Disclaimer: I do not own the Harry Potter series, the lovely JK Rowling does. I make no monies from this. Le Sigh. |
Hadrian “Harry” Potter sat on the edge of his bed, the soft light of the moon filtered down on him through large windows that lined one wall of his bedroom, making his pale skin glow.
‘Only 18 more minutes,’ he thought to himself, reaching up to adjust his glasses over his bright green eyes. Harry tried to stay calm, but when you are about to turn 17 and gain your creature inheritance, it is hard not to be excited.
He needed to distract himself, looking around his room, he noted the long bench that ran along the windowed wall, the bench housed a myriad of books under it while on top of it books and Quidditch gear competed for space. The next wall housed no windows, but had two doors, one to his large closet and the other to his private washroom. Lining the entire wall, only breaking for the doors were bookshelves, they were reinforced with magic to keep them from collapsing under the weight of the books they held.
These were the just the tip of the iceberg, Harry also had several libraries full of books, being the sole heir to a Most Noble family and being the godson of the Lord to a Noble and Most Ancient family had its perks. But, these books, the ones he kept closest to him were the ones he treasured most.
There were a few old wizarding story books, ones his godfather had read to him growing up, but most were focused his favorite subjects: The Dark Arts, Ancient Runes, Arithmancy, Potions and Magical Creatures.
He also had a few books on the lineage of wizarding society, as the heir to ‘The Most Noble House of Potter’ he needed to understand just who he was and where he came from, as well where the other great houses descended from. His godfather, Lord Sirius Black, had drilled that into him from a young age, to forget the past is a dangerous thing.
Emerald green eyes glanced to the next wall, which held his desk, covered in stacks of parchment, random books, quills, ink pots, pictures of his friends and family, and in the center were all the letters he had received the last few days, congratulating him, and wishing him the happiest of birthdays. It was an organized chaos. The imposing cherry wood desk had been his fathers, it had many drawers that were charmed to expand and help the user keep their files in order. Harry could only assume that Sirius had been too preoccupied with Hadrian’s birthday to tease him about the state of his desktop. Normally, his godfather would have made some comment about Harry being a packrat or slob by now.
Just next to his desk was the door that led out to the third-floor hallway of Potter manor, he knew just down the hall his godfather waited anxiously for it to be exactly 17 years since Hadrian was born, for his magic to fully manifest and his creature inheritance to emerge. They were both excited and Harry knew, Sirius was also sad in a way. Harry had been Sirius’ focus for so long, and after this school year, everything would change.
Continuing to sweep his eyes along the wall, his gaze stopped at his broom leaning against the corner, with his Quidditch jersey hanging next to it. In brilliant green, silver and black, the word “Potter” and the number 2 adorned the back of his jersey; he knew if he turned it around it would have the crest of his Hogwarts house, Slytherin, embroidered on the front. He couldn’t help the chuckle that escaped him, thinking back at people’s reaction to his Hogwarts sorting. To be fair, he had also been a bit surprised to find himself in house of snakes, but not too surprised.
His eyes continued their trek, stopping for a second on his school trunk, and then landed on the green cloak laying on the edge of his bed.
With an excited bounce, Harry pulled his pocket watch out of his pajama bottoms, glancing at the gift his godfather had given him earlier at his grand 17th birthday party, he was very disappointed to see that cataloguing his bedroom had only taken 3 minutes to do and he still had 15 minutes left until his inheritance.
Flopping onto his back with a groan, Harry’s messy black curls fanned out around his head like a dark halo, contrasting with his silver bedspread.
Closing his eyes, Harry couldn’t help but think about how different his life could have turned out, about how everything changed one night when he was just a year old.
No one really understood what had happened, the Dark Lord Voldemort, a man who had been actively working to keep the old ways, a man who had been the heir to the great house of Slytherin, attacked Harry and his family while they were vacationing in one of their cottages for Halloween. Voldemort killed both his parents and attempted to kill Harry, but the curse backfired on the Dark Lord, saving Harry, but destroying Voldemort.
According to Albus Dumbledore, Headmaster of Hogwarts and the man who fought Voldemort tooth and nail on everything he ever did, Voldemort was evil and wanted to rule the wizarding world. Voldemort had seen young Hadrian as a threat, one who may be powerful enough to stop him one day.
Everyone who knew the Potter’s called bollocks on Dumbledore, considering the Potter’s had been one of Voldemort’s biggest supporters and had been known to have close council with the Dark Lord on more than one occasion.
It was a mystery that may never be solved. It was whispered that the Dark Lord had risen again, three years before. However, he was staying underground it seemed, and the Ministry was denying all allegations of his return.
