Hermione stood in front of the mirror in her room, putting the finishing touches on her costume. Tonight was the Malfoy's Annual Halloween Masquerade Charity Ball. Hermione was very excited. Every Halloween, since a year after the war ended, Lucius and Narcissa put on a ball for a wizard charity. This years charity was to help pay for tuition to Hogwarts for children who were orphaned by the war. The Malfoy's were trying to gain back the trust of the Wizarding world. They came up with the charity balls thanks to Severus and Kingsley. They held auctions and then matched the winning bids that were paid by their guests. The balls were a big hit, and the wizarding community seemed to given the Malfoys a second chance.
This year’s theme was leather and lace. Hermione smirked, as she looked at herself in the mirror. The themes have been getting more daring and risqué as the years progressed. That is why no one under the age of seventeen was allowed to attend.
Hermione adjusted her purple lace corset; making sure things were tucked in where they were supposed to be. Hermione loved dressing sexy, but with her busy Ministry job and zero personal life, she didn't get a chance to dress like this often. It was indecent and sexy and Hermione smiled at herself. She pulled on her lace top thigh highs, and smoothed down her leather skirt. She went to her closet and selected her leather thigh high boots. She slipped them on and zipped them up. The lace on her stockings peaked out over the top of her boots.
Hermione wondered what type of auction the Malfoys would have tonight. Lucius and Narcissa kept the auction itself a secret to surprise the guests, and to bring in more people. Last year they auctioned off a weeks stay at a Greek Villa on a private island, all expenses paid, along with antiques and jewelry. Hermione could only imagine what they were going to do this year.
She looked at the clock on her dresser. The ball was in an hour. “Luna should be here any minute,” Hermione thought. Luna and Hermione always went to the ball together. The two had become very close over the years, even at one time sharing Hermione's flat.
Hermione picked up her purple and black lace mask. She slipped it on and looked in the mirror. She hardly recognized herself, which was what she wanted. There was an unspoken rule about not revealing your true identity until after the ball was over. Hermione suspected it was to protect the identity of the people who made larger donations.
There was a knock on the door. Hermione shook her head, “Why does she knock?” Hermione thought as she took one last look in the mirror and went to answer the door. Luna was standing there in leather pants and a purple lace top.
“Oh look we match,” Luna said, pointing to Hermione's purple top.
Hermione laughed. “Maybe we should have discussed our outfits earlier. How many times have I told you, you don't have to knock you can Apparate right in.”
“I don't want to intrude on your privacy,” Luna said.
“You are not intruding, besides I was expecting you tonight.”
Luna ignored her statement. “I wonder who is going to be there tonight.”
“Probably the same people as every year. Maybe one of these years we can get those people to admit that they were there. I think they like not telling us.” Hermione folded her arms.
“But it has been fun speculating.” Luna laughed.
“Okay, are we ready to go?” Hermione said as she opened the door back up.
“Are we Apparating there?” Luna asked.
“No, I decided we need to arrive in style this year.” Hermione smirked.
They stepped outside and a horse and carriage pulled up, almost on cue. Hermione gave Luna a broad smile.
“Very nice. I think this going to be a very fun ball,” Luna said and she looped her arm through Hermione's as they half ran to the carriage.
Hermione's flat was not far from the Manor, so it was a short carriage ride. Hermione and Luna pulled up to Malfoy Manor. The coach stopped by the front door and a uniformed wizard helped them out of the carriage. As they approached the entrance, a house-elf handed them a paper flier.
“Look here they are asking guest to volunteer to be in a date auction,” Hermione said indifferently.
“A date auction! How fun!” Luna exclaimed.
“I don't know about that,” Hermione said, looking over the paper with a furrowed brow.
“Don't you think it would be fun to bid on someone for a date,” Luna said, grabbing onto Hermione's arm and walking into the Manor.
“Sounds kind of desperate,” Hermione said, frowning at the paper still in her hand.
“It's for charity, Hermione,” Luna said, taking the paper from her hand and looking at it before handing it off to another guest.
“Still sounds desperate,” Hermione huffed.
Luna shook her head at her friend. “Let’s get something to drink.”
