Walking around outside, though there was nothing to do, Harry actually found himself fascinated talking with Lucius. It wasn't that the older man would tell him exactly where he was, no, he just gave up that they were around Sherwood Forest but it was more like what they were talking about. First, there was the history of the place, something he did find fascinating. He had enjoyed hearing about it, as this place had apparently been here for a very long time. Next, Lucius, as he walked around with him, showed him how to detect the wards and explain what was there and how to tell which was which. Since coming into the Wizarding World, he had heard all about wards, especially the blood wards that were supposed to protect him, but didn't know anything about them beyond that. This was like getting a crash course in them. Not only that, the way Lucius was explaining them, and how they were layered, was in a way he could easily understand it. That he liked. Along with that, the older man seemed more than happy to answer any question he had about things.
Stopping at one of the clearings around the house that had a small area where you could sit in it, they took a seat and Lucius ran the younger man through some detection spells to show just what wards were there, what they did and how they were layered. That was, to Harry, fascinating and it was the first time that anyone had ever bothered to explain such things to him. With what he knew about things taught at Hogwarts, it wasn't something he would ever learn in school either. So, if things went according to the norm, he would go out into the Wizarding World as an adult without having the most basic information that he would need. There was a great deal wrong with that from the way he saw it. Lucius, when he mentioned that, agreed with him. Then the older man told him that it was yet another failing of the educational system in Britain when it came to Wizards and the reason for the high attrition rate of Muggle-borns going back to the Muggle world after a few years.
Having never heard about that before, Harry had asked quite a few questions about it, learning that the Wizarding World lost about half the Muggle-borns back to Muggle society within a few years of them graduating because they were reluctant to give up the conveniences they had there and how they weren't taught enough about Wizarding society, let alone the most basic things that they would need to know, to feel like they fit in. Unless they married a wizard, they were fairly apt to return to the place they were most comfortable in. Harry found it not only astonishing but sad as well. He also voiced that it was the Wizarding World's loss to lose so many. Lucius agreed with that completely.
While sitting there having a relaxing spot of tea with some biscuits, Lucius began teaching Harry the basic warding spells and how to do them. As the wards that he was using were already there, casting them wouldn't change anything. Though it took him a couple times to get them right, Harry was pleased that he caught on quickly and now had the basics of what to do with them in place. While doing that, Lucius explained to him how they could also be used for other things and could be built on to create a temporary ward to guard a room or something such as that.
As Lucius was walking him through some of the most basic of modifications on the easiest of the warding spells, Harry stiffened up. A very familiar chill and feeling of dread began to dance over him. Having been around the Dementors so much during his third year, he was well aware of what they felt like when they were just making themselves known. Standing up, wand clutched tightly in his hand, he looked around. “Lucius? Can you feel it? It sure feels like Dementors to me!”
Standing, Lucius could feel the cold and a deep dread creep in on quiet little paws, his skin prickling as the first waves from the evil creatures touched him. Holding his wand in a death grip, he put a hand on Harry's shoulder then gave it a reassuring squeeze. “They can't get through the wards, don't worry. One of them is set up specifically against Dementors. However, that doesn't mean we won't feel the effects of them, even in the house. I would suggest that we cast a Patronus to keep the effects away until they depart.”
Without a second thought, Harry cast his Patronus and watched the stag canter back and forth in front of him while it seemed to glare at the Dementors that were just now materializing in front of where Harry stood on the other side of the wards. “Why are they here? Who sent them,” Harry asked, shuddering still but feeling better as the stag was keeping away the worst of the effects from the vile creatures.
Casting his own Patronus, a large cobra, Lucius shook his head, “That I don't know, Harry. The Dark Lord, though in negotiations with them again, doesn't have their backing yet so they aren't likely to follow his orders at this moment. As far as I know, the Ministry is in control of them.” That disturbed Lucius. Once more, it troubled him that the vile creatures were even there but he noticed that, though he had cast his own spell, the Dementors, though they shrunk back slightly, continued to focus on Harry. That bothered him.
Watching a couple of the disgusting creatures float back and forth in front of where Harry was, despite him guiding his own Patronus trying to get their attention, he said, hoping like hell he was wrong about this but fearing he was right, “Stop your Patronus, Harry.”
Though puzzled by that, Harry stopped the spell then waited. He wasn't sure what Lucius was going for but he was going to see what it was.
