Authors Note: In my story when Buffy jumped into the portal at the end of the episode of "The Gift" she did die, but Dawn also faded away afterwards so Dawn is not in this story at all. Please note that while the BTVS seasons have been years the ATS seasons have been six months, so while it is after "The Gift" for the BTVS crew for the ATS crew it is set late season 4. With ATS, however, I'm going to ignore the whole Connor/Cordelia fling and Jasmine story line. The Beast was vanquished and Faith then went to Sunnydale to help out, although the demon/vampire population has been dwindling over the hellmouth lately. If you want to know why I am doing this there are two reasons, one I like Wesley at that stage and two I wanted Faith in the story line, there are other reasons, but that would give away some of the story so you'll have to wait for those.
Also, I just want to state for the record that even though I might be bashing some characters in this story I actually do like them in the books, movies and TV shows. That being said I do need villains and some just work better for that than others.
Last part of this note is to thank everyone who has reviewed and/or recommended this story. I do appreciate you taking the time to do this and letting me know what you think of the story to date.
Now back to your regular scheduled update.
Xander said goodbye to Spike and began the walk home to his apartment. It wasn't quite sunrise yet, but he knew by the time he got home that the sun would be out. Of course, on the way home, he'd have to stop for breakfast and he'd seek out any other way to delay going back to the apartment if possible. He knew he was doing it; there was nothing subconscious about his decision to try to get home as close to when Anya left for work as possible. He'd been trying to avoid her and the arguments they'd been having for the last few months; ever since Buffy had thrown herself into the portal and died. Anya didn't think he should be patrolling anymore. She'd argue that he wasn't a slayer or even a witch. That he wasn't capable of fighting and he'd get hurt. She made it quite clear in her vocal demands that he was of no use except to give her orgasms and to work to give her money; anything that interrupted either of those two things was not to be tolerated. She'd even made accusations of him trying to impress Faith since according to her he had only gotten involved with slaying because he wanted to impress Buffy. It had gotten so bad that even on nights when he'd finished patrol early he'd been going back to Spike's mausoleum apartment to talk and sometimes-even sleep for a few hours.
He was really regretting having asked Anya to marry him. The only thing he was grateful for was the fact that she hadn't mentioned it since nor had she put on the ring for everyone else to see. As he stopped to get his usual two donuts and a coffee, he glanced over to where his apartment was. He knew Anya was up and getting ready to go to the Magic Box. He sighed knowing there was nothing else he could do at this point to avoid going home. He didn't have to go to work today so he should be able to catch up on his sleep, which he knew that he did need. Perhaps he could make it into bed before Anya started in on him. Where was a demon when he wanted one? But, no there was nothing to hinder his progress as he dragged his feet over to the apartment taking the stairs instead of the elevator; it only added a few minutes, but every bit counted at this point. Opening the door, he barely got it shut before Anya was out of the bedroom and glaring at him.
"Do you have any idea what time it is Xander? You need to get home earlier than this. Actually you shouldn't be going out at all," Anya stated as she reached over to get her purse. "There is no reason for you to deal with all that is out there. Faith is the slayer, not you. She can do it, but even if she needs help she has Giles and Spike to help her, she doesn't need you. What are you going to do anyway? Throw a hammer at a demon? Like that would do any good. We can't afford you getting hurt or ending up in the hospital again since neither of us has insurance. I wanted you here last night. I really needed an orgasm or two but no, you weren't here so I had to take care of it myself. It's just not as satisfying."
"Anya I've told you I cannot let others in this town die if I can stop it," Xander said softly knowing that it wouldn't matter. He headed into the kitchen to put his donuts and coffee down on the table. He'd argued in the past that he'd been fighting for years and did know what he was doing, that he didn't go out alone, and that it was something he felt he needed to do. Yes he patrolled more then he used to, but he went out with Spike each time. It didn't seem to matter what he said, she wouldn't hear it anyway and would just continue to berate him.
