Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter, nor do I make money from this fic. |
A/N: Currently not Beta'd. Also this is my first fanfic; some of you may even recognize me from reviews. ^.^ This will be a slow posted story, however I'm writing as much as I can when I can. I'm hoping to complete this story, as I hate abandoned stories. Remember, the characters belong to lovely Ms. Rowling; I just snuck off to play is all. No money is made, either. Also, the characters will often seem OOC; can't help it, but it's why this is listed as AU type. There will be Dumbledore-bashing, implied or otherwise. This will be mostly M/M, thought there will be some M/F pairings as well. If your not a fan of one or the other, sorry; I personally don't mind either. I also apologize for any mistakes in spelling. I'm sure some slipped through the cracks.
Pairings: M/M, M/F...oh wait, you want persons, hmm: ^.^ HP/SS, DM/HG, PP/RW, AG/NL, BZ/GW, DG/??
Summary: Harry has noticed things, and decided a change is needed. He makes his own side, asking for an Oath of Loyalty that, while doesn't mark them, ensures their secrets cannot be found out by Legelimency or Veritaserum. It's a fine edge they walk; will Harry and his allies fall or will they take them all by surprise?
Chapter 1: Bad Timing
Severus had just made it to the main doors when the strength left him; tonight was brutal as the Dark Lord was furious over something or another and decided none of his followers would be spared. Even Bellatrix, the mad bitch she was, was tortured with a few Crucios. Thankfully it was a Friday so Severus could relax the next day, now if he could only get to his rooms. He groaned as he slid to his knees, the halls becoming blurry as his stomach lurched. Fighting down his nausea, Severus was appalled when he heard a group of people coming his way. He couldn’t think who in Merlin’s name would be out this late at night, for he was sure it was past 2 am; though he hoped it was students that he could frighten into silence. A colleague would demand an explanation, and he couldn’t give one without Albus’ approval.“Severus!” Minerva McGonagall’s voice was thankfully hushed, and at least he knew he wouldn’t have to explain why he was out this late at night. It wasn’t until she already had his left arm over her shoulder, and subsequently felt his right being pulled over someone else’s shoulder, that he remembered there was more than one person.
He wanted to look, willed his body to do as he demanded, but he couldn’t open his eyes much less lift his head as he was, quite literally, dragged between the two people. “Who?” Was all he could manage to say, his voice hoarse from the fight not to scream during the Dark Lord’s revelry.
“Later, Severus; let’s get you down to your quarters.” Minerva looked over at the young man on Severus’ other side, knowing it would gall the proud man to have this particular person see him this way. Though if it wasn’t for him, Severus may very well have lain there all night and been spotted, hopefully still alive, in the morning by someone else who would ask many questions.
They finally arrive at a picture of a proud man in Slytherin green, long black hair greying at the temples, and cold green eyes. A snake slithers around his feet and the man looks from one to the other.
“Does he know who aids him?” The portrait asks Minerva.
“No, and we shall wait until he is better to inform him. Endurance.” The portrait swings open and they enter in the room, bringing the limp form of Severus to the couch and laying him down carefully.
Minerva lights the fire and taps the bricks in a specific order Severus once showed her to lock down the Floo; even Albus couldn’t get through, though she could only because he set the wards to allow her access. Just like she was given his password and permission to enter if she felt it was needed. She looked at the student that helped, sternly.
“Nothing of tonight is to be revealed to anyone, is that understood?” Her strict demeanor fell as teary green eyes looked at her and she shook her head having already told him to be quiet until they left Severus.
She transfigures the couch to a comfortable bed and summoned a few potions to give to him, confirming it was she and they were in his quarters and yes, she already locked his Floo. Once he was settled and sleeping, she left his quarters and escorted Harry up to her own, determined to get those answers now.
“Mr. Potter, while I am grateful you were able to know Professor Snape needed assistance and decided to help instead of letting him suffer, I will know, now, how you came to this knowledge. All of it, Mr. Potter, I will be quite cross if I find you left something out intentionally.” Minerva McGonagall was a proud Gryffindor, and she was very loyal, but she also had a temper and was protective of those she considered under her care. Even though a Slytherin, Severus always had a place in her heart and right now she worried for his health and safety; to know a student was aware of his state of health made her want to ensure her dear friend wouldn’t be in harm’s way.
