CHAPTER TEN
Daniel swallowed nervously. All right, lie! Lie like a dog! he thought to himself frantically. There was no way that he could tell Jack about his life as Harry Potter in front of Snape. He didn't want the man to know for sure. Right now, Daniel was sure Snape was just guessing, trying to distract him, maybe even cause a little chaos. The man loved nothing more than creating chaos.
"Hey, Jack," Daniel said casually.
"Hey, Daniel," Jack replied. "Or should I say, Harry Potter?" he asked whimsically, his eyes cold.
"What do you mean?" Daniel asked, confused.
"This is the second time someone called you Harry Potter. I'm beginning to see a trend here. Is there something you need to tell me, Danny boy?" Jack asked coolly.
"Only that Professor Snape is as crazy as that psycho lady is," Daniel replied adamantly.
"Um"¦" Jack murmured. He walked up the cell and looked at the dark-headed man. He glanced at him thoughtfully and asked, "What makes you think that Daniel is Harry Potter? I thought you said earlier that you didn't believe him to be your missing friend."
"Potter isn't my friend, per se. He was someone that I taught, someone that I trained. I know his body movements, his facial movements. I couldn't be sure until I had a chance to actually study him, but yes, I think Daniel Jackson is Harry Potter," Snape explained.
Jack looked over at Daniel, arched an eyebrow and asked, "Well?"
Daniel shook his head. "I'm not Harry Potter. I am Dr. Daniel Jackson. You know that, Jack. How could I be this Harry Potter, who disappeared five years ago? I was working with you when he disappeared. You know that," Daniel explained desperately.
"Time Turner," Snape exclaimed.
"Excuse me?" Jack asked, confused.
"Wizards have a device called a Time Turner. It gives you the ability to go back in time. The standard Time Turners only allow you to go back several hours or even days, but there are very rare Time Turners that will allow you to travel back years. Harry Potter could've very well have used one to go back several years before you even met," Snape explained.
Jack looked at him skeptically. "Are you telling me that *wizards* have the ability to go back in time?" he asked.
"Yes, Muggle, I believe that is what I said. If you would pay attention the first time, I wouldn't have to repeat myself," Snape snapped.
"Look, Vamp boy, if you have any desire to leave that cell, you had better watch the attitude. I am not in a good mood right now," Jack said coldly. He glared at Snape, who looked at him interestedly. Daniel swallowed when he saw the cold expression on Jack's face. He knew that Jack use to be Special Ops and that he knew several different ways to kill people, but he was so used to Jack being the laid back, mellow, silly man that taunted and irritated many Gou'ald, that he had forgotten just how dangerous he could be.
Seeing Jack now made him realize that there was definitely more to Jack than Daniel would ever know, even though he was Jack's best friend and occasional lover. As Daniel had his secrets, so did Jack.
"Really Jack, do you expect a crazy man to make sense? A Time Turner? A device that travels back in time? How crazy is that?" Daniel asked.
"Can we say -- Ancient time ship?" Jack questioned sarcastically. "If the *wizards* do have a Time Turner, as they call it, it could very well be an Ancient device."
"Fine, but do I look anything like this Harry Potter?" Daniel asked Snape.
"No, you do not. You have brownish hair with blue eyes and your facial features are different. Harry Potter had messy black hair with intense green eyes. The only similarities are your height and the fact that you wear glasses," Snape conceded.
Daniel looked at Jack triumphantly. "See, I'm not Harry Potter."
"Of course, several magical potions can also temporarily -- or permanently -- change one's appearance, thereby making it quite possible for you to indeed be Harry Potter," Snape remarked with a smirk.
Daniel growled. If only Jack wasn't here, he would shoot a well-aimed spell at the man to shut him up.
"Potions?" Jack asked skeptically.
"Yes," Snape replied shortly.
"And do you little wizards get together and brew these potions around a cauldron?" Jack asked facetiously.
Daniel held back a snicker at Snape's glare. "Is there nakedness involved? Do you chant while stirring your brew? Ooohhh, are there orgies?" Jack asked mockingly.
