"Malfoy! What're you doing?"
"I'm taking you to our compartment. Didn't I tell you that you're going to ride back with me?"
Hermione pulled her arm from his grasp. "There's no way I'm going to share such a small space with you for the next few hours. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go find Harry and Ron. I'll meet you in the front when he arrive."
Draco watched Hermione leave with a scowl on his face.
Stupid Mudblood! Who does she think she is? Draco thought angrily as he turned and marched back to his compartment at the head of the train.
Honestly! She was more trouble than she was worth. The next few months were going to be hell for him, but once the baby was born he'd make sure he'd never have to see her again. He'd have three months to convince her to leave the child in his care, and he knew that it wasn't going to be an easy task. If Granger was anything, she was stubborn. She was a fighter who in the end, always got her way...
...But so did he.
-------------------------------------------------
The train ride back had gone far too fast for Hermione's liking. She stared out of her compartment window and watched as students were greeted by their parents and siblings and gathered their belongings to leave for their home.
Hermione wasn't going home. She was going to hell.
"You sure you want to do this, Hermione?"
"It's the only option I have," she said as she tore her gaze from the window to look up into Harry's concerned eyes. "Don't worry. I won't let him boss me around."
Harry laughed. "I have no doubt about that." His tone became serious. "Just, be careful, alright? You still have your necklace on?" Hermione's hand wrapped around the small blue jewel around her neck. Harry had given it to her as a way to reach him or Ron if ever she needed them. All she had to do was was hold it between her hands and call out their names, and they would instantly be at her side.
"I do."
"Never take that off, alright?"
"I won't Harry, I promise."
Harry smiled as he wrapped is arms around her shoulders and brought her in for a hug. He was her dearest friend and always seemed to be there for her no matter what.
"I love you Harry."
"I love you too. Be safe, alright? Ron and I will visit you next weekend, whether ferret likes it or not."
Hermione smiled sadly. "Alright."
Harry walked her to the front of the train where Malfoy was leaning against it's side. As he watched them approach his eyes flashed down to their intertwined hands.
"Malfoy." Harry growled in greeting.
"Potter." Draco smirked back.
Harry dropped Hermione's hand and pointed a finger into Draco's face. "If you lie a hand on her, I swear I'll rip you to pieces."
Draco laughed as you motioned toward Hermione's stomach. "I've already lied a hand on her, Potter. Or has she kept that a secret from you too?" Harry stepped forward with his fist raised as Hermione stepped between them.
...And luckily her large tummy kept them far apart.
"Harry," she said softly. "I'll owl you tonight, ok?"
Harry frowned, not taking his eyes away from Malfoy's. "Alright, love. Owl me as soon as you get in."
"I will." A tear fell down Hermione's cheek as she hugged Harry tightly against her. "Goodbye." If the two weren't so caught up on the moment, they would have noticed an awfully strange emotion flash across Draco's face.
"Enough. We have to go now, Granger."
Hermione let go of Harry as she turned and followed Draco off of the platform. She silently followed behind him as he led her into the parking lot in front of the station and over to a long stretch limo where a man in a suit was waiting with the door held open for them.
Hermione raised an eyebrow. "A limo?"
"Good eye Granger." Draco said sarcastically as he slid in beside her.
"Isn't this a bit...muggle for your tastes?"
Draco sighed in annoyance. "Have you done any research at all? You shouldn't ever travel with magic while pregnant. Especially not in your later months."
"Why not?"
"Because it has been known to recognize a baby in a woman's womb as a separate person. The mother could find herself in one place, while the unborn fetus may be sent to another."
Hermione cringed as she massaged her stomach and looked out her window. They sat quietly beside each other for nearly an hour and Hermione watched the city turn into forest as the driver took them farther and farther up a twisted mountain.
"How much farther, Malfoy?"
"Should only be another five minutes or so." Hermione was surprised to find no bitterness in his voice. "Just over that hill over there," he said, pointing to a large black lump in the distance.
