Chapter Ten –
Control
Past: Second of October
Draco
ran his hand nervously through his hair as he gazed over to the waiting brunette.
He was about to damn his soul to Hell and he knew it. “I – I’ve been thinking”
he started, his voice wavering as he licked his dry lips.
Near
him Harry nodded slowly, his dark green eyes carefully examining the blonde in
front of him. He had been on his way to his dormitory when the blonde Slytherin
had pulled him up and demanded they speak, and now that they were in a spare
class Draco seemed to have lost his cool and was now a nervous wreck.
“This…
prophecy” he said, his heart beating loudly in his chest as his stomach gave an
uncomfortable twist. “I – I… What else do you know about it?” He asked, his
gaze locking with curious green.
Harry’s
brows furrowed as he leaned back against the wall, his arms folding over his
chest. “Why do you wish to know?” He asked with a guarded voice.
Draco
glared at him as his hand automatically raised and moved through his hair
again. “Because Potter. Either tell me what you know of it or I can leave now” he snapped,
not at all in the mood to feel cornered.
Harry
raised a brow before slowly nodding. “It’s called the ‘Se astringo Totus’
as you already know. The ancients used it as a… marriage binding ceremony. I
spoke to Dumbledore about it the other day and he gave me a book to read” he
stated as he pushed himself off the wall and crouched down beside his bag.
Draco
stood impatiently for a few minutes, watching as the brunette searched through
his backpack before pulling out an old book and standing. Eyeing the book with
some distaste and worry, Draco licked his lips as the brunette handed it over
to him, warily he took the book.
“I’ve
read some of it, about fifteen chapters. From what I’ve read there are four
stages - Mind, soul, body and heart” He stated as he once again leaned back
against the wall and folded his arms over his chest.
Draco
frowned, “And how do you complete those stages?” He asked, his mind already
running ahead of him, giving him a gallery of ideas that did not please him in
the least.
What
was worse was that he saw a small blush cross the brunette Gryffindor’s cheeks.
This for obvious reasons put him on edge.
Harry
opened his mouth, still blushing. “Well, the mind and soul are more or less
completed within the ceremony. The… body and heart are… well after the ceremony
they can be completed at anytime” He informed, clearly avoiding just how they are completed.
Draco
frowned warily. “How are the other two completed?” he asked, not knowing if he
wanted to get a response from the blushing Gryffindor.
Harry
ran his hand nervously through his hair. “Um… well that’s done by… other means.
I – I think you should read the book… it’ll explain things better then I will.”
Draco
frowned and looked back down to the book. It seemed to be at least one hundred
years old, the pages were frail and yellow and the book itself seemed to be
falling apart at the spine. He wasn’t sure if he wanted to read it.
“Does
this mean you’re considering going through with the prophecy?” Harry’s voice
brought the blonde out of his worries, making him look up and over to the
curious Gryffindor.
Frowning
and then straightening his stance he made sure to glare at the brunette. “I’m
thinking about it, but that does not mean I will”
he stated, being quick to mention that last section when he saw the hope
filling the brunette’s face.
Harry
nodded in understanding as he picked up his bag. “I understand… Just read the
book… Make sure no one sees you read it” he stated as an after thought as he
made his way towards the door. “Oh, and Malfoy” He said, pausing halfway out of
the room.
Draco
turned around and raised a brow.
Harry
smirked. “Try to keep an open mind as you read the book” he stated before
leaving the room.
Draco
frowned and looked down to the book in his hand, he held it a fair distance
from his body as if it were on fire. He had a feeling he would regret this.
Present: Twenty-first January
It
was at least five-thirty when Harry began to wake up, he tended to be an early
waker when it was not necessary, but when it was necessary for him to wake up
early he always slept in. So when consciousness started to come back to Harry,
as well as an estimate of the time as he cracked open one eye, the boy gave a
groan.
Keeping
his eyes closed he desperately tried to call back the dream land, beside him he
could feel Draco sleeping. Giving a small sigh he opened his eyes and looked up
to the ceiling.
He
had dreamt of the blonde beside him, thank Merlin it wasn’t an uncomfortable
dream, or else he’d be struggling to get out of the bed and into a cold shower.
