Summary: After setting Sirius free, Hermione stuns both him and Harry by insisting that Sirius take Harry with him when he escapes. Seeing manipulations and that things just aren't right, she doesn't know what's going on, but figures it isn't good.
At 24, Harry returns with Sirius and plenty want them drawn into the war. The two that come back, though, aren't the same as the ones that left, making the war complete chaos and leaving plenty stinging.

Chapter 1
Now I begged you, baby, help me
But you turned your back on me
You didn't even listen
When you should have set me free
Now I'm leaving with the devil
Going to leave this search for love
I'm leaving with the devil
Leave this house of broken love, broken love
House of Broken Love
-Great White
Standing there watching Sirius about mount Buckbeak in preparation for leaving, Harry had mixed emotions. He was glad that his obviously innocent godfather was about to get away after being in danger of getting Kissed twice that night. On the other hand, though, he was sad to have someone that obviously cared about him leaving his life once more. Oh, he knew it wouldn't be a permanent thing as Sirius swore he would write, but it wasn't the same as having him by his side. With the options that were here, it was best he go. Harry got that. However, before he could get too down about the matter, Hermione interrupted his thoughts and stopped Sirius.
“You need to take Harry with you,” Hermione told Sirius, using that tone she employed with Harry and Ron when they needed to listen to her.Petting the hippogriff, Sirius told her softly, eyes drifting to the startled Harry, “It's best I don't, Hermione. Plenty, both Magical and Muggle, are going to look for me after this.”“He'll be safer with you, Sirius,” Hermione told him, a determined bent to her voice. Shaking her head, she pressed on before Sirius could argue, ignoring Harry's sputterings, “Something is really wrong.”Though he knew time was of the essence, even with them being in a safe place at the top of the castle, Sirius asked, “What makes you say that? He's plenty safe here. Everyone takes good care of him.”“No they don't!” Hermione said, huffing, folding her arms over her chest. “You don't understand all that's gone on, Sirius.” Looking around, knowing she had only a limited time for them to get back, she said, “I'll turn the Time-Turner back if I have to again to have the time to explain this. It's just—you have to take him. There is something really wrong with this whole mess.”Glancing at his stunned godson, who appeared as blindsided as he was, Sirius gave a slow nod. “Just so you two don't risk getting caught, I'll listen. What's going on?” He asked, not sure what she meant, but wanting to hear what she had to say.“Don't you think it's odd that Professor Dumbledore sent the two of us to rescue you instead of doing it himself or one of the other teachers he trusted? Harry didn't know how to perform the Patronus before he did it at the lake, Sirius. He was getting there with the spell, but he couldn't. If he hadn't managed, you would both have ended up Kissed. We won't go into how risky it was. Professor Lupin could have easily gone after the two of us as he passed right by where we were. If it wasn't for Buckbeak, he would have. Then what would have happened? We won't talk about anything else that happened tonight. If he wanted to do something to save the both of you, he could have done it far easier without the danger we were in.”Brow furrowed as he looked at the witch, Sirius then glanced at Harry, who was looking confused as well. That made sense to him. At least on the surface. Before Sirius could say anything, Hermione pressed on, “This is just the last in a long line of plenty that makes no sense, Sirius! If Harry was in so much danger from you, why didn't anyone tell him? He went out of that house all the time when at home. You could have easily done something to him. No one said a word and we didn't mention it to him because we didn't know either. The night he left, you could have easily taken him. No one did anything!”“That is true,” Sirius said, nodding slowly, thinking it over as it made sense.“That's just this year, Sirius,” Hermione sighed. Shaking her head, she told him, “That whole bit the first year. I do understand that all of us are curious about mysteries at that age, but there is no way we should have gotten through that maze the teachers set up if it was that good and they expected to keep Quirrell out. If that stone was so important, they would have done something far more difficult. We got through, easily. It just took some thinking, nothing more. Harry ended up facing that maniac on his own. Professor Dumbledore had to have a clue about what was going on with Quirrell. After all, Professor Snape did! You don't think he said something?”A glance at Harry saw his godson looking at Hermione, brow furrowed. Shaking his head, he looked back at the witch, wondering what else she had to say.Standing there, Harry wasn't sure what to think. He supposed that he had been so caught up in what went on that he didn't think about everything the way Hermione had. Well, Hermione was the kind to think about whatever a different way anyway. And the more she talked, the more he wondered if she wasn't right.Running through the mess with the basilisk then into this year, Hermione told him, fingers now twisting the hem of her shirt, knuckles white, “There is something really wrong with this mess, Sirius. School is bad enough, but we all know how bad Harry's family is. You can't tell me someone couldn't have done something about them!”