Daniel couldn't help it. He began to snicker, as the expression on Snape's face grew stormier. The man took his potions seriously and to have Jack make fun of them was hilarious. Oh, if Snape had his wand, Jack would be in serious trouble.
Jack glanced at Daniel, grinning mischievously. He turned back to Snape and said, "Let me ask you something. Why would Harry Potter want to leave your esteemed presence? Is he a criminal?"
"Potter is what the Wizarding World would call a hero. He is the Boy Who Lived," Snape spat out, his expression disgusted. "He is now called the Man Who Killed Voldemort, though that may be a little premature," Snape said thoughtfully.
Daniel froze. He couldn't breathe. Voldemort wasn't dead? What? There was no way! The spell he used destroyed the body and the soul. There was no way for him to come back. Daniel peered at Snape, who was gazing at him knowingly.
"Why was he a hero?" Jack asked.
"He killed a Dark Lord at the tender age of one and defeated him again five years ago," Snape explained.
"Do you consider him a hero?" Jack questioned curiously.
"I think him extremely lucky. Of course, there was some of our world who thought he was a killer. Our former Minister of Magic was one of them. They proceeded to make his life hell in the months before his disappearance. Potter finally left when someone harmed one of his friends. I surmise he thought that leaving would help," Severus replied.
"Did it?" Jack asked.
"To some degree. It finally died down permanently when the Minister was found guilty of being a Dark Lord supporter. The only reason for his campaign against Potter was revenge. Once that was known, all the other dissidents faded into the background. Potter's friends have been trying to find him ever since then," Snape added, as he stared at Daniel.
Daniel would have liked to say that he was surprised to find out about Fudge, but he wasn't. He had always thought the man incompetent and the fact the he was a Voldemort supporter was only icing on the cake.
"I see. That sounds like something a hero would do. Placing the life of his friends before his own, saving them from harm. It sounds vaguely familiar," Jack replied as he glanced at Daniel.
Daniel frowned at Jack's comment. "Anyone with a brain and a heart would do it, but that doesn't mean anything. I am not Harry Potter. My name is Dr. Daniel Jackson and no one is going to tell me any different."
Jack leaned against the wall, his arms crossed as he stared at Daniel thoughtfully. He continued to stare as Daniel fidgeted, uncomfortable.
"You don't really believe this, do you, Jack?" Daniel asked his best friend. "I thought you didn't believe in magic? All the things he said that would make me Harry Potter would have to be magic. Hell, you can't even call their wands by their given name. He," Daniel spat as he waved at Snape, "is just reaching. He wants to confuse us, make you lose your trust in me. He's only concerned about getting out of his cell. He's playing us." Daniel glared at Snape and said, "Of course, if he wants out so bad, I'll be glad to let him go, by way of an airlock."
Jack chuckled. "Now, Daniel, don't get pissy. You don't think I know that he's playing us? It doesn't matter if you told me that you were God. I would never lose my trust in you." He walked over to Daniel, reached up and grabbed his neck. He pulled him close and said softly, "I don't care if someone is telling me you are not who you appear to be. All I know is that you're my best friend. No one is going to take that trust away from me. We've been together through too much for me to just discard it over something someone said. You could kill somebody and I would just hide the body for you. Nothing is going to tear us apart."
Daniel swallowed hard. Emotions filled him at his best friend's words. He was so grateful for Jack being in his life. "Nothing?" he asked seriously.
"Nothing," Jack replied adamantly.
"Not even if I told you that I accidentally recorded over your last hockey game?" Daniel asked whimsically.
Jack paused a moment, looked thoughtful. "Well?" Daniel demanded.
"I'm thinking, I'm thinking," Jack replied.
Daniel rolled his eyes. "Well, we're going to be here a while," he said waspishly.
"Hey," Jack cried out.
"That was all very touching, but can we get back on topic here?" Snape demanded.
Jack looked at him, annoyance on his face. "And what topic would that be?" he asked.
"The fact that he *is* Harry Potter!" Snape snarled.
"Ah, that topic. I thought we were over that topic. Daniel? Weren't we finished?" Jack asked mockingly.
