Hermione stood, smiling, at the hustle and bustle of Platform 9 and ¾. It was so wonderful to see the sea of students running down the platform, yelling to one another, laughing, dragging trunks and various animal cages looking for their friends. In her minds eye, she could see herself as she had been as a child with too many books in her hands trying to get on the train before she dropped them. The whistle of train made her jump and then she laughed at herself, at the age of twenty-three, Hermione Granger could have simply apparated to the school, but she’d asked the Headmistress and her favorite professor, Minerva McGonagall if she could take the train with the students instead to which she got permission. Hermione stepped on the train and walked to the front, picking an empty compartment and sat down, pulling out a book to occupy her mind with.
Against the students popular belief that they rode the train without adult supervision, they did not. There were train monitors that rode from station to station and made sure that all went well. There was only one occasion when an adults presence had been known and that had been Lupin in her third year. The thought of her old DADA professor made her heart throb with the familiar agony of loss and she was forced to take several deep breaths to calm herself. She’d been afraid that this would happen, going back to Hogwarts had been a dream and a fear of hers since she left it four years ago. The memories of the friends she lost had only begun to heal and she was sure that coming back to the place of the final battle would scratch that newly healed wound and make it hurt every once in a while. She’d just have to learn to deal with it and get through it the best she could.
Ron had told her she was mental for coming back. He didn’t seem to understand her interest in going back there, at least that’s what he told her. Ron and Harry immediately went to University to study the things they needed to, to become Aurors. Hermione had chosen to stay at Hogwarts and help them clean up and rebuild afterwards. Harry had donated a very large amount of gold to go to the reconstruction, but said that he just couldn’t face being there yet. Everyone understood, just like they understood Ron’s inability to be there too, though he wouldn’t admit it. He claimed that he didn’t feel like doing all that work after a year of living in the woods and nearly starving to death. After the loss of his brother and friends at the school, Hermione didn’t expect him to ever return there. After four years of study, Harry and Ron did their apprenticeships at the Ministry while Hermione finished up her last year. Now they were full-fledged Aurors starting out their careers while she was starting her own apprenticeship under Professor Flitwick, the Charms professor. Harry had informed Hermione that without Ron’s knowledge, he’d gotten a teaching certificate in Defense Against the Dark Arts. He’d explained that while he really wanted to be an Auror, he wasn’t entirely sure that it was the full career option that he wanted for his whole life and that in ten or so years he wanted to reevaluate where he was and maybe make the change from Auror to professor. A teaching certificate was different than a license and that was different than a masters as she was sure everyone knew. At this point Harry could be a primary school teacher or an assistant at Hogwarts, with a license he could be a tutor or teacher in the primary school, but with a masters, like Hermione had, that was when he could be a professor. She wasn’t sure what it was that he had planned, because it sounded, to her, like he wanted to teach at their alma mater, but was he planning on getting his masters while working as an Auror or did he assume his fame would see to him getting the position? That didn’t sound like Harry Potter at all.
The door to the compartment that Hermione was sitting in opened up. She looked out the window first, surprised to see that the world was flying by, and they’d left the station while she was musing over what Harry intended to do to become a professor. Hermione looked, next, at the door and fought very hard to keep her mouth from dropping open at the sight before her. A man her age was standing there, he had evenly tanned skin with golden blonde hair, kind and sparkling sky-blue eyes and a relieved smile pulling at the corner of his mouth. A mouth, she noted, that had full lips and she could see the start of some dimples that were hidden near the corner of his lips.
“Sorry if I startled you” He said, he had an American accent, and he was finally, fully smiling at her. It was the type of smile that would make any hot-blooded woman weak in the knees. His dimples had deepened, and his lips stretched and parted to show straight-white teeth “I’ve been to about twenty different compartments looking for the other adults I was told I’d be traveling with...some of the young ladies were very...forward”
“Oh” Hermione said stupidly, she wasn’t usually so tongue-tied, but he caught her by surprise “I’m sorry, they’re...young” She wanted the floor to open up and drop her under the train and leave her outside in the wilderness, she hated being so awkward.
