Tonks zipped up the dress and stood back to admire her. "Amazing, Caridei"
Caridei studied herself. The dress was a burgundy red, with and off the shoulder cut. It hugged her body all the way to her thighs, before flaring at the bottom. It was trimmed at the sleeves and the hem with gold that glistened in the light of her flat. More gold trim wrapped the dress at her hips and dropped down the back of the dress and its train. Tongs was right. It was amazing.
"Only one more accessory." Caridei said before changing back into Susan landings. Gold glitter dusted her short black hair. The dress was no less stunning, but Caridei didn't feel quite as splendid.
"I'd better go." Tonks said, "You'll have to leave soon, won't you?"
"I don't know. I haven't received the invitation. Malfoy may have forgotten." almost instantly, she heard a tapping at her window. They turned to see a large barn owl with a gold envelope in his beak. Susan opened the window and the owl flew in. He dropped the card on the sofa and flew to the mantle, watching Susan with suspicious eyes.
"Good luck." Tonks said, squeezing her hand quickly. With a "pop" she apparated out of the flat.
"A little unprofessional, aren't you?" Susan asked the bird as she crossed the room. As she grabbed the invitation, she felt the immediate pull from behind her navel. A split second later and Susan was in front of Malfoy Manor. "A portkey." she said, looking at the invitation. It was embossed in green and had her name on the card inside. "What if I had changed my mind?"
Snow was falling, but not landing anywhere on the manor or the ground around. Though she had no cloak, Susan still felt warm, and she realized that the home must have a protective shield around it, keeping the heat, and quite probably the guests, inside. Around her, other guests, couples, were dropping in. They dusted themselves off and began to walk into the house. Susan wondered how many people would be coming in alone, like she was. She followed a young brunette couple inside the house.
The Manor had not changed, except for the decorations. Green and gold were the colors for this party and Christmas trimming were everywhere. Distant music was playing and the air smelled of warm cinnamon. It was almost pleasant there. She recognized the dark walls and the portraits of Malfoys long dead. She suppressed a shudder at the thought of the cold evil that lived in the house, hidden behind the warmth of the holiday. They passed into the ballroom and the party came to life. Two suits of armor stood guard at the top of grand staircase, which lead down to the dance floor. A full orchestra played Christmas music at the far end of the room and couples were already waltzing across the floor. On either side of the orchestra, two thirty foot Christmas trees, decorated in gold and green, rotated slowly. To her right, a long table held hors d'oeuvres. The large doors behind the table led out into the garden and Susan could see a few people standing out on the balcony. Thousands of candles lit the room, floating all around the party.
The couple ahead of her slid their card into the visor of one of the suits of armor. A magical voice echoed over the music, announcing the young duo as they glided down the stairs. Susan decided she did not want the entire room aware of her presence and followed the couple. With a metallic clank, the pikes that the suits held were crossed, crossing her path. Sighing, Susan dropped her own invitation into the visor and heard her name above the music. A few people turned her way, but other than that she went unnoticed.
At the bottom of the stairs, a house elf offered her a glass of wine, which she took. Another directed her towards the food and pointed out that plates were bewitched to float and follow their owner, leaving the hands of the party goers free. He informed her that her glass would do the same. Much to the elf's surprise, Susan thanked him and began to survey the room. She recognized a few people, Death Eaters mostly. Crabbe and Goyle, with their wives. Macnair came alone. Bellatrix Lestrange scoured over the party with her husband tossing back wine behind her. Suppressing a sneer, Susan took a sip of wine and maneuvered herself to the balcony.
Just like the front of the house, the snow was not making it to the ground and the warmth spread out from the party. Candles floated all around the balcony and were dispersed through the garden. It was a peaceful night and Susan smiled, in spite of herself. A few couples were admiring the greenery, discussing the grandeur of the party. She sipped on her wine and enjoyed the evening for a brief moment, preparing herself for the task at hand.
With a deep voice that echoed through room, she heard a suit of armor announce "Master Lucius Malfoy, Mistress Narcissa Malfoy, Draco Malfoy. Your gracious hosts for this wonderful evening." Susan rolled her eyes as the orchestra played a flourish. She made it inside and saw Lucius and Narcissa crossing the ballroom arm in arm with their son, Draco, behind them. The crowd parted reverently and Susan thought how amazing it was that money can command such a sense of power amongst peers. Power, but not respect. The family turned and a house elf brought a glass of wine up to each family member.