They headed into the ballroom. The Malfoy's, mainly Narcissa, Hermione suspected, had decorated the room to create a dark and sexy atmosphere. The tables had red and black table clothes covering them. Each table had a crystal pyramid shaped candleholder illuminating just enough of the table to have an intimate conversation, but not enough to make out the details of faces. It added to the mystery of the evening. The wait staff was also dressed in leather and lace. The men wore black leather pants, a white dress shirt that was not buttoned and black leather masks. The women wore short, bright red lace dresses with black leather knee high boots.
“It's hard to tell who is a guest and who was hired to work tonight,” Luna whispered.
“Something tells me that was the point,” Hermione said as she scanned the room to find where the bar was. Hermione pointed to the left side of the room. “There is the bar, let’s get something to drink then find a table.”
Luna bopped her head. “Sure, then we can mingle and try to guess who is who.”
Hermione laughed. This was the annual game that they would play, trying to guess who was who. They've become pretty good at it. It had almost become too easy for them, although they had a hard time finding out if they were right, since nobody would confirm or deny that they were at the ball.
As they approached the bar, there were several guests mingling there. Luna and Hermione squeezed to the front and signalled one of the bartenders working.
“I'll have a strawberry daiquiri.” Hermione smiled at the masked bartender.
“I'll have a gin and tonic,” Luna said with a wink.
“Coming right up ladies.”
Hermione turned to Luna and smiled she was about to say something was a voice behind her spoke first.
“Good evening ladies,” a silky voice said.
“Why hello,” both Luna and Hermione said at the same time. Hermione turned back around and got an eye full of hot wizard, or at least from what she could see.
The man was wearing leather trousers and a black dress shirt. Looking at his face, she sort of recognized his eyes through the mask that he wore, but she couldn't be sure. The dim light was making it hard to see what colour they were.
“Are you too signing up for the date auction?” he asked as he checked them out.
Hermione shook her head. “No, I just not sure that is my thing.”
“I'm still debating,” Luna said dreamily at him.
Hermione whipped her head around and raised an eyebrow at Luna with a look on her face that seemed to say, “Since when.”
“I'm glad actually, and then maybe you will bid on me,” he said silkily, as he grabbed his drink off the bar and strolled away.
“Who was that?” Hermione whispered.
“I don't know, but I will gladly bid on him,” Luna said.
“Me too,” Hermione smirked.
“Is this going to be a competition?” Luna said, in a challenging voice.
Hermione smiled. The bartender came back with their drinks before Hermione could say anything. “Here you go ladies. Enjoy.”
“Oh we will,” Luna said as she strolled off with her drink.
Hermione shook her head and dropped a few sickles in the tip goblet. “Thank you,” she said to the bartender and followed Luna.
Hermione and Luna found a table and sat down. No sooner had they sat down when three men joined them.
“You don't mind if we join you, do you?” one of the men asked in a sly voice.
“Of course not,” Luna said as she gestured to the open seats.
Hermione studied the men carefully as they chatted.
Hermione was sure that she recognized two of the men, one she was sure were Marcus Flint and the other one Oliver Wood. Although she was not quite sure. She had no idea who the third man was, he appeared to be older, maybe five or even eight years then she was.
One of the men stood up and held out his hand to Luna, “Would you like to dance?”
“I’d love to,” Luna said and she gave Hermione a wink and walk to the dance floor.
“Would you like to dance?” Hermione smiled at the new man that walked to the table.
“Damn,” whispered a voice from the table.
“I would like that very much.” Hermione smiled.
“I get next dance,” somebody else said.
Hermione smiled, her dance card was already getting full.
About two hours after Luna and Hermione arrived; Lucius, Narcissa and Draco made their entrance. They were the only people not wearing masks. They were the hosts it would be pointless for them to hide their faces.
They mingled with every guest and visited each table. They came to the table that Luna and Hermione were at along with two other guests.
“Are your enjoying the ball ladies and gentleman?” Draco spoke first.
“Yes, very much, thank you,” Hermione said politely.
“We are just about the start the date auction, if any of you wanted to sign up, but haven't, now would be the time,” Lucius said with a smile.
“We are also running a silent auction for a holiday in Italy, among other things if that is more your interest,” Narcissa said.
Hermione laughed to herself, she wondered if it was Lucius' idea for the date auction.