"Are you listening to me Xander Harris?" Anya yelled at him, but then didn't wait for an answer. "Did you patrol with Faith last night? Is that why you are late?" She knew Faith had been his first lover. She couldn't help but wonder if he didn't always compare the dark slayer to her. "You are just doing this to try and impress her aren't you? You're a fool Xander. I should have known you could never be faithful. Hello, how did I end up here after all if it weren't for you," she sneered at him.
"Faith and I are friends, that's all," Xander told her. He glared at her wondering how many times she was going to bring up the incident that had happened between Cordelia, Willow and him that caused Cordelia to make her wish with Anyanka. "I was a teenager back then. I made a mistake, sue me," he stated. He was tired and getting angry. He really wasn't sure how much more he could take of her attitude.
"I have to get to work. One of us has to be able to pay the bills. If you hadn't missed those three days last month due to those injuries you got from that fyral demon you would have gotten that promotion and maybe we could have afforded some new things," Anya stated with disgust. "Instead I have to work twelve hours a day so that I can buy the things I want. I won't stand for it anymore Xander. You have to make a choice, patrolling or me. Which will it be?" she demanded. She'd had enough and figured it was time for the ultimatum; after all, she had to protect Xander from himself. She was not going to let him continue to be stuck at a low-level job when she knew he could run the company if he wanted. He just needed her to push him. She'd used ultimatums in the past and he'd always caved so she was sure he would do so now.
Xander stood there and thought for a moment before answering. He had been offered the promotion, however, it had meant moving to Los Angeles, which he really didn't want to do. He didn't want to admit that he'd miss the nightly talks he had with Spike. The vampire seemed to understand him and his problems with Anya. He hadn't told Anya he'd turned it down or why. He just let her assume he didn't get it. He was tired though of her constantly throwing it in his face. He was tired of her bringing up her work hours; she would work the same number of hours no matter what. He was also tired of her nagging about money, about him patrolling, her jealousy of any time he spent with Faith, and just about everything actually. "Patrolling," He snapped at her. He downed the last of his coffee and moved past her, ignoring her look of shock. "I'm going to bed and tonight I will be going out on patrol. You do what you have to do."
"Xander Harris don't you walk away from me," Anya screeched as he headed for the bedroom. Before she could say anything else, the bedroom door slammed shut in her face. She growled and stormed out of the apartment. She'd get him around to seeing things here way. She wasn't sure how yet, but she would.
~~~~~~~~~
Xander hadn't relaxed until he heard Anya leave. Once she had, he'd collapsed on the bed planning to get several hours of sleep. Plans didn't go that way; they never seemed to go the way he wanted lately. He woke up suddenly after only two hours. He looked around not seeing anything that would have caused him to wake up, but he had a feeling he had to get up. He checked out the apartment, but seeing nothing wrong, he went to get a shower. His thoughts went back to Anya's ultimatum. He knew sooner or later she'd give one since she had in the past about minor things. Before, he'd always given into her not this time though. He'd had enough. He deserved better. Loosing Buffy and Dawn had taught him one thing; he didn't want to waste his life. He wanted it to mean something like theirs had and he'd promised them both at the funeral he would find a way to enjoy life again. He finished his shower and threw on some jeans and a t-shirt before heading for the kitchen. He'd gotten out a can of coke and was looking at the donuts he'd bought earlier when there was a knock on the door. He frowned as he tried to figure out who would be there to see him. Willow and Tara were on some Wiccan retreat and wouldn't be back for another month and Giles would be at the Magic Box. This time of day Spike and Faith would be sleeping and he knew Anya wouldn't knock. That was the extent of his friends so who was visiting? Going to the door, he looked out through the peephole and frowned. He didn't recognize any of the men standing there, but the one did rather remind him of Spike. Opening the door, he leaned against it slightly. "May I help you?"