Looking over, he could see the Dementors milling back and forth, seemingly confused. That bothered the older man slightly and gave him more of an indication that they were directing what they were doing right at Harry rather than just being out here on their own.
Waiting to see if his Patronus even pulled them, he sighed when it didn't then directed Harry to move onto the other side of him, down a ways. When the younger man was at the opposite of where he had been, quite a ways away from the place the Dementors were, he told him, “Cast your Patronus again, Harry.”
Nodding, Harry did as he was told and cast his stag once more. Almost instantly, the Dementors honed in on the place where Harry's stag was and shifted down that way. Giving Lucius an almost panicked look, he swallowed thickly, shivering from the effects of the Dementors, though that was muted by his stag, as well as a creeping feeling that something really wasn't right here.
Swallowing thickly, Lucius was sure this was not normal. Dementors weren't picky about prey and would take anyone, not ignore one for someone in particular. That meant they were sent by someone and, from a quick deduction, honing in on Harry's magical signature. No, this wasn't good and they had to get out of there now! No one or nothing could get though the wards around this place and most couldn't communicate with Dementors but it was best they get the hell out just in case.
Feeling an urgency pounding in his chest, he told Harry, voice as low as he could get it, “Harry, we need to get out of here.”
Even with his Patronus patrolling in front of him, Harry could still feel some of the effects of creatures, setting off things in his head he didn't want to hear or deal with. Nodding, he began backing away towards the house, keeping a close eye on the creatures. Though the wards were holding and they couldn't get through, they seemed to be focusing in on him and his Patronus. That he didn't like and it gave him an eerie feeling.
Grabbing Harry's arm, Lucius practically dragged the young man inside then called the head of his house elves. Quickly, he told him to pack up all their things and transfer them to Avalon Manor. Turning to the young man, he said, “We need to get out of here. And, though you aren't going to like this, you need to leave your wand here. We have some spare ones at Avalon Manor. You will find one that's close to compatible with those so you won't be without until we can get you out and buy one. They are honing in on your magical signature, Harry. Which means, they are trying to find you. No one can trace you here through that, except the Dementors, but they found you which means someone else can. I know you won't like this, but you saw how they acted.”
Harry's first instinct was to argue. It was, after all, his wand and he wanted to keep it until it was proven that he needed another one but he, too, had seen the way they acted when he cast the Patronus. “You have wands there that I can use?”
“Boxes of them, Harry. Many. You will find one that you can use. I swear on my magic that we'll get you out to buy one as soon as we can,” Lucius told him gravely, looking around to ensure that there was nothing that he specifically needed to grab. Only thing he could think of was the books they had sorted through earlier. As it was, he wanted out of here, fast!
Thinking that over, Harry remembered the way the creatures had reacted and shivered. It made sense. “As long as I can get a wand that works when we get there.” He told Lucius finally.
“You will,” Lucius nodded. “Now, it's best we get out of here now. I can contact Severus and have him pick up the cauldrons then one of the elves can take him. Everything else will be moved by the elves.”
“What about Hedwig? Normally, she would fly there,” Harry told him, thinking about the one constant companion in his life since he learned what he was. She, as always, was important enough that he was worried about her.
That wasn't something Lucius had thought of. Normally, he would send the owl off on her own, sure she would find the young man. As distinctive as she was, though, there was no way he was willing to chance that. That meant she had to go with one of the elves. Calling one of the elves that dealt with the owls, he told Harry, “Dwiggle will take her. She won't like it and her feathers will be ruffled from it but I don't want to chance those beasts out there following her since almost everyone knows what your owl looks like. Go back and explain it to her then we'll go.” Normally, he wouldn't have done that but there was a bond between the young man and owl that would put both of them at ease. He was certain that Harry couldn't understand the bird but he was also just as sure the owl could understand him.
Nodding, knowing Lucius wanted out of there fast, he dashed back to his room. Hedwig, though it was daytime, was awake and alert, her feathers puffed out as though she knew something was wrong. Coaxing her onto his arm, Harry stroked her feathers and explained what was going on. After a slightly disgruntled look at him, she finally gave a hoot that seemed to show she understood then nibbled his fingers in an affectionate way before he passed her off to the elf who promised to take good care of her.
