Chapter 9: Celebrating the Birth of Chaos
Harry stared at the man kneeling
on the floor beside him. Sirius had not
changed from the last time Harry saw him, falling through the veil. He hardly dared believe that his sister
actually managed such a thing as to return his godfather from the dead.
“Harry,” Sirius said again. His
voice was a bit shaky. “What…What’s
going on?”
Harry wasn’t sure where to start. Did Sirius realize that he had been
dead? “What do you remember?”
“I keep seeing flashes…spells,
like I was in a fight. I remember that
you were in danger, but it’s all so distant.
I was asleep and dreaming of your mum and dad. I dreamt of Regulus…and I think I dreamt of
Dumbledore as well.” Sirius’ eyes seemed
a bit glazed.
Harry reached out an unsteady hand
and placed it on Sirius’ shoulder. When
he could feel the man there, had irrevocable proof that he was solid and true,
he felt able to speak once more.
“Sirius, you weren’t dreaming…you were dead. You’ve been gone over a year.”
Sirius’ grey eyes quickly came
into focus. Harry though that the man’s
face remained quite calm, all things considered. “Dead?”
Harry reached inside his pocket
and pulled out the sealed and shrunken pensieve. Resizing it, he quickly began to add any and
all memories that he though would help his godfather.
“You’re still carrying that
around,” Draco asked with a raised brow.
Sirius jumped, some how having
missed the blond’s presence. “What’s he doing here?”
“It’s all right,” Harry said
softly. “Draco is with us now. Just let me get this ready for you.”
“Who’s the girl?” Sirius had a strangely twisted look of
curiosity in his eyes.
“That’s Eris,” Draco said
helpfully. “Harry’s sister.”
“Sister? But, Harry…”
Harry held up a hand to stop
Sirius. “She’s my twin sister, and I
promise that you’ll understand everything once you’ve spent some time looking
in this.”
Sirius gave the pensieve a dubious glance.
“I’d rather just hear it from you.
And why do you look so…so grown up?
And are your ears pointed?”
“I’ll sit down with you after
you’ve gone through all these memories,” Harry said with a smile. “I plan on monopolizing your time after
everyone gets over the shock of seeing you breathing again. For now though, we have a house full of
people celebrating birthdays and we’ll have to keep you hidden until you’re
able to operate properly with them.”
Harry glanced down at Eris who was
now beginning to stir. Her face was
pinched with exhaustion and he wondered how badly she had depleted her magic to
bring Sirius back. He smiled as she sat
up slowly and immediately began jabbering.
“Harry, did it work? Are you
okay? Is he okay? Did I pass out? Why does my head feel so damn fuzzy? Why is it so bright in here? I think I need a headache potion.”
“Whoa! Easy there, sister,” Harry said with a
laugh. “One question
at a time. But first, how badly
have you reduced your magic?”
Eris chuckled. “Do I look that bad? Don’t worry, I’ll get over it, but I suppose
you now see why this isn’t something that is done very often.”
“Definitely,” Harry said with a
nod. “It’s a good thing that we’re a bit
above average.”
“And that I had
you to help me. A lesser witch
would have died,” Eris said quietly.
“The drain hasn’t affected your
modesty I see,” Draco said with a sneer.
Harry watched Eris carefully. Her eyes were squeezed shut and her breathing
was bit ragged. “Are you sure you’re all
right?”
“Here, let me check her, Harry,”
Sirius said, coming to squat down in front of Eris. “I want to get a good look at this sister
that my best friends apparently never told me about.”
Harry’s smile didn’t last
long. As soon as Sirius took a gentle
hold on Eris’ chin her eyes flew open.
Harry thought she looked like someone who had been surprised by the
sun. Within moments, his sister had
wrenched herself away from Sirius, leapt up, and bolted from the room.
“Er…that
was a bit…did I do something wrong?”
Sirius’s eyes were wide and confused.
Harry sighed. “Well, she doesn’t like to be touched very
much, especially not by people she doesn’t know. I’m sorry, I wasn’t thinking and I should
have said something.”
He glanced over to Draco who was
frowning, seemingly deep in thought. The
blond stared at the place where Eris had sat moments before and then glanced at
Sirius thoughtfully. Harry wished for a
moment that he could know what was going through the blond’s
head. It would do wonders for him when
it came time to avoid being murdered when he announced that Draco was possibly
one of TWO of his predestined mates.
Fate was cruel sometimes.
“I’m going to go check on her,”
Draco murmured and then slipped from the room.
“I’m sorry, Harry,” Sirius said
softly.
Harry felt a great swell of pity
for his godfather. The poor man had to
be desperately confused at this point.
He tried to imagine how he would feel if someone suddenly told him that
he had been dead for a year. How would
Sirius react once he realized all that had happened in that year? At least he’d have help hunting down Snape.
“Don’t worry about it now,” Harry
said and moved the pensieve forward. “Why don’t you get started on this? I’m going to try and get some sleep. We have to celebrate Eris’ birthday in the
morning.”
“So…twins? That’s great, Harry.”
Harry nodded. “After losing you…I didn’t know how to
feel. It was like the only piece of true
family I ever had was torn from me. Remus
is great, but he wasn’t able to be around much.