Harry was more nervous then he wanted to admit. They had gotten up early that morning to head to Diagon Alley. Harry had bought a fair amount clothes of his own under Draco's advisement so that he got fashionable things; most of it all sent to Grimmauld Place to await his return. He'd also gone to an eye healer who had been able to give him a potion that healed his eyes. Well it healed them at least until he was a hundred and fifty and then he would more than likely need reading glasses. That was something he could live with. After they had finished all of that, they had gone to Gringotts. Harry had the sense to get some money transferred into American funds and was given the equivalent of a credit card that would work at most muggle stores. Once they had everything set, they had portkeyed into Sunnydale forgetting about the time difference. It was far too early to contact Alexander so instead they had gone to a restaurant that was open twenty-four hours and had their first experience in American food. Some of the things were very similar just called different things while some of the food was very different with the same name to what they were used to. Severus complained about the tea and Harry had to admit it was not as good as they were used to. At first, they had discussed the events of the night before and the meeting with Remus, the twins, Arthur Weasley and even Tonks had shown up as well for it. They had discussed the evidence they had found to date and some of the theories they had. Tempers had flared and if Dumbledore had been there at the time he might not have lived to ever face a trial for his actions. The evidence they had already wasn't enough; they needed more since Dumbledore was so good at manipulating others. The rest of the evening had been spent discussing how to find more evidence. They started on that discussion again to no avail. They couldn't think of anywhere else at this point to look so they moved on to discussing different ways of approaching Alexander. Some of the ways they had come up with were very outlandish and only made them laugh. Now, as the man stood there looking at them, all the ideas they'd come up with flew out of Harry's head except for the more outlandish ones and those he knew wouldn't work. "Hello. We are looking for Alexander Harris. Are you him?" he asked even though he knew that this was him since he'd seen pictures in the file.
The accent surprised him. The only English people he knew worked for the Council, but these guys didn't look like they would be with them. Okay, maybe the pale guy in the back might work for them, but he looked too much like a vampire in Xander's opinion for that to be the case. "Yeah I am," he said his curiosity growing as to why they were looking for him. "What is it you want?"
"May we come in?" Draco asked. "We need to discuss something with you and it is best done in private." He knew he probably should have let Harry handle it, which was what they'd decided to do, but he could tell his friend was nervous so he'd wanted to help.
Xander stood back and opened the door wider letting them come in if they could. Yeah it was daylight, but with the sewer systems in the town he knew vampires could get anywhere they wanted to so he wasn't going to take any chances. Once they all walked in, he shut the door. "Have a seat. If you don't mind me asking, who are you and what did you want to discuss?"
"My name is Harry Potter, this is Draco Malfoy and this gentleman is Severus Snape," Harry said giving the introductions as they took the offered seats. Harry noticed that Alexander didn't seem to recognize any of their names so he wasn't sure if that made things easier or harder for them. "This is going to sound a bit strange but I was asked to contact you by my godfather, Sirius Black."
"Never heard of the man," Xander said as he sat down. He was really curious now. He didn't recognize any of the names, but the more he looked at the man named Malfoy the more he thought he looked like Spike or what Spike might have looked like as a teenager. He was racking his brains trying to think why an Englishman would want to contact him and nothing was coming to mind. He didn't owe anybody any money, no one owed him any money, and it wasn't as if he was some expert on anything that would be sought out for his knowledge. He rubbed the back of his neck as he continued to look at them. "Why did he want you to contact me?"
"Well...all right, not sure if there is an easy way to explain this," Harry told him. "Twenty years ago Sirius had a child..."
"And what? You think I'm his son?" Xander asked cutting Harry off. This was not something that had even popped into his head as a possibility as to why they were there. As much as he would love to believe that Tony Harris wasn't his father he'd had no indication over the years that his mother had been involved with someone other than that creep. "I think my mom would have mentioned this Sirius Black before now if they had been involved."
"Actually yes we do think you are his son, but he wasn't involved with your mother. You see Sirius' son was kidnapped," Harry explained. "Two weeks after he was born Sirius' son disappeared. Many believed his cousin Bellatrix Lestrange was involved in it." He stopped with the explanation when he saw some recognition in Alexander's face. "You know that name?" he asked.
"That's my mother's maiden name," Xander said as he heard it. He also remembered seeing several papers when he was younger with the name Bellatrix on it, but his mother had snatched the papers away before he could read any of them except the name.
"Jessica is Bellatrix' sister-in-law," Draco explained trying to be helpful. He glanced over at Severus who seemed to be very quiet. The man was sitting in the one chair instead of the couch so was at an angle to Alexander and Draco noticed Severus seemed to be discretely scanning him.
