This is my first attempt at a fanfiction so reviews would be a great help. Also the warnings are for what I think will come up in the story in the future, I just wanted to cover all my bases. This should be canon up to the end of The Order of the Pheonix, the story starts the summer after Sirius dies.
Chapter One
It was on a cool morning in late July that, as the sun rose above the rooftops of privet drive, the sunlight shown into the upper windows of the forth house on the street. The light struck and lingered on the pale, gaunt face of the young wizard that lived there. The dark circles under the young man's eyes would show plainly to anyone who cared, not that there were any near by, that he hadn't slept well, if at all, for some time. While the shadows in his eyes showed the cause; nightmares plagued the boy every time he closed his eyes. Most nights recently he didn't even try, instead he sat at the window and watched the night world outside, only moving once the sun had come up.This morning was no different. When Harry saw that the sun was up he stood, stretched, and made his way down stairs to start breakfast for the Dursleys. He had to move quickly because the Dursleys had to be out of the house by 8:30 to catch their plane. Vernon had won a trip for three at his job and they were due to leave today. Luck had been with Harry as Mrs. Figg had not been able to watch him so the Dursleys were forced to leave him in the house to take care of himself. He would be left with a three page list of chores and a stern warning that if they weren't done and done well by the time they returned there would be hell to pay.
Harry had finished the bacon and toast while the scrambled eggs where a minute from being done when his aunt came into the kitchen and shooed him away from the stove.
“Go get the luggage into the car, and make sure that it wont rattle around! The last thing we need is for one of the bags to burst open because you didn't pack the trunk right!”
Harry nodded and headed to the front hall where all the bags were stacked waiting to be loaded. Harry couldn't understand how they could possibly need ten bags between the three of them, but he figured that at least two of them contained snacks for Dudley and another his games. Not that it mattered to Harry, he just did what he was told and packed the trunk to the best of his ability before closing the trunk and heading back inside. Where he was confronted by his uncle.
“Now you listen to me, Boy. While we are gone you are to do nothing but the chores we left for you to do. When you are not working on the list you are to be in your room. You are not to touch anything like the Telly or go into any of the bedrooms. Do not leave the house! And none of your freakishness! Don't even answer the door.” Vernon was an inch away from Harry's face as he spoke to him and with each point he made he poked Harry in his chest to get the point across. He didn't like having to leave the Freak alone in his home, but the old woman he was normally left with was unavailable so it was either leave him or take him along and there was no way he was coming with them. “If there is even a hint that any of sort freakishness has gone on, or if the list isn't done to perfection, you will rue the day your no-good mother birthed you!”
The man would have gone on but Petunia interrupted to point out that it was 8:25 and they really needed to get going. Vernon nodded in agreement and herded his wife and son out the door, turning to give Harry one last glare before closing it and leaving. Harry waited until he was sure they were gone before raiding the kitchen for something to eat for breakfast sense there was none of the food he cooked left. The Dursleys had purposely not bought groceries in a while so that there would only be a little food in the house while they were gone and Harry wouldn't be able to pig out. But by Harry's estimation there was enough to get him through the week while still eating better then he would have if they were home.
Having eaten and washed the dishes Harry wondered into the living room and turned on the telly. He really didn't feel like watching anything but he thought that it would be better to stare at then the wall in his room. He filliped through the channels until he landed on a documentary on birds and then settled down to watch. It wasn't long before Harry's head started to nod and he slipped into sleep.
Harry ran through the Ministry of Magic desperately searching each room for the man who had come to mean so much to him. The man was family, the only family that Harry claimed, and he was in trouble! Harry had to find him and get him out safely. Harry searched three more rooms before there was a shimmer and he found himself standing in the Vale room. He looked up just in time to see Bellatrix cast the curse that sent Sirius through the vale. Harry cried out as he watched his godfather fall through the vale. Then the scene shifted and Harry was standing staring down the length of his wand shouting the curse that hit his godfather and threw him through the silver curtain and ended his life. The room whited out and Harry stood alone in the blank space glancing around to try to spot anything in the emptiness. Harry didn't know how long he was in the white place before a voice behind him caused him to jump and jerk around.
“Why Harry? Why couldn't you have stayed out of trouble a few more weeks? It was a trap Harry, why couldn't you see that? It was obvious! I died because you couldn't stay out of trouble! Hell, if you had only taken your mental shield training seriously I could still be alive!” Sirius's voice rang out from the emptiness though when Harry turn to look for him he wasn't in sight.