Hadrian had been raised by his godfather, Sirius. Though Dumbledore did try to get Harry’s custody transferred to his Aunt Petunia. It was thought that Harry’s mother dying for him had triggered an ancient form of magical protection around Harry, saving him from dying that night. Dumbledore wanted Harry to live with his Muggle Aunt and her family to use, what he called ‘Blood Wards’ to protect Harry from the Dark Lord should he return.
Sirius fought the request, noting that Harry needed to be raised to take over as head of a great house, he couldn’t do that being raised by Muggles and Blood Wards only work when related by blood, Harry’s mum had been adopted by her Muggle parents and was actually a Pureblood, so the Blood Wards would be non-existent. Thankfully, the Ministry of Child Welfare was not stupid enough to okay Dumbledore’s request.
They were finally left alone after that and, all things considered, Harry had a normal life.
He had private tutors from age 3 and up, with weekly lessons with other children from notable families. He absorbed knowledge like a sponge, always wanting to know more and understand how magic worked, how to manipulate it to his every whim.
The Dark Arts were his favorites, Ancient Runes and Arithmancy were second, but because of the great help they were to the Dark Arts. Potions were another love of Hadrian’s; they were so difficult and precise. They were a challenge which Harry loved, they also could be combined with his other favorite subjects to aid in brewing or enhancing an ingredient. How Runes and Arithmancy could aid Potions was Harry’s thesis, which aided him in getting into advanced classes for all his favored subjects. Aside from the Dark Arts, which weren’t taught in Hogwarts, which was a shame, but gaining the strong base in other subjects would help his independent study. All the classes at Hogwarts helped with his knowledge and magical strength.
Except for Magical Creatures. That class was a joke. It was Magical Zoology but named wrong. And the class didn’t have a qualified teacher. Hadrian self-studied Magical Creatures, they were so important to the history of magic and the world.
When Hadrian was 6, Sirius sat him down to tell him about Magical Creatures for the first time.
” When this world first came into being, there were many different types of creatures roaming the earth,” Sirius had explained. “There were Giants, Dragons, The Great Elvin Races, Gargoyles, Viperidae, Wolves and Veelas, just to name a few. Of course, there were humans as well.
“Hundreds of types of creatures, all with magic; they were intelligent with their own strengths and gifts. They each ruled their own portion of the world; however, things quickly became cramped.
“Fighting amongst species began and the High Elves or Dark Elves as some called them, tried to hold court to deal with disputes between species. However, it didn’t help for long.
“Soon, it seemed as if the world would end. Great wars raged, entire sections of the earth were destroyed and the creatures with the abilities to do so were leaving Earth to go other realms to find peace.”
Harry stared up at his godfather, intently listening, as it was rare for Sirius to be so serious about anything, he much preferred to joke and play with young Harry.
“Soon, most of the Elvin Races had moved on to new realms, many Giant tribes had fled as well, leaving only the Giants without enough magic and intelligence behind. Dragons had also wanted to move on, but their magic was wild and untamed, therefore, not stable enough to make a trip into a new realm without killing their mortal bodies. So, they did something else, they shed their physical forms and became pure energy and magic. This way they could go to any realm they wanted, and they chose to leave the dying earth behind. Only their physical bodies stayed, falling into an animalistic nature, and forgetting their once existence as wise, magical beings.
“Soon, humans were the most prolific species in the world, and the remaining Veelas, Gargoyles, Fae and Viperidae discovered they could have children with humans. The children were not fully creature, but also not fully human as well. These children had many characteristics of both their parents, most looked human, but had aspects of the creatures that sired or carried them. Such as beauty, grace, and the ability to morph into Veela-like birds of prey when the ones they love are in harm’s way. Or having a tall and muscular stature and being able to transform, becoming even larger and sporting great wings and skin that looks like stone for those with Gargoyle blood. Fae halflings had different powers depending on what type of Fae begat them; from shapeshifters, to elementals, or beings that were just good with plants or animals as Fae are known for. Wolves found that if they had children with, or bit a human, they could make a Werewolf. Not fully wolf, not fully man, they could shape-shift into wolves, and are fierce and noble. Then, there are Viperidae...”
Sirius was stopped mid-sentence by Harry nodding and saying, “That is what I am.”
“How do you know that, Short-stack?” Sirius asked, his grey eyes staring, puzzled at his godson.
“I’m not short, I’m six,” Harry had to interject first, as he always did when that term of endearment was used. “I have a dream, all the time.”
“What sort of dream, Hadrian?”
