate.” Dean admitted, wrinkling his nose and folding his arms.
“Fine, fine, I was just saying. It’s not like I’m going to try shag him- her! Darn, that’s going to take a while to get used to…” The blonde mused, rubbing his temple wearily. Ron was seething, but speechless. Neville cast a worried glance at him, grimacing a little.
“Why’s Ron so red-faced? Did someone insult that crap Quidditch team he’s so fond of?” Ginny teased as the girls walked back in, all dressed in their uniforms. Hermione had made Harry wear the same grey skirt as her, trying to get the somewhat coy girl to embrace her new femininity.
All the guys fell silent at that question, none of them wanting to admit the topic of conversation. Ginny frowned at their sudden silence, glancing between them all. “Okay… You guys best go get changed, as you didn’t utilise the time you had when we were gone.” She mumbled, regarding the four of them suspiciously.
The boys all nodded, retrieving their uniforms and leaving. Hermione raised an eyebrow, looking over to Ginny. “What do you think that was about?” The brunette asked, genuinely confused.
“Merlin knows…” Ginny sighed, flopping back down into her seat and adjusting her tie to make it a little less tight. “Boys!” She exclaimed in exasperation, though she could guess exactly what the boys had been discussing.
“…do you think they were talking about me?” Harry asked honestly, sitting and glancing between the two girls with worry in her eyes.
“No of course not-” Hermione insisted, scowling when Ginny disagreed over her.
“Yes.” The ginger hummed bluntly, shrugging. Hermione had been attempting to sugar coat it, but Ginny wasn’t going to lie about it. She thought they were talking about Harry.
“I can’t really blame them, this is all a bit… New. Although I expected more of Ron, he’s had months to adjust…” The green eyed girl grumbled, folding her arms and blowing her messy fringe from her face irritably. Ginny shrugged non-committedly, watching Hermione sit opposite them.
“It’s still quite new for him too to be fair. He’s known you all this time, and now you’re suddenly someone different.” Hermione tried to explain, frowning and scratching her head.
“But I’m not someone different, I’m me…” Harry insisted, burying her head in her hands and huffing in annoyance.
“That’s not how he sees it, and probably not how a lot of people will. You just have to prove them wrong, or learn to accept things as they are…” The ginger next to her admitted, knowing Hermione was right, despite how much she didn’t want her to be. That was how Ginny herself felt…
“Right… Well, we’ll just have to see how things go…” Harry accepted quietly, watching as the train slowly pulled into Hogsmeade station.
It was quite dark now, and she could see the town illuminated, the only clue that they were close. They’d be off the train soon, and on their way to school… Where there would be no more hiding.

Harry felt every single eye on her as she walked to her house table. The walk seemed a thousand times longer than usual because of the stares that followed… Even the teachers were watching her.
Hagrid frowned at the sight of his favourite student, concerned for her. From Harry’s letters he could tell the girl was quite unhappy with the change… He just hoped she found a cure, or at least adjusted to her new gender. Harry deserved some kind of happiness after all she had been through.
Seeing the then male Harry killed before his eyes had made him care a great deal more for the welfare of the teenager. It had broken his heart to witness the student’s demise, so he was delighted when Harry turned out to be alive. It was a crying shame she hadn’t had the chance to live properly before being attacked again, and having her life turned on it’s head.
Minerva watched the brave Gryffindor take her seat, before glancing to the door to see if that was the last of the students. Discovering it was, she waved the first years and a gaggle of second years forward with Professor Sprout. Due to Muggle-Borns not being allowed into the school the year before, many first years from the year before had never had an education. So, McGonnagal had invited them back, meaning they were second year students due to their age but would be offered extra classes. Students in the years above who had been denied an education due to their blood status had also been invited back, and were being offered extra tutoring to make up for the lost time. A lot of students hadn’t returned.
Ginny and Hermione sat on either side of Harry, watching the large mass of new students approaching the repaired sorting hat. The sentient artefact looked somewhat charred, but otherwise fine. As it began to sing in a loud, clear voice, it was obvious it had recovered from being set alight. It sang a song of unity and peace, as expected due to the end of the war, but mentioned a stronger unity being formed between Slytherin and Gryffindor… Mentioning students becoming closer than their founders Godric and Salazar, who had been friends once upon a time.
