Chapter II: Keeping Abilities Under Wraps--Ways to not let on that you're in the know
With most creature inheritances comes a certain amount of mental and/or magical enhancement. Some, like heightened senses, the ability to see magic, and even ready-made, impenetrable occlumency shields, can be hidden with little to no effort.
Others are not so easily concealed.
Elemental affinity can only be controlled, and to do so one must be able to calm their emotions, usually using Occlumency or a similar method to avoid unpleasant meteorological mishaps.
Shadow-walking, wingless flight (levitation), enhancements to speed, strength or agility, and shape-shifting are some of the easier abilities to hide: Just never use them around those you cannot trust implicitly.
Empathic ability is wonderful to have if you plan on pursuing a career in public service or politics, but can be a hassle to deal with in day-to-day life. Usually, creatures that are empathic will have some form of mate or companion they will bond with to help hold their mental shields. (These kinds of bonds are usually very personal, close bonds, and are not to be used lightly, as they will permanently link two minds to one another. This is the reason that experimentation into creation of synthetic creature bonds is strictly prohibited by every Ministry of Magic worldwide.)
Chapter III: Hiding the telltale signs--Solutions to every visible change
Hiding those fangs and slitted pupils not as easy as you thought? Having trouble keeping your wings in your robes?
Not a problem anymore!
We're here to tell (and show) you how it's done!
Fangs: Fangs are not impossible to hide, though it does take some practice and will probably involve a few slip-ups, so be prepared to let a few people know about them so they can spot you before you try to talk in public. Practice talking without letting your fangs show in front of a mirror for a few hours every day until you can hide them successfully, then try to hide them from friends. Once you've practiced with enough people to feel confident of your ability, take it public and find out if you're doing it right.
Slitted pupils: If you have newly-shaped pupils that you aren't particularly proud of, you can try just not making eye contact with others to conceal them, but when that isn't an option, glamour charms to make them appear normal are usually your best bet. However, they can also cause vision loss if used on the eyes too often, since the eyes are such a delicate body part, so sometimes glamour potions are a better bet.
Wings: Most winged species can retract their wings, but for those that cannot, disillusionment charms and potions are the best route.
Claws: Claws can be trimmed, but some species will regrow them when in danger, under stress, or angered, so this does not always work. Disillusionment charms will hide them unless they are discovered through touch.
Fur: Some potions can cause fur to fall out completely and supress regrowth for up to six months, but they can be costly. Disillusionment charms will work if the person seeing you does not touch you at all.
Tails: Tails can be hidden through disillusionment charms, just be very careful not to accidentally hit someone standing near or behind you with them, and you should be fine.
Discolored hair, eyes or skin: Having trouble with pigmentation? Try using those handy disillusionment charms or potions to fix your color. If you got darker instead of paler, you may need to use glamors instead.
Altered Features: Almost always, creature inheritance only serves to increase beauty, so these changes can just be laughed off as something you did because you wanted to look better. If that doesn't work out for you, using a glamor to look the way you did before is probably your best bet.
Chapter IV: Soothing the savage beast--Keeping control over your instincts
Creature inheritances always come with one pesky similarity: Creature instincts.
Usually, they will not cause too much of a problem, but when things get dicey, instincts can appear.
Try to avoid situations that you know could or will turn dangerous, but when that can't be done, it's best to have someone else around that can act as a distraction or calm you back down before something unfortunate happens. Usually, anyone will work, but in high-intensity situations, such as a threat to a mate, only the mate's touch and influence can diffuse the situation.
In most cases, creatures are protected by laws that allow for protection of one's mate, but it's usually better to avoid losing control in the first place, if at all possible.
Chapter V: Bloodsucking parasites--What to do when your menu changes
For those that gain a preference for blood (or, occasionally, other forms of sustenence) the best plan is to only allow the people that will be your donors to know. In most cases, three to four donors will suffice, especially if one of those is your mate, which most often will afford that person some extra protection from overfeeding, as well.
Sometimes feeding directly from your donors is the only option, but in a few cases, if the donors are skittish or unable but still willing to help, drinking fresh blood from a goblet is an option.
A word of friendly advice, though: Blood-flavored lollipops, while a delicious treat, will not fill the need and oftentimes only leaves a more compelling need behind it.