"So she kidnapped me and my mother helped or knew," Xander said as he stood up and began pacing as he started to get a bit angry. "I can't believe she did that. Why?" he asked as he turned and looked at them. Considering how his parents had treated him over the years Xander found it difficult to believe they had wanted children. None of this made any sense to him.
"We aren't sure. Bellatrix did hate Sirius, but we don't know if that is why she did it. She's in Azkaban right now and even before going there her sanity was questionable even on a good day," Harry explained. He watched Xander pacing and could tell he was getting angry which he couldn't blame him.
Xander was trying to take all this information in. The thought that he really did have other parents out there was a lot to adjust to. He remembered how Willow and he used to imagine they were adopted, but he'd never thought he'd been kidnapped. "Wait, why are you contacting me and not him? Why isn't he...he's dead isn't he?" he asked as the information suddenly clicked in his head.
"Several months ago there was a battle at the Department of Mysteries. Bellatrix hit Sirius with a curse and he fell backwards into The Veil. No one really knows what The Veil is, however once something goes in there.." Harry broke off as he tried not to let his emotions get the best of him. Talking about that fateful day still tore at his heart.
"A curse..you're talking about magic? This Bellatrix is a witch?" Xander anger grew even more at the thought of magic being used to kill someone. He didn't know what the veil was, but he knew about magic and how dangerous it could be.
"Yes she is and Sirius was a wizard," Draco stated knowing that Harry needed a minute to collect himself. "We are wizards as well, so are you for that matter." He wondered how the Alexander was going to take that information. The goblins had been right in him knowing about magic at least, but seeing the disbelief on his face now Draco could tell he obviously doubted the claim that he was a wizard.
"Me? No way," Xander said moving to sit down once more. Now he was really thinking they had the wrong person. So much for thinking he wasn't related to Tony Harris. He should have known it was too good to be true. He knew there was no way he was a wizard. "Magic and I are unmixy things. The few times I've tried to do magic, it's gone all wonky. Willow, yeah, she can do a lot, so can Tara but me? I'm the normal one in the group, the Zeppo. You have to have the wrong person."
"We have the correct person. The reason magic does not work for you is because your magic was bound when you were a baby," Severus stated. He had no idea what a Zeppo was. but he was able to understand that the boy had friends who did magic. He'd scanned him enough to make sure that his magic was bound and not some other reason for it not manifesting such as the boy being a squib. He'd also found a similar natural block on him as Harry still had. It seemed odd that he had found two people with such blocks on their magic. Having never seen or heard of such a block before to find two in such a short time seemed highly unlikely and he had to wonder if it was more than just coincidence at work. "If you allow me to I can unbind it. I should warn though that it can be a bit painful."
"What? Uh.." Xander shook his head as he thought over what the vampire wanna-be said. The thought that he could be a wizard just didn't seem possible and yet looking at the three men across from him he saw that they were very serious. This wasn't some elaborate joke he knew that. It was just a lot to take in. "Let's slow down a bit here," he said needing a minute to think about this. His gut was telling him that they wouldn't have come all this way on a whim and there was the fact that his mother was related to the woman who might have kidnapped the baby. Still did he want to let them just do a magic spell on him without verifying any of it? "Um, nothing personal, but I don't know any of you from Adam, wait, you know I did know an Adam; not that you are like him at all considering he was a demon human hybrid. I really should change that to a name I don't know. Anyway, I don't know you and before I let you do any magic on me I'd like to see if I can get any of this verified."
"And just how may I ask do you plan to have it verified?" Snape asked in his condescending tone that he usually used for students who asked dumb questions.
"Uncle Sev, you cannot blame him. I mean we did just show up here unannounced and spring this on him," Draco pointed out, although he too was wondering how he planned to get it verified.
