A Mudblood's Revenge
Setting: Alternate Universe where Voldemort's Horcruxes weren't (yet!) discovered, and thus, Albus Dumbledore didn't die by putting on the Peverell ring during their sixth year. They finished Hogwarts, and are now adult members of the Order of the Phoenix, trying to vanquish Lord Voldemort, who took over the Ministry right after their seventh year.
Chapter One: The Order Meeting
Another meeting of the Order of the Phoenix.
Hermione wasn't sure she could stand any more of them. When they'd been teenagers, they had all wanted in. Now that they were adults though, she wished she'd grabbed Harry and run hard and far, vanishing after their Hogwarts years like He had.
Maybe they still could?
She sat in the corner of the kitchen of 12 Grimmauld Place, a book in her lap, staring at her best friend arguing with Albus Dumbledore on how to proceed. It occurred to Hermione that the old man never agreed with anything they proposed. Not that she was in the habit of sharing her ideas these days.
Things had been different in the beginning. Before Harry had another incident with Lord Voldemort that should've killed the dark wizard, they had many plans. Some were even listened to and enacted. But Dumbledore had gone thoughtful and quiet after that day as if there were something he wasn't sharing with them. She'd heard him argue with Severus Snape once.
'Have you ever considered that you ask too much, that you take too much for granted?'
They'd noticed her then, and had closed the door. She'd wondered what had Snape so riled up that he'd speak like that to Dumbledore.
Nowadays she often felt the same. There was an undercurrent—a sense of urgency they all felt—except it seemed for Albus Dumbledore. Instead he basically kept them in hiding at all times.
'We have to do something!' Harry said, his voice louder than before. 'He's reopening Hogwarts. Those children, they will be taught by his followers. We have to stop that. We can't let them. They won't be safe.'
As always, nothing was done. Hogwarts reopened September First with Snape as the new Headmaster.
Harry had stomped through the house all day in his fit of frustration. He'd wanted to hijack the train, bringing all the children to safety.
Rash, even by his standards.
Hermione had agreed with Dumbledore that Harry's plan was no solution, even though she didn't voice her opinions at the table. When they'd retreated to Harry's bedroom, she listened to Harry ranting about how they did nothing and sat around all day long, while countless children would suffer at the hands of dark arts practitioners. How impressionable eleven year olds would be easily turned. How they were sitting ducks in this house. How they were prisoners just like Sirius had been. She'd remained quiet through it all. She'd recognised the validity of his points, despite finding his plan insane. So, she'd let Harry rant and pace as he clearly needed to get it out of his system. Ron had left the bedroom, fed up with Harry. Fed up with her, she added as an afterthought.
It was sad to see them drift apart. They'd always been so close, but she supposed Ron blamed her.
Unlike them, the Weasleys still went wherever they pleased, despite being heavily tailed. Voldemort had tried using them against Harry, but Hermione had stopped him from taking the bait.
'This is what happened with Sirius all over again. He knows you'll come. He'll hurt them more if you come, just to enjoy watching you suffer at their pain.'
'If I don't come, he will kill them, Hermione.'
'He will definitely kill them all if you do come.'
She hadn't liked hurting Harry with Sirius's death like that, but she couldn't stand by and let it happen all over again. She still blamed herself for not stopping him that night. She'd had a feeling then that they were being played, and hadn't protested forcefully enough.
Not again.
Never again.
Dumbledore had nodded at her reasoning when she'd held an upset Harry close to her chest. In the days that followed, the Weasleys lost their parents, George, and Percy, until the rest of them were released suddenly. Dumbledore had already made the house unplottable to the Weasleys by changing its Secret Keeper. He'd also changed the wards for good measure. There was no way anyone would be able to enter until he was certain they could be trusted. Bill was the first one to make his way back with Kingsley as his guide once they'd found a way around the numerous tracking charms on the family by having Death Eaters and Snatchers following random wizards or witches instead. She'd sat quietly in the corner as Dumbledore and Snape interrogated him on what had occurred. It had been a horrific story, especially when it got to the part of what Ginny had gone through.
On that day, Ginny Weasley came to live at 12 Grimmauld Place. There was no way she would be returning to Hogwarts or able to stay at the insecure Burrow. Dumbledore's orders of course.
Everything always happened on his order.
She recalled how Ginny had thrown herself at Harry, inconsolable and appearing almost unable to let go. He held her for as long as she needed. During the nights she stayed with Hermione, slowly opening up about what had happened.
Again.
Just like before.
Voldemort had used her time with his journal against her. He'd made her kill her parents. Slowly. Horrifically. Hermione knew Ginny had never fully recovered from having Tom Riddle rummage around in her mind, but this was an additional blow she wasn't sure the witch, despite how strong she was, would be able to move on from.
