Chapter 10
Scrubbing both hands through his hair, Remus looked around at the mass of parchments on the table and growled softly. He just couldn't concentrate, all there was to it. His bestial side, the part everyone had that they kept under control, was trying to show itself by now because of the looming nightfall. It was several hours away still, but, because of him being a werewolf, that pull was there. Most times, he could keep it in check, even on the days leading up to the full moon, but on the day of, he had issues. That was probably more pronounced this month because of Sirius and Harry's return, probably more to do with Harry than anything else. As Sirius was the alpha in this 'pack', he would bow to him to an extent. Harry—he was 'his', someone to protect and watch over. Not to mention the other part of the relationship. That didn't help his flagging self control in the least.
Putting his head in his hands, he tried to focus. He didn't think that would happen, honestly, but he wanted to try. What he wanted to do was follow part of the siren song and go find Harry, but he didn't. No, that he wouldn't do. Harry was very accustomed to neither he nor Sirius being gentle about anything they did. This though—no! He was animalistic during this time anyway, something Harry knew, but with them returning and the bond trying to reconnect, he wasn't going to chance even trying. It was too great a risk for Harry, and him getting hurt, because of what he might do. It—he just had to keep it under control, that's all there was to it.
Sighing softly, he lifted his head then rested his chin in his palms, hands covering his mouth and looked at the mess on the table. Shaking his head, he decided that continuing on was a futile effort. He couldn't focus enough to really take note of what they did have to know. As nothing here was pressing, it would be fine to let it go for a couple of days to give himself some time to not only deal with this, but recover. That's what he should do. If he went about it that way, all he would have to deal with was emergent issues that came via owl. Those he was certain he could handle, no matter how tired he was from this. With the Wolfsbane and the two being back, it might be easier than it usually was, something he hoped.
Looking at the parchments on the table, he jumped when a soft voice from the doorway said his name. Head swiveling in that direction, he saw Sirius standing there. Sighing, he said, “You startled me.”
“I figured,” Sirius grinned. Leaning against the jamb, arms crossed over his chest, Sirius told him softly, “Don't worry about it. Whatever is there can wait, Remus. It isn't going anywhere. Just knock off for the day.” Quietly he added, knowing what part of the problem was, “Come on. Harry and I decided to go smack some balls around in the yard. You can join us. It'll help with some of it. Just try to relax. As the three of us will be together, it should help.”
Smiling a little and nodding, Remus liked that idea. It would take some of the aggressions out in a way that wasn't harmful to anyone and soothe him, as it was something they could all do together. “I think that sounds like fun.”
“It is,” Sirius grinned. “Besides, we have yet to get even with Harry for that last trouncing he gave us. This is our chance. So, we have to make a good showing, Moony!”
Chuckling at that and standing, Remus nodded, “We do. I just have a feeling that we're going to get another sound thrashing.”
“Probably,” Sirius laughed, clapping him on the shoulder as he guided him out to the backyard where Harry was already waiting. “I said showing, not perform a miracle! That we can manage.” Lowering his voice, he said, “Its fine. We all have our problems dealing with this. Yours is just showing now. Nothing to worry about and nothing we can't handle in odd ways. Keep that in mind.”
“True,” Remus smiled, allowing himself to be guided. “It's just hard at times. Now is one of them.”
“We get it. Just like you do with us. Nothing to worry about, Remus. We'll find something to do to keep you occupied until the time comes. And you won't have to worry about getting too rough with areas. Keep that in mind.”
Nodding to let Sirius know he heard, Remus was happy with this. He had been worried as he wasn't sure the reaction to some areas because of the separation and the pull of the bond, so this made him feel better.
“Now we need to come up with some kind of strategy so we don't end up feeling like first years taking their initial broom ride! I should have realized that Harry was damned good when I gave him that first broom. This—bloody hell, our egos need help here, Remus, so we need to come up with something!”
Snorting, Remus told him, “There's nothing, Sirius. We just try for at least scoring a couple of times so he doesn't completely annihilate us. Each time we play, we can get a better feel for what might help. I'm not counting on that, though. He's too good to do much else with.”