Looking around the room, he quickly stuffed everything in his trunk, though he was certain an elf would double check to ensure he missed nothing, then made sure all the important things were there before taking back off to meet Lucius.
Lucius had grabbed the books and sent his message to Severus to get back as soon as he could so he was ready to go. Looking at the pale, slightly shaking Harry, he had the young man grab his arm. “Have you done a side-along Apparation before, Harry?” When he saw him shake his head, Lucius told him, “Keep your eyes closed until we stop, no matter what. It's going to be disorienting and not feel the best, probably make you slightly nauseated since you haven't experienced it before but it's the only way to do this so I can get you through the wards.” When he saw the young man nod, Lucius gave a nod then they were off.
When they finally made it to Avalon Manor, Harry was sure that his stomach was turning inside out and he was going to puke all over. Legs shaking, he flopped into the nearest chair he could find, sucking in deep breaths. That hadn't been what he expected from that mode of travel at all. And he thought Portkeys were bad! Shutting his eyes, he lowered his head slightly, waiting for the disorientation and sick feeling to pass.
Knowing there was now a lot to accomplish, Lucius first had one of the elves bring all the boxes of spare wands that had been collected by the family over the years and put them on the table in front of the young man. “Go through those. You'll find one that feels 'right' somewhere in there. You can use that until we get you a new one. While you do that, I have someone to contact. Alright?”
Nodding, pleased that Lucius was keeping his word, Harry leaned back and began to pick up wands from the first box he saw, testing them.
Seeing that the young man was now busy, Lucius hurried into the room that had a heavily warded Floo. It was not one that was hooked to the normal Floo network but only worked between various Malfoy homes. After tossing power into it, he knelt down in front of it then called out the name of the place Narcissa was staying at. Within a minute, alerted by the elf that keeps an eye on the Floo, his wife's head appeared in the fire. With a sigh, Lucius said, “Narcissa, you and Draco need to leave tonight. As fast as you can, in fact. Something's happened and, though I'm not sure it could cause issues, it's better to be cautious than take a chance.”
Concerned look on her face, Narcissa nodded then said, “We'll be gone from here in an hour. The elves can move everything from there. Do I want to ask what happened or where you are?”
Shaking his head, Lucius sighed, “It's best you don't know, Narcissa. That way...” He stopped there, knowing she would catch on. Looking down, he then told her, softly, “This isn't the way I wanted to say goodbye, Narcissa. I planned to come and see the two of you before you left. Now, though, it's best I don't.”
Face softening, Lucius' wife said, tone soft, “I know, Lucius. If it's to keep us safe, I understand. So will Draco. He may be mad at first but, as things drag on, he'll understand. Don't fret.”
“I will miss you, Narcissa. Give Draco my best and ensure that the both of you are safe.” This was hard on Lucius. By nature, he wasn't a man that showed emotions but this was a final goodbye and it was hard. He probably wouldn't see either of them until long after the war ended when it was certain they would be safe in the aftermath.
Tearing up slightly, Narcissa nodded then said, tone soft, voice slightly uneven, “I will miss you as well, Lucius. I'll pass along your love to Draco. You make sure you take care of yourself. Never forget, I love you, Lucius.”
“And I you, Narcissa,” Lucius told her back tone slightly broken. “You need to go. This may turn out to be nothing but...”
“We will now, don't worry. Make sure you stay safe.” With that, Narcissa cut off the connection.
Looking at the fire that was now its normal color, Lucius' chest felt heavy. The next time he would talk to Narcissa, she would no longer be his wife. Though he knew this was something that was for the best and to keep the two of them safe, it didn't make it hurt less. Right now, though, he had other things to deal with of a more important nature. When things settled down and he was alone that night, he would deal with the ramifications of the rest. Now, well, there was much to be done.
Standing up, he took a minute to make sure he was composed and his robe smoothed down, then he went out to start arrangements for where everyone was asleep, making sure that everything that was needed was brought over, getting things moved from Malfoy Manor, as well as locking that down, the wards, and a myriad of other issues. Personal things were just going to have to wait.
Severus was sitting in an Order meeting, grinding his teeth and feeling a migraine starting to form. He didn't want to be there and nothing that was being said seemed to need his presence but Dumbledore wanted him there for some reason. The only reason for it he could figure out was the headmaster had set up a personal meeting between the two later in the week, saying he wanted to talk. The rest, so far, was just a cluster about ways to try to figure out where Potter was. From what he was seeing, no viable solution that might stand a chance to work had been brought up. Hell, even he, if he didn't know what was going on, saw a way to track the brat beyond what they had done. Beyond that, everyone did seem worried to death.
