Chapter 10 Long, pink and slimy???
Nina reached the lawns and stopped to take in her surroundings. It was the first time she had not had the opportunity to see the beauty and splendour of this place that she loved so much already. ‘I’ve only been here a few days. It feels like so much longer.’ But so much had happened to Nina in those few days. She felt like a lifetimes worth of adventure had been concentrated, pushed through a funnel and blasted at her all in one go. As she walked she thought about what had happened with the Unicorns. About she thought she was going to be bitten and killed by a vampire when all she had come in search of work and a place to stay. How he had smacked her bum and she had pulled his pants so far up his backside she thought she might have turned him into a eunuch. She remembered the Unicorns. How beautiful they were, how they had made her feel. She thought about the boy with the white/blonde hair that she had bumped into, and how he had offered her his arm and taken her down to the Great Hall. How the Vampire had not seemed too happy about it. There was a lake just in front of her and she sat down at the waters edge, her back against a tree staring out.
She thought about the visit back to Aunt Aggie and Uncle Pete’s. With a shudder she remembered all the things that had been said there. It seemed an age ago, until she recalled that the Headmaster and Professor Snape knew, now, what she was. For most of her life Uncle Pete had drummed it into her that she was a ‘Dirty, Ugly little whore.’ ‘Is that really what I am? Does everyone here know now. Do I look like a dirty whore. Can everyone tell when they look at me. She remembered the man at the station. She was going to let him fuck her, like Uncle Pete did. That was all that she thought she was good for. Then the Professor had come for her. He had made her come back here with him. Why had he done that?
Then she remembered the previous night. Waking up to that agonising pain in her arm The sudden realisation that she was somewhere she shouldn’t be. The Professor. The bald fat man. The monster that she knew now was what they all feared. Then she thought about the things she knew, instinctively, when they were there, in front of that thing they called Dark Lord or something. The image of herself and the professor as they held hands and looked into each others eyes as that creature had sent those curses at them. They had stood, green light all around them. It was meant to kill them. She knew that. But as she held on to her vampire, ‘Her vampire?’ and looked into his eyes she saw many things It was as if at that moment his soul was open to her. Pain, terror, for her not himself, fear, regret, torment, and through it all, shining through all of those emotions, love. She had seen love. She was sure of it. When he had leaned towards her and put his lips to hers so gentle, so pure, so honest, their eyes still connected. That was when she pressed her lips back to his. When he pulled back she was sorry that he had. The green light had gone and it was time to leave this horrendous place. Time to go back to Hogwarts. The first place that she thought of was the Headmasters office.
They had still been holding hands when they arrived, still looking to each other when the old man had crawled round the side of his desk. He seemed to be looking for something. Nina could not remember anything after that until she asked Kali, “Kali, where are we?”
Her eyes had been closed and as she opened to take in the view again while she touched her lips with her fingers where their lips had touched for too brief a time. Her fingers gently brushed across them as she watched the long pink slimy thing sliding up her leg. LONG. PINK. SLIMY. “ARRGGH! Screamed at the top of her voice as she scramble to gat away from it. Slipping. She was slipping. It had her, she was sure it had. “omigodomigdomgod. HELP! HEL ME!. She was panicking and could not gat a foot hold to get up.
Then a hand appeared. “It’s okay you’re safe. It’s just the giant squid. He likes to play.”
Grabbing the hand she let it pull her up. “Giant? Squid? Play?” She was breathless.
The boy chuckled. “Yeah. Don’t worry, he won’t hurt you. He’s gone now.”
Turning she saw that it had disappeared back into the water. “Th…thanks.” Nina panted, still glancing over her shoulder in case it came back.
“Anytime. It won’t come back you know. I think you scared it.”
“I scared it?” She stared into a pair of startlingly green eyes.
“My names Harry, Harry Potter.”
“Hiya Harry.”
“This is Ron, and Hermione.”
Nina looked over to a girl who she guessed to be about her own age, with brown hair and eyes and a warm smile. “Hello. Are you alright. We heard you screaming.. Someone should have warned you about the squid.”
“And I’m Ron, the good looking one.” Harry play punched him.
Hiya Hermione, Ron. I suppose you think I’m a right idiot, carrying on like that.”
No we don’t. Your Jane right?” Harry asked her.
“Err, no. I’m Nina.”
They all looked confused. “Long story.” She told them.