Susan remembered when Draco was born almost two months before Harry. He had turned into a handsome young man, much like his father. A part of her hoped that the similarities stopped there, thought she was sure they didn't.
"Friends," Lucius began, "we welcome you tonight to our humble home. Please enjoy yourselves this evening, but first, a toast." Everyone raised their glasses and Lucius cleared his throat. "To the past year, we bid a fond farewell as it has marked a momentous occasion. May the next y ear be exponentially so. Numquam Corupta!"
"Semper Purus!" the room echoed with the elitist phrase. The witches and wizards all drank. Susan followed suit.

“Miss Landings” Susan turned at the sound of Lucius’ voice. The Malfoy family stood before her. “Allow me to introduce my wife, Narcissa, my son, Draco.” Susan nodded her head to each in turn as Lucius gestured towards his family.
“I am honored, ma’am.” she said to Narcissa, “Thank you for inviting me to your lovely home.”
“Not at all. What a stunning gown you are wearing.”
“Thank you, ma’am”
“Too bad though,” Draco interrupted, “I can think of about ten women in this room it would look better on. “ Susan glared at him. It was clear that he was like his father. The boy could only exert his power through insults.
“Now Draco,” Lucius said, “Don’t be rude. Miss Landings is our guest tonight. Not our employee.” His tone implied that he shared his son’s sentiments. “Please enjoy yourself, if you need anything, a house elf will assist you.”
Susan spent much of the night on the outskirts of the party, watching the Malfoys and the other Death Eaters as they interacted with each other. She walked through the plan multiple times. About an hour into the festivities, she felt ready. Slipping behind a column, Susan quickly transformed into Caridei and stepped back into the crown.
Lucius was on the dance floor with a Goyle’s wife. Caridei found a younger wizard she had picked out earlier and walked up behind him at the food table. He was tall with brown hair and brown eyes. He was handsome and had danced with quite a few witches that evening. Most importantly, he had come alone.
“Imperius” Caridei whispered and the young man jerked. She turned him around and linked her arm in his, “Dance with me. “
The young wizard was good on the dance floor and he maneuvered Caridei through the crowded room well. She instructed him to get close to Malfoy and then hid amongst the other dancers. As they passed Lucius and his partner, she turned her gaze to him, catching his eye. One spin into the crowd and she was Susan again, entranced by her young partner. She waited a few seconds for Lucius to turn his gaze back towards Goyle’s wife, before instructing the wizard to repeat the same moves.

On the dance floor
Lucius spun again, a little too quickly. Mary Goyle giggled like a fool. She was drunk and rambling on about how much better Hogwarts was becoming, since Dolores Umbridge was the High Inquisitor. Lucius ignored her as he scanned the floor.
He had seen her again. He was sure of it. Twice the woman had swirled by, her hair flying. He remembered those ice blue eyes that pierced him to the soul. A second glance, however, and she wasn’t’ there. He couldn’t be imagining it, could he? A Malfoy was smarter than that.
Caridei Burke.
The Dark Lord had asked for her multiple times since his return. It drover Lucius’ sister in law mad with jealousy. Voldemort had a strange fascination with Caridei. Like she was his pet, his bird. His rare, beautiful, deadly bird. She was beautiful, more so than any other Death Eater, or their wives. Lucius had often fantasized over her. That long golden hair, flowing down her back. The way her hips moved as she sauntered into meetings. Her breasts as they rested on the table as she argued with Bellatrix. He knew he was not alone in wondering what those breasts felt like his mouth. Every wizard did.
Still she had not returned when they had been called. She had disappeared after the Dark Lord’s fall and no one had seen her since. She had become a ghost. Dead to the wizarding world.
Lucius shook it off and pretending to be interested in Mary again. He had to be imagining it. The song would soon be over, thank goodness. Goyle’s wife was incredibly dull, but then again, so was Goyle.
“Lucius” he heard her whisper. Without thinking he spun around. Mary squealed with delight, but was ignored. Lucius looked left and right, but didn’t see her. The song ended and he released Mary from his arms. He didn’t see her. He saw Draco, the Parkinson girl in his arms. Crabbe was with his troll of a wife. Even his assistant had found a partner, though the man looked dazed and uninterested. No Caridei.
