Chapter 10
Into the
lair
Albus was
walking down the narrow muddy alley counting the door. ‘…eight door after the
crossing. But don’t bother counting, you can’t possibly miss it’ was written in
the note in his pocket and the man couldn’t wait to find out the mystery behind
that message. Finally he saw it. Crimson door that had seven posters planted to
it. The biggest poster had a photo of hurricane tearing roofs from muggle houses.
‘STOP THE GLOBAL WARNING!’ was written in bold red letters bellow the photo. It
was indeed not what he had been expecting to see and something that only a
blind man would miss. That was a good sign. Albus chuckled and knocked.
A youth
wearing butler uniform opened the door. He couldn’t have been a day past twenty
and was even quite attractive, but way too pale. All good humor that Albus felt
after seeing the posters vanished into the air. He was here on order business,
not off to save somebody, he reminded himself. “Can I help you, sir?” The
butler asked in a cold monotone, but there was definitely a note of intrigue in
his voice too.
“I am Albus
Dumbledore. Lucinda invited me.” Albus said looking anywhere, but at the boy. There
was nothing that he could do for this lost soul, and it gnawed painfully at his
conscience. The butler must have recognized his name though, because he stepped
aside and let him in.
“This way
sir.” the youth said and motioned him through dimly lit hallway. It was decorated
with old expensive canvas, other pieces of art and posters that asked for Albus
‘to feed the Africa children’ or ‘to donate
some blood to save lives’. Had he not been still feeling slightly guilty, the
elder man would have appreciated them. Now though, Albus only stored the
feelings of humor for later Finally, after they passed three or maybe four doors
the youth – who after asking him to follow, refused to utter another word –
opened one of the doors.
Three
people who were in the room turned to look at them. One of them a beautiful
brunette must have been Lucinda. She was lying on the black leather loveseat
the buttons of her black silk dress undone giving a clear sight of her breasts.
Next to her, an athletic looking man with tanned skin and dark brown hair was
keeling on the rug, holding her bare wrist close to his lips. Another man, tall
and willowy, was standing near the shelf, apparently looking for a book.
Despite her
sharp facial features, cold silver eyes, Lucinda was tantalizing. Seduction
oozed from all of them. But it seemed to Albus, that the source was mostly her.
As expected. It was, after all, within the nature of the beast to seduce. Her
creamed coffee colored hair came as a surprise, though. The color aside, all
things considering the hair was surprisingly short – it barely reached her
alabaster shoulders. She was wiling to adapt to present, it was a fact worth
recalling.
“Albus, I
am glad you decided to come. Though, I must admit, I didn’t expect you to come
so soon.” Lucinda greeted him and reached with left hand to button up her
robes, but as her other hand was still firmly held by the athlete, she finally
decided it just wasn’t worth it. The willowy man smiled at her antics.
“I too am
glad to meet you and your acquaintances, Lucinda.” Replied Albus slightly
amused, but also disconcerted by the situation. It was a first time for him, to
see a woman behave this way. No not a woman, he had to remember that.
The man
near the shelf nodded to Albus in a greeting and with an ‘excuse me’ left the
room. While he was walking past the butler, who was waiting to be released
willowy man stopped and drawled. “Mark, bring some refreshments to Lucinda’s
guest and come to Samuel’s room. He was eager to try something.” Hearing this,
the butler tensed. Still, the youth didn’t object, but nodded and followed
after the man in the same unrushed manner that he came in. Unlike the butler,
Samuel all but jumped to his feet, Lucinda’s wrist forgotten, and with an
‘exuse me’ of his own, he even forgot to greet Albus, rushed out like a
hurricane. Again, Albus didn’t know whenever to be concerned or amused.
“Refreshments…You
must forgive me, I completely forgot
them.” said Lucinda. There was a compelling in that ‘must’, one that Albus only
felt because he was master occlumens. “I am afraid, I cannot do that, my dear.”
He said in a rather strict tone and Lucinda smiled not at all concerned for
being caught. ‘Well, I had to try. Hadn’t I?’ woman’s smile seemed to say. It
was no wonder that all of her descendants happened to end in the Slytherin.
“If you
don’t mind me prying, Lucinda....” started Albus and brunette urged him to
continue. The wizard would have asked her anyway, for he really wanted to find
the answer to that question, before the things got ugly. Still it was better to
get her agreement. ”I noticed that the decorations in your home are very
interesting.” The woman cast him uncomprehending look. “The placates.” Albus
clarified. “Especially that one asking to donate blood. I must say, it would be
wonderful to have something like that at Hogwarts.” Lucinda laughed. She
started laughing so hard, she almost fell on the rug.
“Oh, it’s
one of the new children.” Lucinda said after she finally calmed down enough to
speak. “I will tell him you liked his placates. Maybe it is because he used to
be a muggle, but the child has the weirdest obsessions. Just like my dear
Anette used to…”
Albus was
at a loss. What could one say to a woman whose only daughter died because of
old age. Not only that, he didn’t really know Anette. In the end, the old
wizard settled for offering his condolences. Lucinda almost angrily brushed
them away. “There is no need to. Anette death was natural and a direct
consequence of her choice. Rather than reminiscing about past, the present should concern us more.“
Then woman
rose from the leather loveseat and moved towards the fireplace. It was both
disturbing and very sobering to see her beautiful curves enlightened, yet
casting no shadow. She is not a
woman, repeated the wizard. ’Things have
changed. We are willing to negotiate.’ has been written in that note. It was
Albus’ duty to find out what has changed, what brought about the change and
possibly to win over a powerful ally. And he wouldn’t be able to do that if he
fell for the charm.