"I have a friend who should be able to help," Xander said ignoring Severus tone since he was used to worse from Anya. "He owns a shop not too far from here actually if you don't mind going over there." He hoped Giles could help with this. He wasn't sure how, but if anyone could figure out a way to verify the information it would be Giles. Once he knew for sure they weren't lying he would then confront his mother about the situation and find out what she knew. He had so many questions going through his head about the situation. He wanted to get them to answer them, but he figured he'd wait until he was sure that they were telling the truth. He just had to put his faith in Giles and that he'd know of a way to verify what they had told him. He just wasn't looking forward to going to the Magic Box since Anya would be there, still what choice did he really have since he knew he had to find out if this was all true?
"Of course," Harry said moving to stand up figuring they were going right then. "I know this must be difficult, therefore we will try to help in any way that we can." Like the others, he wasn't sure how Alexander was going to try to verify what they had told him, but he was willing to follow his lead on it. After all, he now wished he had verified things that Dumbledore and others had told him over the last few years. He could not begrudge others wanting to do the same thing.
"Let me just get my shoes on," Xander stated. He went into the bedroom coming back out to sit down to put the socks and shoes on. "By the way what was my name?" He still had to wonder if they had the wrong guy, yet from all that they had said the pieces did seem to fit. He doubted they would come all this way otherwise, still he didn't want to get his hopes up on the fact that he was a wizard and that he wasn't related to Tony Harris. He figured anyone had to be better than Tony Harris for a father. He freely admitted he hated the man and all the man had done to him while he was growing up.
"It was Arcturus Alphard Black," Harry told him wondering what he would think of it.
"Man that name sucks. I think I'll stick with Xander," Xander said as he finished and stood up. "Of course Sirius isn't that much better or Bellatrix for that matter. You Brits sure have some weird names."
Harry couldn't help but laugh at that especially given Severus and Draco's face at the comment. "He has a point Draco, Severus," he said to them only to get a glare in return. "I think it's the wizarding community more so than us Brits as you call us."
"Ok you are going to have to fill me in on this wizarding community while we walk over there," Xander stated. He grabbed his keys and led the way out for the walk over. This sounded different from just a local group or coven. They'd mentioned a department of mysteries, which sounded government like. Had his father worked for the government? Had he been a spy like James Bond?
"Of course" Harry said as they walked beside him. He was glad he'd insisted on everyone wearing close to muggle attire, even if Severus had complained about it. They didn't stick out as bad as they could have while walking down the street towards Alexander's friend's place. They took turns filling the man in on the wizarding community in England. They explained how the ministry worked and about some of the laws that prevailed. He had the feeling, though, that Xander, as he told them to call him, would have many, many questions about it all.
Xander's head was spinning with all the information they had given him. It was a lot to take in all at once. He'd asked only one question however, why hadn't Willow or Tara been offered such an education since it turned out there was a similar ministry here in the states? He then learned that Wicca and wand magic were very different. While some could do both, which was very rare, Wicca called on magic from outside the body while Wand users called on a core of magic within the body. Xander wondered what Willow would think upon learning about this and the fact that there were other types of magic out there. Entering the Magic Box Xander saw Anya and almost groaned knowing he wouldn't be able to avoid her. He could see the argument that was headed his way almost like a train wreck about to happen.
Anya spotted Xander and rushed over to him ignoring those with him. "Xander! I was going to come home during lunch so that we could give each other many, many orgasms. Then you'd see I'm right and stop this foolish need to go out patrolling with Spike every night. Since you are here, though, we could use the training room. We had a lot of fun in there the last time we did so. Remember how I bent over..."
"Anya! Enough," Xander said blushing bright red. He saw the three men looking at him and knew they had to be wondering what was with Anya. That was another thing he was tired of; the way she constantly embarrassed him. Obviously the two of them were not meant for each other. She needed someone that he would never be and he realized he didn't like who he became around her. He kept trying to change her or he was always correcting her. The more he thought of it the more it reminded him of how Tony Harris acted and he didn't like it so even if she retracted the ultimatum he knew he had to walk away from her. "I didn't come here to see you. I told you this morning what I decided. Now, please let me by," he said gently trying not to be nasty, but he really didn't want to deal with this again, especially not in front of everyone else. He looked at the others, "Giles should be in back." He moved around the stunned Anya and led the way towards the back room.