Then finding out about Eris a few weeks ago after everything…well
everything else that’s come up since we lost you, it was like some sort of gift
from the gods. It hasn’t been easy. There’s something that’s hurting her,
something that keeps her away from me, but we’re getting past it. I can tell.”
Sirius had a solemn look on his
face for a moment, but then broke into a brilliant grin. “Well, I suppose if I’m going to get any
answers from you I had better get working on those memories. You look dead tired so why don’t you crash on
the couch for a bit.”
Harry nodded and moved towards the
couch. He stopped and looked back at his
godfather, knowing he would have to warn him about Dumbledore. Looking longingly at the couch, he decided
that sleep would have to wait just a bit longer. “Sirius, there’s something I need to tell you
before you start and you’re not going to be happy.”
Sirius accepted this announcement
with a grim expression and they proceeded to shortly discuss Harry’s worst
memory from the last year.
When Harry awoke sever hours later
it was to the sound of someone pounding on the library door. As he pushed himself off the comfortable
couch, he gazed at Sirius who was still bent over the pesieve. When he opened the door a crack and found Ron
there he said a silent prayer of thanks that he had thought to erect locking
and silencing charms.
“There you are, mate,” Ron said
with a smile. “Eris is still passed out
on the couch and I remembered that you wanted to make her breakfast.”
Harry bit his lip for a
moment. “Yeah, I still want to do that,
but I need you to go get Hermione and bring her here.”
“No problem.”
Ron set off and Harry stepped out into the hallway, sealing the door
behind him. Within moments Ron returned
with Hermione.
Hermione looked concerned. “What is it?
Did something go wrong with Eris’ transformation?”
Harry shook his head. “Nothing like that,
but it’s still…difficult.”
“Well spit it out, Harry,” Ron
said impatiently.
“Do you remember the Necromancy
book that I found in Eris’ things?”
Both of his friends nodded with
eyes wide. Hermione was trembling a bit,
but her eyes were conveying a familiar eagerness. “What did she do?”
“She gave me a present.” Harry swallowed hard. “She’s brought Sirius back.”
If he hadn’t been so worried about
the situation he might have laughed at their gobsmacked
expressions. The pair resembled landed
goldfish.
Ron looked a bit scared. “Harry, but…”
“Don’t worry, Ron. She didn’t make an Inferius
out of him.”
“This is amazing! She let me take a look at the book and from
what I read Sirius would have had to have been preserved perfectly. Any decomposition, even just a few minutes,
can seriously deteriorate the brain and other important major organs.” Hermione had a faraway look that told Harry
she was re-reading The Necromancy of
Elves in her mind’s eye.
Ron spoke exactly what Harry
himself was wondering. “But, ‘Mione, Sirius has been gone for over a year. He…well, he shouldn’t be in any condition.”
“The veil,” Hermione said
softly. “Where ever it sent him, his
body must have been preserved. Oh Harry,
she must have been terribly drained.”
Harry frowned. “She was acting a bit strangely once she came
to. She ran off when Sirius tried to
talk to her, but Draco was going to keep an eye on her.”
Ron wrinkled his nose, but his
tone was joking. “You must be happy if
you’re letting Malfoy watch over you sister.”
Harry shrugged. “There’s something else. She asked me to promise her something, but
she said she didn’t want me to feel obligated because of her gift.”
Ron snorted. “She’s gifted you with a great deal of magic,
mate. Any decent wizard would feel
obligated. It’s expected.”
Harry smiled as Hermione shot her
boyfriend a glare. “I would think it
would be Sirius who is in debt to her, but that’s beside the point. What is it that you seem so worried about,
Harry?”
“She wants me to swear an Oath of
Protection for someone, but she wouldn’t tell me who it is.” Harry glanced back at the library door. She must have known that he would do anything
to have Sirius back, but she hadn’t hung it over his head. Of course, she could have been appealing to
his sense of honor.
“Do you think its Malfoy?” Ron looked like he had a bad taste in his
mouth.
“Why wouldn’t she have just said
so? Besides, she’s already protecting
him and he’s on our side now, isn’t he?”
Hermione smiled. “What about Scott? She really seems to fancy him a bit. Maybe she’s worried that he’ll be in danger
because of her once word gets out about who she really is.”
Harry considered this for a few
moments. He had thought that Scott Smith
would be perfectly safe back in America,
but perhaps he was being too optimistic.
Unless the other boy hadn’t really returned home? “I think you might be right.”
“But he’s in America,”
Ron protested.
Harry smirked. “I was thinking the same thing, but what if
he didn’t actually leave?
Ron frowned. “What are you on about?”
Hermione’s face lit up in
realization. “That
ferret! But why would she hide
him?”
Ron laughed. “To get around Madam Prince
of course!”
Harry and Hermione turned beet
red, but Ron just kept laughing. Once they
calmed the redhead down, they decided to go and start breakfast. Harry slipped away for a moment to let Sirius
know that he should stay in the library for the time being. There was some hugging and Sirius sounded
eager to get to know Eris. Harry had to
withhold a snort. Wouldn’t they all like
to get to know the witch? He could tell
that Sirius had yet to witness the events of Dumbledore’s death. Though the wizard already had seen the
members of the Order mourning and the funeral, Harry saved the actual event as
the last memory in the pensieve.