“Fair enough.” Harry told her. “So, are you here for long?”
“I don’t know. A while I suppose, since the Headmaster has given me my own rooms so that I wont have to sleep in the infirmary any more.”
“Wow. You’re not a student then? Are you a teacher? Ron asked her.
“Erm, neither really. I don’t know what I am.”
Hermione narrowed her eyes. “You are a witch though, right?”
“Erm. Bugger, I keep saying that. Look I’m sorry but I don’t know if I’m anything to be honest.” She felt embarrassed.
“”Well, do you have a wand?”
“No.
“There you go then. You can’t be a proper witch or wizard if you don’t have a wand.”
“Ron that is utter rubbish and you know it.” Hermione told him.
“No it’s not. Is it Harry?”
Harry didn’t answer. He just looked towards the girl who had turned and walked away from them, her head down, “Way to go Ron.”
“Me. What did I do?”
Nina knew that there was no point hanging around.
Even at primary school, if you didn’t have the right shoes or the right clothes, the latest toy, or your hair wasn’t cut in the latest style, you didn’t fit in. No one wanted to be you’re friend. And if you wore second hand gear all the time that didn’t fit you. You did not stand a chance. Nina did not have a wand. She was not a witch like the other girls. She was strange and different to them.
Harry came running up behind her. “Hey. Wait up.”
She stopped but kept her head down. Waiting for some biting remark. It didn’t come.
“Look, I’m sorry about Ron. He didn’t mean it. Well he did, but not the way it sounded.”
Nina looked at him. Unsure of how to react.
The other two caught up. “Go on.” Hermione told him.
The red headed boy looked sheepishly at her. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean anything by it you know. I tend to open my mouth and stupid things come out of it. It’s quite a gift really.” He laughed.
Until Hermione added. “Like slugs you mean?”
Now Nina was totally confused and it showed on her face.
Hermione stepped forward. “The fact is that we don’t care what you are. Witch or not. It doesn’t matter to us. Ron here is the only pure blood among the three of us. Harry is half blood and I’m muggle born. Both my parents are dentists. Not a bit of magic amongst them.”
“Look. We‘re going to see our mate Hagrid. You know the big bloke you met at the Unicorn paddock?”
“Oh. Okay. I’ll maybe see you around then.”
“No.” Harry told her. “We wondered if you wanted to come with us. I you’re not doing anything else that is.”
“Yes. No. I mean, yes I would like to come with you and no, I’m not doing anything else.”
Hermione linked her arm into Nina’s, taking her by surprise slightly, and off they went.
“So,” Ron piped up “If you can’t do magic, what can you do?”
The other two groaned.
“I didn’t say that I couldn’t do magic. I said that I don’t have a wand.”
“But you can’t do magic without a wand.” He complained.
“Yes you can. Look at Dumbledor.” Hermione reminded him.
”And Snape.” Harry said. “Is that what you do Nina?”
“I suppose so.”
“Do something wandless then.” Ron asked her.
“What?”
“Oh, I don’t know. Make a tree dance or something.”
“Don’t be silly Ron. Even those who can do wandless magic can only do simple spells.” I read about it.
“I think you might have read the wrong book this time Hermione.”
She was just about to tell Harry that of course she hadn’t read the wrong book when she noticed that he and Ron were staring open mouthed towards the trees at the edge of the Forbidden Forest. She looked at Nina who was smiling in the same direction and then over to the forest.
Two trees, of similar size and about five or six feet apart, were moving. More than moving, they were swaying and bowing to each other. The twisted and twirled, still rooted in the ground as each trees branches reached out to the other as they bowed again and twirled some more. There were a few bushes in front of the trees and as Nina flicked her fingers at them they began to shimmy. The three stared, amazed.
“Miss Manohel.” The deep voice boomed behind them and they all jumped. “The Headmaster would like to see you in his office before dinner.”
The Golden Trio gulped and the tree’s and bushes went on dancing as Nina made to go.
“Perhaps if you were to stop your little display, before the entire inhabitants decide to leave the forest to find out just what is going on.”
“Oh. Yeah, I forgot Sir. Sorry.” She turned to Harry, Ron and Hermione. I have to go . Thanks for talking to me.”
The three just stood and stared as they watched Nina walk off with the Potions Master.
