It was raining. It always rained, at least in Britain, far too often for Severus to even pretend to say he liked it. He hated rain. He hated heat and cold and clouds and even the occasional hail. There wasn’t much to like about Britain, especially in Cokeworth, and Severus definitely could not be arsed to come up with a single thing. Not right now. He was pissed, because of the rain. Mostly. There were other things to be upset about, His father's abusive ways, the fact that his mother seemed to have fallen off the planet, it was likely she was just locked in the basement again and not allowed to write, but right now, Severus was content to merely be irritated with the droplets of water currently falling from the sky.
On another planet, in a different time, he was crying. Or maybe it was the same planet, maybe it was the same time, he didn’t know. Depression, the muggles called it, when something hurt in the most profound of ways. He’d always buried emotions like that, heartbreak, sorrow, deep down inside and left only a deep-seated rage and a thin veneer of happiness covering his soul. It made him dangerous and raw and vindictive and desperately in need of a friend - someone to make him better than he was, to save him from himself, in a way.
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and wizardry is an extraordinary place, when you think about it. It has all the best parts of magic, the good and the bad, and the people you're likely to spend the rest of your life hearing about and seeing, as the wizarding world of Britain was very small. Your house is like your family they say, and with seven years to spend, you form relationships that will last a lifetime. Severus thought if anyone would fucking look at him, maybe he could find out what all the fuss was about.
Just like home, it felt like everyone was staring right through him. These slytherins could glare, seeing his awful house, at Spinner's End, where the soot covers half the people, let alone the streets. They whispered half blood harshly at him throughout the halls, and the other houses just whispered slytherin, still vindictive, all the same. Even Lilly, his childhood friend, the girl he wanted to most impress, was in a different house, gryffindor, where they were telling her all sorts of lies about everyone in slytherin. Just once, Severus wanted to be able to prove to somebody, anybody, he wasn't what his DNA, his neighborhood, his father was. Severus was his own person, god damnit.
Sitting here, in the common room was a rarity, even though this was still November. When the student population decides they don't like you, you get lost. His potions essay in front of him, he was going to enjoy the silence while it lasted.
"So you're the half blood?" Lucius Malfoy, heir to the Malfoy throne, prince of Slytherin, and pompous arse drawled from his place by the fire. Severus Snape, a first year, looks up from his potions essay at him with wide eyes.
"Yes, I am." Severus answers, suprised at how calm his voice sounds when inside he's cowering in fear. This boy, only a third year himself, was feared and worshiped by all fellow slytherins. His fortune made him famous, his good-looks made him charming and his eyes, his cold, calculating eyes, made him feared. Severus was just as scared as enamored with the man.
"Impressive, kind of hard for your sort to win admittance to the snake pit." he said, turning towards Severus. "I want you as a friend. Getting into Slytherin must mean great things lie ahead for you, and I want to help you on your way to greatness. I'll teach you the ways of society. What do you say?" Lucius extended out a hand, extending social standing and firm footing for the slytherin nobody wanted. He huffed impatiently, none the wiser Severus was battling himself internally.
Severus was stunned. Never in his life had anyone, save Lilly, wanted to be his friend. This was Lucius Malfoy, offering Severus the greatest gift of his life. To teach him what his father so desperately wants to keep him from, the ways of wizarding society. after more than a polite second of foolish thought, he decided he was far from refusing.
"Um, okay." Severus shook the offered hand, abet awkwardly. He looked up into Lucius' swirling grey depths and gulped. What had he gotten himself into.
"Good." Lucius purred in that endearing way of his. "Your training starts at dawn. Wear something tight." Lucius rose from his lounge, and walked in the direction of the dorms. All the while, Severus watched him walk away, mesmerized by his grace.
This was actually happening. Oh god, this was actually happening. Severus wouldn’t have believed it if he hadn’t seen it for himself. Someone actually talked to him, shook his hand, made him feel like he wasn't a piece of mud on their shoe, and Lucius was known to give out those sort of looks. Lucius Malfoy of all people had seen the potential in him, and decided he was going to mold Severus into what he could never be alone, an actual wizard who belonged at Hogwarts, in the wizarding society. He was mixing himself with a filthy half blood because what, he felt like it. Severus was not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, as his father says, but this just seemed strange. As strange as his Ancient Ruins homework.
As Severus decided he had done enough homework for the night, he rounded on the staircase to lock eyes with the most gorgeous woman he had ever seen. Her hair fell in thick, raven waves around her head and shoulders, and she wore an expression of shock, until she saw it was Severus the Half blood, that is. Then she sneered and moved beyond his sight, probably to go rinse her eyes with bleach. Well, some things just aren't going to change. Or maybe they were. Optimism was never Severus' forte, but if The Ice King himself wanted to be his friend, he figured miracles could happen.
