Chapter 1 - The Plea
Harry sighed heavily as he wiped the sweat from his brow and pulled his shirt over his head. The rag was tossed aside after being used to wipe the dirt from his hands. Emerald eyes observed the fruit of his labor as he took in the weeded garden. The plants were neatly aligned and sorted by color of the flowers; the fruits were separate from the vegetables, the vines starting up their trestles, and not a single weed in sight. He stared at the garden for a moment longer before he heard his name being called from the perfectly normal house behind him. Heaving a great sigh, he stood, stretching his back and groaning as it gave a resounding pop before grabbing his shirt. Looking once more over the garden, he turned and headed into the house to see what was required of him since his outdoors work was completed. “Boy, did you finish weeding the gardens and fixing the fence?” Vernon questioned. “Yes sir,” Harry replied, careful to keep his voice even. “The garden has been weeded, the plants tended, and the fences and trestles repaired sir.” Vernon eyed him critically before nodding his head, “Good, I will be checking that it was done correctly. Go make dinner now.” Harry nodded and headed off to the kitchen only to stop and turn to his Uncle, “Uncle, perhaps you should lie down, you do look a bit peaky.” “Boy, go make dinner like I told you before I take the strap to you again,” Vernon growled lowly. “Yes sir.” Harry shook his head as he entered the kitchen, tossing his shirt into the laundry room and started to gather the meat his Aunt had left out for him to cook. Looking through the cupboards, he pulled out some of the fresh veggies from the garden out back. He grinned at his hard labor’s produce and started to fix the delicious dinner that he would be lucky if he got any of. While his family had been a bit better to him over this summer, he had no delusions that they did it out of the goodness of their heart. Harry had a strong suspicion that someone had spoken to them, after what they had witnessed when they retrieved him the previous year. He quickly shook his head to rid himself of memories of his fifth year, returning instead to the present as he nearly cut himself. As he laid the table for dinner, placing each plate full of food and glass full of drink in their proper places, Harry noticed an owl approaching the window. Knowing no good would come of an owl in the kitchen much less one in the house; he quickly opened the window and took the letter before sending the owl off with a nibble of chicken. He stuffed the letter in his back pocket and walked to the living-room where his family was seated around the telly. He cleared his throat and waited to be acknowledged. “Dinner is ready.” “About time boy, couldn’t you have cooked it faster?” Vernon grumbled. “I wanted to make sure that it was the best it could be. I’m sorry it took so long Uncle,” Harry placated as he stepped aside so that the robust man could get by him to the kitchen. Vernon eyed him critically as he passed to see if the boy was mouthing off before grumbling again, “Then it had better be the best damn meal any of us had boy.” “Yes sir. I’ll be in my room if any of you need me,” Harry said before turning and climbing the stairs to his room. Closing the door behind him, Harry walked over to the desk in front of his window and sat down. He pulled the letter from his back pocket and laid the envelope on his desk. Eyeing the name scrawled on the front, he noted that the handwriting was very familiar but he couldn’t place it at the moment. Shrugging his shoulders to himself, he opened the letter and started to read, noting that in places the ink had smudged and blurred, sometimes the areas were like someone had cried and others were red droplets.
Potter Harry-
I need your help. You’re the only person I feel that I can turn to that won’t ask for something in return that I can’t give or am unwilling to give. I come to you because you are the only person who has never led me to believe you feel anything for me except hate. You have never once looked at me and wanted to use me for anything and I thank you for that. I hope that we may put aside our differences and call a truce as I am in need and pray to Merlin or whoever will listen that you will look past our history and help me.
My father has decided that I am to be marked by the end of this summer. I do not wish to take the mark but I find that my choice is being removed by the man. I have no desire to serve a mad man who is as ugly on the outside as he is on the inside. Please Harry, I have never begged for anything in my life, but I am begging you to please look past the hatred of the person I was and help the person that I may become. You are the only person in this world that I trust and I am hoping that this does not get thrown back in my face. I do not imagine that you are the type to turn away those in need of help and I am counting on this.