“Sirius I'm sorry! I thought you were hurt and in trouble! Please you have to believe me, I didn't want to loose you! You were like a father to me, the only family I truly care about.” Harry called back, hoping that his godfather would believe him.
“Ha! I broke out of prison to protect you and ended up living a life on the run because you let the traitor get away!” The voice was full of distance and anger. “Because you let Wormtail get away Voldemort was brought back to power! People have died because of you. Everyone he killed is on you! Cedric's death was your fault.”
“No!” Shouted in denial but the voice just kept on talking, telling him how worthless he was and how everything was his fault. Harry tried to cover his ears but the voice sounded in his head and couldn't be blocked.
Harry jerked upright, panting for breath as the backfiring car that woke him continued its noisy way down the street. He rubbed his hands over his face and glanced at the wall clock and grunted in surprise when he realized that he had actually gotten five hours of sleep. Harry glanced at the telly that was still on before standing, switching it off and leaving the living room for his bed room. He wasn't in the mood any more.Harry entered the room and walked over to Hedwig in her cage. The Snowy owl looked up at him with intelligent eyes and hooted softly. Harry smiled softly and stuck his fingers through the bars of her cage to gently stroke her breast feathers.
“Hey girl.” His smile turned sad and wistful, “I don't really know how much longer I can deal with these dreams. Any time I close my eyes they are there waiting for me and they make the sleep I get useless.”
Hedwig hooted softly and leaned forward to nibble his fingers. Harry petted her for a little while longer before giving her a few of owl treats and leaving to start the list of chores.
The next two days passed pretty normally, or as normal things had been sense his Godfather had died. Harry went moment by moment and chore by chore to keep from thinking and feeling, the world was an exhausted haze around him and it was all he could do to keep moving. The chore list was already halfway done due to the fact that Harry was using the chores as a way to keep from sleeping. So it was that the day before his birthday arrived and Harry decided that, for the lack of anything else to do, he was going to make himself a good meal out of the scraps left by his relatives to celebrate. He raided the freezer, frig, and pantry to find enough to make a decent meal for one. Not really caring that it might leave him short on food for the rest of the week.
It was while he was peeling the slightly wilted potatoes that it happened. The knife slipped and the blade hit his wrist. It took a moment but as Harry watched a red line appeared and began to run down his arm. Staring transfixed Harry just watched as the ruby liquid seeped out of his arm and for a moment he wondered if it was the answer to everything. To the pain and the fear. Could the hopelessness of his life and future be remedied by such a simple action as a knife cut firmly placed across his wrists?
He remembered all that had taken place as far back as he could remember, the harsh treatment at the hands of his 'loving family', the bullying of the other children in primary thanks to his cousin, the way that the wizard population expected him to be perfect just because he was 'The-Boy-Who-Lived', the expectation of him being the hero and always saving the day, the reaction to his news of the return of Voldemort, and the loss of the only family that had loved him. Sirius's death replayed in his mind and the knife moved closer to his wrist. The thought that had him placing the knife against his skin was that even if he did as was prophesied and killed Voldemort he would never have a normal life, one where he could just be Harry. He would always be Harry Potter The-Boy-Who-Lived' and the wizarding world would always look to him to be their hero.
Harry was just starting to put pressure on the blade when a blood curling shriek rang out through the house causing Harry to jump and pull the blade away from his wrist. The shrieking went on and on as Harry realized with horror what he had almost done. Throwing the knife away from himself and toward the sink Harry spun on his heel and ran out of the kitchen and up the stairs to his bed room where Hedwig was shrieking and throwing her self against the bars of her cage in a desperate attempt to reach her master before it was to late. Harry hurried to her and yanked the cage door open, not even realizing that it should have been locked. The moment the door was open Hedwig forced her way out and onto his shoulder where she punished him for scaring her by beating him about the head with her wings.
Harry ducked his head in an attempt to protect it as he did his best to calm her down. “Hedwig it's okay. I'm okay. Please calm down. Please!”
With one last outraged shriek Hedwig settled with her feathers puffed out to their fullest to let him know that she wasn't done being mad at him yet. With her calmed if not placated Harry was able to take a moment to grab an old shirt to deal with the blood from the nick of the knife slip and to keep pressure on the cut while he dug out the small tub of healing cream from his trunk. The tub was a standard item in most first aid kits sold to wizarding families, which is how Harry came to have it. A small dab swiped across the cut stopped the bleeding and sealed the cut. Then with the adrenalin receding as things calmed down Harry's knees gave out and he found him self on the floor quite suddenly causing Hedwig to give a disgruntled hoot and flap her wings to keep balanced.