None of them noticed Draco Malfoy. He had been stood well back against the castle, tucked in to one of the many small niches that were set at uneven intervals along walls. He had witnessed the whole thing. He had also seen the way that his Potions Master had looked at Nina before he had approached her. Draco did not know as yet what had transpired at his home the night before. If he had, then he would have gone to speak to her at the lake. He was considering going to her but when she screamed, the bloody Griffindor trio had shown up and got there before him.
They would never have believed what she had just done if they had not seen it with there own eyes. Ron gulped. “Did she really do what I think she did?”
Harry only nodded.
“But It’s not possible.”
“Clearly it is Hermione.”
“But Harry she….she…..”
I Know. And did you see when Snape came. The magic didn’t stop. And she never batted an eyelid at him when he told her off for making the trees dance.
And it wasn‘t only wandless, she used none verbal spells.”
They forgot all about their meeting with Hagrid as they made their way quietly up to Griffindor tower.
As Severus and Nina were making their way to the Headmasters office he told her. “It is not advisable to show off your abilities in such a way. Especially with those three particular students.”
“I don’t understand. Showing off?”
“Yes. Showing off.” He growled. “No one likes a show off.”
“Oh. I didn’t mean to.”
“So it was an accident that you caused the trees to do the Tango?”
“Well no. But they asked me to do some magic. I wanted them to think that I was like them. That I could do magic, even if I don’t have a wand the same as everyone else.”
“And you think that no one will like you if you do not have a wand?”
“Well…Yeah.”
“Nina. You are not like them. You are not like anyone on this earth. You have powers that are beyond all imagination. You do not need to prove yourself to anyone.”
Nina didn’t look at him. ‘What did he know? Of course she had to prove herself. She did not want to be different. She wanted to be like them. She had seen the other students. All of them had someone. They hung around in two’s and three’s, sometimes in larger groups. But they all had ‘someone’.’ She wanted a friend too. She had never had one before. Was it so wrong to want one now?’
“In case you haven’t noticed, I am not exactly overrun with friends. Is it so wrong to want one of my own?”
Severus looked at her. She was back to hanging her head as she walked. It was true, she had not got any friends as yet. There had not really been any opportunity to make any. But Potter and his two lackey’s were not suitable for her in Severus‘ opinion. If he had to spend most of his spare time with her he did not want those three hovering in the background. Besides, Potter was now surplus to requirements.
As they arrived at the Headmasters door it opened.
“Nina, Severus, how nice of you to come. I trust that you are recovered from yesterday evenings ‘events‘?”
Severus raised an eyebrow. ‘As if we could refuse.’ He thought.
“Yes thank you Sir. You wanted to see me?”
“That was a most impressive display you put on for out young Mr Potter and his friends.”
Nina did not see the slight smile on Albus‘ face.
“ Ah. Yeah. I’m really sorry. Professor Snape told me I shouldn’t have done it. I wont do it again. Promise. I didn’t know I wasn’t supposed to. They know I’m not a proper witch and I thought that if I did something err ‘witchy’ that they might like me.”
“And did Severus also tell you that you that you do not need to prove yourself?”
“Yes Sir.” She studied the toes of her trainers as she scuffed her toes together.
“Nina, you are a witch.”
She looked at him wide eyed. “But you are also something more. This weekend you shall have a chance to make friends. You shall accompany Professor Snape and myself to a secret location known only by a select group of people. I would ask that you take an Oath not to reveal the whereabouts of this place and to not speak to anyone of what you learn.”
Nina was unsure about this. Secret places were not good. Bad things happened in secret places.
“I don’t think I want to go.”
Severus had an inkling when her saw her expression. He reached across to her and gently placed his hand on her head, just as he had that day at Fall’s farm. He saw her Uncle dragging her into a building, telling her to ‘keep her mouth shut and stop snivelling.’ He guessed her to be about ten years old at the time.
“Now this place is secret right.” Her Uncle Pete told her. Secret. You tell anyone about it an I’ll give you a right bloody ‘iding.”
Once inside Severus could see seven or eight other men present. They were lounging about, drinking beer and spirits.
As Pete dragged her in they all leered at her. One of the men spoke up. “At last. We thought you were never gonna get ‘ere wi the fluff.
“I said I’d come an I ‘ave.” He gruffed. ‘Ere.” He pushed
her towards a group of men who, Severus now noticed, were standing near a mattress on the floor. They grabbed her immediately and began to touch her.