I haven’t much time left. Father was particularly angry this evening when I continued to disagree to take the mark. I know he is only asking to give himself a clear conscious, but I refuse to take the mark. I absolutely hate my father for this. He has made his choice and I wish to have to part of it. If there is any way you can help me, please send your owl. I know Hedwig; her white feathers are not common. Send her to me with no letter, just so that I might see her outside my window. Tell her to wait for a reply and I will send any information that you need. Please, I have a little less than a week before my birthday and I am sure that he means to have me marked either the day of or the day after.
Sincerely,
Draco Malfoy
Heir
Harry almost couldn’t believe the words he read. Judging by the blurred spots from tears and blood, the letter was genuine. He did wonder why Malfoy had not sent a letter to Snape or Dumbledore, but he did state that he didn’t trust them. Shaking his head, he ran his hand through his hair creating more disarray of the already messy hair. Harry contemplated his next move. He knew that Malfoy couldn’t go to Sirius’ home, not without the secret keeper speaking the address. Growing frustrated quickly at his unhelpful thoughts, Harry looked to Hedwig. She perched on her cage and looked at him with warm amber eyes. He nodded, knowing that he had to send a letter to Dumbledore. He called Hedwig over and gave her a treat as he quickly penned a short note to the Headmaster with little to no explanation as to why he wanted the address sent to Malfoy. Remembering at the last moment what Malfoy had said, Harry quickly amended that he please wait to send it until he had heard back from Malfoy. He tied the letter to Hedwig’s leg and instructed her to take it to Dumbledore, not to wait for a reply but to go straight to Draco Malfoy and wait there for his reply. She hooted softly and affectionately nipped his ear before taking off out the open window.
Harry watched as his owl flew away with a heavy mind. Thoughts of Malfoy turned round and round in his head as he headed back downstairs to clean up the kitchen from dinner. Snagging some leftovers, he put them in a container and put the rest away, absentmindedly cleaning the dishes and table. He wondered what injuries that Malfoy could have had that would cause such a proud person to not only cry but come to him for assistance when they clearly couldn’t stand each other. While he didn’t hate Malfoy, he certainly held no love for the man. Shaking his head to get his mind back on cleaning the kitchen, he finished up and went up stairs with his container and a fork. While he ate in his room, careful to save a bit of chicken for Hedwig, he went over ideas of what he could do for Malfoy to help and how to implement the plans he was making.BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BE-Harry smacked at the alarm on the corner of his desk, effectively stopping the god-awful noise. Yawning he stretched, his back aching something awful as he realized he fell asleep at his desk. Groaning, Harry looked out the window and noticed that it was approaching daylight on the horizon. He looked over his shoulder to see Hedwig on the top of her cage with a letter tied to her leg with Malfoy’s scrawl on the front. He quickly untied it and scanned the letter.
Harry-
I am thankful that you got my letter and that you have decided to help me. I cannot express how much this means to me that you looked past my past. I must confess that I was half afraid that your owl would not come to me. Again, I thank you.
The reason I write to you is to tell you that I will have an opportunity on this Friday to escape this hell-hole. It will be the only time I am completely alone in this prison and the only time I will have to leave without being followed or tracked. I ask that if you have a plan that you let me know what it is. I will be packed and ready to go on this day.
It has gotten hard to contact you so this may be my last letter to you until I see you on Friday. Again, thank you Harry, thank you for everything you risk in helping me. I will find a way to pay you back for your kindness though I don’t know how I possibly could.
Sincerely,
Draco Malfoy
Heir
Harry nodded to himself as he scrawled a short note to Dumbledore to send the address to Malfoy, instructing him to have the house prepared for his arrival on Friday and requesting that he be there for the arrival of their new guest. He tied it to Hedwig’s leg and told her to wait for Dumbledore to give her the address and then to stay with Malfoy until he left Malfoy Manor on Friday and that if something were to go wrong, to grab a flower and fly directly back to himself. She hooted with understanding and pressed her head against his cheek before taking off again out the window. Harry watched her before heading downstairs to start the day and wait for a school owl with a reply from the Headmaster.
Author’s Note: This is the first story I have written in years. The Last two I was working on were removed. I hope that you enjoy this first chapter. I apologize if the chapters are not quick to come out but I must take care of my classes first, write second. Please enjoy and know that I have no beta. If anyone would like the position, please feel free to write to me at friedchick_4583@yahoo.com. I will continue to work on this story and hopefully I won’t lose it like I did the last two, nor will I lose focus of what my original story was.
