Chapter One: Hello, Again
Sunshine danced softly into the office of Rose Weasley in the early hours of September the 1st as she snored while her head rested on her arms which were splayed on a cluttered stack of paper. A small bit of drool was hanging out of her mouth, and a rather persistent paper airplane was repeatedly bouncing off of her head. Slowly, as if her dream had been rather wonderful, Rose seemed to be awoken by the constant tapping of paper. Without lifting her head, she reached up and clutched the paper in her hand.
Her body ached as it always did when she woke up this way, slumped over her desk, exhausted. She woke this way more often than not. Fighting the urge to go back to sleep, Rose pulled her body up all the way in her chair, shoving the many loose strands of curly red hair out of her face, and read the letter.
R,
Had an incident this morning in London. Meet with the DoMLE immediately for assist.
B.
She rolled her eyes. Her boss, Benjamin Wimsby, was not one for lengthy letters or really any details at all. She had been working with him for five years and she could not recall a single letter that she had received that was over three sentences in length. She found that the best practice was to prepare for the worst when he sent her out to take care of something and then she wouldn’t be caught unaware.
Rose pulled herself out of her chair and walked over to the small closet in her office. She pulled out a fresh set of clothes, muggle attire as she probably would have to go out today, and got dressed. She wore a pair of black slacks and a dark green button down shirt. Her hair she fixed with a few wand movements and several clips, and her teeth she brushed in the small sink next to the closet. She wasn’t the only member of the Department of Mysteries that rarely slept at home. Nearly all of their offices had closets and sinks, and a small couch like the one sitting against one wall of her office. They had access to a full kitchen and a bathroom with a shower as well. Sometimes she would go days without heading home.
After washing her face, Rose pocketed her wand and set off. She took the lift from level nine to level two. It was early enough that she only stopped once to let some of the interdepartmental memos off and one elderly witch on. Rose smiled kindly at her as she stepped off the lift and into the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. Even at this hour it was a buzz with excitement. Rose knew of several Aurors that didn’t go home any more than she did.
“Rose!” She grinned broadly as she heard Harry before she saw him. He emerged from behind the crowd and hugged her.
“Hey, Uncle Harry!” She kissed his cheek and held up the scrap from Ben. “Wimsby sent me.”
“Yea, Yea.” He turned around and headed back into the maze of cubicles, beckoning her to follow him. “We had a routine call over night. Just some crazy old loon who was pulling a Moody, but when our guys got there and went in the house they found a bloody load of things you wouldn’t even believe, Rose.”
“Great…” She shook her head and sighed heavily. She had seen so many dangerous and careless things since joining the Department of Mysteries. It was amazing to her that the world still existed. No one really enjoyed working with her department and they were only called in when something really shady showed up. She knew that Harry wouldn’t have asked them to be part of this unless they needed to be there.
“I sent an owl to Wimsby as soon as they reported back to me. I knew I needed one of his group in on this.”
“Harry! Can you look at this …” A small man started to ask her Uncle, but he shook his head and kept moving.
“Not now! Get it to me later.” The man pulled the packet back immediately and nodded. Harry was good at his job and he ran the Department well. His staff respected him and they knew when to leave him alone.
As they reached his office Harry turned around and shook his head one last time before opening the door. “He’s in here, first on the scene.” He pushed the door open and she stopped dead, her mouth dropped open. “Scorpius Malfoy.”
She didn’t need Harry to tell her who Scorpius Malfoy was. They had gone to school together for seven years. He was Harry’s son’s best friend. They had been prefects and then Head Boy and Girl together. They had been ... Well ... So much more than that.
She pulled her chin up and walked into the room, hoping that neither man had noticed her surprise. Scorpius set down the picture he had been holding of Harry and Ginny and looked up at her. She saw a moment of surprise and shock flash behind his silver eyes as well and then he reached out a hand. “Rose, good to see you.” She looked at his outstretched hand and then back up at him. He looked great. His blonde hair was shorter than it had been when they left Hogwarts. His eyes were locked on her, his emotions hidden behind steel. He was a few inches taller and slightly broader than he had been five years ago. She reached her hand out and grabbed his. A shiver ran up her arm and into her shoulder as her body betrayed her with it’s memory of what it felt .
“Good to see you too.”
“Why do you have to be so bloody stubborn all the time, Rose?” They were supposed to be doing rounds. Routine. Easy. But nothing was ever easy when it involved the two of them. Nothing.
“Why do you have to be so bloody defiant? It’s a rounds schedule! It isn’t that difficult! We just do what it says and then we get to go to bed!” She knew he was only being this way because he'd been stuck with her. He just wanted to drive her crazy and he knew that he could. If she had been anyone else, he would have been done by now.
“Then why can’t we just do it the way it says on the paper? It says the greenhouse then the lake! We're the Prefects, we set the standards!"
“Rose Weasley! Do you follow every rule? Do you toe every line?" He sounded as exasperated as she felt and she couldn't understand why when he was the one being difficult. He was making issues where there was no issue!