The Weasleys that survived the ordeal had a newfound, almost religious-like fanaticism in their allegiance to the Order of the Phoenix. They were more determined than ever to destroy the wizard who'd tortured and killed their family members. Fred, especially, went on mission after mission, taking down Death Eater after Death Eater. He was exceptionally good at it, though extremely reckless. He didn't seem to care whether he lived or died, just so long as he took as many of them with him as he could. Hermione had voiced her concerns about his well-being once, but she was shut down by Dumbledore who stated Fred needed this.
'Fred, or you?' she'd thought, but not spoken.
Charlie had gone back to Romania, making sure Voldemort wouldn't end up with an army of dragons. Bill and Fleur had been sent to Egypt on some Order mission she had no knowledge of but was certain involved ancient magic and the security of wizarding fundings. Fred and Ginny hadn't blamed her when they heard she'd talked Harry out of going.
Fred had slapped her on the back and said, 'We'd all have been dead if the Chosen One had shown up.'
Ginny had nodded in agreement, holding Harry's hand tightly. However, Ron had been silent. After that day, he stayed mostly at the Burrow, only showing up for Order meetings. That day a rift formed between them she wasn't sure could ever be bridged.
One time when she couldn't stay silent and commented that the mission Ron and Fred were preparing to depart on was too dangerous, Ron snapped and said, 'I'm in rather a hurry, Granger … unlike you, I don't have unlimited leisure time.'
It was like a slap to the face. As a Muggle-born witch and known best friend to Harry Potter, she'd been basically locked up in the house. With every passing day, she began to understand Sirius more and more. It was a dreadful, unwelcome place, especially to her. She always had to be careful with any unknown items, even ones positioned on shelves in plain sight. She was everything this house hated, and it made itself known whenever it could.
So, Ron and Fred stupidly went on that mission and came back heavily wounded, the mission a complete failure. They barely escaped by the skin of their teeth. After informing Dumbledore of the details of their failed mission, he sent them to her to have their injuries treated. Hermione had become quite adept at healing charms and potions. All the medical treatment normally requiring a fully qualified Healer was a luxury they had no access to. She'd cleaned out one of the many rooms of the house and made it into a solid treatment facility. She addressed Fred's injuries, but not Ron's. He refused to look her in the eye and claimed he was more than capable of treating himself before leaving in a hurry. It pained her that their friendship had been reduced to this, but she didn't think she could have or would've done anything differently had she known of this outcome.
'He'll come around,' Fred said softly, as she readjusted his shoulder. 'He just needs to get his head on straight.'
'I don't think so, not this time around,' she replied sadly.
'You were right then as you were right about this mission. I'm amazed we got out. The others weren't that lucky,' he added, his jaw set.
One day she was shelving the potions Snape had just brought her when Albus Dumbledore came stumbling into her healing room, his hand rotting away and a strange looking ring on his finger that screamed cursed object. She caught him in her arms, and he merely said, 'Severus, I need Severus.'
She got the professor, but they locked her out of her own damn room. She shook her head at that.
Always the secrets, never the whole story.
She noted Dumbledore now wore gloves at all times—a sure sign to Hermione his hand hadn't healed properly.
And why wouldn't he just let her take a look at it?
She sat at the window sill during another dreadfully long meeting, reading her new book on types of cursed wounds and the possible healing requirements. She'd noticed Dumbledore's eyes had briefly darted to the title, but he hadn't commented on her choice in reading. It wasn't until there was a huge uproar in the room, disturbing her reading, that she realised just how focused she'd been on the book to the point of not noticing anything else. She wondered what could've provoked this latest outburst.
Probably some insipid plan.
Snape stood in the other corner near the door, his arms crossed, being his usual batlike, condescending self, while Dumbledore stood with his hands on the table, telling a furious Fred and Ron there was no other way. Harry had his arms around a starkwhite Ginny Weasley, and seemed equally disgusted by whatever had been suggested.
McGonagall rubbed her forehead and said, 'You're asking too much of the girl, Albus.'
'Have you ever considered that you ask too much, that you take too much for granted?'
'Ask what?' Hermione asked calmly in the silence.
Fred stayed Ron's response with a hand on his arm and replied, 'They want Ginny to infiltrate the Dark Lord's ranks and kill him.'
'That's ridiculous,' Hermione said, her eyes flitting from Ginny to Dumbledore. How could he even think that would work after what had happened the second time she came face to face with Tom Riddle?
'Thank you,' Harry said.
'She is the one he wants, and thus, might be able to get close enough to him to actually do it,' Snape said smoothly.
'Close enough to do what?'
Dumbledore pulled the sword of Gryffindor out of thin air and placed it on the table. Looking at Hermione, he said, 'We found a way to hide this on the body of a true Gryffindor. Only a true Gryffindor can see and touch it. No other can. Severus has come with news. It's come to Voldemort's attention that Ginny has been absent since her stay with him.'