“Which means we might have to resort to sneaky and underhanded,” Sirius sighed, shaking his head. “Yeah, even then I don't see us doing too well. He's used to that from school with the other teams. We can't even compete with some of what Slytherin tried with him. Oh well, it keeps the ego in check on other areas! That's good.”
Lying on the bed in what used to be Sirius' mother's room, Remus, in his wolf form, had his eyes shut and was panting heavily. He was still in pain from the transformation and waiting for that to die down before shifting around too much to get into a more comfortable position. It would only take a few minutes before he could manage that as he had gone through this for so many years and knew such things. Still, every month, even though he prepared for the pain, it was hard to take. All he kept reminding himself was that he would feel better soon, something he did every month as well to deal with it.
When the pain finally ebbed enough that moving didn't make him whimper, he stretched out, facing the windows, back to the door. Gazing out at the night sky, he sighed softly, tip of his tail thumping on the bed. Now he just had to wait until daylight to transform back. As was normal for this monthly ritual, he planned to sleep through most of it. It was just—this time was harder than he could remember it being for years now. At school it had been bad, before his friends could join him, though he didn't remember much of that. It was just the idea of being alone at this time that bothered him. Now? Well, it was the same.
For the first time in a year he had Harry and Sirius back and he now had to stay away from them. Sirius—the issue wasn't with his end. Padfoot and Moony were old friends and the bear-like dog wasn't at risk of harm from him. It was Harry that was the issue. Though he now kept his mind during the transformation, thanks to the potion, he didn't want to risk harming Harry in any way, even if it was unintentional. He would never forgive himself if he sentenced Harry to this life. No, he needed to stay away. That though—it was now hard. The longing to be with the two of them because of the bond was a strong pull that was like torture ignoring. He would ignore it though and do what he did every month.
Letting out a very dog-like blurry sigh, he shut his eyes. It was time to rest. After all, he would be tired for the next couple of days because of this, so he needed to rest to help with that. Shifting around, he got as comfortable as he could in a body he still wasn't used to, even after all these years, and tried to relax.
Just as he was sliding from a doze to a real sleep, Remus came to with a start. Ears twitching, he lifted his head as he heard the doorknob on the room turn. Head turning in that direction, nose starting to twitch, tail thumping on the bed, he waited to see what was going on. He didn't expect danger, of course, and smelled nothing but Harry and Sirius, as he would expect since the room still carried their scents from the day before, but he was curious about what was going on.
When the door opened, Remus turned over, though stayed sprawled out on the bed, head up. Watching Padfoot come in, he felt a bit better and that longing seemed to abate slightly. Tail thumping harder, he waited. Something was off though. Padfoot kept looking down at the floor as he made his way towards the bed. When the massive dog reached it, he didn't jump up on it as expected. Instead, he shoved a small hassock over by it with his head. Giving a soft bark, he kept looking down. After a couple of moments, his old friend then jumped up on the bed by him. Sitting up, Padfoot seemed to be watching something on the floor, his own tail beating a rapid tattoo on the mattress.
Not moving, Remus wondered what was up. He didn't assume Sirius would leave Harry alone all night to be with him because the bond probably wouldn't like that and cause him some issues. However, this whole thing was bizarre. Then there was the fact that Harry's smell seemed sharper than it had been, like Harry himself was closer. Harry hadn't come in, though, thankfully. Looking at Padfoot, he waited to see what was going on. It was then he was startled by a very puppy-like bark as a small black dog with green eyes, one that looked like a husky puppy, bounded onto the bed, tail wagging madly. Letting out a canine-like whine, Remus lifted his head further. Nose twitching, he couldn't detect any kind of new smell. All he picked up on was Sirius and Harry. It was then that it hit him. Tail thumping harder on the bed, he looked at Sirius.
Leaning down, Padfoot nudged the 'puppy' towards Remus, hoping to impart what he should do. Seeing Little Paws, as he had dubbed him while on the other side of the Veil, drop onto his belly and inch towards Moony, he waited, eying his old friend, tail wagging.
