Summary: ABC stories starring our favorite characters. Some letters/chapters will be longer than ever. Most of the relationships will be Drarry or Snarry. Some might be a few surprises.
Note: This letter-story-chapter-whatever ignores a few of the deaths in the books, including Snape and Dumbledore.
A is for AwareHe didn’t notice it at first. But as the new year progressed, Draco started to notice that something was off with the prized Savior of the Wizarding World. After the War, Potter had returned to school like most of their year-mates, but the other two-thirds of the Golden Trio had not. Weasley had gone straight into Auror training and Granger was apprenticing in some department at the Ministry. Rumor was they were now engaged, too. This left Potter alone with girls he barely spoke to and male year-mates who were in relationships.Draco wouldn’t have even noticed anything if it he hadn’t stopped to use the bathroom after Arithmancy. He was exiting a stall when he looked up and spotted Potter standing at the sink. He stood where he could see Potter, but the Gryffindor couldn’t see him. He was shocked to see the other male’s nose bleeding and quite heavily, at that. Potter stared at his reflection for a few seconds before grabbing some paper towels and stopping the blood flow.Draco had stepped further out of sight and watched as the brunette cast a small healing spell and cleaned himself off. The bloody nose didn’t make any sense. The Slytherin had passed the Gryffindor in the hall only fifteen minutes ago. How could the male had sustained such an injury in such a short amount of time? After that, Draco kept a very close eye on the Gryffindor. He noticed a lot more. Potter appeared more tired on Monday’s and was rarely seen on the weekends. In classes that they shared, Potter didn’t volunteer any answers, but still managed to cast spells required of him. In Potions, he didn’t react to anything Snape said. Hell, his Godfather could have brought back the Dark Lord in the middle of the classroom and Potter would maybe blink. It was getting close to Halloween when Draco finally decided to confront the Gryffindor. After sneaking up to the Gryffindor Tower, Draco managed to sweet talk the portrait into telling him where Potter was.“He’s not here. The poor lad left. It looked like he was walking towards the Astronomy Tower,” the fat lady said.Draco smiled. “Thank you.”Drawing his wand out, Draco said Point me and followed the direction the wand led him. Sure enough it let him up the stairs to the Astronomy Tower. Quietly pushing the door open, Draco spotted Harry sitting on a window. He was sitting sideways with his back against the stone and one of his legs stretched out across the windowsill. The other leg hung down on the inside while his head was craned back, staring up at the stars above. In all honesty, Draco thought he looked lonely. He took a few steps into the room before Potter’s voice stopped him cold.“I’m not in the mood, Malfoy. Please go away,” Harry mumbled while lowering his head.Draco tilted his head while stepping closer. The use of his first name was a new one.“You haven’t been much in the mood for anything. What’s going on with you, Harry?” Draco asked.Harry visibly startled with the use of his first name. He obviously hadn’t been expecting that one. Draco crossed the remaining space between them until he was only a couple of feet away.“Surprised you, hmm? I was hoping I would,” Draco said.Harry stared down at the floor as he swung around to face Draco. He planted his feet on the ground, but Draco’s hands clamped down on his shoulders, preventing him from standing up. Harry closed his eyes with a grimace. He turned his head away from the blonde wizard. Draco narrowed his gaze. He could feel the brunette shaking underneath his hands. But it’s not cold up here, Draco thought.Taking a deep breath, Draco lowered his head to lean his forehead down on surprisingly soft brown hair.“You haven’t been the same Potter I’ve known since First Year. Something’s changed. And don’t say it’s because the war’s over, because that’s utter bollocks,” Draco murmured. The body under his shook as Harry gave a small, dry chuckle. Draco contemplated how to word his next statement – his question – until he just decided to come out and say it.“Is someone hurting you?”Harry breathed out a big sigh and a barely audible, “Yes.” Harry wrapped his arms around himself with a small whimper. Draco brought a hand down under Harry’s arm to pull him up. He pulled the Gryffindor into his arms for a warm hug. Harry let out a sharp cry, forcing Draco to jerk his arms down and he stepped back.Harry was in near tears and clutching his side. Draco glanced down then back up at his face.