'How did he figure that out?' Hermione interrupted, her eyes glancing between Dumbledore and Snape. 'The ghoul in the attic didn't fool him?' she added, unable to hide the sarcasm creeping into her voice.
'It was Malfoy,' Fred sneered. 'He had to come snooping.'
'I should've killed that snitching, twitchy ferret,' Ron snapped.
You and what army? she thought but didn't voice. As much as she had once loved Ron, and as good a chess player as he was, he didn't have the same background as Draco who undoubtedly had learned a couple of more Dark Arts curses by now from his lovely auntie.
'There was no way I could escape informing him that she's been staying with the Order, with Potter,' Snape said coolly.
'Why not?' Harry snapped. 'You hide everything else. She's not doing this. He'll never give her the chance.'
'He's not afraid of her, Potter, like he is of you—no matter how ill-informed and unnecessary that may be. He'll let her come close. Last time he was all over her. He enjoys the power he holds over her. We might be able to sell she came to him willingly. He's arrogant enough to believe it.'
Hermione noted Ginny shivering, while Harry wrapped his arms even tighter around the redhead.
No one in their right mind would believe that.
'It's suicide,' Harry said.
'There's a good chance she won't come back indeed. His followers won't be amused, and we can't be certain she can do it in private if she even succeeds. Severus will try to get her out if he's there when it happens, but ...' Albus Dumbledore said, pausing, not looking at Ginny but at the sword.
Hermione frowned. It was like he was not talking to Ginny, but to the sword. He couldn't at least look the girl he was about to sacrifice in the eye? She looked in Ginny's direction, taking in her frozen figure. She'd be like that when the moment came, Hermione realised. She wouldn't be able to finish him off, and he'd have the Sword of Gryffindor.
'But we need this blow,' Dumbledore continued, 'We need time to find the others.'
Others, what others? Possible allies?
'If he were to physically die again…'
'He didn't die when Harry did it,' Ron said, his ears red in fury. 'What guarantee do you even have that he will die from that sword?'
'Basilisk venom, Weasley, I know you didn't pay much attention in my class, but surely you remember the giant, ancient creature you lot killed. Oh wait, you had your wand broken and weren't there,' Snape snarled.
'I'll do it,' Hermione interrupted before Ron could launch over the table and attack Snape.
That caused another uproar. Dumbledore's head lifted up, and his blue eyes regarded her seriously. Suddenly Hermione had the distinct feeling this had been his plan all along.
'No,' Harry yelled, 'No, if it's not going to be me, no one is going. You won't even get close, Hermione.'
'I'll figure out a way,' she said, looking right at him.
'You're Muggle-born,' Fred said seriously. 'He won't even bother. He'll kill you on sight.'
'You think I have nothing of value to him?'
'I think you won't get the chance to show him,' Fred said gently.
'He won't kill her,' Ginny whispered, horrified. 'He'll throw her to his followers. You know what they do to Muggle-born witches.'
McGonagall shivered, 'Albus, this is insane.'
'She's not whom he asked me to bring,' Snape added quietly. 'He won't be amused if I show up with another.'
'I'm sure you'll figure out a plausible excuse as to why you had to settle for me,' Hermione said, standing up straight.
'What's your plan?' Dumbledore asked.
'No, she doesn't have a plan. She just heard of this, and it's not happening.'
'Harry,' Hermione admonished. 'I love you, but this is my decision.'
'Miss Granger?' Dumbledore interrupted.
'Well, I suppose it's not rocket science, is it? I stick him with the pointy end,' she snarked, gesturing to the sword.
Fred snorted, muffling the rest of his laughter behind his hand. 'I'd love to witness that.'
Ron eyed her with a pained expression, his emotions clearly all over the place as his blue eyes flickered between her and Ginny.
'How do you plan to hide the sword on me if I most likely will not have any clothes on by the time I'm brought before him?'
She knew enough about Voldemort's meetings to know what happened to Muggle-born witches that got captured.
Ginny suddenly yanked out of Harry's grip and whirled out of the room. In the distance the door to the bathroom slammed against the wall. Even through the now ear piercing wails of Walburga Black, they could still hear Ginny vomiting violently.
'Go after her, Harry, I'm fine,' Hermione said, calm.
'Don't do this, Hermione, please,' Harry said, stopping briefly in the doorway. 'I can't lose you, too.'
'I'll be fine,' she repeated.
When Severus Snape walked her out the door, hands tied behind her back, the sword of Gryffindor a constant itch under her skin, he said, 'You're either incredibly stupid, Miss Granger, or even more devious than I ever gave you credit for.'
'How so?'
He turned her around, hands on her upper arms, and stared straight into her eyes. She met them unblinkingly.
Shouldn't have taught us all Occlumency if you wanted to know what I have planned, Professor, was the thought she put at the forefront of her mind.
'Cause I have no idea what you're playing at,' Snape said, yanking her to him and Disapparating them.