Sirius was, of course, deeply
concerned about the way the loss of Dumbledore was affecting the Order. It didn’t seem to affect the man on a very
personal level however, and for the first time Harry was forced to acknowledge
that not every true Order member had to feel the same level of loyalty and
affection for Dumbledore that he had. He
didn’t find this particularly comfortable, but Sirius and Dumbledore had been on
rocky terms for most of Harry’s fifth year.
Hell, Harry had been as well.
As Harry made his way to the
kitchen and the smell of frying bacon, his thoughts were drawn to Snape. The man had always seemed to have the utmost
respect for Dumbledore and the sentiment was returned. There was meant to be such trust there. How could it have all been an act? Thinking once again of his realization of
Sirius’ true feelings for Dumbledore (mild dislike and annoyance tempered by
deep respect), he knew that he’d rather have people around him who respected
him for who he was than those who loved him for what they thought him to be,
even if it meant he wasn’t very well liked.

Draco gently pushed one long lock
of Eris’ hair behind her ear. He could
hear the muted sounds of the Golden Trio puttering in the kitchen and
smiled. Granger had asked him for a list
of all of Eris’ favorite breakfast dishes.
Breakfast in bed made by someone who cared about her (house elves not
included) was a long time secret wish of Eris’.
She would be deeply pleased, but he was certain she would hide most of
it.
His friend was sleeping so
peacefully now. Her panic towards his
cousin had confused him. She knew who
she was resurrecting and yet she had reacted so strangely. Still, she had passed out from exhaustion
before he could question her. Sleep had
not come fore him. Green eyes and
tousled black hair haunted his mind every time he tried to rest. Besides, Harry would be pleased if Draco
watched over his sister. Perhaps even grateful.
Draco scowled. He hated the feeling that he had been reduced
to desiring to please Ha…Potter. His
homosexuality was something he had privately admitted to himself and Eris over
three years earlier. His mother knew as
well, but thought he was simply young and confused. He too had often wondered, but his attraction
towards good looking men had only grown as time went by. A sneer pulled at his lips when he thought of
the first time that the thought of Harry’s emerald eyes came unbidden to his
mind. That had been late in fifth year,
but that mess with his father had helped to keep him from even considering his
attraction. Still, though he had been
very distracted and distraught all this past year, he had found himself
admiring the Boy-Who-Lived from afar and wishing that he could find a way out
of his involvement with the Dark Lord.
Draco forcefully pushed all
thoughts of his own treachery and longing for a certain green-eyed boy from his
mind. Potter was destined to have a mate, not some fling or boyfriend. Besides, the savior of the wizarding world wouldn’t possibly consider an ex-Death
Eater as a romantic prospect, no matter how temporary his service had been.
He head a soft moan and looked at
Eris to see her eyes fluttering open.
“Are you feeling better, luv?”
Eris shook her head and Draco was
alarmed to see tears forming in his friends eyes. Eris didn’t cry. She didn’t allow herself the show of emotion. This was bad.
“Oh Draco, we have a serious problem.”
______________________________________________________________________
Severus Snape was going to kill
Eris Potter when he got his hands around her slender neck. Hours. He had been locked in a pet carrier for hours.
Heads were going to roll.
It should have been a simple thing
for him to wiggle the lock open even in a ferret’s body. He still had his usual, brilliant mind after
all. But no. No, his sweet, innocent, ‘trust me, Severus’ protégé had placed several strong locking
charms on the carrier door. Without a
wand in this form and unable to change back in such a small space he was
trapped until the blasted girl bothered to return in free him. He really needed to take a firmer hand with
that girl.
_____________________________________________________________________
Eris sat primly on an overstuffed
chair having finished the wonderful breakfast that Harry made her. She had pasted on a smile and thanked him as warmly
as she could. It was so hard to deal
with the way Harry tried so desperately to win her over. When she saw him, Ron, and Hermione parade
out of the kitchen with trays laden with all her favorite dishes -from French
toast sprinkled with confectioner’s sugar to strawberry crepes- she had simply
wanted to cry. She would fight on
Harry’s side for as long as she was able, but she knew in the end his heart
would be broken anyway. And now, after
what she thought would be a simple, trust-winning, act of kindness,
she was doomed to break another heart.
When Eris had opened her eyes
after passing out from performing the soul summoning ritual the first sight to
greet her was Sirius Black, lit up like a super nova. Fate was cruel, twisted, and deranged. She wasn’t able to block out his glow. Even with her Occlumency
shields in place, the dark-haired wizard was surrounded by an ethereal shimmer
that seemed to entrance her and tug at her soul. When he reached out and touched her it felt
as though lightening shot right through her.
A sort of dual panic set in
then. She had a predestined mate and he
had been dead. So, did that mean she had
been meant to be alone and screwed it up, or that she might have had a great
many choices, but the act of performing the summoning charm linked their
souls? Why did life have to be so damned
difficult? She allowed herself a dark
moment in which she longed for the time only two months before when she had
been content with her decision to serve Voldemort and aid in the death of her
twin.
Eris snorted at her own
thoughts. Okay, maybe not content. Resigned.
“What’s so funny?” Eris turned to see Ginny Weasley smiling
gently at her. She was alone. Everyone else (even Draco) was in the kitchen
cleaning up.
