Chapter 1
Sirius POV
Having just excused myself from the most boring conversation ever, I went outside to get some fresh air. My mother had insisted on my presence for her annual fundraiser for St Mungo’s. According to her I simply had to be there, as oldest son it was my duty, she reminded me, for someday my wife would take over this duty from her. I shuddered at the thought of getting married to a pureblood girl. Most of them were stuck up bitches, who were hug up on pureblood supremacy. Most of them were also brainless, worrying more about what to wear for diner, than anything else.
Having endured a long speech from the hospital’s spokesperson, I was glad to make it outside. I made a beeline for my favourite spot, the bench by the lake. Reaching the bench, I noticed, unsurprised that it was already occupied. Alexandra Zabini had fled the room earlier than me, seeking refugee in the garden as well. She was in my year, but in Ravenclaw. Except for at these functions, I tried to have as little as possible to do with her. Not that she wasn’t a looker, she had straight black hair that reached halfway down her back, violet eyes, a porcelain skin and willowy figure. All of this ensured her of a lot of male attention, even at the age of 14, going on 15. I also knew her to be witty and pretty funny. Just like me, she simply loved to defy her mother, finding the pureblood life a bore. Nonetheless I avoided her at Hogwarts.
My friends would never approve of me being friends with someone in the Zabini family, truthfully, they weren’t as bad as the Malfoys, but Lex’s aunt and uncle were known to be quite close to the dark side. On top of being very pretty, Alexandra was also smart. I knew many of my female classmates envied her.
Also, I happened to notice that she spent a lot of time with Snivellus in the library. This had gotten her on the marauders’ bad side. I myself had been disappointed in her when I noticed. She had even stood up for Snivellus on occasion, daring to go against me. It was the first time anyone except for Evans had stood up to my bullying. I didn’t know why, but it bugged me more than I let on that it was Lex who had stood up for Snivellus. I’d been teasing her about it a great deal this summer, in fact I teased her about it whenever we met.
I sat down next to her, she turned away from me. So it was going to be one of those days? I knew she was mad at me, she had made it clear that she was not going to put up with my behaviour anymore.‘ You know smoking is a bad habit, right?’ I asked as I noticed the pack of smokes in her hand. She glared at me, lighting another cigarette, and blowing the smoke in my face. ‘What’s it to you?’ she asked as she passed me the cigarette.
As I inhaled I answered her question ‘Come on Lex, you know I like you, I just don’t think the others would appreciate our friendship.’
She snorted, and then became quiet once more. ‘Besides’ I continued ‘you lover wouldn’t appreciate it either.’ Now she tuned towards me, an improvement in my opinion. ‘You know he’s not my boyfriend, nor my lover, he’s helping me with potions, and in exchange I’m helping him with arithmancy.’ She had told me this several times, but somehow I didn’t believe it. I knew they had been spending a lot of time outside the library as well. ‘Also, Severus is a very nice person, unlike some, he doesn’t mind being seen with me.’ Her words stung, I knew I should have put in more effort where Lex was concerned. I felt really bad for all the pranks I’d subjected her to while at school.

The back door opened again, and Lex threw her cigarette away, doing a quick air freshener charm, her older cousin Tavio was making his way towards us, scowling. It was clear that he didn’t like to have to fetch Lex. When he reached us, he nodded at me, and turned his attention to Lex ‘your mother wants you to come back inside, they’re leaving.’
Alexandra stood up, and without a second glance, or a parting word to me, went with her cousin.
Somewhere in the back of my head a small voice said ‘this was your last chance to talk to her before school starts’. It was true, it was the last social event before the start of term. Maybe I should try to be her friend at Hogwarts as well, I had never tried, maybe my friends wouldn’t mind as much.
