Chapter Ten:
Draco woke to the faint glow of an ever-burning candle and turned to look at Harry. The vivid green eyes watched him unblinkingly, something dark and forbidden burning brightly within them.
“You looked too peaceful to wake so I had to light a candle instead.”
“Thank you.” Sleep made his voice huskier, lower, and Draco watched as Harry’s pupils dilated in response. “Don’t even think about it. You’re wounded.”
“But I’m not dead,” Harry pointed out.
“No, but nor can you move on your own. I can’t leave without the risk of being captured by a real enemy, and my father has no way of knowing where I am to rescue me-” He broke off when he saw the troubled expression on the other man’s face. “What? What aren’t you telling me?”
“Draco, I-”
“Harry, you’re awake!” An older man with graying brown hair stepped into the room and smiled apologetically at Draco. “Forgive me for intruding, Lord Draco.”
“Remus!” Harry’s enthusiasm was undeniable and Draco merely nodded before moving towards the door. “How are you? How are the hands holding up?”
Their conversation became muffled as Draco pulled the heavy door shut and moved down the hallway. Ginny met him at the door to his room and followed him in silently. Sneering at her presumptuousness, he settled himself into the most comfortable seat and waved her towards a wooden chair.
“Whatever it is you’re after, I’ll have you know that I hold no interest when it comes to females.”
Ginny laughed. “Oh, I’ve heard the rumors about you, Lord Malfoy, and I don’t doubt that for a minute.” She sobered quickly, her blue eyes, so like the youngest Weasley boy’s, looked grave. “Your presence here brings great risk to Harry.” She held up a hand to forestall his reply. “I’m not suggesting you should leave; the local Scotsman hold little love for your family and Harry would kill me if I was found out. I only ask that you take this into consideration before you act or speak.”
“You forget, Miss Weasley, I am a prisoner here, not a friend. I will do what needs to be done for my survival, but know this; when my father comes for me, I will not look back.”
The young woman looked horribly sad for a moment, and Draco almost regretted his words. Too late to call them back, he chose instead to ignore her until she rose and left the room.

When the idle chitchat wore down, Remus looked at his pseudo-godson and asked, “Tell me, Harry, how are you, wounds aside? It’s been months since I last saw you.”
“I’ve been better, Remus, but I’ve also been worse. I’ll not complain just yet.”
“And your new friend?”
“Less a friend and more a prize at this point. I rescued him from certain death at the hands of Peter Pettigrew, but he’s oblivious to that fate that awaited him there.”
“You like him quite a bit.”
“He’s arrogant, rude, snobbish and spoiled. What is there to like?” The words were said in a serious tone, but Remus needed only to see the look in his eyes to know that Harry was already half in love with the young lord.
“He’s a very lucky young man that you chose to save him. How did you come to save him?”
“I saw him on the docks earlier that day and recognized him for Lord Lucius Malfoy’s heir. I wanted to hate him just for that, but then I saw those eyes and heard him laugh… I’ll admit it was purely lust that drove me to mark him as he boarded the schooner, but when I saw Pettigrew’s ship… Gin and I had just traded up our sweet little dingy – some sailors mistook us for lost souls – and we had made certain that they headed toward shore with little problem when I saw the flag.”
“Yes, but that was a ship full of men, was it not?”
“Thirteen in all and more than half were there by force. I slipped over, handed out bags of the coin I found in my newly acquired ship’s hold and watched them disappear. The five that remained, aside from Pettigrew, chose their fates. As I battled them, the coward signaled for reinforcements then barricaded himself in his quarters. It would have stayed and killed him, but there was a ship all ready to set sail on us. I took his prey and fled instead.”
“A wise decision. And Mr. Malfoy?”
“Was a pretty consolation prize.” Harry closed his eyes, swallowing past a sudden flare of pain in his shoulder.
Draco tiptoed away from the door. Despite the thickness of the oak he had heard every word and his anger boiled high. ‘So he thinks he can play me for a fool, eh?’ Draco slammed into his room, ignoring the painting that fell from the wall. ‘I’ll show him! He thinks he can outsmart the Prince? I’ll see him hung for holding me captive these last few weeks!’