“Nothing, just
amusing thoughts. Did Harry
really make the crepes?”
Ginny’s smile turned a bit
sad. “Harry’s been cooking for a long
time. Why do you ask?”
Eris shrugged gracefully. “I’ve just always imagined that they would be
very difficult.”
The redhead sat on the chair next
to her and Eris watched her intently.
She could tell that something was on the girl’s mind. Perhaps she was hoping for Eris to let her in
on whether or not the girl had a chance with Harry. “Eris…are you
okay? I mean really. Harry keeps saying that you’re just
uncomfortable with all of us, but it seems like something else.”
Well, then again, perhaps
not. “What do you mean?”
“Forgive me, but you
look…haunted.” The younger girl got a
fierce look in her eyes then. “I know
you don’t know me very well and I don’t know how much Harry’s told you about
me, but I’ve been through some difficult things. I say you look haunted, because you look like
I did after I went through those things.”
Eris swallowed. When had she become so transparent? Did anyone else suspect that there was more
going on than discomfort? Why hadn’t
Severus and Draco said anything?
SHIT! Severus! “Ginny, would you excuse me for one
moment. I promise I’ll come right back.”
The girl looked a bit hurt, but
nodded. Eris rushed for the transfigured
pet carrier and quickly removed the locking charms. Seve…Nox rushed out and scrambled on top of the carrier. The animagus began
chatting at her furiously and Eris found herself very glad that she couldn’t
understand what he was saying, though she could imagine.
“I’m sorry. Things happened.”
Nox
stilled and the beady, black eyes searched her own. Then the animagus
gave her the slightest of nods and she placed him on her shoulder. He nipped her ear, a bit harder than usual,
and then snuggled into her neck. Severus
was definitely…different as a ferret. He
was also glowing blue. Double shit. Well, it
wasn’t as though she hadn’t seen this coming.
She would need to speak to Harry soon and procure his proffered Oath of
Protection. She just hoped he was
willing to give it to an unknown animagus. She doubted he would believe that their
mentor was a ferret. Even Harry wasn’t
that dense.
When she was settled once again in
her armchair, she cleared her throat and gave Ginny a searching look. “I want you to know that I deeply appreciate
that you not only were able to realize that I’m having…problems, but that you
cared enough to confront me. I realize
that that is probably for Harry’s benefit…”
“Nonsense,” Ginny said
heatedly. “You’re Harry’s sister, he’s
like a member of my family, and I…care about him. That makes you a part of the family as well,
not some thing that is simply attached to Harry that we tolerate.”
Eris felt herself blushing both in
appreciation and shame. How many people
would she leave feeling betrayed just because they wanted to care for her? “Thank you.”
Ginny flashed a cheeky grin. “Oh no, thank you. Hermione and I have been holding our own
against a swarm of boys for years. Tonks
helps, but she’s not quite one of us. We
needed another sister.”
Damn. Those tears were threatening again. What the hell had that transformation done to
her? Where did all these damn touchy
feely emotions come from? She knew that
her magic approved of Ginny for Harry’s sake, but would that affect her mental
state so much?
“Just so you know,” Ginny said
gently. “Fred, George, and Charlie are
going home in a bit so that you don’t feel so outnumbered. I can go too, if you’d like.”
Eris thought hard for a
moment. The more she let them in, the
worse they’d think of her when all was revealed. They’d think she’d been playing them all
along. But, could things really get much
worse? No. She’d take a bit of happiness while she could
get it. “I think I would very much like
it if you’d stay.”
The smile she received warmed her
through and through. If only she could
remain a part of this family forever.
____________________________________________________________________
The afternoon was wearing down and
their breakfast…well, brunch really…had left them all
feeling stuffed and surprisingly energized.
Harry smiled at his sister, who was chatting animatedly with Jackie,
Zack and Miss Roslyn. He hadn’t seen his
sister’s ferret around at all that day, but the pet carrier was empty and Ginny
assured him that Eris knew where the creature was. He was almost certain that it was an animagus, especially since Hermione seemed to agree, and it
was a bit disconcerting that a stranger was roaming, but Eris trusted him. Or her…it really depended on if they were
right about the person’s identity. Of
course, with the way ‘Nox’ acted with his sister, he
was pretty sure it was a man. He wasn’t
about to try and inspect the ferret for bits.
He’d probably lose a finger in the process.
Ron had pulled Ginny from the room
at Harry’s request to explain the fact that Sirius Black was now alive and well
and in the library. Harry wanted his
godfather to come and join them for the rest of the day. They would all be flooing
back to Prince Manor after dinner and Harry knew that Sirius would be swept
away by the Order for all sorts of questioning and briefing. Who knew when he’d get to be with him alone
again?
He heard Eris’ conversation with
her friends become a bit elevated then.
“No!”
“Oh, come on, Eris,” Zack
whined. “It will be so much fun.”
Jackie was following suit. “It will be great. I brought all the equipment along shrunk in
my bag.”
“Guys,” Eris said with a shake of
her head. “I don’t know if I’m up to
this right now.”
“Nonsense,” Miss Roslyn said with
a kind smile. “It’s just what you need
to take your mind off whatever’s making you glum. It’s your birthday, Eris. You’re supposed to celebrate.”