“You know that I have tried to contact you many times before. Alas, I
have always been ignored. Why is it that this time your side decided to take
initiative, Lucinda?” Albus asked her and brunette had gall to laugh at him.
“Voldemort
tried to contact us as well.” She started “And the things that his side offered
were far more intriguing than what you offered. But, wizards’ affairs do not
concern us. Rather than fighting in your war we decided not to interfere.” It
was something that Albus has been suspecting all along. Nothing new to that
story, still it didn’t explain their changed position.
“But a few months ago Andre felt something …a
dissonance in the matrix of magic. He says it only continues to grow.” It fell
on him like a bombshell.
“How is
that possible? To feel such things?”
asked Albus. He knew, that she wouldn’t explain. Not truly. But the the idea
that something so major, it even reflected on magic, was happening, has been happening for months, and no one
noticed it… the idea shook him so much he just couldn’t no say anything. “After
the turning Andre has gained a few oracle properties.” Replied Lucinda clearly
annoyed that the elder wizard interrupted her.
“This
dissonance… it used to be very chaotic. There seemed to be no way to stop it.
The virtual doom day was inevitably coming. Yet just few hours ago Andre rushed
to me and told that the possibilities shifted. Somehow your side of war gained
a chance to stop the change.”
Aldus
sighed. He came here with hopes that after negotiation their current situation
would turn to better. But rather than getting help, he’s been told that they
already pretty bad situation was actually far worse than he could have ever
imagined. “So you want the order of phoenix to start looking for a way to stop
this dissonance, because the order are the only ones that have a chance of
succeeding. Yet we already have our hands full with Voldemort and his death
eaters.”
Lucinda
only smiled. Well, she had months to
get over the fact that the world was ending. “And we could help you to relieve
your plate, if you swore and oath to do everything to enhance my family chances
of survival.”
“I cannot
swear an oath like that. It is too ambiguous. I am not even sure the threat is
real. Please tell me, what in particular
do you want and what are you willing to
do to help our side?”
“The
dissonance is real. But you will soon become aware of it on yourself. What I
want is Andre in your school. And what I am willing to offer for it is a number.
After that, we will see.” Lucinda fell silent, obviously waiting for him to ask
the question. Albus chuckled at her antics, but didn’t disappoint her. “A
number of what?” Lucinda smiled in such a way that the old wizard instantly
knew, whatever she was going to offer, he wouldn’t be able to decline.
“Of how many horxruces Tom still has.”
XXX
It turned
out, that Lucinda didn’t actually know the number. Better, woman had means of
finding it out. ‘To prove to you that I haven’t made it up.’ she said and asked
him to wait for a few minutes.
So they
waited until Andre came in carrying Lucinda’s wand. His cheeks were flushed,
his wavy chocolate hair, that have previously been tightly bound in a
horsetail, loose and disheveled. “Here you go.” Andre said as he passed Lucinda
her wand. Then he frowned. “Samuel asked me to tell you, that you better have a
good reason for summoning me or he’s stake you.”
Lucinda
laughed. “Couldn’t even send a mental message? You really do have him on the
leash, Andre.” Seeing the man throw a glare at her Albus was reminded of
Severus. So far the old wizard was rather pleased with this new potions master
that he’d just acquired.
“Don’t
worry about me,” Lucinda continued, “for the next part, your participation is
vital. Please, throw a drop of your blood into the fire and you can go say your
goodbyes and pack. You are going to work as potions master at Hogwarts.” Andre
cast her a mock pitying look. “He will really try to kill you for this. I’m
just glad I won’t be around.” Then the man bit into his own wrist, let a drop
of blood fall into the fire – the flames turned blue – and walked out. With
amazement the old wizard realized that the blue tint of the flames was the same
color as the kites that of they’d summoned while trying to find Severus.
“These
flames will be able to show us almost anything, so long as we know how to ask
the question and how to decipher the answer.” Lucinda answered Albus’ silent
question and threw a locket of black hair into them. Then she pointed a wand at
them and cast Anima Naturalis. The
old man recognized it. It was the spell was supposed to show the state of
wizard’s soul. It was very old spell that, supposedly, no one recalled how to
cast. Apparently, this ancient spell was a child’s play for ancient
vampire.
Dark grey smoke rose from the fire, broke into
three paths and dissipated.
“Here you
go. Two. And the color of the fumes was grey, so it means that there is still
hope for him.” said brunette.
Because
helping mass murderer to redeem himself was first thing on Albus’ mind. Two.
Two more. So he had guessed correctly, the initial number has been seven. But
what did that mean it the light of the things that he already knew? No, he will
ponder upon it later. Sometime, then he wasn’t in vampire’s lair.
“Was that
Tom’s hair?” Albus asked an obvious question genuinely interested how Lucinda
managed to get something like that. Clearly, Tom wasn’t so stupid as to give
somebody a part of himself. No, wait, he was.
Lucinda
licked her lips. “Yes. Well, it is a long and old story. Rather pleasurable,
but not something that you would be interested in. Suffice to say,” she smiled
like a cat that just ate canary “Tom and I have a common past.”
Andre
walked into the room carrying a small bag on his shoulder. The Spanish looking
man followed after him. “I’m ready.” Andre said to Albus, while Samuel
completely ignored him, his all attention on Lucinda.
“Really,
lover boy isn’t my butler enough for you?” Mocked the woman and Samuel jumped
at her. Andre sneered and walked out of the room.
I was Albus’s
cue that his presence was no longer welcome in Lucinda’s lair.
