McGonagall decided to hold a meeting for the Heads of Houses, though for some strange reason she asked that Slughorn be summoned to represent Slytherin. Then she had Harry accompany her to the Headmaster’s office, which Harry supposed was her office now since she’d been Deputy Headmistress.
“I know this is a difficult subject,” she began, “but I must ask you what you were doing with Dumbledore outside the castle.”
“I can’t tell you,” Harry said quietly, his gaze lowered to his feet. “I was supposed to keep it a secret.”
McGonagall seemed a little flustered by his response. “I understand you probably still feel loyal to him, but I really must know.”
“No, you don’t understand. It was really important, but he said I had to do it.” He lifted his gaze to look at her. “It’s probably better for everyone if I keep that secret.”
Before Harry could say any more, the door opened and the other Heads of Houses entered. “This is horrible, horrible news,” Slughorn shook his head. “But why was I called to represent Slytherin House? Did something happen to Severus as well?”
“Sort of,” McGonagall answered. “I sent him back to his room to rest. He really shouldn’t have left it to begin with. I know he didn’t want to tell anyone, but you’ll all find out sooner or later anyway. He’s four months pregnant.”
Harry’s knees gave out when he heard the news and he tumbled to the floor. Professor Sprout, who was standing nearest to him, helped him back to his feet. “Are you all right?” she asked.
Harry turned to McGonagall, barely believing what he’d just heard. “That… that can happen?”
“Yes, Harry,” she nodded. “It’s rare, but when two wizards enter into a magical bond, it’s been known to happen.”
“That’s wonderful news!” Slughorn smiled. “I didn’t know he was married.”
“I don’t think anyone knew,” McGonagall said. “Professor Dumbledore told me Severus was pregnant, but he never told me who the father was. I suppose it isn’t really any of our business. I just hope he’s all right.”
Harry had a pretty good idea of who the father was. “Professor, can I go now?” he asked.
“Of course, Harry,” McGonagall nodded.
Harry hurried out and went straight to Severus’ room, pounding on the door like a mad man. “You—you bastard!” he cried as soon as the door was opened.
“Harry, what’s wrong?” Severus asked, a little worried.
Harry forced his way into the room, not sure whether to laugh or cry. “You were so angry about a little lie! You hypocritical—” He was so angry his mind could barely form the right words. “I didn’t hide a baby from you.”
“Oh, that . . . .” Severus sighed. “Harry, there’s a major difference between what you did and what I did. You wanted to be selfish and have a little secret of your very own. I was trying to protect you.”
“Protect me?” Harry was shouting now. “When were you going to tell me? Were you going to wait until it graduated from school?”
“Harry, it’s not that simple. I was going to tell you a few days after I found out, but then you finally acquired that damned memory from Horace. You were so happy when you came to see me that night. I couldn’t ruin it by making you worry about becoming a father. Then you were finally able to have some peace and live the life of a normal sixteen-year-old boy. Did you really want me to take that away from you, especially when I knew what was coming? Then you attacked Draco and lied to my face. Forgive me for having doubts.”
Harry sank down onto the couch, trying to process everything. “So you kept it all to yourself. How did Dumbledore find out?”
Severus sat down beside him. “He figured it out. I was getting ill randomly throughout the day and having wild mood swings, which I’m sure you noticed. Harry, I was going to tell you, it just never seemed to be a good time. I don’t want you to worry. I’m not going to force any responsibility on you.”
“You expect me to just walk away?”
Severus laughed and shook his head. “I know you better than that. What I mean is I don’t want you to feel like you have to do anything. You still have a task to do, and I want you to do it. After that, we’ll see, though I’d prefer it if you finished school.”
Harry nodded. “I think I understand what you mean. I’m still a little mad at you for keeping something like this from me for so long. And you really shouldn’t have gone up to that tower tonight. You were hurt.”
“It would have been worse if I hadn’t. My bond with you might have shielded me from the vow, but I’m fairly certain it would have killed the child. It wasn’t a risk I was willing to take. I’m beginning to grow rather fond of the little parasite.”
Harry frowned. “It’s a baby.”
“Yes, and it’s been sucking up all of my energy.”
Harry shook his head. “May I?” he asked, cautiously reaching out to touch Severus’ belly. There wasn’t much of a bump there yet. “Do you know what it is?”
“It’s a baby. I thought we’d just established that.”
“I know that! I mean, is it a boy or a girl?”
“I don’t know. We’ll have to wait until it’s born.”
Harry paused a moment. “How is that going to happen, exactly?”