“Oh, I think I am very interested in the date auction!” Luna laughed. Lucius and Narcissa both laughed with her. Draco just smirked.
“Enjoy your evening,” Lucius said with a smile as he and his family moved to the next table.
One of the males at the table got up, “I think I will sign up the date auction if it’s not too late,” he said and left in a hurry.
Hermione got up, “I think I will check out the silent auction table.” She turned to Luna, “Do you want to come?”
“No, I'm going to get another drink,” she said, lifting her empty glass.
“I think I will too,” said that last member of their table.
“Okay, I will catch you in a few minutes then.” Hermione smiled at Luna.
~*~*~
Hermione made her way to the table that held the silent auction. It was located near the front of the entrance of the ballroom.
Hermione scanned the elaborately decorated tables. She eyed an antique white gold locket. “That's beautiful,” she whispered.
“Thank you,” Narcissa said behind her. “I actually bought at an antique shop in Hogsmeade when I was still at Hogwarts.
“Really, why are you selling it now?” Hermione asked curiously.
“I never wear it, and it's been collecting dust in a jewelry box,” Narcissa said nonchalantly.
Hermione eyed her suspiciously. She didn't quite believe her story.
“Okay, so an ex-boyfriend bought it for me at that antique shop. He was a sweet but boring bloke.”
Hermione laughed. “Well, it is very beautiful.”
“Why don't you place a bid, who know you might win, I think it would look lovely on you,” she said.
“I'll think about it,” Hermione said, looking back at the necklace.
“Excuse me; it is time to start the date auction. Will you be bidding, there are several interesting volunteers,” Narcissa winked and left.
Hermione smiled she eyed the locket one more time. “What the hell,” she whispered as she placed a bid.
~*~*~
Narcissa and Lucius clink their glasses to get the guests attention. “Ladies and Gentleman the date auction will be held in the adjourning room.” Narcissa pointed to the now opened double doors at the far end of the ballroom. “If you would kindly make your way there, we will begin momentarily. We just need to finish rounding up our victims, I mean volunteers,” Narcissa smiled at the crowd. The crowed laughed in return.
“I wondered how many volunteers they have?” Luna asked in wonder as she and Hermione made their way to the double door.
“I guess we will just have to wait as see.”
The room was set up like a theatre. There was a stage with a podium with a dark red and black backdrop. There were five rows of seat about thirty seats in total.
Hermione and Luna took seats on the left in the middle. The lights were dim, but not as dim as those in the ballroom were. Each held their bid fans with their own personal bid number on them.
Narcissa and Lucius stepped up to the podium. “Everyone take your seats we are about to begin.”
After a few moments, the guest settled down and Narcissa continued. “Tonight, ladies and gentleman, we have ten volunteers who offered their services for this auction. Now before we begin, I must point out that, all winners will have to sign a contract, and a statement, but we will get to that later. Now let the auction begin.”
Luna looked over at Hermione, smiled slyly, and winked.
Hermione shook her head and giggled. “Hey, I wonder where Draco is,” she said, looking around, not seeing him anywhere.
“Probably mingling with the other guests,” Luna said absently.
Narcissa continued, “Up first we have a stunning witch.” The witch approached the stage giving a little twirl.
“Okay, she looks a little like Lavender,” Hermione whispered to Luna.
Luna giggled, “Are you sure, I thought Lavender was shorter.”
Narcissa continued. “She likes dragon rides at twilight, silk sheets, and chocolate.” Narcissa half laughed, “Who doesn't. We will start the bidding at thousand galleons.”
“One thousand galleons,” a man shouted.
“Fifteen hundred,” another man shouted.
Narcissa smiled, “Thank you sir, anyone else?” there was silence, “Remember this is for charity.”
“Two thousand,” the first man yelled again.
“I have two thousand, going once,” Narcissa looked around; nobody else seemed interested, “going twice, sold for two thousand galleons. Thank you, sir, enjoy your date.”
The audience applauded as the witch left the stage with a small-disappointed look on her face and the next volunteer approached the stage.
“Oh another lovely witch is up for grabs tonight,” Narcissa smirked.
Hermione and Luna were surprised that the bidding was so low; usually people were willing to open their Gingotts accounts for the charity balls. Hermione hoped for the sake of the children, this auction will benefit, that the bidding goes higher.