“Harry wasn't supposed to go to them in the first place,” Sirius said, looking between the two, not liking the conclusions he was drawing about what she said. “If I couldn't take him, he was to go to Remus. I assumed that he couldn't because of whatever, him being a werewolf being the top of that list. It was my assumption that he was at least in your life, Harry.”“I hadn't heard of him before this year,” Harry told his godfather, not liking this situation at all. Like Hermione said; there was something really wrong. He hadn't noticed it before, but the more she talked, the more he didn't like it.Checking the time, Hermione looped the necklace around all three of them and the hippogriff before she turned the Time-Turner back a bit more then huffed. “Something is wrong,” she reiterated. “He needs to go with you, Sirius. I don't know what's going on, but I don't think it has anything to do with people having his best interests at heart!” Lowering her voice, she said, tone quivering, “I think he's in real danger from whatever is really going on.”Running a hand through his hair, Sirius stared at her then looked at Harry. His godson was looking at the witch, a stunned look on his face, one that had the appearance of a dawning comprehension on it. That was enough to tell him that she was probably right and Harry was putting it together the same way she laid it out, maybe more than she did because he probably knew information she didn't. Blowing out a breath, he said, nodding, “You're right. Something is really wrong. Let me think.” Leaning his head back, he shut his eyes and tried to come up with something.Looking at Hermione, Harry asked, tone slightly stunned, “When did you figure all of this out?” He didn't have a clue. Of course, he knew she was smart, but she hadn't said anything up until now. If it was that big, she would have.“I've been thinking something was really wrong for a while now, I just didn't put it all together until tonight. While we were waiting for it all to play out, it hit. I don't have real proof, Harry, but it fits.” She told him quietly with a sigh, looking down and shaking her head.Thinking he had the most rudimentary of plans in place, Sirius looked between the two then said, “I think I have something. Part of it is going to depend on the acting job the two of you can pull off.” Looking at Hermione, he added, gently, “And how well you can hold up under questioning.”“No one will get anything out of me,” Hermione told him, a determined bent to her voice. “Don't worry about that. Just don't give me any more details than you have to.”“You may have to keep this a secret for years,” Sirius told her gently.“As long as it keeps Harry safe, I will,” she told him, lifting her chin, a firm look on her face.“You need to for this to work. And don't lock eyes with anyone when being questioned. You can glance at them, but don't let them lock eyes with you,” Sirius told her. Seeing her nod, he said, “I want you to go back tonight. Act like you normally would and let Albus know I got away. Fudge is going to have fits, but that'll be expected from everyone. Tomorrow I'm going to send Harry something to get him out. I won't tell you what.” Seeing her nod, he then looked at his godson, “I need you to get that map back from Remus and give it to Hermione. Your dad and I helped to make it, but she's going to need it to prove you're gone.”“Sure, Sirius,” Harry nodded. Already, his heart was hammering in his chest, but not in a bad way. It sounded like he was getting out and going with someone that really did love him. That he hadn't ever had, at least that he could remember.Pleased with that, Sirius nodded. “I need you to act normal, both of you, all day tomorrow. Harry, you'll get the instructions you need with what I send to you tomorrow. I'll send it an odd way, but you'll find it when you wake up. Keep it on you. In the morning, I need you to send your owl off. She'll be able to find me, I'm sure. Then put the things that really mean something to you in your pockets. Shrink them if you have to. You're going to leave almost everything, including your trunk, behind. I'll get you everything you need, I swear. Just don't take too much.” Softly, he added, “Leave your broom. I'll get you another one. It would be a huge bright and shining sign if that is gone.”As there were only two things in the world that mattered to him, aside from his wand, that was easy. And they were something he could get into his pocket with a shrinking charm. “I will,” Harry told him, heart hammering faster. It really, truly sounded like he was going away with Sirius. That felt wonderful and he was excited.Looking at Hermione, he said, seeing tears in her eyes, “He won't be able to write you, I'm sorry. Just keep in mind you did the right thing and he'll be safe with me. I just need you to stick close to him all day. We need you to confirm he just vanishes. You'll understand that more tomorrow. Harry will tell you a little, but not much. Just follow his lead.”Though she knew that she was doing the right thing, it still hurt knowing one of her first true friends was leaving. She would deal, though. To keep Harry safe and get him away from what was really going on, she had to. That meant staying on her toes. It was something she could and would do.