“There will be a birth canal when the time comes. Until then, I’ll remain just as I am.”
“Oh. That’ll be interesting. Severus, I don’t think I’m going to be able to sleep tonight. Can I stay here with you? I’ll send a message to Ron and Hermione to let them know where I am.”
“Mimi!” Severus called out. She appeared in a flash, big tears falling down her tiny cheeks. The news must have spread to the house elves. “Go to Gryffindor Tower and tell Ron and/or Hermione that Harry is staying with me tonight,” he ordered. “And make sure no one else overhears you.”
McGonagall and the other Heads of House decided to keep the school open until after Dumbledore’s funeral. After that the school’s fate would rest in the Governors’ hands. All lessons and exams were cancelled, which left the next few days free.
Harry decided to move his things into Severus’ room so he wouldn’t have to face anyone. He found the elder wizard’s presence very comforting. The baby was a welcome distraction, as well. Harry woke one morning and moved to kiss Severus’ rounded belly. “This is exactly what I was trying to avoid,” Severus grumbled.
Harry shrugged. “You and I both know you’re going to put up with it.”
Severus glared at Harry as he got out of bed. “You’re probably right. I’m a predictable masochist.”
Harry grinned up at him from the bed. “You’re my predictable masochist. That’s why I know you’ll do what I’m gonna ask you to do.”
“It’s official; you’re your father.”
Harry rolled his eyes at the comment. “I want you to have lunch with me and my friends today. We’ll pick a nice spot away from everyone. I want them to get to know the Severus Snape my father and I both fell in love with.”
Severus sighed as he put on his robe. “Is this absolutely necessary?”
“Yes. I keep trying to explain to them that you’re a different person under that outer shell, but they still think I’m bonkers. Severus, they’re my friends, and you’re—well, I don’t know what you are exactly except that you’re important to me.”
“Fine,” Severus scowled. “But I make no promises. Now I really must go tend to Bill. The salve is finally ready.”
Harry curled up and stayed in bed a little while longer before going to breakfast. There wasn’t much left, but he didn’t have much of an appetite lately anyway. Ron and Hermione were waiting for him, and he told them about his plans for later. Hermione agreed to it, and she had to kick Ron under the table to get him to reluctantly go along with it.
Harry spent half the morning picking the perfect spot, until he settled on a shady patch of grass by the lake. He called for Mimi and had her pack their lunch and send a message to Severus to tell him where to meet them.
“I don’t know why you insisted on this either,” Ron complained. “I mean, you’re too young to be a dad anyway.”
Harry let out an exasperated sigh and leaned back against a tree trunk. “Your attitude is exactly why I insisted on it.”
A small smile appeared on Harry’s face when he saw Severus approaching. The look on Severus’ face reminded Harry of a cat that was about to be given a bath. He couldn’t help but let out a little chuckle at that image.
“I’m so glad you find this funny,” Severus grumbled and lowered himself into a seated position on the ground.
Harry leaned over to kiss him tenderly, causing Ron to gag. “How’s Bill,” Harry asked, trying to get the conversation going.
“He seems to be doing better,” Severus answered. “I’ll have to remove the bandages after dinner, but I’m confident he’ll at least look like his old self. Oh, Hermione, I was wondering something. What is your sudden interest in my mother?”
“Eileen Prince is your mother?” Hermione looked a little surprised.
“She was, yes.”
“Oh. Well, before we knew you were the Half-Blood Prince I was looking into it, and I thought maybe . . . .”
“I see. You were looking up witches and wizards with the last name of Prince. That was actually very clever of you. However, if you thought the book belonged to my mother—well, she was a pureblood. I’m the half-blood since my father was a Muggle.”
“I see the family resemblance,” Ron muttered.
“Was she good in Potions?” Hermione asked.
“She did reasonably well, I think. I wouldn’t really know. My father didn’t like magic much. He didn’t like anything.”
“Everything makes so much more sense now,” Ron commented, and was immediately slapped on the shoulder by Hermione.
“Stop it, Ronald!” she snapped. “You’re the only one not making any effort here.”
Severus curled up with his head against his knees, breathing heavily. “Severus, are you all right?” Harry asked, a little worried.
“What in the hell am I doing?” Severus said, a crack in his voice.
Harry put a hand on his shoulder. “Just ignore Ron. He’s being a prig.” Harry glared at the redhead.
“It’s not that.” Severus sounded like he was crying now. “How did I get myself into this situation? You’re underage, and I can’t be a parent!”