Eris snorted.
Harry stifled a chuckle as Zack
rolled his eyes and continued on in his happily indifferent tone. “Personally, I like to celebrate our personal
goddess of chaos every chance I get.”
Jackie snickered. “She is good at her job.”
“Quite,” agreed Miss Roslyn.
Harry was a bit confused now. “What…”
“Harry,” Hermione said, cutting
him off quickly. “Honestly! Eris was the Greek goddess of chaos and
disorder.”
“Oh.” Harry suddenly felt a bit sad as he thought
back to the memory of his parents naming Eris that he had witnessed in the pensieve. Yes, his
father had been right. It was a fitting
name. “Well, what’s life without a
little chaos to spice things up?”
“I completely agree, man!” Zack shot Harry a grateful look.
“Now what are you three trying to
convince my sister to do now?”
“Well, I’m a fair hand at
charms…” Jackie was cut off by the
snorts of her three companions. Harry
remembered the girl admitting that Charms was her best subject the night
before. “Anyway, I created a game based
on Muggle-born karaoke. I charmed the
karaoke machine to react to a person’s current mood and feelings and it selects
a song that best expresses them. I think
it’s a great act of catharsis.”
“We named it Moodaraoke,”
Zack said with a grin.
“That actually sounds like fun,”
Draco said softly.
Jackie jumped up and went for her
bag. “Great! You can go first.”
Harry bit back a snicker as he
watched Draco pale a bit. Well, the boy
shouldn’t have said anything. He wasn’t
too sure he was keen on singing himself.
He decided to go get Sirius before Jackie could nominate him to be
second. “Eris, could you come with me to
get our other guest?”
Eris didn’t look like she wanted
to come at all, but she rose nonetheless.
They made there way to the library to find Ron and Ginny standing there
arguing. It seemed that Ginny wanted to
get in to see Sirius and Ron didn’t think it was a good idea.
“Don’t worry, Ginny,” Harry said
with a smile. His heart leapt a bit when
the redhead returned it. “We’re going to
bring him out now anyway. Apparently we’re
all going to be singing.”
“You mean they finally convinced
you to play Moodaraoke today?” Ginny directed the question towards Eris and
Harry felt a little wave of happiness wash over him to know that Ginny had been
trying so hard to get to know his sister.
Eris nodded and smirked as Ginny
dragged her brother back to the living room, explaining the basics of Moodaraoke to him all the way in an excited tone. Harry smiled at her when he felt his sister’s
affection for Ginny through the bond.
Her viridian eyes locked with his then.
“Harry, there’s something I need to show you.”
Harry nodded and his eyes widened
with surprised when Eris let loose a low whistle. There was a flash of black fur and the next
thing he knew, Nox was perched on Eris’ shoulder…but
there was something different about him.
He was glowing blue. “Eris…why…what…how?”
“This is who I would like you to
swear the Oath of Protection to.”
Harry stared into his sister’s
eyes and found that they were full of pleading.
This wasn’t making sense. The
blue glow obviously confirmed that Nox was actually
an animagus in disguise, but Scott Smith didn’t seem
to fit the description that Eris had given him of a mentor. He had envisioned someone older. He had thought it would at least be someone
that knew him well. Damn it, he had
wanted it to be Remus.
“Eris, who is it.” Harry tried to keep the suspicion from his
voice and focused hard on not letting his sister feel it through the bond. He wanted to trust her. He needed to.
“I can’t tell you yet,
Harry.” The pleading had spread into
Eris’ voice. “You must realize now that
it’s no one who will hurt you. Harry,
it’s impossible for a mentor to do harm to their charge. They can be strict, harsh, and mentally
tiresome, but they will never, never
hurt their charges physically. I think
handing you over to Voldemort would fall under hurting you.”
Harry bit his lip and thought
hard. He knew Remus and Professor
McGonagall would think it was foolish to enter into this blindly. Sirius probably would too. Ron…Ron would be leery and ask Hermione. What would Hermione think? Hermione would want to trust the books they
had read, but they had all learned to be careful in that department. In this end it was the distinct twinge of
desperation he felt from his sister that clinched his decision.
“What do you need me to do?”
He smiled as Eris smiled in
relief. “Just take a hold of him. I’ll perform the spell and ask the
question. All you have to do is answer yes.”
“Don’t you have to tell me his
real name to have it be binding?”
Eris shook her head. “No, Nox really is
his nickname now so it will stick.
Besides, there’s a loose bond through the mingling of blood. Nothing that even really
registers in your mind without physical contact. It’s meant to let you asses him for
injuries. The bond that will be formed
when you accept him as your mentor will be much stronger and possibly override
it.”
Harry nodded mutely and took Nox into his arms.
The ferret sat stiffly and seemed to be trying to touch him as little as
possible. Harry chuckled. They would have to get used to each other
eventually it seemed. The animagus placed one tiny paw on Harry’s hand and Eris
touched her wand to where their ‘hands’ were connected. Harry felt a tiny pricked and looked down to
see that both he and Nox were bleeding a bit.
“Harry James Potter, do you swear
that you will do nothing to intentionally harm Nox?”
“Yes.”
“Do you swear that you will offer
him sanctuary if he comes to you?”