“Professor Dumbledore didn’t want me to tell anyone, Ma’am, but seeing as you acted when in the past he didn’t, I feel its best you know.” He let her dwell on that statement a moment, her eyes widening his only clue that she suspected he would tell her something she wouldn’t like.
“For years I have been able to tell when Voldemort is nearby as my scar would burn and sometimes bleed.” He wiped at the, now, dried blood that crusted his scar with the cloth he snagged earlier in his race to find help.
“Since he gained a body, I have begun receiving visions when he feels extreme emotions, usually anger or happiness, but sometimes he sends me false visions or pulls me into his mind. I suspected he and I shared some type of mental connection, and mentioned it to the Headmaster, but after the first few failed Occlumency lessons with Professor Snape,” he didn’t want to waste time being reprimanded to call him ‘Professor’, “it was stopped. Professor Dumbledore was very distant with me last year, I’m sure you remember many instances where I was right there, trying to talk to him, and he ignored me.” He waits for her nod before continuing, “At first I thought I had done something wrong, but then I realized the nudging I got from when Sn…um Professor Snape entered my mind was the same feeling I got when around Professor Dumbledore. I asked Professor Snape during one of our lessons if the Headmaster knew Legilimency and he said yes. I knew then that Headmaster Dumbledore had entered my mind many times before; so why wouldn’t he do it now. It wasn’t until after I was pulled into Voldemort’s mind that it hit me; the Headmaster was afraid Voldemort could read his mind through me. It was absurd to think about, but it was the only thing that made sense. A few times this year already I had visions where Professor Snape was hurt and I informed the Headmaster, but he told me that Professor Snape could handle things fine and not to worry. It was one Saturday, when Professor Snape didn’t make an appearance until dinner and he looked horrible that I realized no one knew when he was injured except me, and though I told the Headmaster, no one was helping him when he needed it. I knew he wouldn’t accept my help readily, and the Headmaster just brushed it off; you’re part of the Order and already know of his position. You wouldn’t ask questions about why he was getting hurt because you already knew what he had to do; I expected you would want to know how I knew but was willing to tell you to ensure someone would be willing to help.”
“Mr. Potter, I was under the impression you hated Professor Snape; what changed?” Minerva needed a moment to let all the information soak in; Potter had for a while now seen what went on? And Albus never mentioned anything to her about his painful nights? It was no mistaking those visions were painful, if that scar burned and bled…she blinked in thought. ‘None of his dorm mates said anything; either they don’t know or don’t trust an adult to help.’ Wasn’t that a sad thought, students not coming to the teachers for help; it’s what they were there for!
“Well to be honest, I never hated Professor Snape himself; I hated the way he treated me and the others. I understand he can’t be…well…pleasant to me and that he’s never been fair to the Gryffindors anyway, but I can’t help but resent being the center of such vitriol every day.” Not too much longer Harry is sent off back to bed, assurances that she would not tell Dumbledore, but he was to meet her tomorrow, after breakfast, to inform Professor Snape. He sighs as he lays down, making sure the curtains were closed tight; the man would be in such a rage that the ‘hated son of James Potter’ saw him in such a state.
Severus woke and grimaced, remembering quickly how he was found at the entrance by two people. He was placated by the fact one of them was Minerva, even though they bantered back and forth in what many thought was dislike, he respected her and he knew she respected him. They were friends, and he knew whomever was there with her, she would ensure they told no one. However it was the fact there was an unknown second person who saw him so weak that bothered him. He noticed a note in Minerva’s writing and sat up to read it.
‘Severus,
I will be returning after breakfast to ensure you are well; I will also bring the second person. You can be assured he will tell no one, but I know you will not be settled until you know who it was for yourself. I imagine there is much that will be discussed, so make sure your schedule is cleared.
Sincerely,
Minerva’
Severus sighed, the second person was male and if they retrieved Minerva, then it was a Gryffindor. While he didn’t doubt she would ensure their silence, knowing one of them saw him in such a state galled him. He paced his rooms, tried to brew, even tried to read, but until this was settled he was restless. He didn’t even tell Albus what went on last night; there was no information and the last time he went through such a thing, Albus seemed disappointed and told him if there wasn’t any information then informing him could wait.
Not in so many words of course, but Severus got the idea that unless some information was given, he wasn’t to bother Albus. In a way it suited Severus, he hated telling anyone of those nights he was used as an outlet for anger; granted it wasn’t just him but it was still humiliating.