“He was a pretty consolation prize that turned out to be more than I bargained for. Remus, is it truly possible to fall in love with someone you know almost nothing about and share no common interests with?”
“It is,” Remus smiled. “I fell in love with Sirius back before he had truly parted ways with his family. We were on opposite sides of an unofficial war, connected only through James Potter and our once friend, Peter Pettigrew. Your father was the son of a grand duke, as was Sirius, and Peter the son of an Earl. I was but a mere Baron’s youngest boy, and a sickly one at that.
“When times grew hard, I was sold to a merchant in need of an apprentice; a silversmith who knew my father well offered to help out my family, and I was the only one who had no use within the household.” He smiled and rubbed his hands together, as if to ease the chronic pain that plagued his joints. “It was a poor choice, given that I am allergic to silver, but I made do for those two years. Then he fell on bad times and I was sold once more. This man was not as kind, and I vowed I would buy my way out of his service. Luckily for me, Sirius remembered me from our childhood days and bought me instead.”
“Yes, and he brought you here. Are you happy with him, Remus?”
“Happier than I have ever been, with exception of when your father was alive.” A moment of sadness stole over him and Harry reached out to take his hand. “I saw your father only once before he died, while I was still with the silversmith. He overpaid me for some silly necklace for your mother. When the silversmith found out, he forced me to keep the money for myself, rather than add it to the tax box. I buried it beneath the tree we used to lay under. It was still there when I made Sirius take me back and we kept two coins on a chain in honor of James.” He pulled the chain out from beneath his shirt, the gold glinting brightly in the candlelight.
“My father would be glad of it.”
“Yes, I don’t doubt that he would.”
“What about Sirius? How is he doing? You can’t tell just by looking at him…”
“He is adjusting. The doctor who replaced the leg Bellatrix severed did a good job. You can’t even tell he has a wooden one.”
“There’s almost no sign of a limp,” Harry agreed.
“Yes, and they even added a base to it that can be wrapped in cloth and fitted into a shoe, so no more loud clomping.”
“I hope she’s dead and I hope she suffered greatly in the end as well.”
“Yes, well, we can all hope. Now, you need your rest and I’m sure your companion would do better at your side rather than alone in his room. Shall I fetch him for you?”
“Mmm, yes please, Remus.”
“Rest well, Harry. I’ll come visit you again tomorrow.” Remus bent and brushed a kiss to Harry’s forehead. It was a rare show of affection, and the younger man silently blessed him for it.
Remus tapped lightly on the door to Draco’s room before opening the door. For just a split second, something dangerous seemed to lurk in the depths of the mercury eyes, but before Remus had a chance to question the young man, it disappeared.
“Young Master Malfoy, Harry is waiting for you.”
Draco smiled, but it failed to reach his eyes. “I’ll be there shortly, thank you.” He waited for Remus to retreat then gathered his wits about him. Plastering on a cheerful smile, he traipsed into Harry’s room and settled himself down on the edge of the bed. “How are you feeling? Tired?”
“A bit.” Harry’s voice told a different story; the man was exhausted and only barely able to keep his eyes open.
“Go to sleep. I promise I won’t leave,” he added, and restrained a smug smile when Harry simply nodded before dropping off.
Draco read for half an hour, until he was certain that Harry was sound asleep and would not stir. Then, rising from the chair he had commandeered, he began his search of Harry’s belongings. He had hoped to find letters from Harry and his allies back in London but found only a small note in his father’s hand. As he read through it, his heart began to pound and his knuckles turned deathly white.
“You- You dirty, underhanded, conniving little shit!” Gone was the refined, cultured tone Draco had been raised to use. “You were planning to kill me this whole time? So what, you thought you’d have some fun with me first? Get me in bed and see if I’m a good fuck?” Even as he ranted, Draco carefully refolded the letter and tucked it back into its hiding spot. Then he sat down on the edge of his chair, his mind already working out a plan for revenge.
