  • Chapter Ten: Sunset Sonnets and Saltwater Sweets

DISCLAIMER: You know Harry Potter and his friends and teachers and the whole world that he exists in? Yeah, they aren't ours, and more's the pity. They belong to the utterly brilliant mind of J.K. Rowling-the lucky gal! We will return everybody and everything in a mostly recognizable state when we're done playing! We promise!

Cass here! If you don't know by now that Cass is Renee (me!!!) and Lex is Sarah; you haven't been paying much attention have you?

By the way, a quick shout out to my dear Kagai_neko; love ya and can't wait to see you again chicadee! Thanks for the reviews! Gods I love ya!

    *b4b*b4b*b4b*b4b*b4b*

    ***Monday***

“So, we made it through our first day of classes here at Hogwarts,” Sarah sighed as she and Renee reclined against the tree near the lake.

“Yup,” Renee sighed, setting aside her book to stare at the blazing sunset.

“Did you like Charms Class?” Sarah asked.

“Yeah. Professor Flitwick is so small!” Renee replied with a grin.

“He’s so old! But he’s so adorable! I wonder if he’d ever wear an elf suit during Christmas time,” Sarah pondered thoughtfully.

“Jingling down the hallway in bright green,” Renee laughed. “What did you think of the History of Magic teacher?”

Sarah shuddered. “The ghost Binns or whatever? Too weird! And he’s uber boring!”

“Tell me about it,” Renee yawned. “I think I played more games of tic-tac-toe in his class then I have ever before in my life! He just drones on and on and on and on!” Renee sighed.

“But Care of Magical Creatures is cool!” Sarah smiled, glancing back at Renee.

“Hagrid is cool, the creatures he brings rock socks,” Renee said, catching the small stone Sarah tossed to her. Setting her book down, she rose to skip stones with Sarah.

“Yeah! I didn’t even know what a Blast End what-ever-the-hell is, but they sure were freaky,” Sarah shuddered.

“Skrewts or something like that. Anyway, Hagrid said something about learning about gremlins next class. Everyone’s reviewing for finals already and it’s only a day into the term!” Renee said, counting the skips her stone made across the water.

“I know! It’s not even October yet and here Hermione was organizing study groups for sixth and seventh years for their exams,” Sarah said, jumping in joy when her stone skipped seven more times than Renee’s.

“Good toss, Lex. I know. Hey, your birthday is in a month, Miss Libra. What do you want for your birthday?” Renee asked, chucking another stone.

“I thought you already got my gift,” Sarah inquired.

“Gifts and I did. But Harry, Ron, Hermione and Ginny all want to know what to get you,” Renee smiled as Sarah launched another far past hers. “How do you do that?”

“Dunno. I just do. And they don’t have to get me anything. Something wizardy might be cool. I want to know more about their culture. I mean, we’re American and there’s difference there so there’s bound to be even more of a difference between Muggle American and magical Europe,” Sarah reasoned.

“Makes sense. I’ll let them know,” Renee said, giving up and walking back to the tree. Flopping down, she picked up her book again and fell silent.

“Whatcha reading?” Sarah asked as she sat down next to her.

“Past journal entries,” Renee said. “It’s official, I’m a weirdo.”

“Well, I thought we knew that,” a male voice said from behind them, causing both women to turn.

"Seamus? What are you doing here?" Renee asked, picking up several stones and turning towards the lake again.

"I happen to go to school here," he grinned, laughing when Renee only rolled her eyes and said 'duh'. "And I have something for you."

"For me?" Renee looked confused for a moment.

"No, the other crazy American Gryffindor girl from Chicago," Seamus said, holding a red-foil wrapped bag to her.

"But I'm the only one from Chicago," Renee said, playing the idiot for a moment, grinning when Sarah scowled. "All right, all right, you mean me. What is this?" she asked taking the small package from him.

"Something for you to open and see," Sarah said with a smirk.

"Thank you Captain Obvious," Renee grinned pulling the ribbon to undo the bow, peering into the small bag. "Saltwater taffy!" she exclaimed, leaping to hug Seamus and giving him a firm kiss on each cheek. "You are the most awesome boy ever!"

Seamus grinned and flushed slightly, shoving his hands in his pockets and leaning against the tree, sliding down against it to sit and lean some more. "Any time," he said with a shrug. Renee popped one of the small candies into her mouth, dancing around in joy as she enjoyed it. She sat down beside him and stuffed the bag of taffy into her bookbag.

“You know, Hogwarts isn’t that bad,” Renee said after a moment, again staring out across the lake.