Frowning
he tried to think back over the dream. Draco had been in it, as well as
Dumbledore. They had been talking to the elderly man about the bond, but he
couldn’t remember why or what exactly the details of their discussion had been
about… But he could remember the kiss…
Hearing
a small groan come from beside him, Harry turned his gaze from the ceiling and
onto the blonde Slytherin beside him. He was sleeping on his side, facing him.
His legs were intertwined with his own, and one of his arms was draped over his
chest.
He
really did look more peaceful when he was sleeping and more approachable too,
he guessed it had something to do with the fact that his mouth wasn’t moving
and words weren’t coming out.
Letting
out another small sigh he turned his attention back to the ceiling. He could
feel the bound, the pull of want and need settling in his chest, he fought with
his gaze to keep it on the ceiling and tried to keep his attention elsewhere,
like Ron’s snoring or Millicent’s small sighs as she shifted around on the bed
near him… Anything but the warm body pressed against his.
He
felt like just closing his eyes and hoping it’d all just go away and he’d wake
up around seven to Blaise and Ron bickering, or Hermione telling them all that it
was time to get up and ready… Anything… But instead Hermione continued to
sleep, Ron only murmured about candy as he rolled over and Blaise stayed silent
and unconscious… There didn’t seem to be any help coming any time soon.
Beside
him Draco gave a small sigh as he shifted himself closer still, his ankle
hooking over Harry’s leg in what could be a strong hold, his face nuzzling into
the side of the brunette’s arm as he slowly settled back down.
Things
weren’t going well within himself. He could feel the
bond now reacting strongly to the feeling of its other-half close by, and with
all it had been through within the week Harry found it hard to fight the slowly
growing pull for completion.
He
wouldn’t’ give in though, and he knew just how to save himself from once again
jumping the unsuspecting blonde.
Nervously
he shifted himself, purposely making sure to bump into the Slytherin as he
moved. He waited patiently as a small frown crossed Draco’s face, nothing.
“Malfoy…”
The Gryffindor whispered as he once again shifted and bumped the Slytherin.
Once again a frown marred the blondes face before he stilled. Sighing in
annoyance, Harry shifted the arm that Draco was snuggled against a little more
violently, successfully achieving his goal.
“Wha!” Sitting up Draco frowned
sleepily as he looked down at Harry. “Potter, what the
hell!?” He hissed as he quickly shifted himself back, placing a good
length between them.
Both
ignored the coldness that engulfed them as the body heat shared between them
vanished.
Sitting
up, Harry frowned. “It was either I wake you up or we both suffer the
consequences” he hissed in return, making sure to keep his voice down so he
didn’t wake anyone.
Draco
glared but stayed silent as he shifted himself into a comfortable position on
the bed. Things didn’t seem to be going right for him, Potter and him were at
each others throats nearly twenty-four seven and if they slept in the same bed
they woke up in each others arms… things like that weren’t meant to happen. You
weren’t meant to wake up in the arms of your enemy, bonded or not, it just
didn’t make things feel right.
Sighing,
the Gryffindor settled himself back on the pillows and looked up to the
ceiling. “Malfoy?” He asked softly, making sure his
voice wasn’t loud enough to be carried around the room.
“Hm?”
Shifting
onto his side, the brunette glanced over to the Slytherin. “Do you think we’re
going to get through all this… without completing the bond?” He asked with heat
rising to his cheeks.
Draco
stiffened for a while before forcing himself to relax and close his eyes.
“Honestly? I have no idea… We’re going to go through hell within the next year
with the war and all… and we may be… forced to take that step for comfort or
duty” He said, ignoring his own blush as he opened his eyes and looked up to
the ceiling.
Licking
his lips, the brunette nodded in understanding as he turned onto his back. “For
the sake of our sanity, I hope not” he murmured before turning his back on the
blonde. “Good night Malfoy.”
“Hm.”
oOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOo
“Here, what about this?” Ron suddenly asked as he pulled
back from the pages. Some of the occupants in the room jumped at the sudden
breakage of the silence, Blaise and Millicent turned glares onto the red-head
but he was too busy showing his find to Hermione to notice.
Following
Ron’s finger as he showed the paragraph, Hermione closely read the words, a
frown marring her face as she soaked in the contents, on the lounge in front of
them, Harry and Draco watched with frustration and inpatients, both itching to
hear the find.