Hermione glanced over to where the volunteers were coming from. She was hoping to get a sneak preview of what was to come, but it seems that they were well hidden until they approached that stage.
“I have five thousand; do I hear six?” Narcissa spoke, sounding pleased.
Hermione jerked her attention back to Narcissa; she didn't realize that bids were jumping so fast. The witch that was standing there was tall and dressed very sexy. Hermione smirked, no wonder she was getting so many bids.
“I have seven thousand, going once, going twice, sold for seven thousand galleons! Thank you very much, sir.”
There were a few catcalls when the witch left the stage.
“This seems wrong,” Hermione said. “It feels like I'm at a slave auction or something.”
“Do you go to those often?” Luna whispered with a giggle.
“You know that I mean; these people are being auctioned off just based on how they look.”
“It's just for fun, and they volunteered.” Luna pointed out.
“Ladies, the next one is for you.” Narcissa smiled.
A tall wizard appeared on the stage, he was well built, and the tight leather pants he was wearing left little to the imagination. Both Luna and Hermione mouths fell open in awe as they realized it was the man that greeted them at the bar.
“This stunning creature, likes to pamper his witch, with long deep massages, moonlight broom rides, and nature walks. Well aren't you just a romantic, I might have to bid on you myself,” Narcissa said, running a slender finger down his arm, and sneaking a peak at his backside.
Lucius cleared his throat to get his wife's attention. He leaned over and whispered, “You can't bid, dearest, you are the auctioneer, host, and married!”
“Well then, shall we start the bidding at two thousand galleons?”
“Two thousand!” a voice shouted out.
“Three thousand,” another voice said.
“Four thousand!” the first voice said again.
The bids were coming in so fast that Narcissa had a hard time keeping up.
Hermione sat there in awe and wondered if she should bid. She was about to raise her fan and shout out when a voice shouted next to her. “Five thousand.”
Hermione whipped her head towards Luna, “What are you doing?”
“Buying a date,” Luna said, casually licking her lips.
“I was going to do that,” Hermione hissed.
“Sorry, I bid first,” Luna smirked.
Hermione huffed out, raised her fan and shouted, “Six thousand!”
“Seven,” Luna shouted again.
“Eight!” Hermione shouted back.
“Nine thousand!” Luna shouted even louder.
“Wow, we have nine thousand! Any other...” Narcissa said.
“Ten thousand,” Hermione shouted. She turned and smirked at Luna.
Eleven thousand!” someone shouted from the back.
“Oh no, they didn't,” Hermione said whipping her head around to see who it was that out bid her. “Twelve thousand,” Hermione shouted.
“Thirteen thousand.” the same voice from the back.
Both Hermione and Luna stood up and shouted at the same time, “Fifteen thousand!”
“Well then we have two bids at fifteen thousand. Any one else what to bid?”
Hermione and Luna both stared down everyone in the room daring them to bid.
The wizard on stage was smirking and slightly shaking, he was trying not to laugh at the bidding war.
“I have fifteen thousand going once, going twice...”
“Sixteen thousand,” the same voice shouted in the back.
Hermione and Luna turned to each other. Luna spoke first, “You know we could pool our money and share him?”
Hermione started at Luna for a second, what would that mean, share, would they both go on the date?
“Sixteen thousand, going once, going twice...” Narcissa was starting at Hermione and Luna, seeing if they would bid again.
Hermione nodded to Luna, “Okay.
“Twenty thousand!” they both shouted in urgency.
“SOLD!” Narcissa shouted back, pointing at Luna and Hermione. “Wow! Thank you, ladies. “I'm sure you will work out the details with this handsome specimen later.” Lucius cleared his throat again.
Hermione barely heard Narcissa; did she and Luna really just spend twenty thousand galleons on a date?!
Hermione slowly sat down again. “I feel so dirty, did we just buy a date together?” she said and turned to Luna.
“Yes, yes we did.” Luna smiled.
“What did I get myself into?” Hermione muttered.
The rest of the auction was rather uneventful, but the auction raised over sixty thousand galleons.
Hermione and Luna rejoined the ball after the auction.
“That was fun!” Luna said.
“I'm not sure about that. Did we just really buy a date with the same guy? How is this going to work out?” Hermione asked in disbelief.