“Yes.”
“Do you understand that you will
lose your magic if you purposefully break with oath?”
“Yes.”
With that final agreement, a blood
red light ejected from Eris’ wand, winding its way first around the whole of Nox’s body and then working on his own. Harry forced himself to breath properly as
the warm jet of light enveloped him.
There was a slight feeling as though something had clicked within him,
and then he could feel the fact that Nox was
healthy. There was a sense that the animagus was not sleeping enough and was under mental
strain, but didn’t that apply to them all?
When Harry’s magic was assured that Nox was
whole and healthy, he felt a sense of contentment settle over him.
“Well, why don’t you collect Mr.
Black and I will go back and make sure that Draco doesn’t die of fright.”
Harry nodded and handed Nox back to his sister.
“Like they’d let him go before we’re all there to watch.”
Eris smiled and left Harry
standing there, hoping he’d done the right thing. He gathered up Sirius, who was looking rather
calmer than he’d expected to find him after watching his hated schoolmate kill
Dumbledore, but Harry didn’t want to deal with that at the moment. They went to join the others, Sirius somewhat
cautiously. Jackie, Zack, and Miss
Roslyn didn’t seem to find anything suspicious about Sirius and Harry wondered
if Eris had told them what she planned to do for him. It was well known, in Europe
at least, that Sirius had been posthumously cleared of all his former charges
of murder and betrayal. Perhaps they
just didn’t find anything unsettling about sitting down with a man who had been
dead not twenty-four hours before.
Perhaps this was just the sort of thing they had come to expect after
knowing Eris for two years. He wondered
which it was.
“All right, Draco, you’re first,”
Jackie said in a sing-song voice. “Just
hold the microphone for a moment and it will select the song for you.”
Draco frowned and Harry watched
eagerly to see how the blond would react to this situation. There had been some moments lately that he
thought he saw the old Malfoy, but for the most part the ‘Amazing Bouncing
Ferret’ had been trying hard to remain civil and helpful. It was a pleasant change. “What if I don’t know the words?”
“They appear on the screen,” Zack
said helpfully. “Just follow along as
they get shaded in.”
Harry smiled as the blond
swallowed hard and took the microphone in hand.
Sirius leaned in close to him then.
“Harry, you don’t want to look like you’re enjoying this too much. You’re going to have to do this too.”
Glancing to the side, he saw that
Sirius was smirking at him. “Don’t even
think that we’re going to let you off the hook, Sirius.”
The older wizard threw back his
head and let out a bout of barking laughter.
Harry was certain that it was the most wonderful thing he had ever
heard. Then Draco began to sing.
Honey you are a rock,
Upon which I stand.
And I come here to
talk,
I hope you understand.
Green Eyes, yeah the
spotlight shines upon you,
And how could anybody
deny you.
I came here with a
load,
And it feels so much
lighter now I met you.
And honey you should
know,
That I could never go
on without you,
Green
Eyes.
Honey you are the sea,
Upon which I float,
And I came here to
talk,
I think you should
know.
Green Eyes, you’re the
one that I wanted to find.
And anyone who tried
to deny you, must be out of their mind.
Because I came here
with a load
And it feels so much lighter since I met you,
Honey you should know
That I could never go
on without.
Green Eyes, Green Eyes
Oh oh
oh oh
Oh oh
oh oh
Oh oh
oh oh
Oh oh
oh oh
Honey you are a rock
Upon which I stand
Everyone sat still for a moment as
Draco finished his song. Harry simply
hadn’t been able to picture the blond having such a wonderful voice. He simply couldn’t imagine well bred, snide,
proper Draco Malfoy singing. But then,
he never thought he’d be on the same side as the other boy either.
“That was wonderful Draco,”
Hermione said with a bright smile. “What
a nice song to sing for Eris.”
The blond blushed and Harry felt a
small twinge of jealousy that left him uneasy.
Then there was a rush of reassurance from Eris. The song could have just been about their
friendship. Eris had done quite a bit to
protect and ease Draco lately. But,
while his old enemy had been singing there had been a reluctant moment where he
almost wished Draco was singing it to him.
“Next,” Jackie called and everyone
laughed as Zack bound up to the machine.
Harry watched Draco for a moment
longer as the blond went to sit next to Eris on the floor. The pair hugged each other for a moment and
Draco planted a kiss on the witch’s forehead.
Soon, Harry hoped, soon he would be able to do that with his sister too.
Zack made them all laugh as he
sang the song Creep by Radiohead. Harry was a bit worried that the boy might
actually feel that way about himself, but he seemed so…goofy while he was doing
it. Harry slid down to the floor and
scooted over to Eris.
Leaning close to his sister’s ear
he whispered, “Is that how he’s really feeling?”
Eris laughed softly. “No, not really. There’s a small flaw in Moodaraoke
that if you’re a bit of an over exuberant, like Zack, you’ll end up singing
something that you find funny. You
wouldn’t believe some of the things he’s sung.
Personally, I think he and Jackie cheat sometimes.”
Harry chuckled and leaned back
against the armchair where Ginny was sitting.