“I know. However, I heard through the grapevine you two managed to get detention this evening,” Seamus smiled, looking back and forth between the two of them.

"It wasn't my fault," Sarah frowned. "It was all the Wombat, at least on my part."

“I plead the Fifth,” Renee grumbled, holding her book up higher and scooting away slightly. "And you have class with us. What kind of 'grapevine' is that?"

Seamus shrugged and they fell into silence, Renee looking more at the horizon than the book in her hands as Sarah repacked her bag and set it to the side, her studying done for the evening. “You know, if this were morning, I would know the perfect sonnet for this,” Renee said as the sun was more than halfway gone on the horizon.

“I wonder what time it is,” Sarah sighed, smirking as Seamus scooted closer to Renee and she leaned against him slightly, oblivious to the happy grin on his face.

"I'm not sure," Seamus said, leaning against the tree as Renee rested against him, beaming over at Sarah, who rolled her eyes at her friend's cluelessness.

"It could be time to talk about that History of Magic essay due in two days," Renee said, pulling her book from her bag and barely noticing when Seamus pulled her back against him.

"I've already gotten it half done," Sarah said.

"Lucky bitch," Renee snapped, tossing the book atop her bag. "I've only got a rough draft."

"Oh, speaking of bitches, Pansy Parkinson is looking for you," Seamus said as he put one arm over Renee's shoulder and looking meaningfully at Sarah. She resisted the urge to laugh aloud as Renee got more comfortable and read, taking notes on another page balanced on the book.

    "What does she want?" Sarah.

"Don't know," Seamus said, grinning up at Sarah as Renee leaned against him in an effort to get comfortable, closing his eyes as he was most comfortable with his current status of leaning post.

“That’s it, I’m leaving. See you later Renee, bye Seamus. I’m going to find the Wombat and bug the hell out of him,” Sarah said, waving goodbye as she headed back toward the castle.

"Did I do something?" Renee asked as Sarah hurried off.

"Not that I know of," Seamus said. "Did we maybe scare her off?"

"Nah, I think Lex just loves bugging the Wombat," Renee said without looking up from her notes. "I wonder how long it will take her to figure out he likes her."

"I wonder," Seamus said with an unseen grin.

"Yeah, Wombat has it bad for her, not that she notices," Renee said, turning the page in the book and continuing with her studies.

"Wombat being Malfoy?" Seamus asked her, shifting slightly to rub the back of her neck with one hand.

"Got it in one, hon," she smiled, nearly drifting off to sleep at the gentle massage.

Seamus and Renee sat in silence for several minutes just staring at the sunset, the note-taking endeavour forgotten. “Hey, what about that sonnet?” he asked, looking down to her.

“If you want me to recite it I will,” Renee shrugged, looking up at him.

“I wouldn’t have asked otherwise,” he smiled, taking the book from her lap and tossing it gently aside.

“Full many a glorious morning have I seen

Flatter the mountain-tops with sovereign eye,

Kissing with golden face the meadows green,

    Gilding pale streams with heavenly alchemy;

Anon permit the basest clouds to ride

With ugly rack on his celestial face,

And from the forlorn world his visage hide,

Stealing unseen to west with this disgrace:

Even so my sun one early morn did shine,

    With all-triumphant splendour on my brow;

But, out! Alack! He was but one hour mine,

The region cloud hath mask’d him from me now.

    Yet him for this my love no whit disdaineth;

Suns of the world may stain when heaven’s sun staineth.
    ”

Renee sighed and stretched after a moment, yawning and snuggling against him with her eyes closed. “William Shakespeare’s Thirty Third Sonnet.”

“It’s pretty,” Seamus said, his arm about her waist and the other holding her hand on his knee.

“Yup,” Renee sighed, moving away from the tree to lay down on the grass, her head on Seamus' thighs.

“So are you,” he said offhandedly, running a hand over her cheek.

Renee snorted in laughter and rolled her eyes, sitting up and glaring at him; standing abruptly.

"Don't leave," Seamus said, pulling her down onto the grass.

"Don't be an ass, Seamus," Renee scowled. "I'm not pretty," she said firmly, trying to stand again. "It's not nice to joke like that."

"Who was joking?" he snapped, pulling her down beside him again. “Stay down here, damnit, before you end up with a bruised ass,” he said, yanking her down again.

“Too late for that,” Renee sighed, rubbing her now-sore bottom and lying back on the grass.

“And that wasn’t a lie. It was a statement,” he protested, lying down next to her.