“We will figure it out. Hey, maybe he will like being out with two women.”
“You two need to sign the contact,” Narcissa said as she came up behind them.
“Forgot about that,” Hermione said in a daze.
“It's this way,” Narcissa said as she lead Hermione and Luna to a private room.
“You two caused for quite an interesting auction,” Lucius said as he handed them forms to fill out.
Hermione looked over the contracts. It was a simple contract, protecting both the volunteer and buyer, stating that no ill or illegal activities were to happen. No exploitation or abuse. Hermione nodded her head. She was glad for these, she hate to have something bad happen out of something that was suppose to be for charity.
They signed the contacts and handed them back to Lucius. They waited for him to look them over to make sure everything was in order.
“You two are all set.” Lucius smiled.
“Wait, how are we supposed to set up the date, or contact...ah, who ever we bid on?” Hermione asked.
“We can set that up right now if you would like, ladies?” a voice from behind them said.
Hermione spun around and came face to face with the man that had sparked such a bidding war just moment before.
“He looks more scrumptious in the bright light,” Narcissa whispered. “What I wouldn't give to be younger.”
Lucius cleared his throat again at his wife. “They way you talk, dearest, I would think that I don't satisfy you anymore.”
Narcissa chuckled and looked at her husband. “Of course you do.” She smiled and patted his cheek.
Hermione and Luna both raised their eyebrows at the couple and chuckled to themselves. “How about next Friday night, I know this perfect place we could have a romantic date for three,” he said with a wink.
“Okay, but how do we contact...” Hermione started to say.
“I will take care of everything,” he said.
“I will send transportation to fetch you both.”
Hermione and Luna looked at each other with confusion.
“First,” Luna started, “how will you know where we live?”
“And second, we, in a word, bought you; I thought we would be paying for the date.” Hermione finished.
“Sorry ladies never pay for a date. My mum would have my head if you two paid.”
“Oh and he is a gentleman! Why couldn't.... Ouch!” Narcissa yelp as Lucius pinched her derriere, hard.
Hermione shook with laughter at the older couple.
“I will see you two ladies next Friday,” he said as he kissed both Hermione and Luna's hand, turned, and left the room.
“Who was that masked man?” Hermione whispered dreamily.”
“What?” Luna asked, snapping Hermione out of her daze.
“Nothing,” Hermione said, shaking her head.
“Wait, we don't even know who he is,” Hermione said.
“And you won't until next Friday.” Narcissa smiled. “Rules.”
Luna whipped her head around and wagged her eyebrows, “You know who he is, don't you?”
All Narcissa did was smile. “The silent action will end soon; make sure you check out the items before time runs out.”
“I think that is our cue to leave,” Luna whispered, not so quietly, to Hermione.
Hermione giggled at the silliness of the whole evening, “I think you might be right.”
“To be a fly on the wall, during that date,” Lucius said as Luna and Hermione left the room.
“We probably get an eyeful of hot wizard,” Narcissa said, licking her lips.
Lucius turned to his wife. “I think you need to be reminded that you married a very sexy wizard.”
“Ooh I like the sound of that,” Naricssa said as they ran out of the room, and up the stairs like a couple of teenagers sneaking past the parents.
Hermione and Luna were distracted after the auction. They danced and socialized, but their minds were not on the party anymore. They tried to find their auction date, but he seemed to have disappeared.
At the end of the night, Hermione checked the table where the silent auction was held. It turned out that she had won the antique locket.
At the end of the night, Hermione and Luna were exhausted by the time they arrived back at Hermione's flat.
“That was some evening,” Luna said.
“You can say that again!” Hermione exclaimed. “My head is full of stuff that I still do not comprehend.”
“That's a first.” Luna joked.
“Funny.”
Luna yawned. “I'm beat. I'm going to go home and get some sleep.”
“If you are too tired you can always stay here the night,” Hermione smiled.
“As long as you promise not to steal the covers this time,” Luna laughed as she ran into the bedroom. “Do you still have some of my clothes here?”
“Yes, they are in the bottom of the wardrobe.”
“Just like old time,” Luna yelled from inside the bedroom.
“Hopefully,” Hermione smirked she went into the bedroom with Luna.
