Chapter 1 The Contract
Draco Malfoy answered the door impatiently. It was late at night and he had dismissed the staff an hour ago as he had not been expecting company. The person he found on his doorstep was even less expected.
“Hermione Granger, to what do I owe this displeasure,” he drawled. She was bedraggled from the rain, her eyes reddened and nose pink, perhaps from crying, perhaps from the cold. Either way he showed little concern.
“Malfoy, I need your help. Can I please come in?”
“No, Granger. Your kind aren’t welcome in this house, surely you know that? If you want something spit it out or get lost.”
She wrung her hands, looking around nervously. She seemed satisfied that they were quite alone because she blurted out, “I need money, a lot of money and immediately and you have a lot, so...”
“Why would I give you money, Granger?”
“I’ll pay it back, every cent. You know I will, Malfoy. You know my word is good.”
“What’s it for?”
“It’s personal.”
“Indulge me,” he sneered.
“My mother is sick. I’ve tried everything magical, I’ve taken her to every healer. The only treatment available is experimental and it’s not covered by private insurance or the NHS. I can’t get the money any other way. I’m desperate, Malfoy.”
He laughed in her face. “You want me to pay to save a fucking muggle? Are you mad? It’s absurd.”
Hermione looked downcast, utterly miserable. Malfoy stood over her, examining her.
“It’s my mother. Is there nothing you wouldn’t do for yours?” she asked through watery eyes.
He liked this look on Granger, her pride despatched, her desperate for his help.
“Isn’t this the same mother who forgot you existed for an entire year a couple of years back?”
“Yes, so you can surely understand why it’s so important to me that I don’t lose her now!” she squeaked.
“I’ll make you a deal, Granger, but you’re going to make it worth my while,” he opened the door to her and led her through the entrance to his office space to the left of the entrance hall. He’d taken over Malfoy Manor and the responsibilities of managing the majority of the family finances since his parents decided to retire and travel after the war. They had enough of the stares after the war when they escaped penalty by testifying against the other Death Eaters in Voldemort’s company and needed a change of scenery. This left Draco entirely alone, the master of the Manor.
“I’ll pay for the medical treatment for your mother, Granger, but I want something in trade more valuable than cash.”
“Anything,” she promised.
“Silly girl,” thought Malfoy, “So naive to the negotiation process. This is going to be fun.”
“You,” he demanded.
“What about me?” she asked innocently.
“Not about you, Granger you twit, you. I say “Granger, I want you” and you appear as instantly and silently as a house elf and you do whatever I demand.”
“You want me to be a servant?”
“Not exactly. I want you to be subservient to me. I want you to do what I want, whenever I want, whereever I want it.”
“You want to humiliate me?” she guessed.
“Among other things,” he said in a gutteral voice.
“You’re foul, Malfoy. Sick. I...I won’t do it.”
“Shame,” he sighed. “See yourself out then.”
Hermione turned to leave and took two paces towards the door. She thought of her mother and how close she was to either saving or losing her forever and turned around, throwing a piece of paper on his desk. “I need this - name your terms,” she said, knowing she had been defeated the minute she had decided to apparate to Malfoy’s doorstep.
Draco flicked his wand lazily and a quill began writing out a contract of service. Hermione sat and waited for the quill to cease it’s scratching before tearing the contract out of Malfoy’s hands. Her eyes widened in horror.
“I just want it made perfectly clear, Granger, that if you choose to enter my service I won’t be holding back. I intend to make you pay for everything you and your little friends ever did to me and my family.”
“We saved your life, Malfoy!” she shrieked.
“I remember exactly what you did, Granger,” he snarled. “Which is why I’m even entertaining this...transaction. So there you have it, in black and white, what I expect.”
“I’m to submit to whippings?”
“I told you Granger, I won’t hold back on you. Keep reading.”
“No. No, Malfoy. I won’t whore myself. Why do you even want that anyway? I thought I was a filthy mudblood?”
“It’s not about me wanting you, if that’s what you think. It’s about power. I have it, you don’t. If I ask for it, you give it to me. Simple.”
“I hate you.”
“Yet, you came here.”