Hermione frowned at that, trying to figure out the song in her head as the new students were sorted. Harry took little notice, never really taking the sorting hat seriously. She respected the hat, but a hat was a hat. How it could prophesise? Whether or not it just guessed was a mystery to her, even if it had been right once or twice.
Her eyes glazed over her friends as a soft exhale escaped her parted lips, and she noticed most of their year staring at her rather than watching the sorting. She sighed unhappily at that, glancing around the room and pausing when her eyes met those of Draco Malfoy. The blonde Slytherin was watching her with interest, paying no attention to the very few Slytherin eighth years that had returned. Only five or six Slytherins had returned, most of them having had their families torn apart or hunted after the war.
The eighth year Slytherins Harry recognised were Pansy Parkinson, Blaise Zabini, Draco Malfoy, Theodore Nott and a girl she was sure was called Daphne, or something along those lines… He was surprised Nott had returned, remembering seeing in the paper that his father had been disposed of, with all the known deatheaters… Excluding the Malfoys. But the Malfoys were a special case.
Food appeared on the table suddenly, taking the raven haired girl by surprise and drawing her eyes away from the small group of Slytherins in her year group. She stared hard at the food before her, too deep in thought to think much about eating. She’d had lunch on the train, and a big breakfast (courtesy of Mrs Weasley before she’d left for the Ministry), so wasn’t particularly hungry. More unsettled than anything else.
“Harry…?” Seamus repeated, eyebrow raised as he regarded the green eyed girl opposite him. Harry’s head snapped up to look at the Irish student, her eyes confused.
“Yeah?” She queried, scratching her head thoughtfully.
Seamus laughed and she frowned, puzzled by his reaction. “I was trying to talk to you…” He chuckled, rolling his eyes.
“Oh~! Sorry, was in a world of my own…” Harry blew off lightly, brushing a lock of hair from her face and fixing her green eyes on the blue ones of the boy opposite her. “What’s up?” She asked, casting an eye over the food on the table once more to decide definitively if she wanted dinner or not. She decided against having a main meal, but decided a piece of treacle tart or two wouldn’t hurt.
“I was just asking who you think the DADA teacher will be. There are several new staff members up there, and we were saying we have no idea who any of them are.” The sandy blonde boy mused, gesturing to the four new teachers.
“Well… There should be a new DADA, a new Muggle Studies, maybe a new History of Magic… I heard Binns retired after the war, he was probably sick of all the chaos. That might be rumour though, I don’t know… Will McGonnagal still be teaching Transfiguration? If she isn’t, that could be the fourth…” Harry supplied, chewing her bottom lip and eyeing the new additions to the head table.
“Head teachers don’t usually actually teach, do they…? Dumbledore didn’t.” Hermione agreed, cutting into a chicken breast as she glanced over at them. “And I’ve been owling McGonnagal in the holidays about the changes to the school. She was very helpful, told me that Binns had indeed left. He’s still in the castle, as this is where he died, but he no longer wishes to teach. He doesn’t think students listen to him.”
“He’s not wrong.” Ron snorted from where he was sat opposite her, making Seamus grin.
“Good riddance, his lessons were as dull as dish water!” The Irish Gryffindor chuckled, earning a scowl from Hermione.
“I didn’t mind them… The lessons weren’t boring, he was.” Hermione defended, laughing when Ginny mockingly gasped at Hermione insulting a teacher.
“For SHAME Hermione! He was a teacher, should he not be respected?” The ginger girl joked, grinning widely.
“We’d all respect him if he actually paid enough attention to 1. Realise he was dead, and 2. Realise he has the most monotonous voice in the history of magic.” Harry pointed out, laughing as the boy’s broke out into hysterics, Ron and Seamus guffawing as Neville even managed a chuckle. The rest of dinner proceeded with them questioning how Binns had not noticed his death, and laughing as they thought up scenarios of how he discovered the fact. Had someone had to tell him? Because that was a humorous idea. Professor… I don’t know if you’ve realised, and I hope I’m not talking out of turn, but do you know that you’re dead?
It was absurd.
Hermione frowned a little at their mocking, but Harry couldn’t care less as she helped herself to her second slice of treacle tart.
Author's Note: I greatly enjoyed writing this story.