"Xander Harris! You walk away now and we are finished. I mean it," Anya screeched. She really didn't think Xander would throw away everything they had just so he could patrol; after all they were great in bed together. What else does a couple need to have?
"Fine," Xander snapped without looking back at her as he continued walking away. He took a deep breath and let it out slowly to let out his tension. "Sorry about that," he told the group with him. "Anya hasn't realized that some conversations should be done in private."
"Hardly your fault that the girl has no sense of propriety," Snape stated. "I think you handled the situation with decorum. I give you credit in that for I doubt it was easy to have her say such things in front of people you hardly know." So far from what he'd seen of the young man Xander appeared to be far more mature then his father ever hoped to have been.
Giles had his head bent as he was reading over the text in his recent purchase. The book would have cost him a fortune if the owner hadn't owed him several times over. He'd had to cancel the debt and still give the owner two thousand dollars; however, he knew it was worth a hundred times that amount. Hearing the footsteps, he barely glanced over recognizing Xander's jeans and shoes. "Xander I was not expecting you here today. Is something wr.." He broke off as he looked up and saw the three men with the youth. As he looked at the men his eyes spotted the tell tale scar. "Good lord...Harry Potter," he said with some shock in his voice. This was hardly the place he would ever expect to see the-boy-who-lived.
Xander looked from Giles to Harry a bit confused by this development. "You two know each other?" he asked.
"No, but I think he knows of me," Harry explained. It seemed even here in America he couldn't get away from the boy-who-lived persona. "It's a complicated story, but I will fill you in later if you want."
"Ripper Giles," Snape said with a smirk on his face as he recognized the man standing there. "I have not seen you since graduation. No one seemed to have heard of you after you left Hogwarts. It was rumored you left the wizarding world to attend a muggle university."
"My word...Severus Snape," Giles stated as he looked at the man in question noticing the changes since he'd last seen him. He wasn't sure why he suddenly had wizards from England in there least of all why they were with Xander, but he was hoping there was an explanation to be had. "Xander do you want to explain what is going on?"
"Yeah, sure okay, first the other guy here who looks like Spike is Draco Malfoy. The three of them showed up at my house claiming I am the son of some wizard named Sirius Black; that I was kidnapped as a baby and that my magic was bound," Xander said all in one breath. It wasn't quite a babble like Willow did, but it came a close second.
"I see," Giles said as he took off his glasses and began to clean them. "Please everyone take a seat. Now you three claim that Xander is Sirius Black's son? As in the mass murderer?"
"What? My father was a mass murder?" Xander said looking at the three men as they took the offered seats. Xander decided to stay standing as he heard this latest news wondering what else he hadn't been told.
"He was cleared of all charges when the true culprit was caught. Unfortunately, it wasn't until after he died," Harry explained. He hadn't thought talking about this would be so difficult, although he should have. He was still a bit raw when it came to Sirius and he still felt guilty over his death. If he just hadn't of fallen for that trap then Sirius would still be alive.
"Xander wanted to verify our information," Draco explained speaking for the first time since entering the room. "That's why we came over here. I take it you are a wizard as well. Why are you here among muggles?"
"A simple paternity spell should reveal everything," Giles stated. He saw the curiosity shining in Snape's eyes, as well as the others, so figured he should answer. He set his book aside to go over to the one cupboard to take out his wand; something he only used on rare occasions anymore. "After Hogwarts I ended up going into the family business. My father's family has been a part of the Watcher's council for several generations and it was expected of me to do so as well." He of course didn't mention how he'd rebelled against it or how he'd dabbled in the dark arts before finally bowing to his father's demands. "I came to Sunnydale several years ago to be a Watcher to the current slayer," sadness tinged his words as he thought of Buffy and the sacrifice she had made for all of them.
Snape scowled as he heard what Giles was currently doing. The Ministry did not interact with the Watcher Council since they saw all demons as evil and killed vampires indiscriminately. "How could you go to work for them, Ripper? They are murders," he sneered at his former friend. He had never thought Ripper to be a bigot as those who saw non-humans as beings to be disposed of.