"Hm." she said quietly. "So, whatever happened to Pansy? Is she still going to want to marry you after she finds out you've already got a child?" Hermione grinned. She watched as Malfoy's shoulder's tensed.
"Not that it's any of your business, but i've broken things off with her."
Hermione's mouth fell open. "Broke things off...?"
"Yes."
"But, why?"
"Because the only thing that I needed her for was an heir, and now that I have one, she's of no use to me."
Hermione narrowed her eyes. He really was as cold hearted as she had always believed him to be. Sure, she couldn't care less about Pansy, but it was still terrible to hear him say such things.
"Well, what about your parents? Don't you think that they're going to mind havinga "dirty mudblood" in their home?"
"They're dead."
Hermione fell silent as she carefully searched over his features. He wasn't lying. But he didn't seem to be effected at all by his parent's death...Odd...
"We're here."
Hermione turned her head to look out of the window as they drove up to one of the most beautiful homes Hermione had ever seen. It was huge! It had white marble walls and a dark slanted roof. There was a fountain in the front, portraying a picture of a man and woman intertwined in a romanic embrace. The ground was made with a soft stone, Hermione noticed as the driver helped her out of the limo and she turned to walk towards the trunk of the car. As she was reaching in to grab her trunk Draco stepped beside her and grabbed her wrist.
"What do you think you're doing?" he asked as he raised an eyebrow.
Hermione sighed. "I'm getting my trunk, Malfoy. I would have thought that was obvious."
Draco chuckled. "You don't need to do that here. Unlike back at your muggle home, we have people to do that for us."
Hermione rolled her eyes and stepped away from the limo, "Whatever Malfoy." He simply smirked and turned to walk toward the Manner and after a few moments, Hermione turned to follow him.
The large double doors opened for Malfoy as he neared them and Hermione could hear the clicking of his expensive shoes against the marble flooring before she had even stepped inside. She stopped at the thresh hold and Draco turned to her.
"What? Are you sleeping outside tonight?" Hermione looked up from the floor and into his deep grey eyes...
This is it. No turning back now. She thought as she held her breath and took her first step inside.
Draco shook his head and turned to continue walking. Hermione's eyes traveled over the many portraits that adorned the walls, of all which were looking down at her. Some of them looked curious, while others looked angry.
"Hurry up, will you?" Draco yelled from the other side of the hall. Hermione turned and waddled onward. The long day of traveling had begun to take its toll on her body and she found it more difficult to stay upright with every step that she took.
"Slow down, will ya?!" Hermione yelled at Draco's back.
"What's the matter, Granger? Can't keep up with me?" He grinned as he turned his head to look at her. Hermione frowned.
"More like I'm pregnant, you halfwit," she growled. Draco said nothing, but he did slow his pace a little. "Thank you," she sighed.
He led her through many twisted and dark hallways until he reached a large door with a serpent on the front of it. Draco turned to her. "This is the library. I know how you love these places, Granger. So I felt I might as well show you were it is. You may enter whenever you wish." Hermione said nothing.
Wow...Where did that come from?
He stopped suddenly, not 10 feet from the library. "This is your room," he said as he opened a door. Hermione stepped inside and was surprised to see that it was really, very nice. Nothing like the damp dungeon she suspected he'd give her to stay in. There was a four poster bed in the far corner of the room, and a large wooden desk beside it. Above the desk was a window that at this hour, showed nothing but darkness outside.
"That window looks out over the garden," he said quietly. "This was my mother's private room..." Hermione turned to stare at him with wide eyes. He was looking down and a strange emotion flashed over his features, before returning to his normal cold mask. "My servant, Arthur, will bring your bags up shortly. I'll see you tomorrow at breakfast," he said before he turned and left the room.
Hermione walked over to the bed and sat down with a sigh. After kicking off her shoes and pulling her feet up beside her, she let out a loud yawn and settled down on the comfortable mattress. Not 5 minutes later there was a knock at the door...
"What do you want, Malfoy?" she asked as the door slid open and a young man peeked his head in.
"I apologize, miss. But I was told to bring your bags up here...?" he asked in a quiet voice.