Normally, there would be some compassion for the beings there, especially the Weasleys, because of how they saw Potter, but at this time all he wanted to do was sneer at the lot of them then call them hypocrites. The only one, and it galled him to admit it, that he might buy it from was Black. Though following what the headmaster wanted, the man did seem to care for Potter enough as well as having a personality as such that if it came down to what was best for Potter and what the headmaster wanted, Potter would probably come out on top of the war. At this point, though, that was it for those kinds of things. None of the beings seated around the table was willing to put what was best for Potter before what Dumbledore wanted. That was enough to make him snarl and want to start throwing hexes. He didn't, but he wanted to.
Just as he was hoping things were going to break up in the next hour or so, then he could take a break before he went to see the Dark Lord, Severus was stunned to feel the small charm that he kept in a pocket heat up. That was a signal from Lucius that he had sent him a Patronus. As, most of the time, he was in a meeting with the Order or the Dark Lord when he left where they were staying, it wasn’t wise to send one of those direct, in case someone else saw it so they had come up with this. As Lucius knew what his itinerary for the day was as they had talked about it before he left, that left him with a trepidatious feeling he couldn't shake. For his co-conspirator to send him a message at this time meant something dire had happened.
Keeping his shields up and his normal poker face, Severus waited for a small lull in the conversation to excuse himself to go tend to personal needs. Finding the bathroom, he warded it heavily. As this was normal for him, if someone followed, they wouldn't think anything of it. After ensuring it was soundproofed the best he could get it, he pulled the charm out then tapped it with his wand. Instantly, Lucius' cobra appeared then began to speak, “Severus, I need you to come back soonest. Something drastic has happened and we are moving as I send this. One of the elves will meet you there with a note from me.” After that, the cobra vanished, leaving Severus stunned.
Standing there, staring down at the charm, Severus' mind was all over the place. Though not much detail was given, something he knew was done on purpose in case things were overheard, there was enough there to make his gut clench and mind go bounding all over. For Lucius to be moving them, whatever happened had to be big. That meant he had to get back there as fast as possible. He was also worried about what might be happening. The Order wasn't involved, that he knew but there was the Ministry and Dark Lord to consider as well when it came to that. If either of them had a hand in this, it was bad news.
Standing there, he came up with the most plausible excuse he could muster then dropped his wards and strode out of the washroom with a purpose. Just before stepping back into the room where the meeting was being held, he clutched onto his arm the way he would if he were summoned and put a grim look on his face, hoping it was the same kind that was normally there when such things happened. Stepping back in, he said Dumbledore's name. When the old man looked at him then glanced down, a worried look on his face when he saw him clutching at his arm, Severus said, “I have to go.”
Looking grave, Dumbledore nodded then said, as always, “Be careful, Severus. If anything happens I need to know about, let me know.”
“I will, headmaster,” Severus said with a nod then hurried out of the house. Hurrying to the park across the street, he Apparated away, worried what he would find when he got there.
As Lucius had said, the elf that was in charge of the house was waiting for him when he got there with a note. Taking it quickly, he tore it open then began to read. With every sentence, his face grew more grave. Finishing it up, he then incinerated it with a wave of his wand. Looking down at the elf that was waiting for him, he said, “Let me get the cauldrons and ingredients ready to transport then you can take me.”
The old elf bowed and gave an affirmative response then Severus hurried off, mind all over the place about this, tension evident in his shoulders.
After getting everything ready and shrunk, he went outside. Sure enough, Lucius' suspicions were correct and the Dementors were still there. Casting his Patronus, they didn't seem interested by it, remaining where the fading stag was still tromping back and forth. That he didn't like but he could now understand why Lucius had chosen to leave. It was a wise decision on his friend's part.
Stepping back inside, he went to the elf and said, “I'm ready. Take me there then finish up getting everything out of here.”
Nodding to the man in black, the elf took his hand then, with a soft crack, the two of them vanished.
Sorry about the delay. This is the third draft of this chapter. The other two I didn't like so it's been rewritten twice. Trying to update faster but 'life happens'. Hopefully, my busy few weeks are over and I can go back to normal.