"Wait, what exactly is a slayer; let alone this council you are talking about?" Harry asked. He had the feeling he was missing something here and that it was important.
"The slayer is a young woman who is given abilities that allow her to fight demons and vampires," Snape explained. "These abilities include strength, flexibility, healing, agility and of course fighting skills. The problem is in the fact that they kill all without question. It is how The Council trains them. The fact that not all demons are evil and not all vampires are soulless does not matter to The Council and it never has. They take these girls when they are very young, isolate them away from their families, and then indoctrinate them with their propaganda until they are nothing but killing machines. They kill indiscriminately and The Council cheers them on."
"What do you mean all vampires are not soulless?" Xander asked as he glanced from Giles to Snape. Giles seemed to be as confused by the comment as he was. He knew this wasn't why they had come there but now he wanted to know. He'd been told that all vampires except Angel had no soul; that they were monsters to be destroyed.
Snape sighed in frustration feeling as if he were dealing with some of his students. He had studied vampires far more than what had ever been discussed in their DADA classes. He had found them fascinating and wanted to learn as much as he could about them. He was actually considered an expert on the subject by the Ministry. "Each vampire is part of an order that is headed by a master vampire. When the master vampire takes over the order they have to do a ritual, during which if they decide to they are able to have not only their souls returned, but also all those in their line. It may not seem fair, but the others in the line have no say in the matter. Now, if a souled vampire sires another that vampire continues to have their soul, however a soulless vampire creates soulless vampires as well. To my knowledge currently, there are only two orders that do not have their souls. Most vampires out there have souls and are able to choose between good and evil the same as humans. It is for this reason the Ministry of Magic has no dealings with the Council. Now once a vampire has his soul unless they give it up of their own free will it cannot be taken from them again even if another master is called and they do not want their soul."
Giles sat with a thud. He'd never heard this information before. In his DADA classes they had just gone over the ways to defend oneself if attacked by a vampire and how to kill one if need be. There had been no discussion about souls or orders. Everything else he'd learned about vampires had come from the Council or his father, which he might as well say just the council since his father had been a council man through and through.. "Severus are you sure on this? That is not what I was taught all my life."
"Of course I am sure. I have studied vampires since I was twelve," Severus told him with a slight sneer. "I would not trust the Council to tell the truth about anything. They give out the propaganda that they have been around since the dawn of history and the slayer line. They were actually started about seven hundred years ago by a wizard who wanted to become a vampire but was rejected by the one he asked even though he'd been feeding the vampire for months. He started the place out of revenge. Since he could not become a vampire, he decided to wipe them from the face of the planet. He created a spell to find the potential slayer after the current one. He kidnapped her and then arranged to have the current slayer killed thus starting the whole watcher training cycle."
"No, I've seen the records....they show how the council is thousands of years old," Giles said his voice fading as he talked. He knew such records could be faked. It wouldn't be that difficult. As everything that Severus said registered, he felt sick to his stomach. Good Lord, how many innocents had been killed due to one man's revenge? "Excuse me gentleman," He said before getting up and heading for the bathroom.
Xander sat down and dropped his head against the table. He felt his whole world had been turned upside down. First, he learns he had been kidnapped as a child and now he learns that he'd been lied to all these years about vampires. He knew some demons were good, they had learned that, but they'd all thought vampires were monsters with no souls and only sought to kill. "Great Zeus, what have we done?" he muttered to himself not expecting any answers.
"As interesting as all this is should we not get back to why we are here?" Draco asked of the group. He'd had many talks in the past with Severus about vampires so had known this information so could not really understand why Giles and Xander were reacting this way. He assumed that they only went after vampires that attacked and didn't know that they also went after ones that had just risen without giving them a chance before attacking.
"Yes of course," Giles said as he came out of the bathroom. He knew the young man was right. This discussion could wait until Xander knew they were telling the truth about his parents. He would talk with Severus and learn what more he knew about the Council and vampires. He had the feeling that everything in their lives was about to change. He waved his wand at Xander and stated "Ostendo sum Parentes." Within seconds in front of Xander appeared two names; Sirius Orion Black and Mary Ellen MacDonald.