Harry didn't know how long he sat there trying to come to terms with the fact that he had just came as close to death as he had ever been and it had been at his own hands. He had faced a Dark Wizard so terrible that people wouldn't speak his name, and man eating monsters that hadn't come as close to killing him as he had just been to killing himself. Looking around his room he started to feel trapped and that the walls were closing in on him. He needed to get out of the room and the house itself. He also needed some one to talk to. Thinking it over there was a single option open to him, and with his uncle out of town it should be safe to go and see what happens. Harry grabbed his invisibility cloak and threw it over Hedwig and himself before sneaking out the back door and over the back fence to avoid the guard before heading to the nearby park.
Harry entered the park and made his way past the playground equipment and headed toward the wooded area on the far end. As he walked he remembered his first trip to the wooded area and smiled. He had been running from Dudley and his friends who were playing their 'Hunt Harry' game and he knew from observing that they didn't like the wooded area in the back of the park so he hoped that if he made it into the trees he would be safe. He had just made it passed the tree line when the group of bullies entered the park. Harry crouched down behind a bush and watched the bullies search the park top to bottom, but never even glancing at the stand of trees. They seemed to know he was near by, even if they couldn't find him, so they settled down on the equipment to wait.Harry could tell that they would be there for a while so he decided to push deeper into the trees to see what was there. Making sure to walk as quietly as possible he walked deeper and deeper into the trees and soon the quiet animal noises and the beauty of nature itself had entranced the boy who knew little beyond the house he grew up in. Harry wondered from tree to tree touching the bark of the trunk and staring up among the branches, some times he even managed to glimpse the birds whose songs filled the air. As Harry passed among the trees his face covered in a look of awe and his smile huge he never noticed that he should have passed through the stand of trees long ago.
Harry eventually decided to take a small break and he sat down under what had to be the biggest tree he had seen yet. He had only been seated for a couple of minutes when a soft voice spoke to him from the far side of the tree.
“You are the first in a long time to visit my tree. The awe you've shown in my small stand of trees is humbling and makes the effort I put into protecting them worth it.” The speaker had circled the tree to stand before Harry as she spoke and what he saw had him catching his breath. Even as a seven year old Harry could tell that the woman who stood before him was inhumanly beautiful. She was tall and willowy with a curtain of strait obsidian hair that was so long it pooled at her feet. Her sapphire eyes watched him from a face that seemed to contain an inner light that gave her pale skin a moonlight like glow.“Tell me little one, what is your name and why have you ventured so far into my domain?”
“I'm...I'm Harry. Harry Potter and I enter the trees to escape my cousin and his friends who are bullies. When they decided to stay on the playground I decided to explore the trees some while waiting for them to leave.” Harry gulped. “I hope you don't mind, the trees and plants are really beautiful and it is really peaceful here.”
The woman smiled and stepped over and sat down by Harry. “You are more than welcome among these trees child. Anyone who appreciates the trees the way you have this past afternoon is more than welcome in my domain. Unfortunately too few people see nature as anything but a chance to make money these days and I don't get many visitors any more.”
Harry smiled, “I will come and visit you all the time! We can be friends and tell each other secrets!” Then Harry's smile wilted a little before he continued. “That is if you want to be my friend. I'd understand if you didn't. People say that I'm weird or not normal, so if you don't want to be friends that's fine. But maybe I could still come to visit?”
The woman frowned and Harry's heart fell. “I think that it would be lovely to be your friend, and you are always welcome beneath my tree.”
Harry grinned and the two of them had spent the rest of the afternoon learning about each other. Harry had learn that the woman was named Bree and that she was a member of the Fae and that it was her job to protect the trees around her tree. In return Harry told Bree about being left on his aunt and uncles door step and how his cousin uses him as a punching bag. They talked until Harry started to worry about getting into trouble for being out to late and Bree lead him back to within sight of the tree line.
“Harry, no matter what happens you are always welcome here.”
Harry had visited her often over the next few months, but he hadn't been careful enough and Dudley had found out that Harry was meeting some one he considered a friend. Dudley had told Vernon and he had beaten Harry for talking to other freaks like him and told him that if he even thought that he was visiting the freak in the woods the beating he would get then would be three times as bad as the one he had just gotten. On top of the threat of another beating Vernon added that if he went into the trees again he would burn the stand to the ground. In fear for his friend Harry never again went to visit Bree under her tree, until today at least. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
