Title: Work Study
Author: Prentice
Fandom: Harry Potter
Rating: ADULT+
Warning: Older Woman(40+)/Younger Man (Teens); Uneven Power Dynamics due to an age difference and the fact that Hermione is effectively Scorpius's boss/mentor.
Pairing: Hermione Granger/Scorpius Malfoy; background Albus Severus/Other and various canon pairings.
Author's Note: Please note that in this fic will be slow to update due to various commitments elsewhere. It will not be abandoned. Also, an important story note, this is an AU and while I do borrow certain elements from canon (certain pairings, etc.), it isn't meant to be read as a loyal canon-compliant fic (i.e. if it isn't canon-compliant, it isn't meant to be). Also, please do give me feedback as writing a long-form 'het' fic is really out of my comfort zone!
Summary: Assigned a work-study assignment with Undersecretary Hermione Granger, Scorpius Malfoy struggles with an inappropriate crush, a best friend in love, and a misappropriated time turner that just might lead him down the path of true love.
Chapter 1
“I just don’t understand why it can’t be with you, father.”
Fighting back a sigh, Draco Malfoy shook his head, fingers curling tighter around the stem of his wine glass. It was, he suspected, going to be the first of many that evening. Especially if he was going to be forced to endure another round of this particular conversation.
“You know why, son,” he said after a moment, eyes sliding to where his wife, Astoria, frowned behind her own wine glass. He didn’t blame her. As much as he loved their son, he was being surprisingly difficult about this. “What I don’t understand is why you’re still making such a fuss about it.”
“I’m not making a fuss!” Scorpius denied hotly, pale face flushing. “I just don’t understand it. You’re my father. You work at the Ministry. Why can’t I be assigned to you for the duration of my work-study assignment? Why do I have to be assigned to Undersecretary Granger? Everyone knows she’s a bloody – ”
“Scorpius,” Astoria cut in sharply, warningly. Her wine glass tinkled softly as she placed it back on the table, painted lips pinched with displeasure. “What have I told you about that word?”
“Mother,” Scorpius started, only to fall silent when she narrowed her eyes at him. Sighing, he slumped slightly in his seat, a lock of blond hair sliding across his forehead, making him look every bit of his seventeen years. “You said only uncouth mongrels use it.”
“That’s right,” Astoria agreed, eyes still narrowed. “I did. Now, I don’t know what everyone seems to ‘know’ about Undersecretary Granger and, frankly, I don’t care to know; your father and I had quite enough of that when we were at school together with the poor woman. What I do know, however, is that I will not have you behave like some foul-mouthed little cur; you’re better than that and you will act like it.”
“Yes, mother,” Scorpius conceded quietly. “I apologize. I shouldn’t have used it.”
“No, you shouldn’t have,” Astoria replied tartly before once more picking up her wine glass. Taking a slow sip, she glanced leadingly towards her husband. Draco sighed.
“Scorpius,” he started, only to pause and take his own much longer and therefore more fortifying sip of wine. “Son. I don’t know exactly why you’re so upset about your placement. Granger might not be the first witch or wizard I would have picked for you to work with at the Ministry, but even I can’t deny that she’s an incredibly competent and talented witch, even despite her muggle upbringing. That she’s currently Undersecretary to the Minister could go a long way to getting your foot in the door there, much more so than working with me; this is amazing opportunity for you.”
“I know it is,” Scorpius said, lips twisting. “I was just…” Hesitating, he shook his head. “I guess I was just hoping I’d get assigned to someone – somewhere – else. Albus owled me this morning; he’ll be shadowing his Uncle Ron in the Auror department for his work-study.”
“Poor boy,” Draco muttered, pointedly ignoring the scowl his son sent his way as he took another fortifying sip of wine. He’d need a refill soon, especially if he was going to have to hear about a Weasley. “I know you’re close to him, son, but you can’t be joined at the hip all the time. In fact, I think this might be good for you both.”
Sighing, Scorpius slumped even further in his seat, the very picture of a downtrodden teenager. Barely resisting the urge to roll his eyes, Draco shared a quick but speaking glance with his wife. She, it seemed, had no real desire to resist the urge.
“Scorpius, darling,” Astoria said after a moment, “if you really don’t want to do your work-study with Undersecretary Granger, I’m sure your father could pull a few strings, but please don’t throw away this opportunity simply because your friend is in a different department. Like your father said: this is a chance to get your foot in the door and that isn’t easy these days, especially with all the reforms Minister Potter has enacted over the last few years.”
Nodding, Draco sat a bit straighter in his chair, fingers flicking towards his wine glass. Slowly, it began to refill. “Your mother isn’t wrong, you know. Potter and I might not have seen eye-to-eye on everything over the years, but he’s done a lot to fix the worst and most egregious of the cracks in the Ministry’s foundation in the last few years.”
Picking up his now full glass, he gestured with it vaguely. “The biggest and most noticeable one being our hiring practices, hence you and your friend’s current work-study assignment. That said,” he studied his son carefully, tone suddenly serious, “if you honestly object to working with Granger for reasons other than not being in the same department as your friend, I will step in, son. All you have to do is ask.”
Flushing, Scorpius shook his head. “No, it’s fine – I mean, it’s not that. I just,” flush worsening, he shrugged almost helplessly. “I just didn’t expect it, I guess. I’ll be fine. Working with her – I mean, Undersecretary Granger will be a great opportunity for me and it’s not like it’ll be forever.”
“Only two weeks,” Astoria chimed in, smiling. “That’s hardly any time at all, darling.”
“It’ll be over before you know it,” Draco added after another mouthful of wine, hoping, somewhat vainly he supposed, that this would be the last time he had to have this conversation. “In fact, you’ll probably wonder what all the fuss was about when it is. After all, what could possibly happen in a fortnight with someone like Hermione Granger?”
Shrugging again, Scorpius sighed. “I guess I’ll find out.”
