Words were exchanged

Chapter 10
Words were exchanged

Blaise Zabini walked into Advanced Potions and took his customary seat at the back. Draco was already there, and from the nervous looks he was surreptitiously casting in Blaise’s direction, he could feel his anger.

“Blaise I wonder…,” Draco started.

“Not here. Not now.” Blaise hissed at him. “After class, you know where.”

Draco nodded shortly. At least he wasn’t going to have to wait. The waiting was the worst part. Never knowing, always having to be on the alert. His father had taken great pride in the ‘training’ he had given his only son. ‘The sodding bastard,’ thought Draco sourly. Somehow this thought led him to root around in his bag for the letter with his father’s distinctive hand on it.

Snape was up at the front writing on the blackboard, so Draco took a chance that his actions would go unnoticed. He broke open the seal and took out a letter.

Draco,

I understand that broken down old fool has made you Head Boy. Perhaps he is finally coming to understand that blood always wins out.

As today is your birthday, you will be receiving a package from Grandfather’s solicitors. I had hoped to speak to you of this matter in person, and in private, but it unfortunately was not convenient. There is a set of very valuable antique jewels that contain dangerous old magic that has been in the family for almost 500 years. Do not touch the jewels, and under no circumstances place any of the pieces on another person.

I will know if you disobey me.

Father

Draco resisted the urge to give a primal scream at this missive. He recited in his head what he would, at one time, have given all his Galleons and his left one to hear from his father.

Dearest Draco,

Congratulations on being made Head Boy. I am so proud of you. I always knew you could do it. Happy Birthday! I wish I could be there to celebrate with you.

Love always,
Father

As much as Draco knew that it was impossible to change the past, he was rather wistful at times when he remembered how things had been when he was small. Just a young boy who basked in the love and attention of his parents. His mother had been so beautiful. She was still beautiful, if he was honest with himself, but somehow, when he focused his mind on his memories of her, he could barely make her out. When had that started happening? Why couldn’t he remember her face?

“Mister Malfoy,” Snape silkily said from about two feet away, “Perhaps you would be good enough to pay attention in my class.”

“Yes, Professor,” Draco said, stuffing his father’s letter into a pocket. But Blaise had seen the letter and knew who it was from.

‘Could this day get any more complicated?’ Blaise thought wearily.

Blaise followed Draco to the dungeon room he thought of as ‘their’ room right after class. He had given Hermione a reassuring smile at her worried expression before he had spun on his heel and departed.

Blaise closed the door behind him, casting locking and silencing spells as he advanced on Draco. Draco was looking at the floor, but from the glazed expression in his eyes, Blaise wasn’t sure he was really seeing it. With an almost catlike grace, Blaise slammed Draco against the wall and put his wand to his throat.

“Listen carefully and listen well, Draco. I have placed Hermione under my protection. If I ever see that look in her eyes placed there by you again, I will kill you. Do you understand?”

Draco’s eyes had widened when he heard that Blaise had taken such a step. He knew that Blaise was not exaggerating when he had threatened him with death. Anything less than death would have dishonored Blaise.

“Blaise, I know I was thoughtless, but I never meant to hurt her. I love her, and I told her so. I was just teasing. I had expected that she would have a quick response, and that we could perhaps start this morning off right,” Draco asked for understanding.

“Hermione is very innocent. She didn’t see it as teasing between two people who love each other. She thought she was being lumped together with the many other girls you have, what was it now, ‘shagged and then kicked out of bed.’” But Blaise removed his wand from Draco’s throat.

“She told you, did she?” Draco looked shamefaced. “As soon as the words left my mouth, I knew they were a mistake, but she wouldn’t listen to me.”

“Draco, correct me if I am wrong, but in this very room we agreed to try to make her ours. If you would like to step away from that agreement, I will happily take your place, and this matter will be concluded.”

“Is that what Hermione wants?” Draco questioned.

“No, actually, she has deep feelings for you, and is willing to give you another chance,” Blaise shook his head, wondering if he was being a fool.

“Are you willing to give me another chance too, Blaise?” Draco wisely knew that the question needed to be asked.

Silence.

“Yes, Draco I will give you another chance. Just one,” Blaise said heavily. “Unfortunately, I fear that that we have other business to discuss. You have heard from your father.”

“Here, read it yourself,” Draco gave Blaise the letter.

“What type of old magic, do you know?” Blaise asked.

“No idea. I’ve never known my father to turn his back on powerful old magic.”

Blaise’s lips curved into a cruel imitation of his smile, “I imagine not.”

Draco took out another of the letters that had been delivered that morning. “I haven’t finished reading my mail, but this one from the solicitor says that a courier will deliver the package tonight to the Headmaster’s office at the Head meeting tonight.”

“Not too much longer to wait then, Birthday Boy,” Blaise gave him a real smile this time.

“Hasn’t been much of a happy one so far,” Draco said grumpily.

“Perhaps we should try to find the Head Girl and see if you can beg for her forgiveness.” Blaise wasn’t really asking, and Draco knew it.

“That does sound like a fine idea.” Draco held out his hand to Blaise. “A new beginning?” he asked.

Blaise shook his hand, to Draco’s relief. “A new beginning,” he agreed.

Lyndie578 – My muse isn’t talking to me right now. Or maybe talking is all she’s doing. I do promise action in the next chapter.