Finally,
after a few minutes, the girl pulled back with a frown before shaking her head.
“That wouldn’t help. Malfoy and Harry aren’t actually in love so it wouldn’t work. This takes their love and turns it
around into hate… It’s an enemies way to destroy them” Hermione stated as she
looked strangely at Ron, trying to figure out how he read the words to even
consider it was helpful.
Frowning
the red-head looked back to the book, “What? Bu-but I thought it was talking
about…” Trailing off he brought the book back towards himself, his eyes already
dancing over the words, re-reading his discovery with a frown.
Draco
frowned as he leaned back and glanced to Harry who looked equally annoyed.
Their hopes had literally sky-rocketed at Ron’s excited call, and with one
shake of Hermione’s head their hope came crashing down leaving depression in
it’s absents.
“Perhaps
it’s time to take a break, it’s obvious the hours of study has gone to
Weasley’s eyes” Blaise said as he stood from the desk he was sitting at and
stretching.
“I-
But…” Ron sputtered as he pulled the book closer and began re-reading the
paragraph once again. “I swear it said stuff about diminishing the pull of the
bond… I swear…” He trailed off with a confused frown, this time while
re-reading it he kept his fingers under each word as he read them, trying to
see if somehow he was reading the words correctly.
Hermione
gave the red-head a sympathetic smile as she sat up onto her knees. “Ron,
you’ve been reading for two hours, perhaps we should take a break, get some
fresh air” she suggested as she climbed to her feet and dusted her skirt down.
Draco
closed his eyes and dropped his head back onto the back of the lounge. “I need
a drink” he moaned to himself as he raised his hands and rubbed his eyes with
the heel of his hands.
Harry
nodded in agreement as he marked the page they were at and put it aside.
“Translating for the past two hours has really left me drained. I’m up for a
sleep” he stated as he stood and yawned.
There
was a lot of agreement as everyone stood and stretched, Ron finally gave up on
re-reading the paragraph and also stood up with a yawn as he shuffled forward
and wrapped his arms around Hermione’s waist and buried his face into her neck,
ready for sleep.
Smiling
gently, Hermione patted the red-heads hair. Harry sent her a small smile as he
picked up the four books and put them on the table.
Sometimes
when he saw Hermione and Ron affectionate – like they currently were – it
reminded him that they were all growing up and finding their own paths.
Hermione and Ron where never touchy-feely when it came to their relationships,
they weren’t always kissing and whispering sweet nothings into each others ears
as most other relationships where within Hogwarts, they did hold hands on
occasion but most of the time they just seemed to be content with the knowledge
that they were together… they seemed to take their relationship at a pace that
made them look like they had all the time in the world to take another step…
Harry wounded if it was because they knew they would be with each other for the
rest of their lives or if it was just them…
But
seeing them just standing there, Ron almost falling asleep standing up in
Hermione’s arms, it just always seemed to hit him that his friends were dating and that they were content and
happy with one another in such a way that he didn’t feel he could ever
comprehend… they were so relaxed around each other, they weren’t all over each
other… They were just there, in each others presence and content with it.
Just
to think that Ron was your average teenage boy, with hormones and all, it
seemed to make it impossible, most other teenage boys where coping gropes from
their girlfriends and always convincing them to sneak off with them.
Shaking
his head he turned his attention away from the couple and onto the three
Slytherins that where now sitting on the lounge - Millicent beside Draco while
Blaise sat beside her, on the arm of the chair - talking.
Draco
kept his eyes closed as his friends congregated over to him, he felt Millicent
place her hand on his shoulder and he opened his eyes to look at her.
“We
haven’t had time to talk privately… Pansy’s been telling us to get a hold of
you to tell you that she wants to meet, you pick the place and date” the girl
said nervously with a look towards Blaise.
His
heart increased in pace as he closed his eyes again. Pansy.
Great. Resting his head back against the lounge once
again he pinched the bridge of his nose. “I’m guessing she wants some…
information?” He asked as he opened his eyes and looked to the girl, she
nodded. “Fine. Fine…. I’ll talk to Potter about it
later, we’ll figure something out then” he stated.