Watching the small dog come in his direction, Remus waited until the puppy was close then flopped on his back, tail wagging, tongue lolled out the side of his mouth, to lower his head and give a good sniff. Hearing the puppy-like bark and feeling the small paws bat playfully at his nose, he got it. This was Harry. He had done the same thing his friends had done in school so long ago; become an Animagus so he wasn't alone during the full moon. Giving the dog's head a lick, tail thumping harder on the bed, he then nuzzled him, Harry's unique scent filling his nose as he did. This was good. Now the three of them could be together and he didn't have to worry about harming Harry or inadvertently infecting him. Tailing wagging faster, he nuzzled Harry again, tongue lolling out the side of his mouth.
Batting at Remus' nose again, Little Paws then stood. Shaking, he then crouched down, bottom in the air, before hopping forward a little and tackling Moony's tail, growling playfully as he did. After a couple of moments of batting it around, he then did the same with Padfoot's. Once he was done, he seated himself in front of Padfoot, curled tail still wagging, tongue lolled out the side of his mouth. Looking up at Padfoot, who almost seemed to loom over him because of the huge size difference, he gave a happy bark then looked at Moony and did the same thing. This was good and perfect. At the time when the bond was pulling hardest at all of them, they could be together, despite the full moon. And it felt wonderful.
Leaning down, Padfoot nuzzled Little Paws then leaned over and did the same with Moony before flopping down. Reaching out, he batted at Little Paw's playfully, giving an amused snort at the puppy-like growl from Harry then his paw being tackled and played with. This was good.
Moving over to be closer to the two, Moony nuzzled Little Paws again then batted at him himself, snorting as the puppy-like dog tackled his paw with a 'fierce' growl, wrestling with it. Curling around Harry as he played, he licked his head, tail thumping happily on the bed as he did.
After about an hour, when Sirius knew Remus wasn't in as much pain, he gave Harry a nudge, barking as he did. It was time. They had already worked this out and everything was in place, so it was time to do it. Watching Harry bound off the bed and onto the floor, making sure he didn't hurt himself because of his size, he then stood before nudging Moony to get moving in the same direction. This would be great and something they hadn't done since school. Moony would love it too. Especially since he had made damned sure that every precaution he could was put in place.
Though confused by what was going on, Remus went with what Sirius wanted, hopping off the bed and walking over to Harry, who seemed to be waiting for him, tail wagging faster. Once there, he saw Sirius bringing up the end. After another nudge, Remus followed Harry out of the room and the puppy bounded off towards the stairs, barking happily. Wondering what was going on, he trailed along down the stairs after the puppy. However, he was apprehensive when they got to the bottom floor and the back door was open. Harry dashed out of it, but he was reluctant to follow. The backyard wasn't huge, of course, but he wasn't sure about going outside. Another nudge from Sirius got him moving, though.
Once outside, Remus got it. He could smell the new wards, what with his canine sense of smell, and feel the magic of them. Sirius had put up precautions against everything. This would work even if he didn't have the Wolfsbane. So, it was safe to come out and do whatever. Head swiveling to his old friend, who was seated on the small patio, he then watched as the puppy that was Harry dash around, barking happily, before finding something to play with. Lifting his head, he gave a deep sniff, feeling content. Because of the wards around the house, he didn't smell so much that others in London did, just good clean air. That was wonderful. Tail wagging, he took off after the puppy that was Harry. It felt wonderful to stretch his legs in this form again. Within minutes, Sirius had joined them, romping around and playing. Just perfect.