“Mind if I sit here?” He asked.
“Not a problem” She said, moving her bag off of the seat across from her “My names...”
“Hermione Granger” He said “I know”
“Oh, war stories, huh?” Hermione asked, with a small sigh.
“No” He answered “Headmistress McGonagall told me that there were two adults on the train, other than me. One Draco Malfoy, the Potions apprentice and the other was Hermione Granger, the Charms apprentice and you don’t look like a Draco Malfoy to me”
“No, I’m definitely not” Hermione said a little bit harsher than she intended, she offered a smile to soften her words “Sorry, I know Malfoy” She added a little darkly, she didn’t know that he was going to be at Hogwarts as well.
“I’ve read about him” The man said, his eyes opened a little wider “My goodness, I forgot to introduce myself, I’m Donovan”
“Donovan” Hermione said “You have a last name, or is that your last name?”
“It’s just Donovan” He told her with a secretive smile “I hate my first name” He confided “You’ll never learn it”
“A mystery” Hermione smiled flirtatiously “Your American, Mr. Donovan, so you wouldn’t understand just how good I am at solving mysteries”
“Oh, I think I've got a pretty good idea” He said with a small smile.
The door slid open and then slammed shut, Hermione looked over and felt her eyes narrow in instant dislike as she recognized the white-blonde hair of Draco Malfoy. Hermione knew that her dislike of the blonde Slytherin had almost nothing to do with their hatred for one another in school. No, her dislike was actually much more petty than that, her first year at University had been Malfoy’s as well. No, he hadn’t helped set the school back up, he’d been attending trial after trial, trying to clean up the Malfoy name. Finally, a year later he’d been able to go to University, to pursue his education and it appeared that without his friends, without his father breathing down his neck and without his mother to worry about, Draco Malfoy was a scholar that Hermione Granger had to worry about. She never fell too far behind him, of course, but she was either right behind him in the classes, just above him or tied with him. She’d had to study harder than she’d ever had to study before and for that first year she never got to enjoy time away from the books. Hermione had always assumed that was the kind of experience she’d wanted at Hogwarts, but having to fight so hard to keep her grades made her angry instead of invigorating her. She was used to being the best and the idea that someone, especially Draco Malfoy, was very nearly besting her, angered her more than ever. Then, for his second year, he’d gone to a magical University in Germany, and she didn’t have to fight him for the top spot again.
“Morning” Draco greeted with a grin “How are you, Granger?”
“I’m good, Malfoy” She answered, more chill in her tone than she intended “You?”
“Happy to be home” He answered, he dropped down next Donovan and looked at him “And who are you?”
“Donovan” He answered “Apprenticing under Professor Sinistra” He looked at him before adding “Ancient Runes”
“Oddly enough” Draco said sarcastically “I know what she teaches”
“Be nice” Hermione snapped “He’s new, he never went to Hogwarts and didn’t know that we went there” She smiled at Donovan “Don’t mind, Malfoy, he’s notoriously unfriendly”
“And don’t mind Granger” Draco said, giving her a dark look “She’s a notorious know-it-all and before long, she’ll be telling you facts about America, about your school and about yourself that you’d never known and if those facts aren’t true...well, keep that to yourself because Hermione Granger is never wrong” He smirked at her “Even when she is”
“Oh!” Hermione hissed “And what makes you say that, Malfoy?”
“Just years of watching you argue with professors until you got your way” He answered “And when they didn’t bend to your will, watching you whisper in everyone’s ears until they were well hated, or you finally did get your way...that’s all”
“Why you little pri...” Hermione started, but laughter from Donovan stopped her, she looked over at him in irritation and found him holding his hand over his mouth as if trying to keep the laughter from getting any further.
“I’m sorry” He told them, Hermione gave a quick look over to Malfoy and found the blonde glaring at him angrily “You guys just...wow, when did you guys break up?”