It was 9 when there was a knock at his door; Severus got up and opened the door knowing Minerva was there. Upon seeing the second person, he sneered and felt the Fates truly despised him. He ushered the two inside and closed the door. Taking a deep breath he walked over to the chair and sat, indicating Minerva and Potter to do the same.
“How are you feeling, Severus?” Minerva sighed at the glare he sent her; she knew he wouldn’t like who the second person was.
Of all the things, Potter had to see him in such a way…and if Minerva expected him to admit to any weakness she lost her mind.
“Professor, I won’t tell anyone.” Harry gulped at the nasty look he got for speaking, Snape must be in a foul mood alright.
“Oh for…Harry hasn’t said a word about what has gone on before, Severus, why would he tell now? He only told me because I am an Order member and wouldn’t ask you questions about being out so late.”
“Before? How many times have you seen me return at night, Mr. Potter?” Severus was less concerned about who he told compared to the thought his path was clearly visible to anyone wandering the castle.
Harry looked uncomfortable and Minerva blinked. “You don’t know…” She faced Harry, “Your choice or Albus’?”
“The Headmaster; he didn’t want me to tell anyone, but it’s hard not to when I wake my dorm mates in the middle of the night.” He looked down and away and Severus felt a muscle in his jaw tick.
“I think someone needs to explain to me now what is going on.” His voice was quiet and calm; Minerva fixed them some tea and patted Harry’s hand.
“Severus I ask you to hold questions until Harry has finished speaking and Harry, I ask you be truthful and not keep anything out. I don’t mean go into specifics as I’m sure Severus doesn’t want anyone to know more than they have to, but don’t be too vague.” She looks between the two getting nods before sitting back to referee the oncoming chaos.
“Right. How much of this connection was explained to you, Professor, the reason behind the Occlumency lessons?” At Severus’ frown, and angry look, he explains, “Well if I’m to leave nothing out, I want to make sure of what you already know. I don’t want to start too far ahead and skip things, but I don’t want to start on things you already know.”
“What I know is that the Dark Lord has some connection that allows him to infiltrate your mind and send you false images.”
Harry sighs and knows this will be a long explanation. “Yes and no, the reason Occlumency hasn’t worked against him is because our minds have the connection. I can’t just put up a wall to keep him out, because he has a door no matter what I do, that allows him access to my mind. I’ve put my memories and things in order, and I’ve hidden things I don’t want him or anyone else to know, but I can’t keep him out.” He rakes a hand through his hair at the blank look; either Snape didn’t believe him, was confused, or was trying to figure it out. “It’s not just about me keeping him out either; he can pull me into his mind when he wants.” That got a wide-eyed stare and a choked “What?”
“He can send me false visions, but not all those visions are false, and even more he is unaware that I can see them sometimes. Really I wouldn’t call them ‘visions’ as that gives the impression it’s a lot like what a Seer experiences. No, usually when he is extremely angry, or extremely pleased, I’m pulled into his mind and see what is going on. It’s not just seeing though; I can hear everything said, smell the air, feel the fabric of what is being touched…or skin or scales…and…” Harry frowns as he tries to put into words, “Well it’s like I’m the one speaking. Occlumency would never had worked, and I told the Headmaster as much. He also knows about these visions; at least the one I had four months ago. I haven’t bothered telling him since, because he won’t help in any way.”
“How long have these visions been going on, Mr. Potter?” Severus’ voice was low and a knot was settled in the pit of his stomach; how many times has Potter seen him writhe on the floor? Subjected to the torment one receives upon failure?
“Well I used to get just flashes before he returned to a body, but since that day in the graveyard, Sir, I have had these visions. Not every night, thank Merlin for small mercies, but with his plans going wrong often, it’s almost been once a week now.” Harry frowns as his scar gives a throb, but his eyes widen as he feels a tug on his mind and his vision seems to be greying out. He knows something is going on, since he can see Snape’s mouth moving but he can’t hear anything. Oh Merlin, no, not during the day! The absurdity isn’t lost on Harry; here he was speaking about visions when he is being pulled into one.
Severus saw the frown and was about to comment on how he wasn’t called once a week so how was that possible, when the sudden widening of green eyes and paling of face alerts him.