Severus pulled his hand back sharply. He had to take a couple of breaths before he could speak. When he did he spoke gently.
“Miss M….Nina, please sit down.”
As she sat and he took the seat beside her he took her hand. “Nina . It is not the same. Where we shall be going. It is a safe place. There will be others there near to your age. They are good people. It will not be….it will not be the same as with your Uncle.”
She studied him. As he held on to her and looked directly into her eyes, she could see his honesty. But she could not help but be afraid.
“I will make you an Oath.” Severus told her. I promise that while you are there, you shall come to no harm. No one will attempt to do …to do what those other men did. This I vow.”
As he finished speaking they could all feel the surge of magic as the Oath took hold.
Nina nodded her head. “Alright.” She said quietly.
“Wonderful.” Albus added. “Now, shall we go to dinner?”
They entered the Great hall. Most of the students had already arrived and as Nina tagged along a little way behind the Head master and the Potions Professor.
Harry spotted her. As she drew level he called to her.
Hey! Nina. You want to come sit with us?”
Nina stopped.
Ron said. “Yeah. C’mon. There’s plenty of room.”
She looked at Hermione. She was smiling and nodding her head to her.
“I’ll go ask. Just give me a minute.”
She ran up to the head table smiling Albus and Severus were already seated by now and so she went to the front of the table and looked up to the Potions Master.
“Sir. Please may I go and sit at that table?” She pointed to the Griffindor table. “They’ve asked me and I said I’d ask. They‘ve even saved me a seat.” She said excitedly.”
“You already have a seat here Miss Manohel.” He told her. His face was stern. He did not want her to sit with them. He wanted her here, next to him.
“Oh! Okay.” She was disappointed.
As she began to make her way round to her seat, Albus spoke.
“Severus. Do you not think that was a bit cruel?”
“Cruel Headmaster? It was not my intention to be cruel. You are as aware as I am what happened today. She will have ample opportunity to meet them this weekend.”
“Oh come on Severus.” Minerva put in. “She only wants a chance to talk to someone closer to her own age.”
Severus looked at Nina when she sat down. She had not questioned his decision. Merely obeyed him and was now taking her seat. Maybe Minerva was right. He looked over at the Griffindor table. They were scowling at him. He scowled back and they looked away. When he looked back at Nina he could see that she was terribly disappointed and he did not want to be the cause of that disappointment.
“Miss Manohel? Would it remove that sour look from your face if you were to be allowed to sit with your friends?”
Nina looked at him. Puzzled for a moment.
“I don’t look miserable. Do I? I’m Sorry I…“
He leaned towards her. “Just go.” She looked at him stunned. “Now. Before I change my mind.”
Her face lit up as if he had given her the moon.
“Really? Thank you. Thank you.”
She was beaming at him and before he knew what was happening she had got up and flung her arms around him, giving him a big smacking kiss an the cheek. And she had done it in front of the whole school.
As Nina ran off the Potions Master went several shades of red, pink and purple. He tried his best to scowl and glare at everyone but it just did not have the same effect as it normally would.
Albus, Minerva and a few of the other staff were chuckling.
He glowered at Albus.
“It would appear that you have just made the young lady extremely happy Severus.”
“Oh shut up you old fool.”
As Nina sat down between Hermione and a red haired girl who were both grinning at her, Ron Said.
“Blimey Nina. You’ve got some bloody nerve, I’ll give you that.”
“What?” Nina didn’t know what he was talking about.
“You mean you don’t know? I‘m Ginny by the way, Ron‘s sister”
Nina looked to the girl sitting next to her. She was also grinning.
“Hi Ginny. What should I know?
Nina noticed then that the whole table was either grinning or looking at with awe.
“Oh oh. What have I done wrong now?”
Hermione put her hand on to Nina’s.
“You haven’t done anything wrong. It’s just that none of us are used to seeing someone plant a smacking great kiss on Professor Snape.” Her lips were twitching as she spoke.
“Yeah.” Added Harry who, like Ron was holding his sides. “Its not as if their queuing up to kiss the Greasy Bat of the Dungeons.”
He, Ron and many others were now splitting their sides laughing, along with most of the students in the hall.
Nina was confused, upset and frightened now. She had obviously done something very bad.
She looked up at the Potions Master. His face was livid. And she was the cause. Oh, she was in big bother now. Without saying a word, she got out of her seat and ran from the hall.