Blaise
cast a small glance towards the Gryffindor’s before sneering. “Gryffindor’s are
too open with their feelings, always showing others their weaknesses” He stated
with a shake of his head as he turned away from Hermione and Ron’s romantic scene.
Draco
looked over before chuckling and shaking his head. “Well be glad we aren’t in
Gryffindor, or else we’d all be hugging confessing our friendship and love to
one another” he stated as he shook his head.
Composing
herself before she shuddered in disgust, Millicent nodded quickly with
agreement, not even daring to look towards the two love birds. “Let’s not talk
about them” she stated, her gaze levelling on Draco, taking in his mussed hair,
ruffled clothes and tired gaze. “You look a mess, how are you coping?”
Raising
a brow Draco smirked, “After saying the Gryffindor’s show too much emotion you
ask me that?” Chuckling he shook his head, “Maybe we’re just as bad as them…”
he mused.
Jabbing
the blonde, Millicent glared at him, “I’m serious, you
look a mess! You’re always pristine, and now you look like you’ve hardly slept
and just woken up and come out here…” she said with a disapproving look.
“Potter hasn’t been giving you a hard time, has he?”
Glancing
over towards the Gryffindor, Draco noticed him already sleeping on the floor in
front of the fire. Shaking his head he looked back to Millicent. “No… Surprisingly
enough he’s been fine… We’ve had a few hitches
but we’re both handling this well enough as can be expected.”
“Do
you suppose you two will get through this?” Blaise asked as he leaned back on
the lounge and balanced himself more firmly on the chairs arm.
Draco
raised a brow and was once again reminded of Harry’s words, asking if they
would get through the war without binding completely. He sighed as he looked
back to the sleeping Gryffindor. “I don’t know… I hope so.”
‘Potter? You asleep?’
Blaise
nodded as he also looked over to the brunette who was stirring. “Perhaps you
could just jump the Dark Lord now and be done with it” he mused allowed, his
gaze still on the brunette.
Draco
chuckled. “Yeah, and be killed before we
even get our wands out of our pockets.” Shaking his head he gav
a small amused smile to his friend before looking back to his bound partner. ‘Potter, wake up’.
“What
is our plan with your bond and the war anyway?” Millicent suddenly asked with a
bemused look. Both boys looked to her with raised brows. “What? Oh come on! I
was listening; I know that this is meant to be an element of surprise and the
fact that with this bond in place between you and Potter it doubles your powers
to make you more than a match for the Dark Lord… I just want to know how this
is all meant to be brought forward towards the… fight” she stated with glare to
each teen.
Draco
ran his hand through his hair and turned his attention back to Potter who
seemed to be a little more restless as he shifted onto his back and threw his
hand over his chest. “We’re waiting for the opportune moment. Until then Potter
and I are going to practice and hopefully get more… stable with our situation”
he stated as he slowly stood up and walked over towards the Gryffindor.
“Draco…Where
are you…?”
Walking
towards the still sleeping, but stirring, Gryffindor, Draco felt some kind of
rousing in his chest, it was like his heart was being gripped in water…. It
felt odd. Since he had looked up and over to the sleeping teen he felt the
emotion, at first he had hoped that if he woke the boy up the feelings would go
away, but it seemed the brunette was refusing to wake up. So now Draco felt
like he was being suffocated like a lullaby by water, he hardly felt there… if
that was understandable.
With
a small frown and the distant knowledge that Blaise was now calling him and
looking at him oddly, as well as the rest of the occupants, Draco kneeled
beside Harry and looked down into his sleeping face with an absorbed
expression.
Potter
was lying on his back, his arm thrown over his chest while his other arm laid
by his side, his head was turned to the side; a small frown was on his face,
his lips parted. He looked… different.
Slowly
he shifted himself so that he was sitting beside the Gryffindor, the side of
his thigh pressed against Harry’s waist. Leaning forward slowly he watched as
his face grew closer to the other boys, his eyes flickered towards the parted
lips before he looked back towards Potter’s still closed eyes.
Within
him the feeling of water around his heart lessoned and instead it seemed that
his insides were swimming, he was nervous. He could feel that he was doing the
right thing; he could feel relief settling on his shoulders as his nose brushed
against Harry’s.