After a moment, he felt fingers gently carding through his hair and
looked up to see the redhead smiling warmly at him. One of her fingers grazed his cheek and he
felt a jolt go through him. He knew he
wasn’t going to be able to keep her at arms length as he had suggested at
Dumbledore’s funeral. He just hoped that
he’d be able to keep her…all of them safe.
Soon Zack was done and Jackie was
demanding that the birthday girl take her turn.
He smiled encouragingly as Eris made her way reluctantly to the Moodaraoke machine.
She took the microphone and soon the song popped up on the screen. Boulevard of Broken Dreams…he didn’t know it,
but the title left him feeling a bit worried.
Then the music started and he focused all his attention on hearing Eris’
voice and searching the bond for any signal to how she was being affected by
her current situation.
I walk a lonely road
The only one that I
have ever know
Don’t know where it
goes,
But it’s only me and I
walk alone
I walk this empty
street
On the boulevard of
broken dreams
Where the city sleeps
And I’m the only one
and I walk alone
I walk alone, I walk
alone
I walk alone, I walk
a…
Harry bit his lip. Was this how Eris was really feeling? Is this why she was trying so hard to remain
distant and cold?
My shadow’s the only
one that walks beside me
My shallow heart’s the
only thing that’s beating
Sometimes I wish
someone out there will find me
Till then I walk alone
What about Draco? Everyone could see how much the blond wizard
adored Eris. Didn’t she realize that she
wasn’t alone, if only because of him?
And then there was Madam Prince who obviously loved Eris even if she was
a bit strict at times. There was him now
too, didn’t she want to have him with her?
Did she really think she had to go it alone?
I’m walking down the
line
That divides me
somewhere in my mind
On the borderline of
the edge
And where I walk alone
Read between the lines
of what’s
Fucked up and every
things all right
Check my vital signs
to know I’m still alive
And I walk alone
I walk alone, I walk
alone
I walk alone, I walk
a…
How could she be singing these
things? She always seemed so very alive
to him, even when she was trying her damnedest to act as though she didn’t care
about him. Read between the lines of
what?
My shadow’s the only
one that walks beside me
My shallow heart’s the
only thing that’s eating
Sometimes I wish
someone out there will find me
Till then I walk alone
Harry searched their bond as Eris’
voice became stronger and richer. Her
eyes were closed and he smiled ever so slightly at the thought that she
probably knew all these songs. Madam Prince
had told him about his sister’s love for blasting what she called ‘bloody loud
American music’ and singing at the top of her lungs. Hence, the strong and permanent silencing
charms on Eris’ room. Through the bond
he could feel sadness first, but there was something else. He gently pushed deeper, hoping that Eris was
too wrapped up in her singing to notice.
That was when he was hit by the waves of regret and longing tinged with
self-hatred. Something was very wrong
here.
<pI walk
this empty street
On the boulevard of
broken dreams
Where the city sleeps
And I’m the only one
and I walk a…
My shadow’s the only
one who walks beside me
My shallow heart’s the
only thing that’s beating
Sometimes I wish
someone out there will find me
Till then I’ll walk
alone!
Once again the room was silent,
but Harry knew that it wasn’t because of his sister’s voice, not that it wasn’t
beautiful. Eris sang the way she spoke
once her confidence came. Her voice
flowed in warm, rich tones. No, everyone
was worried about the words in that song.
He glanced over at Draco, who had Nox clutched
in his lap. The blond’s
brow was furrowed and there was a deep sadness in his eyes. Harry was almost certain that Draco knew at
least a little bit about what the song meant.
That was when Jackie hoped up
claiming that she wanted her turn. Harry
was surprised when Ginny leapt out of her chair as well, begging for a
duet. Soon they were singing some song
about being a Barbie girl and most of the others were laughing, Eris’ sad song
forgotten. But he wasn’t going to
forget.
While Jackie and Ginny sang in
loud and obnoxious tones to the ridiculous song, Harry moved to sit beside
Sirius. His godfather leaned over. “I’d say there are a few things we need to
discuss with your sister.”
Harry nodded mutely in
agreement. Sirius could help at bit,
though he didn’t know if he was the best choice to handle it. Remus would be excellent, but they would need
Eris to let him in. Of course, she
wasn’t exactly opening up to Sirius either.
Just as Ginny and Jackie began to
improvise an interpretive dance to go along with their tune the fireplace
flared green several times in succession, spitting out another wizard with each
batch of flames. In a few moments, a
good portion of the Order was there. Remus, Tonks, Kingsley, Professor McGonagall, Charlie, Mr. and Mrs.
Weasley, Mad-Eye Moody, and the twins.
Harry jumped to his feet as did
Eris. All of the adults looked grave and
had yet to notice Sirius sitting on the couch.
Remus strode forward and grabbed Eris’ hand.
“Eris, something has happened,”
the gentle wizard said softly.
Harry’s eyes flew back to
Professor McGonagall and she nodded curtly, but he could see the pain in her
eyes. Something had happened to Madam
Prince.
Eris jerked away from Remus,
stumbled, and was caught in Draco’s arms.
Her face grew hard and cold.
“What is it?”
Harry watched as Remus swallowed
hard. “Prince Manor has been
attacked. Felicity was nowhere to be found.”
Eris righted herself and stepped
away from Draco. She moved nose-to-nose
with Remus and when she spoke her voice was deadly. “Was it Death Eaters?”