Daniel nodded. "Yeah, I'm pretty sure we were," he said cheerfully. "I was thinking of getting some coffee. I think we still have some left. I'm also a little hungry. Want to go?"
"Sure. There's nothing better than the taste of an MRE. Ummm"¦chicken," Jack teased.
Daniel laughed. "Everything tastes like chicken."
They turned to make their way out of the room when Snape yelled, "Potter, get back here. I'm not done with you yet."
Jack stopped, turned around and stomped back to Snape. "Look, Deadboy," he began.
"I keep telling you, you watch too much Buffy," Daniel called out.
"Well, look at him," Jack said as he waved his hand at Snape. "Don't tell me that he
doesn't just scream undead."
"Yes, Jack, Professor Snape is a vampire," Daniel said soothingly.
"Listen to me, you insignificant little Muggle. I'm tired of placing nice," Snape began.
Jack looked shocked. He glanced over at Daniel and asked, "He was nice?"
Daniel shook his head. "Not today. Of course, this could be an off day," he explained sagely.
Jack nodded knowingly. "Ah."
"If you and Potter do not let me out of this disgusting contraption, I will make you regret it. I have tortured greater men than you and I've faced things you couldn't possibly imagine. If you don't release me, you will find yourself not only unable to father children, but I will make every bone in your body break, then burn you from the inside out. Now, RELEASE ME," Snape roared angrily.
Jack looked at him, impressed. "Now, that was one of the better threats I have heard. I think you're right up there with Apophis. There was an actual tremble in my bones, very minute, but it was there," Jack said.
Daniel smirked as Snape became enraged. He stepped forward when he realized that Snape was beginning to glow with power. Crap, he thought he's angry enough to use wandless magic. I need to calm him down before he hurts Jack.
"Jack," Daniel admonished. "There is no reason to tease the prisoner."
Jack pouted a moment before sighing. "You're right. Look, Snape, I'm sure there are similarities between your Harry Potter and my Daniel, but the fact remains, Daniel is Daniel and no one else. He will always be Daniel. I don't believe in magic, I don't believe in Time devices, unless it's in a really cool ship, and I don't believe in potions that can change your appearance. I don't understand why everyone wants to find Harry Potter, when he made the choice to leave, but regardless of the reason, Daniel is not Harry. Find someone else to harass. I'll see about letting you leave. Until then, sit tight," Jack said.
He turned and made his way over to Daniel, who smiled at him. They both made their way back towards the door and were almost out of the room when Snape said, "I should've killed your disgusting godfather when I had the chance. I celebrated the day he fell through the veil."
Daniel whirled around and yelled, "You leave Sirius out of this, you god-damn bastard. He was ten times the man you were! You were just jealous that he was liked and you weren't." Daniel was breathing harshly, his hands clenched as he glared angrily at Snape.
Snape looked at him gently. "I thought we got this taken care of, Harry."
Daniel remembered where he was and swallowed hard. "You bastard," he whispered. "Why didn't you just let me leave? I'm happy, damn it! Can't I finally be happy for once in my life?" he asked, his teeth clenched. "Fucking bastard," he said brokenly as he closed his eyes against the tears that wanted to fall.
His life was over. Jack knew that he was a fraud. Snape knew that he was really Harry Potter. The Ministry would be after to him to take care of their new Dark Lord. They would never leave him alone. Jack would kick him off the team and more than likely throw his ass in jail. He trembled with emotions. His life was over.
Jack walked over to Daniel, pulled him into his arms and held him. He glared at the sheepish looking man in the cell and proceeded to calm his best friend.
"It's gonna be all right, Danny. No one is taking you away from us. Deadboy can back to where he came from and we can go home. You're not leaving us," Jack said adamantly.
Daniel grabbed onto Jack and held tight. He shivered with emotion. Jack hated it when Daniel was like this. He glared once more at the man in the cell and hugged Daniel closer. He heard Daniel mumble and leaned down to listen.
"It's over. My life is over," Jack heard and sighed. He rubbed Daniel's back and said, "No, Danny, your life isn't over. I told you before, you're not leaving us. We already lost you once, we're not about to lose you again. I don't care who are you are or were. You're still my Daniel, my best friend and I swear to you that no one is taking you, even if you have to live with the Nox."