“You did the right thing,” Sirius told Hermione gently. “I agree; something is wrong. Whatever it is will come out after we vanish. It might take time, but it will. You're being a friend doing that.”Feeling better about her choice, Hermione nodded. “Thanks,” she said, quietly.Straightening up, Sirius said, “I have to go. There is plenty I have to attend to now to make this work. You both go back and do what you have to. Make it look good.” Glancing at the witch, he said, “And prepare for the questioning. It'll be intense. Just keep in mind why you're doing this and you'll be fine.” Seeing her nod, Sirius mounted Buckbeak then nodded to the two. “Check your bed when you wake up, Harry.” Seeing the two nod at him, he took off. There was much to do and very little time to take care of it. They had to get to the heart of the Ashdown Forest before daybreak. As that was a long ways off, they had to hurry.Watching Sirius go until he couldn't see him anymore, Harry said, “We need to get back. While we are, you need to explain how you put this together.”“I will,” Hermione told him, heading off the way they needed to go, motioning him to follow. As they hurried along, she explained the best she could. Though it was the right thing to do, something she knew for sure, it still hurt. Harry would be safe, though. That's all that mattered. She just had to focus on what was to come so she could prepare. It was an almost certainty that once everyone realized that Harry was gone tomorrow that she would have plenty to deal with. That was where she needed to focus so that she could hold up against almost everything, especially Professor Dumbledore. The rest? She would worry about that later.
Coming down from the owlery after sending Hedwig off, Harry met Hermione just before the doors to the Great Hall. Giving her a smile, his heart was already pounding in his chest. He had woken up in the Infirmary with a Portkey sent by Sirius in his hand, concealed under the covers. Along with it were instructions on what to do with it and how to go about getting out. That made it more 'real' to him and told him he was leaving. It was a hard choice, one he was still thinking about of course, but he was determined to go through with it.
All night he had thought over what Hermione said, playing the events out in his head. It made sense, really it did. There were also bits that she didn't know about that clicked into place as well. That shored up the choice that this was for the best. So, he would go with it. It was just hard, was all. Hogwarts was the closest thing he knew to home. Ron and Hermione were more than friends, they were family, the only one he had ever known. It was something he would do, though.Looking at Harry, feeling her eyes burn, Hermione tried to act normal, walking in with him and talking. She would get filled in the best she could when they left. Well, she didn't want to know too much so it couldn't slip out, but she wanted to know the basics.Taking a seat and piling food on his plate, though he was sure he wouldn't eat much as his stomach was tied in knots, Harry asked, “Ron still in the Infirmary?”“Yes. Madam Pomfrey will let him out later today,” Hermione told him, having made sure to check that this morning so they could deal accordingly.Nodding, happy with that as it would be easier to work with, Harry said, “After breakfast we'll go see Professor Lupin.” A glance up at the teacher's table had him noticing the man wasn't there. He needed that map as he now knew what Sirius meant the night before. That meant they had to get it back.Trying to keep herself under control, Hermione said, ignoring those around them and the questions they were tossing, “I'll go with you.” She wanted to spend all the time in the world she could with Harry before he vanished. She wasn't sure how he was going to do that, but it was best she was along for various reasons. Besides, she would miss her friend, a lot. It hurt to know he was leaving her, but it was for the best. That she kept reminding herself.“After we finish there, I say we go take a walk outside. It's a beautiful day. That and we can go see Hagrid,” Harry told her, already planning out what he needed to do. This would be perfect. And, if they timed it right, there would be plenty of witnesses that he was around right before he vanished.Pushing her food away as she couldn't stomach eating, Hermione sipped at her juice, trying to act normal. All those around them kept chatting away about the events going on. She ignored it for the most part, other than to answer direct questions. All she knew was that she was nervous in a way she hadn't been in a long time. That and sad. She would deal with it accordingly though and act normal. Harry needed her to do that for all this to work. Mind focusing on what she had to do and why this was for the best, she pressed on.
Holed up in a small area outside, in a place well concealed, Harry pulled out the map and showed Hermione how to work it after she put up a Notice-Me-Not and muffling charm. Once he had it explained, he handed it over to her. “You're probably going to have to pull this out to help prove I'm gone. Just tell them I had you hold onto it for some reason. You'll come up with a viable excuse for having it.”