Harry rubbed his back to try and calm him. “I helped, remember? I’m sure everything will be fine. If you had bad parents, well, then you know what not to do. I didn’t exactly have shining examples, either.”
“That’s true.” Severus seemed to calm down a little.
Harry handed him a sandwich. “Here. You might feel better after you eat something. I don’t think you had breakfast.” Severus took the sandwich and nibbled on it.
“What are you going to do now?” Hermione asked, changing the subject.
“I was hoping Harry would let me stay at Grimmauld Place. I can’t serve Voldemort anymore. In a few months I’ll barely be able to walk, but the reason won’t matter.”
“Of course you can stay there,” Harry answered. “And I want to stay with you.”
Severus shook his head. “You have to go back to your aunt and uncle’s until you’re seventeen. That’s only about a month away, and you won’t miss much.”
Harry frowned. “Will you at least write to me?”
“I think I can manage that. You know, I don’t have to report to anyone anymore, and it feels strange. I’ve always had a master of some sort pulling the strings.”
“I’ll be your master,” Harry grinned.
Severus raised an eyebrow. “You can try, but I don’t think you’re the type. You don’t have a selfish bone in your body; making me come here today is about as sadistic as you get.”
Harry wasn’t sure if he was being complimented or insulted. “Was my dad the dominant type?”
Severus smiled softly. “Oh, yes. That man had me wrapped around his little finger and he knew it. Come to think of it, he had pretty much everyone wrapped around his little finger. Watching him with Dumbledore, some days it was hard to tell who was pulling which strings.”
Harry pulled his legs up to his chest and rested his chin on his knees. “I bet you miss him.”
“I do.” Severus nodded. “But don’t you start that again. You’re just as smart as he was, you just use your smarts differently. I still can’t believe some of the messes you three caused and then somehow got yourselves out of.”
Hermione chuckled. “That’s true, Harry. Life with you is never boring.”
Severus reached to take Harry’s hand. “I have confidence in you. You’re young yet, and if you ask me, up until this year you haven’t been trained very well in defensive and combative magic.”
Harry gave Severus’ hand a little squeeze. “I don’t have very long to learn everything I need to. Who’s going to teach me?”
“I will. I am a teacher after all. Or I was . . . .”
“You were?” Harry looked a little confused.
“I might as well tell you now. Dumbledore decided to name me as his successor. It was all part of his grand plan. I was supposed to keep the school safe while making Voldemort think he had control. He’s going to want it badly. But I’m not going to be able to serve as anything except a bump on a log come September.”
“What are you going to do?” Hermione asked.
“I’ve spoken with Professor McGonagall about it. I’m going to be sworn in as Headmaster as planned, but she’ll have to hold down the fort while I sit around and grow larger and more useless.”
“You’re not useless.” Harry shot him a glare. “Being someone’s mother is anything but useless.”
“Still . . . .” Severus sighed. “We have to come up with a whole new plan.”
Harry, Hermione, and Severus sat there the rest of the afternoon talking about their new plan, among other things. Harry was happy that Hermione was at least willing to give Severus a chance. Ron just sat there looking miserable; he still wasn’t willing to admit Severus was anything less than a slimy git who was taking advantage of Harry.
On the morning of the funeral Harry delayed getting out of bed as long as possible. Severus emerged from the bathroom and Harry watched as his completely nude companion pulled a royal purple robe out of his wardrobe. “Wow, something that’s not black,” Harry teased.
Severus shot him a glare. “I like black. While it would normally be appropriate for a funeral, something tells me this would be better. I have something for you to wear, too.” He pulled a box off the top shelf and handed it to Harry.
“Dad’s?” Harry guessed. He pulled the midnight blue suede robe from the box and ran his fingers over the material. “It’s so soft.”
“It’s hand-tailored. Hopefully it fits you. He always did like his robes to be rather form-fitting.”
Harry slipped into it, turning around so Severus could zip it up for him. The inside lining was a soft satin, and it hugged his body perfectly. The neck was a V shape and laced with satin ribbon. Severus put a black leather belt around Harry’s waist and fastened it with a simple silver belt buckle. Then he fastened a black satin cape to the shoulders. Harry stared at himself in the mirror. “I look like a whole different person.”
“You’re gorgeous.” Severus gave him a soft smile. “Take good care of it. It’s as expensive as it looks.” Severus slipped into his purple robe with intricate silver embroidery around the sleeves and hem. He had to use a spell so it would fit over his expanding stomach. He sighed as he looked in the mirror. “I suppose it’ll do.”
