Disclaimer: I do not own 'Harry Potter' or any characters from it. I do not make any moey from the writing of this story. |
This story begins after the Fall of the Ministry of Magic, although there are many recollections from the perspective of the main character - Lilla, whom you won't find it the original story. She is my own creation. The story focuses not only on her, though, but also on Scabior, whom you may know well from the books and movies.
To put it briefly, whatever relationship there is between them, it is not an easy one. Why? I encourage you to see for yourselves :)
I'm sorry for any incoherencies or incosistencies with the original story. I hope you won't find them disturbing and I also hope you will enjoy reading my story :)
She was striding along the corridor at the Ministry, exchanging hellos and smiles with other employees. Smiling, she tried to conceal the uneasiness in her stomach.
‘Had a rough night?’ she heard a voice behind her. She spun around to see a stout man smiling friendly at her.
‘Shut up,’ she murmured, but couldn’t stop a smile crooking her lips. She prodded the man when he walked past her. He pulled a face, pretending to be deeply offended . The woman laughed before her colleague disappeared behind the corner.
She walked into her office and closed the door. She came up to a small mirror hanging on one of the walls. He was right. She looked like a mess. Dark circles under her eyes, dishevelled hair, and the face lost its normal hue, looking slightly greyish.
The amount of Firewhisky last night was much too much.
She sat down at the desk, rubbing her face with both hands.
Merlin’s fucking beard, will this nausea ever stop?
She wondered how much work she would have today. Hopefully not much, so she could go home earlier.
The door opened suddenly and the woman straightened up immediately, raising a fake smile.
Her stomach protested.
A wrinkled, honest face appeared in the doorway. The man grinned, seeing her somewhat doubtful condition, showing his astonishingly white teeth.
‘Morning, sweetheart. Are you feeling alright?’ he asked in a joking tone.
The woman smirked, breathing deeply to settle down the queasiness.
‘Of course I’m fine, Arnold. What makes you think otherwise?’ she asked, deliberately swaying slightly from side to side.
The man named Arnold burst out laughing and waved a hand at her.
‘Come on, Lilla, we have a job to do. We have been reported that quite a number of Muggles claimed to see a car flying in the air and then disappearing from the sky, just like that,’ he snapped his fingers.
‘What is more,’ he continued, ‘someone from the Beast Division was seen trying to bring a dragon down the street.’
Lilla couldn’t hide her amusement.
‘A flying car? A dragon? Are you serious?’
The man shrugged, raising his eyebrows.
‘We need to check it anyway.’
‘And let me guess,’ Lilla said in a mock-wondering tone, ‘we are about to pay a visit to these Muggles and make them forget everything they saw?’
The man nodded.
‘And hurry up, it seems we’ll have quite a lot of work today.’
The door closed behind him.
Lilla dropped the smile and laid her head on the desk, moaning.
That would be it when it came to coming home earlier. It seemed she would have to do some overtime.
She should have probably just taken a day off.
Lilla shook her head, returning to reality from the world of her memories. She was now sitting in the Forest of Dean on a cool early spring evening, wrapping her arms around her to warm herself just a little. The memory she had just brought up caused her to smile melancholically. Things had changed so much that coming back to those moments when everything seemed, from the perspective, so simple and easy was a springboard from reality.
Delilah Vollerain was a young witch working at the Ministry of Magic, Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes. She was an Obliviator. Her task was to erase or modify the memory of the Muggles who had, intentionally or not, witnessed magic or became otherwise aware of the existence of the wizard world. The world which, per the Statue of Secrecy, was to remain hidden.
Meddling with one’s memory was a tricky business. Both erasing and implementing a memory was complicated and required a healthy amount of focus. A caster could not get distracted in the process as it might even result in substantial brain damage of the victim.
Erasing or adding memories was a difficult craft. But once done professionally, it was successful and Muggles could live the rest of their days happily ever after, not knowing that right under their noses wizards were working hard not to make themselves noticeable. That’s what the Obliviators were for.
But those happy-go-lucky days became just a memory when Lord Voldemort regained his power.
This news came as a shock to all families of the wizard world.
When Harry Potter staggered out of the labyrinth in the Triwizard Tournament, scared, screaming that Lord Voldemort had returned, many wizards didn’t believe him.
But Albus Dumbledore did. And, as a result, he decided to reactivate the Order of the Phoenix, a secret society whose job was now to protect Harry, oppose the Dark Lord and protect those he was about to persecute. Lilla didn’t have to think twice about joining it. Her parents were members of the First Order and had always trusted Dumbledore. Lilla always knew Dumbledore would never lie about such a serious matter, although there were rumours in the Ministry that Cornelius Fudge, the Minister at that time, was scared shitless that Dumbledore just wanted to replace him.
For Lilla, it felt ridiculous. But from that moment on, the Ministry was doing everything possible to maintain its reputation and convince wizards that Dumbledobre and Potter were just liars, looking for fame and splendour.
Another ridiculous assumption. If it wasn’t for the Order, she would have quitted her job at that time. But spying for the Order was keeping her in place, as she was bringing up various news from the Ministry.
So the Order had to work underground, trying to convince witches and wizards of what the Ministry was trying to conceal – that Lord Voldemort was back.
And now she was hiding in the woods with Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, trying to keep them all safe. Or alive, at least.