“Mr. Potter, is everything alright?” He watches as the boy starts sliding to one side, those green orbs becoming glassy, “Harry?!” Both he and Minerva exclaim as said boy falls to his side on the couch.
“Severus, his scar!” Severus looks and sure enough blood is trickling out. His confusion on how that happened was cleared in Minerva’s next sentence.
“Oh, Harry said when he gets these visions his scar burns and bleeds. He’s never mentioned having them during the day though!”
“He also said he’s had one nearly every week, yet I have not been called so frequently.” He was deciding on whether or not to move the boy or enlarge the couch when suddenly Potter’s body arched up and his mouth dropped open in a silent scream. He starts convulsing and Severus decides to enlarge the couch.
“Severus, what’s going on?!”
“Cruciatus, though I don’t know how. Minerva go into that cabinet and bring me a vial of the yellow potion and the green.” His gaze focuses on Potter’s mouth that moves as if he’s saying something as Minerva hurries to retrieve the potions.
“I am very displeased, Yaxley; how could you fail your Lord so? Crucio!” As the body convulses, Severus is pale as he gazes down at Potter. No this wasn’t just some connection, and perhaps it was more than a mere mind connection like Potter thought; for that voice was not Potter’s. It was one Severus heard each summons and one that sent chills down his spine. He looks up as a hand settles on his shoulder, right into the worried eyes of Minerva. He takes the potions she offered, though before he can pour the first, Potter lets out a horrible scream that echoes in the room before his body stills. Severus is about to reach out to him again when Potter suddenly rolls towards the edge and vomits.
Waving her wand, Minerva cleans up the mess and clears the air. Potter flops back onto the enlarged couch and gazes tiredly at the two Professors. He expected the concern in Professor McGonagall’s eyes, but the worry and near fear in Professor Snape’s confused him.
“Drink these, Potter. This is an anti-Cruciatus potion, it helps repair the damage to the nerves in the body, and I’m sure you’re familiar with the pain potion.” He waits until both vials are down before asking his questions.
“What was that, Mr. Potter?”
“Vision; he must’ve been extremely ticked off. I don’t usually get them during the day, thankfully, but I think one of his plans went wrong.”
“What do you remember?” Severus couldn’t shake the voice he heard coming from Potter’s mouth, nor the way the boy seemed to writhe as if he was under the curse.
“Everything that was said. I don’t know who Yaxley was or what he was supposed to do, but Snake-Face is pissed he now needs to find someone else.”
“Yaxley was a Ministry insider, I think he was supposed to find information for the Dark Lord. What do you mean ‘was’?” Severus saw the weary green eyes and, surprisingly not for once, thought the young man has been through more than anyone his age should ever have.
“First he tortured him with some Cruciatus’, then he used the Killing curse.”
“Harry, does this happen on each vision? Being sick after and the body convulsions?” McGonagall looked extremely distraught, but Harry didn’t want to lie or keep something back; he said he wouldn’t.
“Anytime he uses one of those two curses, yes. Which is nearly every meeting when he’s ticked, or when he’s torturing some hapless Muggles that were captured, or some witch or wizard he thinks has information and they won’t tell him.” Harry closes tired eyes, too tired to see who exactly is smoothing his hair. It feels nice though, so he’s not going to bring attention to it and have it stopped.
“That would be every meeting, yes.” Severus looks down at the almost peaceful face and nearly smiles; he gives a start as he realizes he still so close to Potter and he was…carding his hand through the young man’s hair. He stops and quickly stands, ignoring the frown as he removes his hand and Minerva’s searching gaze, then sits back in his chair.
“Mr. Potter, are you able to continue this conversation, or shall we resume another day?” Severus ignores the way his hand itches to resume running through those messy, silky locks.
“Perhaps another day if you don’t mind, Sir. I’m usually quite worn after a vision; last night I knew someone had to assist you so I was going on adrenaline. Once I went back to my dorm I slept until 8.”
Severus watches as the young man sits up and rubs at his scar, covered in dried blood. He pulls out a handkerchief and spells it moist before handing it to the young man.
Harry accepts it with a quiet ‘thank you’ and wipes away the blood. He sighs as it is cool and once cleaned, goes to hand it back.
“Mr. Potter, your blood is on that cloth, you should not give it away so easily.” Severus sees a flash of pain and anger over his face before the normal curiously blank look takes over.