"Oh!" Hermione pushed herself up into a sitting position. "I'm sorry, I thought you were Malfoy. You're Arthur, right?" The man smiled as he pushed the door open and drug Hermione's trunk behind him.
"Yes, ma'am." He bowed low to the ground. "Arthur Willshop at your service. And you are Pansy Parkinson, correct?" Hermione began to choke. "Are you alright, Miss!?" Arthur said as he ran to her side.
Hermione quickly composed herself. "Ahem...yes. Yes, I'm alright. But I'm not Pansy. My name is Hermione Granger."
Arthur smiled. "I didn't think you were that girl. I heard that she smells odd, and her face resembles that of a dog. And If you don't mind me saying miss, you are quite lovely and you smell of the green rolling hills near my old home in Scotland. "
Hermione blushed at the young man. She could tell he was quite handsome, from the small glances she was able to steal when he wasn't looking. He looked only to be a few years older than she. He had dirty blond hair pulled back into a low pony tail on his back and his eyes were full of laughter and kindness, much like Harry's.
"Well, thank you Arthur..."
Gurgle Gurgle...
Hermione clapped her arms around her middle and Arthur's eyes widened as he looked down at her. "Pardon me for asking Miss-"
"-Hermione."
He smiled. "Pardon me for asking Hermione. But would you like to come down to the kitchens and let me look you something to eat? I make a fair tuna sandwich."
Hermione laughed. "You read my mind."
"No..." Arthur rubbed his chin and his smile grew larger. "Actually I just heard your stomach."
One hour and three tuna sandwiches later Hermione sat at a large oak table with Arthur beside her. They were laughing loudly and making jokes and Hermione suddenly found herself forgetting that she was living in her worst enemy's home, but rather spending time with an new friend.
"So how did you end up here in the first place? You don't seem to be the kind of person who'd work under an asshole like Malfoy." Hermione asked as she plopped her chin down in the palm of her hand.
Arthur shook his head in disagreement. "Master Draco has been very kind to me over the years..." Hermione's mouth fell open in shock. Arthur laughed as he put a finger under her chin and closed it slowly. "I'm telling you the truth! A long time ago my great great Grandfather indebted himself to Master Draco's great great Grandfather. Ever since then my family has lived under their rule and have pledge our lives to serving them."
Hermione frowned. "That isn't right, Arthur. You're basically a slave!"
Arthur looked slightly offended. "That is not true. The Malfoy's have done nothing but protect and watch over my family. They provide us with a home and a life. Master Draco had even tried to make me go to school to become a wizard, but I had refused."
Hermione's eyes widened. "But why?"
"He said that I would have had to go to a school in Scotland, so I said that I would stay at the manner. I would have agreed if I was able to go to Hogwarts, so that I could serve him while he was away from home. But he refused. He said that Hogwarts was his real home, and that he didn't want to bring any piece of this place with him while he was there. He didn't want to taint it."
Hermione's mind was racing. The way that Arthur talked about Malfoy almost made him sound...
Human.
"Hermione? Do mind if I ask you something?...."
Hermione looked up into Arthur's green eyes. "Not at all. What is it?"
"...Is that Master Draco's child you are carrying?"
Hermione paled and looked down at her stomach. "Yes."
"Do you love him?"
...........
"Arthur. I wish to speak with you for a moment."
Hermione turned in her chair to see Draco standing in the doorway with his hands in his pockets. He had changed out of his uniform and into a pair of black slacks and a loose fitting white shirt. His hair looked freshly washed as it hung low onto his shoulders. All in all, he looked..beautiful.
And he didn't look happy.
"O-of course Master Draco...." Arthur mumbled as he stood up from his seat and bowed goodbye to Hermione. She watched as Draco turned to let Arthur by with a frown on his face before turning to Hermione. "I'll assume you can find your way back to your room?" Hermione nodded. "Good," he said as he turned and followed Arthur into the darkness.
Quite suddenly, Hermione found herself to be feeling more alone that ever...