“I am grown-up, and I am running, through a forest, I am so fast, it is like I am flying! I am so happy! But there is someone chasing me, but I want him to chase me... it is hard to explain,” Harry’s face scrunched up, his bright eyes scanning the room around him, trying to find the words to express what the dream was like. “We are there together; he protects me, and makes me happy... I love him. I am running ahead of him, but he catches up to me and we are running side by side, he grins at me then he tackles me, and we play fight for a little bit, but he wins, he always wins. He is laughing and he calls me his ‘Little Viper’. That is how I know. I’m a Viper, but so is the man in my dream.”
“Why have you never told me about this, Hadrian?” Sirius asked a look of realization on his face.
“Because the dream... it doesn’t seem right to tell other people about it,” Harry tried to explain, looking up at his godfather, hoping he wasn’t mad at him.
“It is fine, Hadrian, I understand, a Mating Wraith is a very good thing. Not many have them anymore, and to have one so young is rare, but I am glad for you.”
“Mating Wraith?”
“Most magical creatures have destined mates, another person they are meant to be with for the rest of their lives. It is no longer common, but in the ancient days, when everyone still celebrated the old festivals and magic was not as restricted, magic itself would give mates dreams of their intendeds to help them find each other.”
“So, one day, the man in my dream will be my husband?” Harry inquired.
“Yes, by the sounds of it, he will be your Dominant, considering he tackles you in the Mating Wraith and calls you ‘Little Viper’,” Sirius answered, his brow scrunched up as he thought.
“What’s a Dominant?” Harry looked up his godfather, his head tilted and confusion in his emerald eyes.
“Uh... well, um...” Sirius stumbled over his words, trying to figure out how to answer his very young godson. “When people are in a relationship, they each have their own strengths they bring to it. With some Magical Creatures, they have the Dominant partner and the Submissive partner. Oh, this is hard to explain...”
Sirius ran his hands through is short black hair making it stand up and causing Harry to laugh.
“Oh, I know! Have you ever watched your Aunt Cissa and Uncle Lucius together? Their Light Veela, so they have a Dom/Sub bond.”
Quieting his laughter, Harry thought about his time with his best friend, Draco, and Draco’s parents.
“Well, Uncle Lucius is very protective of Auntie Cissa, she makes sure he has everything he needs; he seems to be in control most of the time... but sometimes Auntie Cissa is in control and Uncle Lucius just doesn’t realize it.”
Sirius let out a bark of laughter which turned into a laughing fit until tears leaked from the corner of his eyes at Harry’s astute observation.
“Quite right, pup, quite right,” Sirius chuckled.
Hadrian was pulled from his memory by a sharp pain running down his spine. Sitting up he glanced at his pocket watch and realized it was time. The gold watch slipped from his hand and landed with a bounce on the bed, as Harry stood.
The heat radiating from his skin was nearly unbearable; he stripped off his pajama pants before falling to his knees.
His glasses were flung off into a corner of his room before Harry collapsed completely onto the floor, the room around him dimming into blackness.
Freezing.
He was freezing.
That was the first thing to run through Hadrian’s mind as he came to and blinked up at the bright sun shining through his windows.
Quickly getting up and running to his desk, Harry greatly increased the temperature of his room.
“I just had to inherit a cold-blooded magical creature,” Harry mumbled to himself, turning towards his closet in search of warm clothes.
Stopping in front of the floor-length mirror in his closet, Harry noted that he didn’t look all that different. He no longer needed his glasses, and his hips had widened.
“All the better to birth children with...” he whispered, still not entirely sure how he felt about that.
Paying close attention to his skin, he was disappointed that he didn’t seem to have any scale spots, which he read were common with Viperidae. Turning, he was surprised by a flash of green, a scale spot! He did have one, shaped almost like a diamond, was a grouping of scales just above his butt crack.
“Great, a Viper tramp-stamp,” Harry chuckled to himself.
Checking his mouth next, he noticed his canine’s had slightly elongated, and came to a sharper point.
Hadrian couldn’t help but wonder what his full Viperidae form looked like, however, he might never know. Vipers sometimes transformed into their full forms when in life threatening situations or after they studied for a very long time. He had read the shortest a Viper had ever studied to transform at will was fifteen years. Many Viperidae never have the reason or ability to transform. Hopefully, he had a mate who would be able to teach him or allow him to go to classes at the Viperidae homeland.
Shaking himself from his thoughts, Harry quickly donned some warm clothes and added a warming charm to them after grabbing his wand. He slipped out of his room, heading for the family parlor, knowing his godfather was probably there waiting for him.