Pocketing it with hands that shook slightly, Hermione gave a nod then let out a ragged breath. “How are you going to do this? And when?”“I'm just going to vanish,” Harry told her with a smile. “In a few years, you'll probably figure out how I managed to do it. We're going to take a walk down by the lake on the way to Hagrid's. While doing that, I'm going to say goodbye and then vanish. As there are a couple teachers out here, we'll pass by them so they see me. You need to keep right on going after I say goodbye, talking to me so nothing looks off. When you judge the time is right, you start looking for me. I'm sure you'll know what to do.”Eyes burning again, Hermione nodded, wringing her hands as she looked at Harry. “You'll be safe, won't you? I mean, getting away? It's nothing dangerous?”“Nothing dangerous,” Harry assured her with a shake of his head. “He made sure of it. I'll be fine. I'm supposed to tell you that we'll be in a safe place until we get out of the country. It's somewhere no one knows about, but him. From what he said, no one can get in or even see it. We'll be fine. All he said to tell you is to trust him.”“Just so you're safe,” Hermione breathed, planning to look some of this up when she could so she could understand more. She didn't think it would help her find where Harry was, something she didn't want to know anyway, but she was curious. That would be expected from her anyway.Stepping forward, Harry pulled her into a hug and gave her a squeeze. “I'll be fine.” He assured her. Lowering his voice, he added, “And thank you. From both of us.”Hugging Harry tightly, Hermione hitched out, “You're welcome. Make sure you stay safe.”“With him, I can bet I'm safer than anywhere else in the world,” Harry assured her, a lump in his throat as he did. He wanted this, more than anything in the world, but leaving was hard. He would, though, as it was for the best.Sniffling slightly, Hermione broke off the hug then swiped at her eyes, making sure the tears didn't fall. She didn't want anyone suspecting anything. If she started crying, they would. No, she would keep it under control until it was time when a show of emotions was warranted. It was then she would have a breakdown. Until then, she had to act normal. For Harry's sake. This was for him, something he needed to keep him safe. After being sure she had herself under control, she looked at her friend and gave the best smile she could. “Let's go see Hagrid,” she told him, trying to sound normal.“Yeah, we can do that. I'm sure he has plenty to say after last night,” Harry told her, that lump in his own throat growing.Canceling the spells, Hermione then began to walk down towards the lake. Like Harry said, it was a beautiful day, so this would be normal for them. There were only a few more days of school left, so they all took advantage of them to enjoy the grounds. “Ron will be happy. He's supposed to be out before supper. You know him and his food. He gets the same meals in the Infirmary, but swears it's different. So, he'll eat more than normal.”Walking beside Hermione, Harry laughed, “True! You can't convince him otherwise. It just means that everyone at the table needs to stay out of his way as he eats, as he'll swear he's starving.” Ron was someone he wanted to say goodbye to as well. After all, he was the first real friend he ever had. Not to mention all they had done together and how his family had basically taken him in, treating him like one of their own. He couldn't, though. Hermione might manage to keep what she knew to herself, but Ron wouldn't be able to. Especially when it came to his mother. Maybe in the years to come he would get to talk to him again. He hoped so anyway. Oh, he was sure that Ron would be mad, but he would get over it.
Down by the lake, after passing Professor Sprout who was talking to a few students, and Madam Hooch, who looked like she was heading to the pitch, Hermione was talking about vacation plans with her parents. Though nervous, knowing what was coming soon, she acted as normal as she could. As they passed by a group of first years that were talking as they headed to where the Giant Squid was sunning itself, she faltered in her step when she heard Harry's voice.
Putting his hand in his pocket after checking the other one to make sure his Invisibility Cloak and photo album were in it, then glancing around to make sure no one was looking, Harry said, quietly, “Goodbye, Hermione. And thank you. For everything.” Then he activated the Portkey and was gone.Shutting her eyes, willing herself to keep going, Hermione whispered, though sure he was gone, “Goodbye, Harry. Take care of yourself.” Then, with a heavy heart, feeling her eyes burn again, though blinking the feeling away, she kept right on going, talking about summer homework and what she planned to do about what they had been assigned. Focusing ahead of her, she looked for Hagrid's cabin, trying to judge how far she should go before 'noticing' Harry was gone. With that, she silently hoped that she had just given her friend a new life he would adore and that he was safe. After all, Harry deserved that.
