Chapter Title: Waking and Blurting
Severus woke up and groaned softly, hurting all over his body. He opened his eyes and stared around, wondering what had happened. He remembered suddenly feeling ill and had gone into the kitchen to get some milk, which always soothed his stomach. He remembered falling but didn’t remember hitting the ground or anyone coming after him. He heard some movement beside him and turned his head only to see a sight that he had never thought he would see.
Harry Potter was adjusting his position in Severus’ chair, dead asleep. Severus sat up slowly and started to wake the boy up but thought better of it and took the extra time to actually look at the boy, though he didn’t look like a boy anymore.
His black hair was waist-length with some slight spiking on the top of his head. His skin was tanned, suggesting that he had spent a lot of time out in the sun, and, while he remained slim, Severus could see some defined muscles in the young man’s arms and legs. Harry was wearing a sleeveless shirt and Severus saw the tattoo on his right shoulder. It was a beautifully done raven that was spread across his shoulder. It was then that Severus realized that Potter hadn’t been wearing glasses, so he must have done something to his eyes to correct them. Severus sighed before reaching out and gently placing his hand on Harry’s forearm, preparing to shake him.
He didn’t need to though; Harry woke up the minute their skin touched. He sat up straight and alert before looking at Severus. Severus felt shocked when he realized that the once emerald had dulled to a jade green in the boy’s eyes. The minute that he realized who he was staring back at, his eyes softened back to the emerald that reminded Severus of Lily.
“Professor! You’re awake.” Severus nodded slowly before clearing his throat. To his surprise, his throat wasn’t dry but it was still difficult to use.
“What happened?” He asked the young man who sighed.
“The combination of Cruciatus curse and the Dark Mark was wearing your body down. The Dark Mark is much slower, though, so it was mostly the Cruciatus curse that got you into trouble.” Seeing the confusion, Harry explained; “The effects of Cruciatus don’t fade away like many believe. That’s why your hands were shaking so badly. Your body was attempting to fight it off like it would an infection, for instance. The Dark Mark, on the other, is dark magic and therefore magic consuming. You were being drained while you were exerting yourself, in other words.
“By the time I found you, you had already been coughing up blood and going through magical backlash. Your magic was still trying to fight the Cruciatus curse so you also had a rather nasty fever on top of that. I managed to get you to cool down and went to get my notes on the Dark Mark. I’d been studying it, hoping to have a successful potion by Christmas to surprise you, Lucius, and Draco. I managed, with the few notes I had, to brew a successful one within a few hours along with the Cruciatus-Reversal potion.
“Once I got those into you, it was more of a matter of wait and see. Lucius and Draco both have been dosed with the potion, so none of you have the Dark Mark anymore.” At those words, Severus glanced at his left arm and, for the first time in almost nineteen years, there was only pale flesh. “Unfortunately, Lucius has developed some scarring but it is not bad. I managed to fight your fever off and then it was up to you. You managed to be unconscious for five days, worrying everybody, by the way, but there won’t be any lasting effects.” Severus listened with astonishment at what the boy had accomplished and shock at the task he had taken up on Severus’ behalf.
“You didn’t have to cure me, Potter.” Harry smiled grimly; his eyes shifting back to jade.
“I know, but I was going to anyway. Might as well help out, right?” Severus was as surprised as Potter was when he snorted lightly at the joke. “Anyway, would you like to see Lucius and Draco?” Severus nodded slowly, uncertain of the young man now but wanting to see his best friend and his godson. “’K, be right back with them.”
Harry walked out of the bedroom and leaned up against the wall. He took a deep breath but, before he could sigh, the fireplace turned green. Lucius glided out of the fire and frowned at Harry. When Snape was sick, Harry hadn’t left his side but Lucius couldn’t ask before Draco walked in. Father and son had gotten into a routine about checking up on Severus and Harry couldn’t have happier about it.
“He’s awake and wants to see you two.” Harry told them softly before walking out with his head low. Lucius frowned but Draco stopped.
“You go get Sev and I’ll take care of Harry. I know what’s wrong with him.”
Harry was walking through the outside corridors without really thinking about where he was going but he really didn’t care where he went at this point. He finally stopped and slammed his back against a wall, the breath whooshing out of his chest. He slid down to the floor and wrapped his right arm around his right knee. He used the other arm to brace himself and stretched his left leg out. He wasn’t paying attention but someone stepped in front of him and then stopped. Harry could see the boot but didn’t look up.
“Harry, you okay?” Harry looked up into the gray eyes of Draco.
“Aren’t you supposed to be with him?” Harry asked the other boy and Draco sighed before sitting down next to Harry.
“Suppose so, but you worried both me and dad, so I told him I’d take care of you while he deals with Sev. You didn’t answer my question.” Harry sighed but finally shook his head.
“No, Draco, I’m not okay. I told him what all had happened and all he could say was ‘you didn’t have to cure me, Potter’, almost as if he was brushing me off and I hated it. He could have said thank you or even just said Harry instead of Potter, and I’d be okay. Nope. Gotta hurt Potter somehow or he’ll hurt you.”
“You know about that, huh?” Harry nodded slowly and Draco sighed. “I can understand being upset that he said that but you know he doesn’t mean anything by it. He doesn’t know how to deal with people helping him, even if it’s just dad. He never has and probably never will. I don’t know what to tell you other than that, Harry. You wanted to do this for him and now you wish you didn’t.”
“I never said that, Draco. I just wish he could have seen me instead of seeing that I saved his life and put him in my debt, you know? He could have just seen me, seen that I had done this for him, but all he saw was that there was another debt to be paid, supposedly.” Draco listened to Harry and understood better than he had before.
“Then I’m sorry, Harry. I misunderstood you but I don’t know how to help you.” Harry sighed before rising up.
“I don’t either, Draco, but you better get back to him, ‘cause your dad’s about to leave. Tell him I said ‘bye’, ‘k?” Draco nodded, knowing that Harry needed some time away from everyone for a while, before standing up himself.
“Will.”
Severus was sitting upright when Draco finally walked in.
“You’re late.” Severus told the young man who shook his head.
“I wouldn’t be if you wouldn’t give him so much trouble, Sev.” Severus frowned as Draco sat down beside him. “You know what I’m talking about.”
“I’m afraid I don’t know, Draco, but I pretend I do if that makes you feel better.” Severus replied and Draco looked at him. Draco must have something unusual because his eyes widened as if he had seen a ghost.
“You…really don’t know?” Severus shook his head and Draco sighed before running his hands through his hair. “Harry thinks you do, so never told you, but how in the hell can you be that blind?” He asked Severus, seeming to be exasperated.
“I never really paid attention to him until today is how. Now explain what you are going on about.” Severus finally snapped and Draco stared at him.
“What do you mean ‘until today’? You actually noticed him and still said that?”
“Said what?”
“’You didn’t have to cure me, Potter’. You know, now that I think about it, I agree with Harry. A ‘thank-you’ would have been nice.”
“I don’t say that word and you know it. Besides, why should Potter be offended by that? I never asked him to help me and the brat did…”
“Because he’s in love with you!”
CubStyxx- “Sorry about the cliffy but I think it’s kinda good.”