The struggle read on her fair features. “Fine,” she said through pursed lips.
Draco’s eyes widened. He hadn’t expected that. He had simply been testing her resolve and thought she would have stormed out in disgust with her nose in the air like he had witnessed so many times at school. How the mighty had fallen.
“But there has to be a limit,” she continued. “Three times.”
“Twenty-six,” he countered. “Once a week for six months.”
“No.”
“You’re not in much of a position to bargain, Granger,” he pointed out.
“Ten.” She sat down again, hunched, begging. “Please.”
He added the stipulation for ten encounters to the contract and signed it, handing her the quill. She took it, hands shaking, and also signed.
“You are aware that you belong to me now, Granger? Until this contract is fulfilled you’re to keep what I own pristine. That means no other men, got it?”
“I’m aware.”
“And you’re to address me as “Malfoy,” with that disdainful tone you always have just so I can take pleasure in punishing you for it.”
“Yes, Malfoy,” she snarled through clenched teeth.
“I’ll have Gringotts transfer the money you need by morning. We’re done here. Go,” he commanded. She disapparated from the room and Draco sat back behind the desk and re-read the contract. He shook his head. He certainly wouldn’t do half of what Granger had signed up for to save his own parents and he’d signed on with Voldemort.
Hermione apparated to Ginny’s house looking for a friend and confidant. She did not expect to find her with both Ron and Harry. Unable to hold it in, she had begun sobbing on Ginny’s shoulder before she had even seen who else might have been there.
“Ginny, I’ve done something awful. I had no choice but I fear I’ve made a terrible mistake.”
Ginny brought her into the house and fetched her a hot cup of tea to calm her. The three of her best friends sat awaiting her story. She told of her mother’s illness, how she had gone to Malfoy for help, how she’d lost the negotiation, the contract. She skimmed over the worst parts of it but they were all horrified regardless.
“How could you do it, Hermione?” Ron shouted at her.
“Ron, that’s not helpful,” Ginny chastised.
“But it’s Malfoy. Why did you even go there in the first place? What the bloody hell were you thinking? He’ll hurt you, you know he will.”
Hermione stared at Ron helplessly before whispering, “I know.”
“And you still did it. He owns you now. It’s disgusting. You’re disgusting for agreeing to it,” he spat before leaving via the front door.
Harry sat next to Hermione and put his hand on her knee. “If it’s a matter of money, you know you could have come to me,” he said gently.
“I couldn’t,” she cried, tears running down her nose.
“Of course you could. Geez, Hermione, I didn’t know you were so proud to not ask your closest friends for help.”
“You think I’m proud? You think I’m proud of doing this?” she gestured wildly. “I couldn’t ask you, Harry. If I’d asked you Ron never would have forgiven either of us for it. You know how he gets when he can’t afford things and this...this was too much. Too much money and too much of a debt for me to owe you. He would resent you for it for the rest of our lives! We’d never get past it. Don’t look at me like that. You know I’m right!” she quietly. She’d thought this through and saw no other way around it already. “This...thing...with Malfoy is just business. It’s impersonal. I do what he wants in exchange for money to try and save my mother’s life and then I never have to see him ever again. I get to move past it and forget it ever happened. I’ll obliviate myself. I don’t care. It’s my mother, Harry. Surely of all people you can understand?”
“Of course I do, Hermione, but you have to understand why Ron reacted the way he did. He thought you two had something special but now you’ve signed the rights to whatever you two could have had over to Malfoy. Did you really think Ron would just accept you doing that?”
“No,” she cried, throwing her hands to her face in shame, “I knew he wouldn’t. I...I...” she cried hysterically. “I know I’ve messed up. Please don’t hate me for it.”
Ginny stroked Hermione’s back. “We don’t hate you, Hermione. We never could, but are you sure there’s no way out of it?”
“No. It’s as magically binding as an unbreakable vow. We both have to honour it.”
“I’ll obliviate you, Hermione,” Ginny offered. “No one should do it on themselves. Please, just promise you’ll come to us before you go making deals with the devil himself next time, alright?”
Hermione nodded and continued to cry while Harry poured them all a Firewhisky.