“The dark mark was in the air,”
Remus said slowly, “but there was no body.”
“That’s because she’s not dead
yet,” Eris spat. There was something
terrible in her eyes now and Harry shuddered from the feelings coming through
the bond. Eris was murderously enraged. She was feeling panicked, confused,
and…betrayed. Harry stood frozen, barely
able to comprehend the discovery he had just made. There seemed to be only one reason why Eris
would feel betrayed by her guardian being taken by Death Eaters.
“Calm down,” Draco said a bit too
sharply and Harry glared at him. The boy
knew. He knew that Eris was associating with Death Eaters even though his
statement under Veritaserum clearing placed him on
their side now. No. No, he had said he was on Eris’ side and
Harry had foolishly thought that meant his side as well.
“Don’t tell me to calm down,” Eris
snapped. Her wand was in her hand now
and she pulled Nox from her shoulder and thrust him
into Draco’s arms.
“What are you doing,” Draco asked
in a panicked tone. “If they took her…”
“Shut up!” Eris seemed to be a completely foreign being
to Harry now. “Just shut up and let me
think.”
Her eyes closed and every eye in
the room was fixed on her. Draco hovered
close to her side, but seemed afraid to touch her. “You can’t Eris! You can’t do what you’re thinking. Remember what...what Nox
said he gave them? You can’t go. You won’t come back.”
Eris’ eyes snapped back open and
Harry saw a feral glow in them. He felt
something that he vaguely recognized as Eris connecting and combing their
magic. “They’re the ones who won’t be going
anywhere. They’ll pay for this.”
Everyone but Harry seemed terribly
confused about what was going on between the pair. Remus tried to sooth the girl again. “Eris, it’s normal to feel like this, but
there’s nothing you can do. We have no
idea where they’ve taken her.”
Eris released a chilling,
mirthless burst of laughter. “You don’t,
but I know.” She waved her wand and a
black cloak and mask appeared in her hands.
It was a black Death Eater mask. Harry felt his heart turn to ice.
No one, not even Mad-Eye, seemed
to know how to respond to this sudden discovery. Only Draco had his voice in that moment. “Are you going insane? They will either kill you or lock you up and
force that potion down…”
“Shut it, Malfoy,” Eris said
coldly. “Don’t let Nox
leave or he’ll just get himself killed.”
She held her wand out threateningly and moved towards the
fireplace. Waves of unrestrained magic
were beginning to roll off of her.
The spell Harry was under was
broken in that moment. He’d be damned if
he’d let his sister go off to either face or join Death Eaters. There had to be a reason. She couldn’t be against them; he wouldn’t be
able to handle it. But it certainly made
quite a few pieces of her puzzle fall into place. He rushed forward and jerked the cloak and
mask from her hands. “How
long.”
“This will have to wait,” Eris
said. She looked him in the eye and her
tone was even, almost gentle. “I’ll tell
you what you want to know when I get back.”
“You’ll tell me now,” Harry ground
out.
Eris closed her eyes. “Two years, Harry. Now I have to go before it’s too late.”
Harry dropped the cloak and mask
to the floor and grabbed both his sister’s arms. “You and NOT going to them. I don’t know if they have you under the Imperius Curse or…”
Eris’ cruel laughter cut him
off. “Imperius? Do
I seem that weak willed to you, brother?
You would have known, Harry, through the bond.”
“There seems to be a lot that
you’ve hidden from me.” He glanced down
at her bare left forearm where the dark mark should have been.
“You won’t find it there, Harry,”
Eris said softly. “I must go now. I’m not letting everything I’ve gone through
go to waste because of some jealous moron who…”
“What,” Harry cried.
Eris closed her eyes and he saw
that she was grinding her teeth. “Not
you, Harry, Travis.”
“Travis?”
“I sent him away that night after
realizing that he’d been set to spy on me the whole time. When he realized that I had Draco he decided
to get me and…someone else in trouble for it.”
Harry’s eyes narrowed. “Who else?”
“Not now.” Eris moved towards the fireplace again, cloak
forgotten on the floor. A new voice
called out to her then.
“You don’t want to do this, Eris,”
Sirius called firmly. “Take it from
someone who has suffered the consequences of acting in the heat of the moment.”
Later, when Harry had time to
reflect, he wouldn’t be certain if Sirius was truly trying to stop Eris, or if
he knew his drawing attention to himself would aid her
escape.
Remus was the first to react. Crying out and rushing to his old
friend. Tonks and Mrs. Weasley
followed. Within moments only Mad-Eye
was guarding the fireplace and watching Eris along with Harry, but it wasn’t
enough and Eris had given up on the fireplace.
His sister bolted from the room, shocking everyone back into action a
few moments too late. Harry was hot on
her heels, trying to get close enough to reach out and pull her back to safety
or punishment or some other unknown outcome, anything but allowing her to go
willing to Voldemort. But it wasn’t
enough. His thoughts were nearly drowned
out by the sounds of people calling to him to drop out of the way so they could
jinx her. Too late he remembered that he
was a wizard and didn’t need to catch up.
Too late, and she was out the door and disapparating
away.
Harry was left standing in the
open door of number 12 Grimmauld
Place with one thought running through his
mind. His sister was a Death Eater.