Daniel sniffed as he pulled away. "Really?" he asked.
"Really. And if you don't want to live with the Nox, then I'm pretty sure that Teal'c will let you stay on Chulak," he replied. "Your friends," Jack sneered as he glared at Snape, "would have to get through him first to get to you and you know damn well how ferocious he can be."
"Yeah, and he likes me," Daniel replied whimsically.
"Everyone likes you. Well, except maybe Ra, Apophis, Osiris, oh and Anubis, but you get the idea," Jack said.
Daniel chuckled. He looked at his best friend, gratitude shining from his eyes. "I wanted to tell you. I really did, but I haven't been Harry Potter for so long, that I no longer think of myself as him. I am Daniel Jackson and I have been for many, many years. If this hadn't happened, if Hermione hadn't butted into my life again and kidnapped me, I never would've said a thing. I would've died as Dr. Daniel Jackson, with no one the wiser," Daniel explained.
"Yeah, well, I think I would've asked, eventually," Jack said.
Daniel's forehead furrowed in confusion. "What do you mean?" he asked.
"Things weren't adding up, Daniel. For starters, why did that woman pick a complete stranger, who looked nothing like her friend, to kidnap? Then there's the fact that unlike most situations with you, no one was trying to hurt you," Jack grinned. "You were having tea for God's sake, when I found you. Tea, not coffee--another red flag. You didn't seem too surprised by the concept of this magic they supposedly have. You also knew your way around that castle just a little too well. You tried to look confused, but I know you, Danny, and I knew you were faking it. And you keep insisting that we call the energy weapons 'wands'. You know darn good and well there are weapons out there that can mimic **magic**," he quoted the words in the air, "but you kept insisting on calling them wands," Jack explained.
Daniel's eyes were wide. "Huh," he said, at a loss for words. Every now and then, he forgot how good Jack was at observing. This had been a bad time to forget.
Jack grinned. "Oh, I'm not done yet. There's also the fact that you were upset that we might've hurt the panther. I know you're not an animal person, Daniel, so you were just a little overboard about its safety. Then there's Deadboy here," he jerked a thumb at Snape. "You **never** turn down the opportunity to learn about somebody else's culture, even when you already know about it--but suddenly, you **don't** want to talk to somebody new? Somebody unmistakably strange?" Jack asked, looking Snape up and down sarcastically. "And when we went to help Gandalf, you ducked out of the way of several shots you couldn't have noticed unless you knew what the words they were yelling meant. You've been really jumpy since we rescued you, as if you're waiting for the other shoe to drop. Put all the pieces together, and anybody who really **knows** you is going to pick up on the fact that you're hiding something," Jack ended with a flourish.
"Wow, Jack, that's just"¦wow!" Daniel said, impressed.
Jack gave him a sardonic smile. "You have to remember, there **is** a reason they made me a General, you know."
Daniel snickered. He knew that his friend only pretended to be dumb, but Jack played the idiot to the hilt sometimes, and it was easy to forget just how intelligent he really was.
"Now, maybe you can explain what's going on, hmm? I'd kinda would like to know who the good guys are and who the bad guys are. Why don't we start with our prisoner?" Jack asked.
Daniel jerked his head towards Snape. He had forgotten about his former Potions teacher for a moment. He saw that the professor had been watching them intently. He swallowed his anger at Snape, knowing that the man had tricked him into revealing himself. It had been years, but mentioning Sirius still got a reaction from him, especially when it was Snape.
"Professor," Daniel greeted coldly.
"Potter," Snape bit out.
"This is Professor Severus Snape," Daniel told Jack. "He was my Potions Professor for the seven years I went to Hogwarts. He also trained me and taught me how to fight. He, along with several others, prepared me to defeat Voldemort. He's a - friend," Daniel winced slightly, "of sorts, or he was five years ago."
"Is he a good guy? Because you know, that little comment about torture and burning my insides doesn't really give me a lot of confidence," Jack pointed out sarcastically.