“Yes ! Of Course !” Rose knew what she wanted. She was going to work in the Department of Mysteries and she wasn't going to let Scorpius Malfoy or Prefect rounds get in her way. She was in her fifth year and on the track to becoming Head Girl. She had top marks and intended to ace her O.W.L.S and N.E.W.T.S and then she would be a shoe in. She had grown up listening to her parents and their friends talk about the Department of Mysteries and she had never wanted to do anything else. She had family in just about every department at the Ministry of Magic, but when she succeeded she would be the first.
Scorpius laughed. It wasn’t a cruel laugh, but instead a laugh that said that he completely believed her. “You know what, Rose? Sometimes it’s fun to break the rules.” And then he moved so quickly she barely registered what was happening until his hands were in her long, red hair and his mouth was over hers. He kissed her fervently, begging her to respond. She was in such shock at first that she stood there lost in his mouth, but once she realized what he was doing she found that she quite enjoyed the feeling of her lips tingling under his. In one shameful moment, she melted into him a little bit, pushing against his mouth with her own. Another minute later she realized this was precisely the behavior they were there to patrol for and she pulled back from him, ashamed.
When she looked at him he seemed surprised. "You aren't half bad at that, Weasley." She blushed and pushed her hair behind her ear. He was her first kiss.
"Please don't do that again. We are supposed to be doing our rounds." Her mind was running a thousand miles a minute. Why had he kissed her? What did he want from her? Was it really just a stunt about breaking rules?
Scorpius lifted his eyes to the ceiling, exasperated. "Oh, Rose! I just kissed you and you want to talk about rounds?! Fine. We will do greenhouses and then the lake. Happy?" He didn't give her a chance to responded. He stalked off towards the greenhouses leaving her to trial behind, a single finger moving over her still tingling lips.
She came out of her daydream with her finger in her lips. Scorpius was say something about a back market time turner and she was staring at the floor dumbly.
"Rose?" Harry asked and she looked at him.
"Sorry, I ... Just remembered something." She glanced at Scorpius, but he wasn't meeting her eye.
"Can we continue?"
"Yes, Scorpius, please, I'm sorry." She looked at him squarely and waited.
"No problem, as I was saying, I entered the residence expecting to find a few knock off gadgets, but this stuff was some serious magic. We need to find out if this guy made it himself or what. I'm sure you know more about it and can figure out what it's all capable of, but it all seem just bad to me. From everything I've studied, he seemed to be trying to make a time turner." Scorpius handed her an image. Her fingertips touched the back of his hand and it shook for just a moment as he let go.
She wanted to know why he was here and what he was doing. She had avoided talking to Al about him. It was pretty easy when she lived at the office and Al lived for quidditch. They rarely talked these days and when they did it was to catch up on each other, not Scorpius. She would have thought she'd have heard something about this though.
She looked down at the picture and stared for a minute. "Well, just looking at it it appears pretty legitimate. This could be extremely dangerous. Where is all of this stuff? What did you do with it?"
"Still at the house. I was worried about moving it here. I don't know what it's capable of."
"Good. Let me grab a couple things and I'll head out there."
"Malfoy head out there with her. Help in any way you can. I want this resolved quickly and quietly."
"That's the only way we do things Harry." She told him with a smile while Scorpius said, "Yes, sir." She tried not to think about him or his shocked eyes or his shaking hand as she turned about and headed for the door. It was going to be a long day.
They walked towards the lift and the buzz around them seemed to have grown louder even in the short time she had been in Harry's office. Scorpius stood beside her in the lift, not speaking. There were two other wizards that got on with them and a steady flow off and on as the moved towards level nine. She led the way when the doors opened. As they walked to her office, she nodded and greeted a couple of her colleagues. She opened the door to her office with a flick of her wand and held the door for him, following him inside.
He walked in slowly, taking a few steps before he stopped to look around as she shut the door behind her. She wasn't sure if that was smart or not, but she did it anyway. She stood there right in front of the door and stared at him, no longer trying to hide her emotions, no longer concerned with who would see what. This was Scorpius Malfoy standing in front of her. They were alone for the first time in five years.
He let his eyes float around the room, pausing for a long moment on a flower that had been charmed to look like a Phoenix. His eyes moved directly to her after he saw it. "Rose .." He faltered, words failing him.
"I ..." She tried and also failed. Instead she took a step towards him, and then another. She reached him slowly and she hesitated before she wrapped her arms around him and laid her head on his chest. He pulled her in tighter and she found that she had started crying. His heart was beating fast and his hands were in her hair.
"Rose." He said again, speaking into her hair. She pulled back and wiped her cheeks with her hands. "I missed you." He told her.
"I was such a cow. You shouldn't have." She told him.
"You were a bit of a cow." They both laughed and he looked at the Phoenix again. "You kept it?"
"I told you I would." She was so very, very glad that his other presence in the room was hidden away where he couldn't see it.
"I just expected you to have gotten rid of it."
"I missed you too." She said softly, her whisper barely loud enough for him to hear. "Scor ..."
He turned back to look at her and she wanted to kiss him. If she was honest with herself she had wanted to kiss him the moment she had seen him in Harry's office. She closed the small space between them and reached up to touch his cheek. He grabbed her hand and gave her a soft smile. “Rose … I …”
“It’s okay.” She stepped back and moved over to her desk to grab her bag. “We should go.”