This
was what he wanted… What his bond wanted. He felt his body relaxing; he could
feel his heart pulling him impossibly closer towards the brunette, so close
that he wasn’t sure if his heart was still within his own body as he tilted his
head to the side.
He
heard some yelling, it sounded like fighting but he ignored it as he heard a
gasp, making his eyes flicker open to meet with surprised green. For a while he
was startled and almost pulled back but before he did Harry shifted and grasped
Draco’s bicep, pulling him closer instead.
Even
if he hadn’t been pulled closer by the Gryffindor, Draco felt sure that he
would have eventually moved closer… the bond seemed too strong at the moment to
even consider fighting.
Their
lips met.
As
soon as he felt the interment touch Draco’s eyes closed firmly as he moaned and
pushed himself closer. The hands clutching his biceps tightened and pulled
down. Beneath him Harry arched and opened his mouth, begging for access that
Draco didn’t dare deny.
Within
moments the blonde had his leg over the Gryffindor’s chest and straddled him,
the kiss becoming fiercer with each passing second.
In
his chest, his heart seemed to suddenly lift and as it did warmth spread
throughout his body, making him moan. Heat was rushing through him, making his
brow break into a sweat. The pulling that had been bugging him since he had
spotted Potter sleeping had vanished and in its place was a sense of
accomplishment and right. This was where he belonged, with his partner and not
fighting the bond, or so the bond told him.
Potter’s
hands left his arms and moved up into his hair, pulling him impossibly closer
as he tried to deepen the kiss, and than just as
quickly as it had all started it stopped with a sudden pull.
Draco
felt himself being thrown off Harry; he landed heavily on his side,
successfully getting carpet burn to his elbow, he was at least a meter away
from his original position, at least a meter from Harry…
Blinking
rapidly he pulled himself clumsily to his knees, his fingers moving into his
hair, tugging them as he looked at his knees in shock. He had kissed Potter. He did! Potter hadn’t initiated the
kiss, he had! He had kissed Potter!
“M-mate…
you okay?” Ron asked as he leaned over Harry, his eyes searching him worriedly,
his freckles standing out like mud in a snow field against his pale and
slightly green tinged skin.
Harry
blinked rapidly, his hand slowly moving to his lips and then up to his hair
where he dragged his fringe back, letting out a shaky breath. “I-I’m fine” he
stammered as he tried to sit up with Ron’s help.
Green
eyes looked over to the shaking blonde. What had happened?
Hermione
slowly moved forward, her calculating brown eyes moving from Harry to Draco.
“What happened?” She asked, directing her question more towards Malfoy then
Harry.
Looking
up, Draco shook his head, his eyes still wide. “I don’t—I just looked over to
him and it seemed like everything just dimmed and I wasn’t… me” he spoke with a
distant voice, his breath shaky as he pushed his hand through his hair again.
Millicent
and Blaise moved over to him and helped him to his feet, stabling him when he
swayed. “What do you think happened?” The Slytherin girl asked as she looked
over her still shaken friend then back towards the Gryffindor who was still on
the ground.
Hermione
shook her head, her eyes moving frantically between the two before she seemed
to snap suddenly and lock with Harry’s. “The bond!”
She cried with hysterics.
Harry
frowned.
“What?”
Blaise asked as he guided Draco to a chair.
Hermione
began to pace. “Draco, would you say you felt somewhat… controlled?”
“I—I
guess so… But it was strange, not like the imperious curse… I felt more in
control just as much as I wasn’t” he stated with a shake of his head.
Hermione
nodded, seeming to understand the words that brought a confused frown to
everyone else’s faces. “It was the bond!” She stated easily, calming down. “I
read it in one of our sources a few months ago. The bond, if
the third step is partly initiated but then denied to be finished, if the bond
is strained enough… than it will take control and… finish the deed.”
Harry
shot to his feet. “What! Why didn’t you mention this to us before?” He
demanded.
The
girl raised a brow. “I did warn you, remember? I read it allowed to you and if
I remember correctly you’re response was something like it’ll never be
initiated in the fist place, so it doesn’t matter” she stated with a ‘You
should have listened to me’ look.
Draco
dropped back on the lounge. “So what? The bond is
going to take control and force us
to… to have sex?!!” He almost
squeaked, his eyes flashing open and locking onto Hermione, “All because we’ve
been through some stressful moments?”