“Why?” Harry beat back the reaction to that statement; surely Snape doesn’t know what happened in that graveyard, and so he couldn’t be chastising him for something he had no control over.
“A witch or wizard’s blood contains their magical signature, and many spells and rituals can be done without the person’s knowledge if someone had their blood. Steal their bloodline, tie them to marriage, or track them down. There is more, of course, but that is just a few things. Many binding magical contracts use blood as well; you should ensure your blood does not end up in the wrong hands.”
“What if it has? What if there was a ritual already done and my blood was used?”
Severus felt the blood drain from his face; Merlin, what did the young man mean by that? “Do you know of such a thing?” At Potter’s nod, Severus becomes alarmed. “Who?”
“Voldemort; it’s how he got his body back that night in the graveyard. I was tied to the gravestone…well more like they animated the angel grave marker that held me captive, so I couldn’t even fight back.” Pain and anguish over the memories came flooding back and Harry sat in silence trying to push it all back.
“You mean the Dark Lord shares your blood now? Do you remember anything from the ritual?” Severus wasn’t sure, but if the Dark Lord used Potter’s blood, then what was there to stop him from showing up at Potter’s relatives now? Did Dumbledore know?
“I don’t remember the ingredients other than the main three that was needed:
Bone of the Father; Flesh of the Servant; Blood of the Enemy.” Harry turned a bit green at the memory of Wormtail slicing off his own hand. He absently rubbed the spot on his arm that Wormtail cut; ironically it was his left forearm, where normally the Dark Mark would sit.
Minerva looked to Severus and gasped, Severus was quite pale. “Mr. Potter, is Dumbledore aware of this ritual that was done? Did you tell him what you just told us?”
“Of course I did!” Green eyes flashed with fire as anger filled Harry; Snape accused him of being an idiot often but even he would know something like that was important.
Severus raised his hands, ignoring the twitch in his groin at the fire in those eyes ‘Oh if it was the fire of passion…’ No he wouldn’t think like that, Potter was his student and an annoyance. ‘If you say so Sevvie.’ Damnit why did that voice have to sound so much like Lily.
“I wanted to be sure, Mr. Potter; Albus has never mentioned this to me, and I’m sure Minerva will say the same.” He looks over and sure enough Minerva nods, “As I thought. I fear if there is to be any progress in this war, we will have to work together and not rely so much on Albus. I don’t know if it is over confidence, old age, or if he has just lost touch, but I do not believe he will ever share information with any of us that may help us, or keep some of us alive.” He looks at Potter and takes a calming breath.
“Mr. Potter I think we will need to work together and to do that successfully, we will need to get beyond this animosity.” He frowns at the amused looks he gets from the young man.
“I have no problem with that sir, but do you think you can get over this hatred you have of me? As I told Professor McGonagall, I never hated you, just your actions and the way you treat me and the other students. I don’t know you, so I can’t hate you.” He blinks at the looks that passes over his Professor’s face; it wasn’t there long, but it looked like…hope? Why would Snape feel hope on that? Wait, if he wants this to work, of course he’d have hope.
Severus, on the other hand, was elated. Potter didn’t truly hate him, he had a chance to prove to someone he wasn’t a bad guy…but, he still had a part to act. Would that get in the way?
“You realize that I still have to act nasty and hateful to you around the other students…possibly even Dumbledore, correct?” He nearly sighs when Potter nods, perhaps this wouldn’t be so bad.
“I understand, Sir, as it would be bad for you if Voldemort heard of your change in behavior to me.”
“Well this is wonderful,” Minerva nearly laughed as the two looked at her quickly; they must’ve forgotten she was there in their little ‘moment’. Oh she wouldn’t let on that she saw, but Minerva was certain Harry would be able to help Severus, perhaps even get through that wall he surrounded his heart with. “We’ll finally get some answers, be able to discuss things out and make plans that actually make sense. Severus you’ll have to teach Harry some better Defense than what is currently being taught; honestly it’s a wonder any of the students pass their N.E.W.Ts.” She tsks and both men nod feeling relieved. Minerva just smiles to herself.
“Of course, Mr. Potter we should examine your schedule and plan when would be the best time for extra lessons.”
Harry asks for some parchment and a schedule is made; after agreeing to only include those that can be trusted completely, Harry and Minerva leave Severus’ quarters and part ways. Harry has some friends to question and dreads the answers and possible reactions when he’s done.