“It was an opinion, an incorrect one at that,” Renee countered with a pout.

“I happen to think you’re pretty, thank you,” Seamus said, looking over at her again.

“I happen to think you need to get your eyes checked, thank you,” she replied with a scowl.

“You were so nice a moment ago, what’s wrong?” he asked her as she sat up again, but made no move to stand.

"You annoy me," she said as she rested her chin on her knees.

Seamus blinked and looked over at her. "Is that all?" he laughed. At her glare, he only laughed harder. "I've been trying to get your attention for the entire day," Seamus said.

"Why?" Renee looked confused. Seamus sighed heavily and shook his head.

"You're clueless," he sighed, smiling again when she tilted her head to one side to consider him.

"I am not!" she objected, going to rise again and seeing Sarah and Draco heading towards them. "Hey guys!" she waved.

"Detention time, Tigris," Draco said, attempting to maintain an arisotratic air even as Sarah tugged him by the sleeve across the grass quickly.

"And what if I don't want to go?" Renee frowned.

"You won't actually skip a detention with Professor Snape, will you?" Seamus asked, rising to his feet to stand beside Renee.

"No, I don't want to loose anymore House Points on the first day of school," Renee smiled, looking around for her various school supplies currently strewn around in the grass.

"Don't take all day, Cass," Sarah warned, only to be waved away.

"Yeah, yeah, I'll not be late," Renee said, bending to pick up her books; not noticing Seamus' attention on her as she rose and turned around, suddenly face-to-face with the Irish boy.

"I don't think that Gryffindor will have many points this year," Draco said, smirking as Renee fumbled the books and blushed as Seamus stepped even closer.

“Let’s go, Wombat if she wants to be late she can be,” Sarah stated casually, tugging the collar of Draco’s robes. He scowled and attempted to free himself with a jerk of his shoulders.

“Woman! Would you quit that?” Draco demanded as she nearly toppled him over with the force of her pulling.

“Never,” she said fixing an evil grin that made him pale slightly.

“Bloody hell, “ he moaned. “I blame you for this, Tigris!” he scowled.

Seamus and Renee shared an amused glance as the odd duo walked off, still bickering loudly. “Are they always that interesting?” Seamus inquired. Renee nodded silently and picked up the contents of her pencilbag, stuffing several quills into it as well as a spelled-shut inkwell.

“How do you think we got here in the first place?” Renee said, watching as Sarah and Draco disappeared into the castle. Seamus arched a brow as if signaling for the oncoming explanation.

“Go on,” Seamus coaxed gently when Renee remained silent, staring across the water vacantly. "Are you going to explain or what?"

"Maybe another time," Renee said snapping from her trance like state to look for her notes, currently at the water's edge held down by one of her shoes.

"Is this your other shoe?" Seamus asked, pulling the other shoe from the hollow in the tree and dusting the leaves from it.

“Yup. Thanks," she said, pulling both shoes on one after the other and looking for her watch, currently nowhere to be found. "Do you know what time it is by chance?” Renee asked him, cramming the rest of her stuff into her bag and let it drop to the ground, plopping next to it determined to relax for the few minutes she had until detention.

“Five to seven. What time is your detention?” Seamus asked.

“Fuck and double fuck. Five minutes from now,” Renee said as she sprang to her feet and grabbed her book bag.

“Here,” Seamus said, handing her the books she had left on the ground.

“Thanks, Seamus. I’ll see you around?” Renee asked as he stood and dusted himself off.

“Of course. You know where I am staying, so it won't be too hard to find me. We do share classes,” he smiled as she checked her pockets to make sure she had everything. “You’re going to be late,” he smiled.

“No I’m not. I’m going to haul ass,” Renee smiled before giving him her customary peck on the cheek that she gave to all her close friends.

Seamus blinked in surprise before stopping her. “Wait!” he protested, grabbing her wrist as she walked past the tree.

She paused and looked at him confusion etched over her features. “You know…Maybe I am going to be late at this rate, Seamus,” she stated, pulling her arm closer to her in an attempt to get him to release her but only succeeded in bringing him closer.

He flashed a mischievous smile as he grabbed her shoulders a breath before pressing his lips firmly to hers. “Now you can go, Renee. It wouldn’t do to be late.” He grinned again turning to leave an open-mouthed Renee wondering what in the fuck had occurred.

“Detention, right,” she stammered as she sped off, stumbling into the castle as quickly as possible.

    Cass here!

This was a fun chapter! Okay, sort of. All right, some parts were damned funny. Lex!!!! Nevermind. Love ya!