“You’ll have to start wearing colors more often,” Harry commented. “You look good.” He glanced at the clock. “It’s nearly time. I’ve never been to a funeral before. What exactly is going to happen?”
“Mostly just people saying nice stuff about him,” Severus answered.
“Oh.” Harry nodded and followed Severus out to the grounds. Dozens of people were milling about a little area by the lake where chairs had been set up. Harry went to find his friends.
Hermione’s eyes went wide at the sight of him. “Oh, Harry, wow! You look so handsome in that. Where’d you get it?”
“I guess it used to be my dad’s.” Harry shrugged. “It is nice, isn’t it? I’m almost afraid to move in it. I’ve never had anything this nice before.”
Ron frowned at him but didn’t say anything. They found three seats together toward the back. Harry hated it when his best friend acted jealous. His mind flashed back to their fourth year and that hideous second-hand robe Ron had had to wear to the Yule Ball. Harry couldn’t help that his parents had money, any more than Ron could help coming from a poor family; though Ron was talented at making him feel guilty.
Harry looked around at all the other witches and wizards. Some he recognized, like Tom from the Leaky Cauldron, but most of them were complete strangers. The ceremony started and all eyes turned to Hagrid, who was carrying Dumbledore’s body up to a stone slab in front of the crowd. He laid the former Headmaster down before returning to the back to stand beside his half-brother, Grawp.
An older wizard in a black robe got up to speak, commenting on Dumbledore’s life. It was then that Harry realized how little he’d known about the man he’d considered a grandfather figure. A single tear slid down his cheek as an empty feeling filled the pit of his stomach.
Then other people got up to say a few words. Severus stood after McGonagall had finished speaking. “I spent all night trying to figure out what I was going to say,” he addressed the crowd. “The sun was up when I finally figured it out. I know he badly wanted me to say this while he was still alive, but better late than never, I suppose.” He turned toward Dumbledore’s body. “Albus, I know I used to look at you like you’d lost your mind when you talked about how love was the most powerful force on earth. I see a few people here are thinking the same thing I used to think. However, I finally admit that you were right. You brought two very special people into my life. My love for them has turned me into a raving lunatic. I’ve done things for them no sane person would even dream of. There’s no other explanation for it.”
He turned to face the crowd again. “There, I said it out loud. And I’m sure if he heard me from wherever he is, he has a very smug grin on his face. He was a very smart man, and a great Headmaster. It’s not going to be easy to take his place, but hopefully I won’t let him down.”
Severus took his seat in the front row. As soon as he was seated flames erupted from the stone slab and engulfed Dumbledore’s body. When the smoke cleared a white marble tomb stood in front of them. The service was over, and people got out of their seats to mingle again.
The crowd began to move into the Great Hall where lunch was being served. After that it would be time for the students who were left to head down to the train and go home. Harry didn’t want to leave his friends or Severus, but he knew he had to. His relatives had to be warned about the danger they would soon face.
Severus approached Remus and Tonks. “Hello, Severus.” Remus greeted him with a small smile. “That was very nice, what you said.”
“It’s the truth. Listen, I need to ask a favor.”
“Oh?” Remus perked up a little. “What is it?”
“Because of current circumstances I need to move into where Black was staying. Harry gave me permission to hide out there for a while. I’ll have to go back to my home and get a few things first, however. I was wondering if the two of you would come with me in case—you know—”
“I see.” Remus nodded and looked to Harry with a quizzical expression. “I suppose we could. Is the father moving in with you?”
“I want to,” Harry said with a frown, “but he won’t let me.”
Realization dawned on Remus and he turned to Severus. “A student, Severus? I can’t believe what I’m hearing! How could you do this to him?”
“Stop it!” Harry said sharply. “If you’re going to blame someone, blame me. I found out about him and my dad. They did something to protect me when I was a baby. The more I found out, the more I saw Severus as a completely different person. The first time I kissed him he pushed me away and said everything you’re probably thinking, but I kept insisting.”
“Is this true?” Remus asked Severus.
Severus nodded. “Harry was bound to me so he would be safe. It was a drastic step, but it did keep him alive. No one but me was ever supposed to know. As it turns out, he inherited James’ power of persuasion.”
Remus raised an eyebrow. “Did he?” He studied Harry for a moment. “All right, I won’t preach. I will go with you to collect your things. I think you’re both crazy, but in times like these I guess we’re all entitled to be a little crazy.”
“Thanks, Remus.” Harry hugged him.
