By Gringots Harry and Oliver had created quite a stir. The two men jogged up the steps and into the building; Harry heard the guards halt the few people who tried to follow. Inside peace reigned. The goblins went about their business without a glance for the two famous wizards approaching the main counter. Both men stated their names and presented their wands. “See you back here in a bit,” Oliver called as he headed for the private banking offices and Harry headed towards his vault.
At the entrance to the vaults Harry ran into Ginny, literally. “Oooff. Watch it you,” Ginny started, then looked up. “oh, Harry, it’s you.” She hugged and kissed him. “What are you doing out and about?”
“Oliver and I are taking on the list that Draco gave me for the party.” He shrugged indifferently. “But Oliver has some business here too so I’m on my own for my vault.”
The goblin with Harry cleared his throat. “Sir, to which vault are we going today?”
“To mine.”
“Sir, you have three vaults. Are we going to all of them?”
“Three?” Harry looked at Ginny.
“Harry, there’s the one from your parents, the one that was Sirius’s personal vault and the Black family vault. That also belonged to Sirius as the last heir and since you’re his heir that is yours as well now.”
That is correct, Madame.” The goblin gave Ginny a slight bow. “Will Mrs. Weasley-Longbottom be escorting Mr. Potter to these vaults?”
Ginny glanced at Harry’s confused face. “Yes, please. We’ll start with the vault that was the personal vault of Sirius Black first.” As the goblin led them to the correct cart track she said to Harry, “Unless you are attached to Sirius’s vault, you should transfer everything to the Potter vault and release the other back to Gringots.”
“Why,” Harry asked. This sort of thing was way outside his realm of knowledge.
“Right now you are paying fees on three vaults. We’ll skip the Black family vault today. Neville should join you and I and bring two others when we open that one. Sirius’s vault is on an upper level; the Potter vault originally belonged to your great great somethings and is on one of the deepest levels.
“Oh” was all Harry had time to say before they began the stomach-churning wild ride to their first stop. On wobbly legs they stood before the vault of Sirius Black. “I’ve never been here before, didn’t even know it existed.”
“The last Mr. Black had this vault before his unfortunate incarceration.” The goblin explained. “At which time his assets were frozen. The ministry never moved to claim them so upon his post humus exoneration Gringots transferred ownership to you, Mr. Potter, as his heir.” He gestured Harry closer to the vault. “Now if you would be so kind.” Harry and the goblin placed their hands on the stone to reveal a door that opened to Harry’s touch. The goblin waited outside while Harry and Ginny entered.
It was a small vault, at most ten feet square, perfect for the young single wizard Sirius had been when he took it. In the back left corner a large old cauldron leaned against the wall, three quarters full of gold and silver coins. Along the right wall three wooden chests stood open, revealing what looked to be all the worldly possessions of a young Sirius Black. Harry moved towards these while Ginny headed for the money. He had just picked up a book from the first chest when he heard Ginny curse.
“What happened?” Harry strode to Ginny, wand out, the book still held in his left hand.
“The damn cauldron shocked me when I tried to reach in. I should’ve known better. See if you can do it.”
Harry put his wand away and slowly reached out; his hand passed below the lip of the cauldron and he grabbed a handful of coins. “I guess the spell works like Kreacher’s loyalty did originally,” Harry said. “I’m Sirius’ heir so I can touch it.” He thought a moment then addressed the cauldron. “I, Harry Potter, give Ginerva Weasley Longbottom permission to touch anything that belongs to me in Gringots Bank or out.” He smiled at Ginny. “Try now.”
Ginny reached into the cauldron and grabbed a handful of coins. “Good thinking. Now, do you want to move all this to the Potter vault and release this one?”
“If you think that’s best.” Ginny nodded and Harry followed her back out of the vault.”
“Mr. Potter would like the contents of this vault moved to the Potter vault and the bank my reclaim this one. Also, Mr. Potter will pay no more fees relating to this vault effective now.”
“As you wish, madam.” The goblin bowed to Ginny and turned to Harry. “Would you like to move the contents personally or have the bank move them for you?”
“Personally and now please,” Harry said, having read Ginny’s lips from where she stood behind their escort. The goblin bowed and stepped aside. Ginny and Harry returned to the vault where Ginny covered the cauldron tightly with an old cloak before they magicked everything into their cart. After another, longer, ride they stood before another vault. Harry went through the motions of opening the door and he and Ginny transferred the cauldron into the vault. Inside Harry found more galleons than he remembered. “Ginny, I don’t remember this much gold being in here.”
“You earn interest on your deposits if you register them with the bank. If you want, you can loose the interest and gain privacy.”
“We’ll talk about that later.” Harry started to sort the coins from the cauldron into piles by type.
“Harry, please stop.” Ginny rolled her eyes. She drew her wand, muttered a spell under her breath and all of the coins in the room spun into the air. As Harry watched, gold separated from silver, galleons from knuts. When the metallic whirlwind subsided everything was neatly stacked and Ginny had a slip of parchment with a total on it. “Here you go. Decide weather you want to disclose the amount to the bank on the way up.” She handed him the slip and he gasped.
“That’s a lot, right?”
“Yes, Harry, it is.” She smiled at him. “So get the best of the best for this party I keep hearing about.”
“You keep hearing about my party?”
“Draco wont shut up about it! He’s obsessed; I’m surprised he let you shop without him.”
“Well his list is very specific and he was afraid Oliver would be jealous of the amount of time we’ve spent together preparing,” Harry said.
Ginny just looked at Harry and laughed again. “Oh, I’ve heard all about the planning.”
“I didn’t realize you talked to Draco so much. What’s he been saying?”
She looked at Harry’s eager face for a moment, assessing the big dopey smile. She looked at her watch. “That its time to get what you came for so we can meet Oliver back in the lobby. I haven’t seen him since we were all at your place.”
