Yeah, reviews. I love ‘em. And XC, never too many.
Chapter 10
“So why am I here? I don’t see what I have to do with any of what you told me. The fact that I’m a… yuck, Leech, well it just doesn’t add up does it. Like you said, I’m not a proper witch, I can’t use a wand and cast spells and stuff and it‘s clear I‘m not going to be welcomed by… your kind. And you know, it kind of gives me the willies that you’ve been watching me all those years,” She pointed her gaze at Severus. “then waited until the worst possible moment to bring me here. Why?”
“I would say it was an ideal moment to implement your rescue, considering you were about to be recaptured.”
“That’s not what I meant and you know it. Why not get me before… before… well if I never met David, I wouldn’t have had to lose him, see my babies cruelly… Why?”
Albus explained patiently. “As Severus has already mentioned, a time turner cannot return one that is already destined to die, nor can it prevent the beginning of a new life. In fact, we have committed a gross act of misconduct by bringing you forward in time as it is. Your ‘other self‘, the ‘you’ that would have been had we not intervened, lived a life of solitude. Partly through choice, you never accepted the loss of your family, and partly because any hand of friendship you offered was eventually shunned by others who found themselves inexplicably fatigued in your presence, even after something as simple as a handshake. That ‘you’ no longer exists.”
Kathy didn’t know what to say, it was true that even in her childhood years, other kids soon decided she was not good company. They complained that she was odd, that she took something from them, even if they didn’t know what that something was. She never got hugs from the staff when she was hurt or upset like the other kids, if she fell and skinned her knee, they would tell her to clean herself up. Only Tomtom ever accepted her for what she was, and later David and her own children.
“So now what? And why wasn’t David affected, and my babies too? Were they Lee… like me?”
“No they were not. We believe that the strength of your emotion towards your husband is what prevented you from taking from him, as for you little ones, they shared a bond with you, a mothers bond, as well as your blood. That is what protected them.” Albus told her.
“Well you touched me; you carried me, so how come you weren’t affected? And my friend Tomtom?” She aimed her question at Severus.
“You will not have noticed, but I was careful to always wear thick leather gloves when in your presence. As for your childhood friend, can you remember a time when he actually allowed you to hold his hand?”
“Tomtom held my hand lots of times.”
“No Mrs… Kathy, he did not. He allowed you to hang onto his shirttails, sometimes a sleeve, but he purposely did not have skin-to-skin contact with you. It is our belief that he was unaware of why contact with you caused such a reaction in him and others, but he was wise enough to know how to prevent it happening again.”
Kathy thought back to her childhood. Deep down she knew what Severus said was true; Tomtom didn’t seem to like holding her hand. On the rare occasions when she’d taken hold of his, he’d shunned her, instead allowing her to hold onto some part of his clothing. The only time she’d touched him properly was when he’d given her a piggyback ride, she’d loved it, but he’d been tired for several days after. “It still doesn’t explain why I’m here.”
Severus sat down, giving the floor to Dumbledore once more. “You are here to… hopefully, learn how to control your Leeching ability, to decide consciously whether or not to use it, how much you wish or need to use it, and discover what you are capable of when you are in control of it.”
“And then what, you send me back to my time? You‘ve already turned my world arse-over-tit, what‘s next?”
Albus smirked and shook his head. “Unfortunately that will not be possible. Already your older self has ceased to exist, and your presence here will eventually have an affect on many people, to send you back would be to undo all of what you might accomplish in the present time.”
A bell sounded, startling them all. “Ah, supper time. I am afraid that I must ask you to remain in your rooms Mrs Ripley. Your presence in the halls would attract too much attention, and of course, the staff would wish to offer their greetings, and you now have a vague idea of what the outcome would be. Severus and I will leave you to dine in peace and think over what you have learned today. The house elves will provide you with anything you require, and we will return after supper if you would like to discuss things further.”
Severus cleared his throat. “You will be returning alone headmaster. I am extremely tired as it is, I also need to check on my Slytherins and catch up on my marking before I retire. Kathy, I bid you goodnight.”
Kathy watched nervously as he left the room. It was as if someone had taken her security blanket away. Even if he was a prat, he’d got her away from those maniacs. It still gave her the creeps to think about him being there through a large part of her childhood. “Mr Dumbledore, how come Mr Snape, well he was there, when I was a kid, but he was someone else then. You must have seen him change in that other place, the one with the big man and that dog. He did change didn’t he, I didn’t imagine it?”
“That my dear was the result of a potion. I think Severus did mention that he is a Potions Master; he is able to brew potions that will produce a wide variety of different effects. Polyjuice is one of many thousands available to us, and Severus has the intellect to brew the majority of, if not all of them. However, we can discuss this another time. I believe an elf is waiting to take your order.” He inclined his head towards the small kitchen. “Would to like me to return this evening, or would you prefer to relax and have the evening to yourself?”
“Oh erm, I don’t know. Could you come back, and I can decide then?”
“Certainly. Enjoy your meal, and I shall see you in say - an hour or so?”
Kathy nodded, distracted by the little creature standing next to her. For a moment, just one moment, when she’d seen the tiny form in her peripheral vision, she could have sworn… But it wasn’t Elizabeth, it never would be. She cradled her arms across her bosom, swaying gently, missing the feel of her little Gwen in her arms, rooting for a nipple, the clean baby smell of her filling her nostrils. She didn’t hear the old wizard say goodbye, or notice when he eyed her sadly and walked out the door.
SS
Later that night Kathy woke with a start, a guttural cry leaving her lips before she bolted up in her bed. She’d been dreaming, men in hideous masks holding onto her, David lying lifeless on the floor, her babies screams echoing in her ears. She wiped the sweat from her brow and rubbed her eyes as she fought to catch her breath, the soft, warm glow of the fire discordant with the jangling dreams still lingering throughout her half woken state.
She broke down in tears. She briefly wondered if she had any more tears left to shed, it seemed as though all she did lately was cry, and why shouldn’t she after all that had happened… recently. She threw the covers back and headed for the bathroom. She was amazed at how the torches flamed to life whenever she entered a room. She stood at the mirror and took in her haggard appearance, even her hair had small streaks of grey in it, and she was only twenty-eight. Kathy sighed and looked over to the bath, but as tempting as it was, it would be a waste to have another when she’d bathed the night before. It wasn’t as if she’d worked since her last one. Instead, she stripped of her nightgown and filled the sink with cold water, then feeling reckless she tried the hot tap, adding just enough to take away the icy chill from the water in the sink. She then proceeded to wash herself from head to toe and wondered what time it was. There were no windows in any of the rooms she occupied. ’How weird.’ She thought.