“Show me.”It was a plea more than anything else. Harry reached down and pulled up his shirt. Draco bit back a curse as a monster-size bruise was revealed to his eyes. It was so dark and covered so much skin that the blonde wizard was shocked the wizard could even breathe. When he looked up, he found Harry’s eyes squeezed shut and a fresh stream of tears coursing down his cheeks.Draco pulled him gently back into his arms, whispering quietly to him. Harry sobbed into his shirt while drawing comfort from the warm hold. After Harry finally calmed down, Draco managed to convince him to allow someone to look at the bruise.“You’re having a hard time breathing, aren’t you?” Draco had whispered.Taking in a ragged breath, Harry had admitted he was. Harry refused to go to the infirmary where the new mediwitch was. Surprisingly, the Gryffindor didn’t protest when Draco guided him down through the castle and to the dungeons. By some miracle, they didn’t come across anyone on the way down.Draco led Harry through the Potions classroom and through the professor’s office to a secret passage that led back into the man’s rooms. Draco didn’t seem surprised the older wizard wasn’t there. Pulling away, Harry crawled onto a large armchair and curled up into a loose ball. He closed his eyes and leaned his forehead against his knees. He barely heard Malfoy cast a patronus and send it to call his Godfather.Severus arrived a short time later, having been outside harvesting some potion ingredients from the greenhouses. He stopped short in the doorway at the sight of his godson and his godson’s rival curled up together in his favorite armchair. At first glance, nothing looked amiss, but upon further inspection, Severus realized how wrong he was.Potter was curled up, making himself as small as possible. Draco held him on his lap, carding a hand through his hair and murmuring softly to him. Draco’s gaze snapped up as he approached.“We need to show him.”Harry didn’t unbury his face from Draco’s chest, but he did drop his arm and allow Draco to pull up the bottom of his shirt. Severus mouthed a whole string of curses when he saw the bruise.No. This gigantic discoloration on skin could not possibly be considered a bruise. It looked much worse than that. Drawing his wand out, Severus cast diagnostic spells. He was surprised when they rebounded. He found it was due to a medallion Harry wore about his neck.“Mr. Potter, can you remove that?” Severus asked.Another shock came when Harry shook his head. He opened his mouth to say something when Draco shot him a sharp look.“Uncle Severus, I think you misunderstood him,” Draco said.Severus raised a silent eyebrow. Draco turned his head and gaze downwards.“Harry? You can’t take it off…can you?” Draco asked.A shaky nod confirmed the blonde’s suspicions. Severus immediately stood to his feet and went to the fireplace. A few floo calls later and more people now invaded Severus’ quarters. Dumbledore and McGonagall were down from McGonagall’s office and Lucius and Shacklebolt from the Ministry. It took the combined spellwork of Dumbledore and McGonagall to carefully break the chain around Harry’s neck. Soon as the necklace was off, Draco was nearly thrown over the back of the couch when he found himself a lapful of Gryffindor again. Through the sobbing, the whole sordid story spilled out.Ginny. War. Family deaths. Manipulative. Emotional abuse. Mental abuse. Physical abuse.“Mr. Potter, I need to show them the bruise,” Severus told him, kneeling back down at the young wizards’ sides.Professor McGonagall gasped. “Bruise? What bruise?!”/……/
Draco grabbed a washcloth and ran it over his face. It had been a long night. He had never seen McGonagall so pissed in all his years of knowing the Head of the Gryffindor House. It almost made him feel sorry for the Weasley bint. Almost.
Draco dried off his face with a fresh towel, turned off the lights, and left the bathroom. He crawled into his Slytherin bed and pulled the thin sheet up to his bare abdomen. He turned on to his side and curled up to the body in his bed. Harry made a small hmm sound in his sleep but settled when Draco whispered softly to him. Harry sighed before nuzzling his face into his pillow and drifting back to sleep.Draco curled his arms around the smaller wizard, his one hand coming down to rest over the newly healed patch of skin. The little Gryffindor had been unwilling to leave him and the professors had permitted him to stay the night. Draco had brought him back to his private room in Slytherin. The blonde Slytherin had let him shower while he sent a house elf to retrieve some fresh clothes for Harry. The sleepy Gryffindor had later stumbled out of the bathroom with his hair sticking up everywhere. The sight had been too hard to resist; the Slytherin had fallen over laughing his head off. The little Gryffindor made it worse when he pouted. And to think? If he hadn’t been so aware of his surroundings, things may have been much worse for the Gryffindor. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
