"You have to report this, Harry." Hermione pleaded, sitting next to the friend that was as close to a brother as she was ever going to get, referring to the punishment inflicted upon Harry by Professor Umbridge. "It's barbaric. You have to tell Dumbledore."
"No. Dumbledore has enough to deal with. It's fine." He replied, his nose still stuck in the book he was scribbling in.
"It's not fine, Harry." She said with some vehemence in her voice. It was abhorrent that a Professor would diliberately inflict pain on a student as penance for speaking the truth in her classroom. "It's perfectly simple. You--" But Harry cut her off, his tone less than friendly.
"No it's not, Hermione. Whatever this is, it's not simple. You don't understand."
"Then help us to." Hermione pleaded in just above a whisper. Harry was her very best friend, her brother even, despite the fact that they shared no blood ties, and she wanted to help him.
"Leave it be, Hermione." He said angrily. "As a matter of fact, leave me alone." And with that, he gave her his back and stormed out of the commonroom, Ron trailing behind him. What the bloody hell was that? Hermione thought to herself as she sat there, bewildered and more than just a little hurt. Leave him alone? What's going on with him? Heading up to her dorm, she decided to work on her homework. She was already two weeks ahead on it but she liked to stay at least three weeks ahead and she still had a week's worth to go. Plus, it would take her mind off the unusual comment from Harry. He'll come back and apologize later. He always does when he's in a mood. She thought to herself as she opened her Advanced Potions book and emersed herself in her studies.
It was three and a half hours later when she finally finished her four rolls of parchment on the effects of the Black Fire Potion, its ingredients, and how it's brewed. Packing up her assignments, Hermione headed down to the commonroom, only to stop in her tracks halfway down the stairs.
"Bossy, know-it-all bitch. Thinks she has the answer to everything. Sometimes I wish she would just shut the hell up and leave me bloody well alone!" Harry's voice carried up to where she was standing, stunned at her friend's less than flattering opinion of her.
"And she's always 'I read it in a book.' If she read it in a book then it has to be true. Bloody bookworm, always concerned with her studies and her grades. No wonder nobody likes her." It was Ron this time, his tone sarcastic and a little malicious. She was floored by the vehemence with which they spoke so callously of her. And these were supposed to be her friends! She swallowed the urge to cry and instead, squared her shoulders and cleared her throat. Both boys looked up, a look of disgust mirrored on both their faces. The nerve of them! They didn't even care that she'd heard them, didn't even care enough to look chagrined at the fact that they'd been caught bashing their friend who'd been there for them through everything, who'd risked her life time and time again to save their skins. The thought, coupled with the looks on their faces ignited her anger like never before and she stormed down the remaining stairs and over to them, her wand out and trained on the two people who she thought were her friends.
"You foul, loathsome little gits!" She said, her voice deathly calm. "After everything I've done for you, after I've saved your dimwitted arses countless times, after I've RISKED MY LIFE FOR YOU, and this is what you think of me? You two are worse than Malfoy! At least when he talks foul about me, he has the decency to do it to my face!" The air crackled around her, her magic flaring and causing her hair to wave in a breeze that wasn't there. She glanced back and forth between the two boys and a sardonic smile graced her features. "Since you're both so keen on speaking poorly about me, perhaps you shouldn't speak at all. "LANGLOCK!" She said calmly, but the magic crackling around her put more force into the spell than she'd anticipated and both Harry and Ron went flying over the back of the couch, spilling onto the floor with their tongues firmly attached to the roof of their mouths. "There. That'll teach you to talk nasty about one of your friends." And without another word, she headed for the portrait hole. She was stopped, however, by Seamus. "Dumbledore is looking for you. He says it's urgent." He sounds winded, as if he'd run to the commonroom straight from wherever he'd been. "Oh and he said to tell you that he loves Wizzing Fizbees this time of year, for some reason." Seamus shook his head, obviously trying to figure out why he'd tell him that after such an urgent message, as he made his way into Gryffindor Tower.
Hermione wasted no time getting to the entrance to Dumbledore's office. "Wizzing Fisbees" She said clearly to the gargoyle guarding the headmaster's office and was quickly granted entrance. Dumbledore sat behind his desk, the usual twinkle gone from his eye and a morose look coloring his expression. "Please, have a seat Miss Granger." He said quietly.
"I prefer to stand, sir." She replied politely. "You said this was urgent?"
"Yes, Miss Granger, I did." And the tone of his voice sent a frission of dread through her, causing her body to tremble slightly and her hands twisted together in front of her. "I am most aggrieved to be the one to tell you this, Miss Granger, but I'm afraid Lord Voldemort has found your parents."
"My...my parents?" Tears came unbidden, streaming down her cheeks as she feared the worst. "Are they.....are they......" She couldn't bring herself to say the words. Her most frightening nightmares come to life. They couldn't be dead. They just couldn't be. Her knees buckled beneath her and she grasped the back of the nearest chair and sat to keep from falling.
"No, dear child. They're still very much alive. But I fear their situation is much worse than death." He paused for a moment to regard her over his half-moon spectacles. "They've been taken captive by Voldemort. They're being held hostage." He paused once more, waiting for her to absorb what he's said. Her intellect does not disappoint. "Hostage? Like for ransom? What could he possibly gain by taking my parents? Harry doesn't even know them! And shouldn't you be telling this to him?" She omits the part about how she and Harry may not even be friends anymore. And then it dawns on her. If Dumbledore thought Voldemort wanted to get to Harry through her parents, he would have told Harry. Voldemort's not after Harry. "He wants.....me." She answered quietly, then promptly fainted.