Could he have had a little too much as well?

“You’ll remember nothing.” Caridei told her dance partner as the she release him from the curse. With a smile, she excused herself to the table and grabbed another glass of wine. She was Susan once more.
Lucius was playing host again, though he looked slightly flustered. A crowd of men surrounded him, as the orchestra struck up again. With another quick check to be sure no one saw, she changed one more time. Catching the corner of his eye again, she passed quickly through to the balcony. She saw luscious struggling to get through the crowd, as politely as possible, before she hurried into a dark corner of the garden and transformed into a shrubbery.
Lucius rushed to the balcony and into the garden. Frustrated, he searched the bushes, looking for her. Caridei the shrub had to stifle a laugh as he turned left, and then right, then left again. Fooling Lucius Malfoy was fun.
“Lucius,” Narcissa called from the balcony, “what are you doing.”
“Looking…for…something.” Exasperation was evident in his voice.
“Come in my dear, we have guests still. What will they think to see you twirling like a fool?”
Lucius sighed but obeyed. Frustrated, he stormed to the balcony and took Narcissa’s arm. With a slight moment to recompose, he glided back to his party.
Caridei changed back into herself and slipped into a corner formed in the stone wall around the garden. Sighing, she leaned against the cool stone, her back to the manor and chuckled her plan was going well. In a few days, she would send him a note. He would then be certain of her return and would inform He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. The Dark Lord would call her again, and this time she would answer. It was risky, but she was confident.
Someone crashed into Caridei, interrupting her thoughts and sending her forward into the wall in front of her. Without thinking, she turned to see Draco. He had drug his dance partner, Parkinson, to the same dark corner to hide. Her hair was disheveled and her dress was halfway off, exposing her small breasts. Her nipples glistened in the moonlight and Caridei imagined that they had been interrupted by Lucius. They clearly were looking for a little bit more privacy and, astounded, had found Caridei.
“What are you doing here?” Draco spat. The girl giggled, drunk.
“I could ask you the same Draco Malfoy.” Caridei answered She heard her own voice and realized that she had not changed back into Susan Landings. Her stomach dropped.
“Get dressed Pansy.” Draco commanded the girl. “Go back inside.” She looked like she would protest, but didn’t. With a huff she stormed back to the house, fixing her dress and her hair along the way.
“ I know you?” the young Malfoy asked. “I recognize you. You are in pictures of the original Death Eaters. My father told me about you. Banks…no BURKE! Caridei Burke. I remember. Why didn’t he introduce me to you earlier? “You didn’t return when the Dark Lord called this time though…” Caridei was speechless as she watched the truth unfold him Draco’s mind. He was clever; she had to give him that.
“What are you wearing?” Draco studied her body, circling her. Caridei stood there, her heart racing. “That’s the same gown my father’s assistant was wearing. You fit it much better than she does though…”You…you’re a metamorphmagus. My father told me, that’s why you were so vital in the first war….You’ve been posing as his assistant haven’t you? You’ve been fake this whole time. You clever bitch. Just wait until…OOF!”
Stunning him the gut, Caridei rushed past the stunned Draco who rolled over, shouting obscenities. She quickly changed into Susan, hid her wand, and rushed into the ballroom. Her eyes found Lucius and Narcissa across the room. If she hurried, she could make it out without them noticing. She pushed through the crowd as swiftly and carefully as she could. A house elf offered another glass of wine, which she declined. She tried to climb the stairs as quickly as possible, without drawing attention. She was almost to the top when she heard the spell. A millisecond later, she was on the stairs, the wind knocked out of her. The room went silent and she turned to see Draco, covered in dirt and scorch marks on his shirt. His wand was raised and he showed that famous Malfoy smirk.
“Draco” his mother shrieked, “What is the meaning of this?”
“She’s not who you think she is father, “ Draco announced, “It’s her. The one you’ve been looking for.”
Lucius turned to Susan, astounded. With long, angry strides, he crossed the room and climbed the stairs. Grabbing her arm, he jerked her to her feet, nose to nose with him. For a moment he studied her, anger boiling in his eyes. With a snap of his fingers, a house elf presented him with his cane. Lucius drew his wand and pointed it at Susan’s chest.