After a while of just romping around, something that felt good though wore him out, Remus was sitting there watching Harry and Sirius wrestle around a bit. Taking a deep drink from the bowl of fresh water that was there, he watched as Harry then came over and did the same. When the puppy-like dog came and sat in front of him, gazing up into his eyes, his tail started wagging again. This was wonderful. Then he gave an amused dog-like snort as Harry lifted his head and tried to howl. He couldn't quite manage it and had what could only be described as a disgruntled look on his face when he finished. Tail wagging harder, Remus lifted his head and let out a long wolf howl. When he finished, he looked down at Harry then nudged him to try again. After all, such things took plenty of practice. Seeing Harry try again, and still failing, though sounding better, looking disgruntled yet again, he leaned down and licked his head. Lifting his head, he howled again, relishing in how good it felt to do this once more. Padfoot had come over to join them at this point, so when he was done, the massive bear-like dog did the same thing. Though it wasn't a wolf howl, it was quite good. That Remus liked. Once more, he lifted his head and howled. This time he was joined by Sirius and Harry attempting it. Oh, that was wonderful!
Just before dawn the three finally headed back in, all tired, but in a good mood from the romp in the backyard. Curling back up on the bed with Harry and Sirius with him, Remus shut his eyes and waited for the first rays of dawn that would herald the change back. He feared that of course, like he did every month, because of the pain it brought, but this time he wouldn't have to endure it alone. The two he was bonded with were with him. That was comforting in a way he couldn't describe.
As the first rays of the sun began to shine through the window, Remus changed back, panting heavily when it finished, shivering in pain. Eyes shut, body slick with sweat, he took in deep gulps of air and concentrated on breathing to get through this as he always did. He was distracted by Sirius' voice. Glancing in that direction, still shaking, he saw his old friend, who had transformed back and was holding the now human again Harry with one arm, offering him a vial of what he assumed was a pain killing draught. Taking it with a shaky hand, he then downed it, feeling better almost instantly.
Scooting the two of them over, making sure that Harry was sandwiched between them, Sirius draped his arm over the still slightly shivering Remus. Curling up close to Harry so he could stay as close to Remus as he could, he said, “Like I said before; we're in this together, Remus. That includes the full moon. There's no reason you have to shut yourself away. We had it all worked out.”
Turning on his side, arm draped over the two, Remus smiled, eyes drifting down to Harry. “That was a wonderful surprise.”
“You don't think we just played around on the other side, did you?” Sirius grinned, looking at him. “We knew how bad this could get if we stayed apart for even one night when we came back, so we worked on this. It wasn't as hard as what we went through in school to manage because I knew what to do and could help Harry.”
“Wasn't exactly easy, but I managed. I just wish I had something a little more impressive and intimidating than a perpetual puppy. We won't even talk about how there is no chance of anything I do sounding or looking fierce while in that form,” Harry chuckled, holding onto Remus and pressing back against Sirius.
“Nope, fierce and intimidating isn't happening with that, Harry,” Sirius laughed. Lowering his voice, he added, “It's not surprising that's what it is, though, because of what shows on the bond mark. You're our puppy-like dog.”
“True,” Harry sighed, shutting his eyes. “You two are giving me howling lessons next month! That I want to manage.”
“We'll let Moony handle that. He's the master at it,” Sirius told him, his own eyes sliding shut after a bone-cracking yawn.
“I can do that,” Remus told him with a smile, stroking Harry's head. “Easily. You might not sound intimidating while doing it, but you'll manage.” Looking between the two, he said, softly, “Thank you.”
“Nothing to thank us for,” Harry sighed. “We're in this together, so that means all the time.”
Inclining his head, Remus kissed Harry then leaned over and did the same with Sirius. With a contented and tired sigh, he then flopped back and shut his eyes. This was good, that's for sure, and he felt better than he ever had after the transformation. Oh, he was tired like he always was, but this was a different kind. It was the kind that you felt after doing something fun that wore you out, not because of a biological cause. He was sure that the biological part was there, but it was buried under the other part. Instead of dreading the next couple of days and the lethargy that came with them, he felt better. Oh, he was sure the tired would be there like it was every month, but he thought that if Harry could manage to pull off what he did and make this time of the month easier that the rest wouldn't be bad either. He would deal with it because he wasn't alone to do that anymore. Instead, he had two people that would be with him through the whole thing. Somehow, that made it easier to handle.