Daniel snickered. "No, he's one of the good guys. Well, let's just say, he's not an enemy. That was just Snape being Snape. He's not known for being nice."
"Yes, I can see that," Jack replied. "Should we let him out?" he asked skeptically.
Daniel nodded. "Yeah, we can let him out. He would have to give a Wizard's Oath not to reveal anything he sees here. I have his wand, so it's not like he's going anywhere," Daniel explained.
Jack rolled his eyes. "Why are you still calling it a wand? You know as well as I do that its technology," Jack mocked.
"Actually, Jack, it really is a wand. If I were to have Thor scan his wand, you would find that is nothing more than a piece of wood, probably birch. The core of the wand will probably be some sort of animal material. It's not technology. It's definitely magic," Daniel explained.
"Right, and the shields aren't technology either?" Jack asked.
"The wards around Hogwarts are constructed with magic. Whether there is something else there as well, I don't know, but they **are** magic," Daniel replied.
"Do you know how farfetched this sounds?" Jack asked.
"Any more far fetched than aliens?" Daniel inquired.
Jack scowled. "So, it's not Ancient technology then? It has nothing to do with the Ancients?" he asked.
Daniel shook his head. "It's not Ancient technology, but I never it said it had nothing to do with the Ancients. There are myths in the Wizarding World that Merlin was the forefather of magic. That before him, there was no magic. Those myths are discounted by some as Merlin just being a powerful wizard, but if you take into account what we know about Merlin, then you get something entirely different," Daniel explained.
"The ATA gene? Wizards are the descendents of the Ancients," Jack speculated with some awe.
Daniel nodded. "I think so. When they left Atlantis and came here, some of them settled here and had children, who had children, etc. Some of them ascended and some didn't. Generations later, Merlin arrives and sees that potential of the ATA gene. He gives the Wizards the control they needed to use their powers, but something happens. The gene is mutated somehow. They aren't as strong and they find ways to compensate. They make spells for things that would be easy for an Ancient -- levitation, healing, even some control of the elements," Daniel explained.
"So, this Wizarding World really is witches and wizards? And magic is really based on that ATA gene?" Jack asked with narrowed eyes.
"Yeah, I believe so," Daniel replied. "And there is one way to test that theory. Do you have Snape's wand?" he asked.
"Yeah," Jack answered slowly.
"Pull it out," Daniel demanded.
Jack looked at him warily and Daniel rolled his eyes. "I'm not going to touch it, Jack."
The General nodded and pulled the wand out of the pocket of his BDUs. He looked at Daniel expectantly and the younger man grinned. "Now, I want you to hold it out and say Lumos."
"Er"¦what?" Jack asked, confused.
"Lumos. Say it, Jack."
Jack cleared his throat and said, "Lumos." Nothing happened and he gave Daniel an arched look. "Looks like that theory was shot to hell," he said smugly.
Daniel shook his head, exasperated. "You weren't holding the wand right. Hold it out in front of you, grip it like so," he demonstrated on an imaginary wand, "and then say Lumos firmly. Part of doing magic isn't just saying the word, that's only a focus. You need to believe that it'll work. Lumos makes the tip of the wand glow. Make the wand glow, Jack," he said.
"Potter, he's a muggle. There is no way that he can make the wand work, plus the fact that **my** wand may not be right for him," Snape commented harshly. "You can't explain magic with Muggle science."
"I'm not trying to explain magic by Muggle science, only by genetics," Daniel said. At Snape's confused look, he explained. "Bloodlines, you know that thing that divides the Muggles from the Wizarding World." He raised his eyebrows sarcastically.
Snape frowned. "You are wasting your time. He's a Muggle, there's no way he can do it."
Jack's jaw clenched and he pointed the wand. "Lumos." He watched in amazement as the wand began to glow with a bright white light.
"Yes! I was right!" Daniel said excitedly. "Magic is based on the ATA gene."
"You can't know that, Potter," Snape snapped.
"I can, because it's a fact that Jack has the ATA gene, the blood of a Wizard, a descendent of an Ancient. Jack can do magic."
"Oh boy," Jack muttered, still stunned as he regarded the glowing wand.