“Homorphus Revelum”
Pain, burning, cleansing pain, coursed from the tip of the wand. With no power to stop it, Susan felt her skin changing. It was nothing like the soothing warmth of Dumbledore’s hands the night he found her. This was forceful. A spell, insisting that every cell in her body change against its will. It took only seconds before Caridei Burke stood where Susan once did.
“Hello Lucius” she gasped. Her gaze had never left his.
“You filthy, vile, wretch of a witch!” Bellatrix’s shrill voice pierced the tension. “Coward! How do you dare?” she was pushing forward through the crowd.
“Quiet, Bellatrix.” Lucius’ voice was dangerously smooth. He flicked his wand and the decorations all around were instantly gone. “The party is over. The shield is lifted. Leave, all of you.” An uncomfortable pause followed as partygoers looked at each other. “Now!” Lucius bellowed.
The pops of apparating witches and wizards filled the room. Never faltering, Lucius waiting until the last of them left. Narcissa looked on worried as Bellatrix and Draco held their wands at the ready.
“Your wand, Burke.” Lucius whispered. “ Where is it?”
“Back of my dress.” She felt him reach around and slip his hand down the inside of her gown. His hand searched, gliding well past where her wand rested. “Careful, Lucius. Your wife is watching. Don’t be fresh.”
“You are in no position to make any sort of demands.” Still he pulled her want out and tossed it to his son. “Incarcerous” ropes shot from his wand and wrapped around Caridei, squeezing her ribs and twisting over her skin. He flicked his wand and lifted her to the center of the room, where she dangled helplessly. She watched him, but never flinched. Lucius descended the stairs to his family and took a glass of wine from Narcissa. Tossing it back, he shuddered and went to find another one.
Bellatrix stepped over to Caridei.” So, little Caridei Burke has come home. Do you think He’ll forgive you? Hmm? Do you believe your favor runs that far with the Dark Lord? Maybe he will let me kill you, deserting whore!”
“Narcissa,” Caridei called, “has your sister always been this desperate, or is it just when her love goes unrequited? Really Bellatrix, all these years and you are still obsessed with our master? Call Voldemort then, tell him of the mouse you’ve found, maybe he’ll pat you on the head.”
Bellatrix’s eyes flared, “FUCKING BITCH!” she shrieked as she shot flames at Caridei. The hem of her dress caught fire and Narcissa screamed. Caridei thrashed in mid air, kicking at the fire and trying desperately to move away from her attacker. “You don’t deserve to have his name on your lips.”
With a wave of his wand, Lucius disarmed Bellatrix and narcissi to her sister in her arms. Draco lowered Caridei and extinguished the flames. Still in her bindings, Caridei turned her body towards Bellatrix.
“Coward. Fighting an unarmed opponent. Is that what you’ve become? It will take more than a sparkler for me Lestrange.”
“Next time I’ll dig your eyes out with my own fingers.”
“Enough,” Lucius bellowed. He picked up Caridei and held her in front of him. Her back rested on his chest. “ You deserted us, and yet you call her a coward. How hypocritical.”
“I’ll not explain myself to you, Lucius.”
He laughed in her ear. She shivered as he turned his face, inhaling the scent of her hair. “Gone for so long. I wonder how the Dark Lord will punish you.” She felt a bulge growing behind her, pressing on her buttocks.
“You disgust me, Malfoy.”
“I’m sure, I’m a much better companion than you think.” He brought his arms over her shoulder and around in front of her, rolling up his left sleeve. The Dark Mark, a snake twisting through a skull, was emblazoned on his forearm, the same place as all the other Death Eaters’ mark. “I wonder if The Dark Lord will be as gentle as I am. Let us see what he has to say, hmm?”
Caridei watched as he touched his wand to the Mark. The snake began to twist and write in the skull. Black smoke suddenly billowed down from the ceiling of Malfoy Manor, filling the floor of the ballroom. Caridei heard Bellatrix’s maniacal laughter , watching the column of smoke. Soon, it receded from around their ankles, as if being sucked back in. There he stood.
Lord Voldemort had come to Malfoy Manor.