The
brown haired girl rolled her eyes. “Will you stop skiting around the obvious!” She snapped as she moved around to the fireplace
and turned to address both boys with a serious expression. “Sexual tension has
been building between you two. You had initiated the third step of the bond by
kissing and now every time you feel the urge to kiss, touch or do whatever you
push it away, and then there’s the everyday stress on top of that. The bond has
more or less taken control because of self preservation for the both of you”
she snipped with her hands landing on her hips.
“I
warned you of this! I told you that this would happen! I tell you that you
should be careful of something and you both just brush it aside as if it’ll
never happen!”
Draco
glared at her. “That’s because it won’t!”
“Oh
for--” Throwing her arms into the air and rolling her eyes skyward as if begging
for help, Hermione turned her fawn eyes onto the two boys. “In order for this
binding charm to work there had to be something
there! There had to be some kind of chemistry to be able to successfully
bind the two of you! Don’t you dare roll your eyes at me! I’ve told you both
this a million times already and still you refuse to see what’s flashing in
front of you with neon colours!! Even Dumbledore stated that in order for the ‘Se astringo Totus’ to work there has to be something there!” She
shouted in frustration at the two stubborn teens.
Blaise
stood up to Draco’s defence, a glare matching Hermione’s. “And there is!
There’s hate!! Dumbledore also said that whatever could be there didn’t have to be love or likeness or even
fondness, just an emotion that was shared equally between them, and they both hate each other!” He snapped.
For
a while the girl was silent, for a moment Harry and Ron through she had been
stunned to silence – something that would almost be new for her – but then she
huffed and turned, grabbing her bag. “Fine! I don’t
care! Don’t believe me! Live in denial since you all seem to be so comfortable there! But remember
Dumbledore’s words the day before the ceremony” She warned, glaring at each
individual before she turned on her heals and left the room, slamming the
portrait behind her as she did.
Silence
fell over the five occupants, each stared at the door.
“We
should go. I don’t really feel up to sleeping in here. Pansy will start to ask
questions” Millicent said as she suddenly stood and flattened her skirt. Near
her Blaise nodded and also stood, picking up both their bags and escorting the
girl towards the exit, before they exited however, Millicent turned and looked
over towards Draco. “I may not want to agree with that know-it-all, but she
does seem to have a point. Just be careful Draco” she warned before nodding to
the two Gryffindor’s and leaving with Blaise.
More
silence fell onto the room.
“Uh—Do you want me to stay?” Ron asked nervously as he looked
towards Harry.
Tiredly
Harry just shook his head. “No. I’ll be fine. I’m going to go to bed… I’ll talk
to you tomorrow” he stated.
Ron
nodded, made a step towards the exit and then turned back towards his best
friend. “Just… try and fight it. After the war you can reverse the binding
charm… Just try to remember that if you complete this thing there’s no turning
back” he warned before giving Harry a small smile. Turning he
also left the room, causing an uncomfortable silence to fall over the remaining
two.
Draco
shifted in his seat and looked towards the opposite direction of the room. He
felt his cheeks flushing and he could feel Harry’s eyes on him for a few
seconds before the feeling left him.
“Let’s
get to bed” Harry murmured as he walked over towards the bathroom with pyjamas
in his hands.
As
soon as the door closed Draco stood to his feet and walked over towards his
bed. He had been weak! He had done what he had thought he would never do… He
had disgraced himself.
Changing
quickly into his pyjamas, Draco climbed into his bed, with a sigh. Things were
going to get harder, and he wasn’t sure he was prepared for it.
As
Harry climbed into his bed and the lights turned off, silence once again fell
on the room before Draco spoke up.
“Potter?”
“Hm?”
“Do
you think Granger’s right?” Draco asked as he shifted onto his side, his back
to Harry.
“Honestly?
I have no idea. She tends to have a knack for being right though” he chuckled
with little humour. “We’ll just have to be more careful. If the bond is
determined to be completed we may have to expect more scenes like earlier” He
stated, embarrassment lacing his words.
Draco
closed his eyes and fought back his blush. “I hope she’s wrong” he mumbled.
“Me too”.
‘My boys, the Se astringo
Totus was
created by people of peace. Hate is not something this spell is designed to
bind…’
